The TeamHead coach Steve Fiske enters his 14th season at the helm of the Boston College women’s rowing team looking to embark on an-other successful year

Fiske will turn to his senior tri-captains – Erica Jennings, Jenni-fer Johnson, and Sarah Loiselle – as the team’s leaders The trio will provide veteran poise on a team that features seven seniors, 12 juniors, 20 sophomores, and 23 freshmen With 16 states, four different time zones, and the District of Columbia represented on the roster, the Eagles maintain a rich and diverse talent pool

Assistant coach Amy Weatherby returns for her fourth season at the Heights – with the team’s novice boats under her guidance – and fellow assistant coach Caitlin Mance begins her first season working with the rowing program

The Eagles enter the spring coming off another productive fall season and have their sights set on another competitive spring campaign

The ScheduleBoston College opens its 2013 spring schedule with the Jesuit Invitational on March 16 on the Cooper River in Camden, N J Last season, BC won the team championship title at the event

The Eagles will compete twice more in the month of March – at the Beanpot on March 23 and at the URI Resolute Cup on March 30 Last spring, BC rowed in both regattas winning two events at the Resolute Cup on the Narrow River in Kingston, R I The

Beanpot will mark the first time that the Eagles take to their home course, the Charles River, in 2013

BC opens the month of April with a regatta against MIT and Wellesley on the Charles on April 6 having won two events against the Engineers in the same event in 2012 The Eagles fol-low that race with the Knecht Cup on April 13-14 on the Cooper River and the Irving-Christensen Cup against Holy Cross and Connecticut on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass , on April 21 Last spring, the Eagles won the Irving-Christensen Cup, and BC’s varsity eight earned ACC Crew of the Week acco-lades for the effort

In the month of May, the Eagles will compete in the EAWRC Sprints on the Cooper River on May 5 and in the ACC Champi-onships on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S C , on May 12 If the team is selected, the Eagles will take part in the NCAA Champi-onships at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind , from May 31 to June 2

Fall 2012BC comes into its spring season on the heels of another strong fall racing campaign

Competing at the 48th Head of the Charles Regatta on Oct 20-21, the Eagles earned a fifth-place finish in the club eight event and a sixth-place finish in the club four race For the first time, a boat of BC alumnae raced in the alumnae eight event at the world-famous regatta

The next weekend, on Oct 28, at the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie senior tri-captain Jennifer Johnson clocked in as the fastest women’s single in the small boats event in her second race of the day

At the all-novice Green Monster Regatta on Nov 3, the Eagles won the event for the second year in a row with BC’s boats finish-ing in a combined time of 34:35 The regatta – on the Connecticut River in Hanover, N H – marked the first competitive race for BC’s novice rowers since joining the program in September

The Eagles concluded their fall season with the Foot of the Charles on Nov 10 BC’s A boat in the novice eight took second place to lead the way for Boston College

Steve Fiske Head Coach 14th Season

Head Coach Steve Fiske enters his 14th season in 2012-13 as head coach and program director of rowing at Boston College Fiske came to the heights in 1999, prior to the program’s final year as a club sport at BC Fiske enjoyed immediate success in the Eagles’ inaugural season, winning a Dad Vail Championship, including a victory in the women’s Varsity Eight, and consequently earning selection as Division I New England Coach of the year in 2001

During his tenure at the helm, Fiske’s teams have shown consistent speed and progress, highlighted by wins in a number of prestigious regattas, including the Dad Vail Championship, the Big East Championship, the New England Rowing Championship, and the Knecht Cup

In 2005, BC’s final year in the Big East Conference, Fiske earned Big East Coach of the Year honors after guiding the rowing team to a second-place finish at the conference championship, the best finish in program history Upon joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2006, the Eagles proceeded to place fifth in each of their first two years BC finished the 2008 season sixth in the conference and improved to a fourth place finish in 2009

Fiske has continued to move the program forward by placing the Eagles next to the best possible competition In June 2004, Fiske took the Eagles to Europe to compete in the prestigious Henley Women’s Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta, where they represented Boston College for the first time in the program’s history

From 2004-2006, Fiske’s teams were twice invited as an “honorary guest” to compete in the Eastern Association of Women’s Rowing Colleges (EAWRC) Championship, based on the strength of their schedule and the speed of their Varsity Eight In 2007, the Eastern Sprints named Boston College a permanent member of the league, ensuring the future for the Eagles to race against the best teams in the Northeast and the country

