VOLLEYBALL • SEASON PREVIEW

In recent years, the strength of the Canisius College volleyball team has been up the middle of the court . With the addition of seven newcomers in 2012 to replace four graduated seniors from last year’s team, that hasn’t changed . But the support around those middle hitters appears to have increased and the ability on the back row has improved as well .

The 2012 edition of the Golden Griffins start their schedule this weekend at the UB Invitational . Canisius ended the 2011 season by winning six straight matches (all in three sets), to make a late push for the fourth and final spot in the MAAC Champion-ship . It was the fourth time in the

last six years the Griffs played in the postseason, but they are still in search of their first conference championship .

“Those six wins recommitted us to being process oriented . Even when our backs were against the wall, we took it one match

at a time,” 12th-year head coach Cathy Hummel said . “We have a difficult non-conference schedule . We can’t find ourselves getting caught up in wins and losses and need to stay in the process so we don’t lose sight of where we want to go heading into conference play .”

While it’s easy to see the strength of the team up the mid-dle of the court, the additions have forced Hummel and her staff to change their philosophy and try to match the personnel to the best system possible .

“It hasn’t just been an adjust-ment for the seven newcomers but we all have adjusted because we have changed what we are doing system wise,” Hummel said . “We have increased our ball control and aren’t going to live and die with our hitting and blocking as much as we have in previous years . Our back row defense should be better than it has been, which should give our hitters more opportunities .

“We have challenged all 14 play-ers and three coaches with some new tactics . The personality and work ethic of the squad has been set since day one, and they are pushing in the same direction .”

MIDDLE HITTERS Canisius had two middle hitters rank in the top 10 of the confer-ence in attack percentage last season and add a number of options to complement senior Samantha Good and junior Roxanne Hernandez . Earlier this month, Good became the second player in program history to be named to the preseason All-MAAC Team three times . The Rochester, N .Y . native and 2010 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, Good led the team with a .294 attack percentage in 2011 and ranked fourth in the confer-ence in the category en route to being named to the All-MAAC Second