Prior to coaching at Boston College, Fiske served as an assistant coach for six years at his alma mater, Fordham University His teams at Fordham won medals in a number of championship regattas, including the Atlantic 10 Championships, the Dad Vail Regatta and the International Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta

Fiske competed intercollegiately at Fordham and was a member of some of the university’s most successful crews He rowed with the 1992 Fordham four that won a bronze medal in the IRA Regatta and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Henley Royal Regatta During his senior year, he advanced to the Collegiate Finals of the World Indoor

Rowing Championships (CRASH-B Sprints), where he finished fifth Immediately following his senior year, Fiske was invited to the United States National Team pre-elite camp in Philadelphia

Fiske continued to race competitively for the New York Athletic Club from 1993-2000, winning five national titles for the club in both sweep and sculling events He also raced internationally, representing the Commercial Rowing Club of Ireland at races in both continental Europe and Great Britain

Fiske earned a Bachelor of Arts in art history and pre-architecture from Fordham and recently completed a master’s degree in administrative studies from Boston College Steve and his wife, Christine, reside in Milton with their daughters Isabella and Lindsey

Caitlin ManceAssistant CoachFirst Season

Caitlin Mance enters her first season as an assistant coach with the women’s rowing program in 2012-13

Mance is also currently a fellow at the Institute for Rowing Leadership at Community Rowing Inc in Brighton, Mass At CRI Mance organizes and administers multiple practices per week for over 50 rowers of various skill levels

Prior to joining the Eagles, the Cornell grad spent the past two years as the Development Coordinator for Save the Harbor/Save the Bay While at Save the Harbor/Save the Bay she assisted in implementing an organization-wide fundraising program that incorporated foundation fundraising, corporate sponsorship, and other pledges

Mance moved to Boston in 2009 to complete her master’s degree in Energy and Environmental Analysis at Boston University while continuing to row at the Riverside Boat Club

After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Biology in 2008 from Cornell, she started her coaching career as an intern coach with the women’s varsity rowing program working primarily with the third varsity four While in Ithaca, Mance helped develop players such as Erica Crump who received All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team honors in 2009 and provided one-on-one skill instruction for thirty student-athletes

A native of South Easton, Mass , Mance rowed for four years at Cornell, captaining the Big Red as a senior After her senior season, she earned the 2008 Cornell Rowing Bill Doherty Award for selfless contributions to the team

Amy WeatherbyAssistant CoachFourth Season

Amy Weatherby enters her fourth season in 2012-13 as an assistant rowing coach at Boston College

In the fall of 2010, Weatherby led the freshmen to their highest finish ever in the Novice 8+ race in the Foot of the Charles The Eagles `A’ boat finished in 4th place, while the `B’ boat finished 8th, marking the highest finish of all `B’ boats BC’s `C’ boat finished 14th, also the highest of all the other boats in its category The freshmen also represented Boston College well in the Club 4+ event at Head of the Charles, where they finished 11th out of 52 entries

Wetherby joins the Eagles from National Cathedral High School, where she served as head coach of the rowing team During her tenure, she also designed a training program for varsity and novice athletes in the winter through spring seasons

At National Cathedral, Weatherby specifically emphasized the development of mental toughness and mental training She coached the rowing team to Gold at the Virginia State Scholastic Championship in the 1V and silver in the 2V event In addition, Weatherby won multiple dual and tri meets in her tenure at National Cathedral

In the summer of 2009, Weatherby served as the U S Rowing Senior/U23/Lightweight Development Camp Assistant Coach at the Thompson Boat Center on the Potomac River in Washington, D C She worked with high level collegiate and post-collegiate athletes in order to train them for competition at the U S Rowing Nationals and Canadian Henley in the 2- 4+, 4-, and 8+

In 2008, Weatherby was head coach of the Thompson Boat Center Junior Women and designed a comprehensive training program for more than 40 athletes Her team’s notable accomplishments include earning Silver in the Women’s Junior A 8+, Bronze in the Women’s Junior A 4+, silver in the Women’s Junior B 8+, Gold and Bronze in the Women’s Junior B 4+ at USRowing Club Nationals, and a 17th place finish in the Youth 8+ at the prestigious Head of the Charles

While at the Thompson Boat Center, she also served as Assistant Program Director in 2008 From the fall of 2004 to the spring of 2007, Weatherby coached the Walt Whitman High School freshman girls rowing team

She graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 2004 with a B S in Psychology At Wisconsin, she was a four-year member of the rowing team Weatherby stroked the Freshman 8 crew that won the Big Ten Championship in 2000 She also won the Silver at Eastern Sprints in the Varsity Four in 2001

Jody Mooradian has been a member of the athletics department staff at Boston College since 2003 In her position, she administers the sports of women’s basketball, field hockey, volleyball, cross country, track and field, lacrosse, softball, and rowing Mooradian oversees the areas of Student Athlete Development, Sports Medicine and Strength and Conditioning as well as supervising other internal functions of the Department and working with various groups on campus

She serves on the ACC Women’s Basketball Committee, and is Chair of the ACC Field Hockey and Volleyball Committees She is a former chair of the NCAA Women’s Rowing Committee and has served on the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Committee She also served on the NACDA Board and is currently on the Learfield Directors Cup Committee for NACDA She is a member of the Board of the Collegiate Women Sports Foundation where she Chairs the Honda Inspiration Award Jody serves as an Adjunct Professor at Drexel University teaching online Sports Law and Collective Bargaining courses

Prior to her current post at BC, Mooradian served as part of the Northeastern University athletics department for six years During her tenure at Northeastern, Mooradian served as Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance, Associate Director of Athletics, Interim Director of Athletics and Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator Mooradian also served as the Director of Athletics at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania from 1993 until 1997 and was a Compliance Assistant at UCLA in early 1993

Prior to her career in athletics, Mooradian was an attorney for a private law firm and for the Cigna Insurance Company from 1987 until 1993 In addition, she was a District 4 New Hampshire State Representative from 1980-82

Mooradian earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of New Hampshire (’82) and a Juris Doctorate from the Delaware Law School of Widener University (’86)

Boston College Women’s rowing won the Team Champi-onship title at the Jesuit Invitational on March 17 to open the 2012 spring season In addition, the BC women and the BC men combined for the most overall points, bring-ing the Cannonball Trophy to Boston for the first time ever

BC won four out of five events to earn the women’s team title The Eagles won the Varsity Eight for the first time since 2006, posting a time of 7:26 to finish ahead of St Jo-seph’s University and Fairfield The other winning Eagles’ crews were the Second Varsity Eight, the Freshmen Eight and the Freshmen Four The BC Varsity Four boat turned in a strong performance to place third in its event, while the Third Varsity Eight, which competed as a second entry in the Freshmen Eight event, also finish third

Boston College rowing squared off against its Boston rivals on the Charles River at the Beanpot on March 24

The BC Third Varsity Eight turned in the best finish of the day for the Eagles, winning its race by finishing ahead of Northeastern, BU and Radcliffe The 3V8 crew raced well down the whole course, steadily increasing its lead

The Varsity Four was strong in the last 1,000-meters of its race, solidifying a second place finish ahead of North-eastern, BU and MIT The Second Varsity Eight had one of most closely-contested races of the day, fighting with Northeastern and BU the whole way down the course for a fourth place finish

Boston College rowing took five out of six events against Holy Cross and UMass in Worcester, Mass The Eagles were awarded the Irving-Christensen Cup for finishing first in the Varsity Eight event

The Varsity Eight crew was led by senior captains Erin Roche and Emily Charnowski This was BC first time tak-ing home the Irving-Christensen Cup since it was started in 2011

The Second Varsity came away with a victory after facing stiff competition in the first 1,000 meters of the course The Second Varsity four, led by senior Rachel Pettis, won for the second week in a row, leading the whole way down the course

BC’s best result of the day came from the Second Varsity Eight This crew, led by coxswain Lauren Beebe, finished the course in a time of 7:04 4, good for third place behind Virginia and Clemson

The Eagles’ Novice Eight boat earned fourth place with a time of 7:10 7, ahead of North Carolina

Boston College rowing earned two victories against MIT on May 5 in the Eagles last race on the Charles River for the 2012 season

The BC Second Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Eight “A” both defeated MIT Despite starting the race behind, the Second Varsity Eight made a late comeback to move ahead and win by a boat length

The Third Varsity Eight “A” raced against MIT, in addition to BC’s “B” boat The “A” crew, coxed by Kate Votta, took the lead early and extended their advantage throughout the course of the race for the victory

The Varsity Four event was the closest of the day MIT took an early lead over both BC crews The BC “A” Four, coxed by Aran Hubbell, made several strong moves in the second half of the race to close the gap, but ended up finishing just one second behind MIT

The Varsity Eight finished second behind MIT They at-tempted comeback, but they were not able to overcome the deficit

The Second Varsity Four turned in BC’s best finish of the day, winning the bronze medal in the Grand Final, behind Virginia and Northeastern

BC’s Varsity Eight finished third in the Petite Final after using a late sprint to move ahead of Buffalo The Second Varsity Eight registered a strong performance in their heat to advance to the Grand Final This boat then took sixth place in the Final, earning 21 points, which was highest points per boat earned for BC

The Third Varsity Eight finished fifth in the Grand Final ahead of Rhode Island The Varsity Four finished fourth in the Petite Final

Jennifer Johnson clocked in as the fastest women’s single in the small boats event while BC’s entry in the women’s double took fourth place as Boston College rowing com-peted at the Princeton 3-Mile Chase on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, N J

Johnson – racing in her second event of the day – finished the women’s single event in a time of 19:05 866, and BC’s entry in the women’s double finished fourth with a time of 18:24 492

The Boston College A boat in the women’s varsity 4+ came in 15th with a time of 16:59 384 with the Boston Col-lege B boat following closely with a time of 17:00 920 Also in the women’s varsity 4+, BC’s C boat finished 36th with a time of 18:05 692, and BC’s D boat rounded out the Eagles competitors in the event with a 37th-place finish in 18:21 013 The Princeton A boat won the event in a time of 15:58 845

In the women’s varsity 8+, the Boston College A boat paced the Eagles with a 25th-place finish in a time of 14:54 803 BC’s C boat came in 40th with a time of 15:26 183 while BC’s B boat concluded the race in 42nd

with a time of 15:31 147 Virginia’s A entry won the event with a time of 13:41 434

Green Monster RegattaHanover, N.H. – November 3, 2012

The Boston College women’s rowing team took first place for the second year in a row at the all-freshmen/novice Green Monster Regatta on the Connecticut River in Ha-nover, N H

The Eagles won the event with a combined time of 34:35 between its two entries as the regatta selects its winner based on the combined time of a school’s two boats rather than the time of any single boat

In the first event for BC’s freshmen rowers since joining the team in September, the maroon and gold’s “A” entry finished with a time of 17:08 (third overall), and the “B” entry came in with a time of 17:27 (fourth overall)

Race hosts, Dartmouth, came in second with a combined time of 36:39 while Massachusetts (36:45), Vermont (37:17), and MIT (38:35) rounded out the top five

Boston College’s “A” boat took second place in the novice eight to lead the Eagles, as BC rowing concluded its fall racing season with the Foot of the Charles Regatta on the Charles River in Boston, Mass

In BC’s second event of the day, the team’s “A” entry in the novice eight event finished second out of 17 entries with a time of 14:04 2 just behind Radcliffe’s “A” boat which completed the race in a time of 13:41 5 The Eagles’ “B” boat finished with the fastest time out of any “B” boat in the event in a time of 14:36 2, giving the boat a fifth-place finish

In the varsity four – BC’s first race of the day – the “A” entry for the Eagles came in 10th out of 42 entries with a time of 14:31 4, and Boston College’s “B” boat finished 14th with a time of 14:44 0 The “A” boat for Syracuse won the event with a time of 13:50 8 The Eagles’ “D”, “C”, and “E” entries came in 19th (15:01 3), 34th (15:39 9), and 41st (17:43 8) respectively

The final event of the day for the Eagles, the third varsity eight, saw BC’s “A” boat finish fifth out of 13 entries with a time of 14:19 1 while the team’s “B” entry completed the race in ninth place with a time of 14:33 1 – the fastest time of any “B” boat in the event Rhode Island’s “A” entry won the event with a time of 13:57 6

HARRY PARKER BOATHOUSE

On Saturday, Oct 8, 2008, the long wait was

finally over, as the Boston College women’s rowing

team moved into its new home, the Harry Parker

Boathouse

The boathouse, located on Nonantum Road along

the Charles River between Boston and Newton, is

a state-of-the art building featuring 30,000 square

feet of space and a unique architectural design that

brings the outdoors inside

The main common room has space for 60 indoor

rowing machines, and the building features a first-

class weight room and locker rooms Additional

space houses coach and administrative offices as well

as classrooms The building is also environmentally

friendly, with geo-thermal heating units and a

special drainage system to keep runoff from the

boathouse and surrounding parking areas from

draining into the river

Anmahian Winton Architects, the designers of

Boston College’s new facility, earned two awards for

their innovative work Architect Magazine honored

the new structure as a smart and progressive design

with its “P/A Award ” Subsequently, the Chicago

Athenum Museum of Architecture and Design

presented the architects with “The American

Architecture Award for 2008” in praise of the

building’s cutting-edge characteristics
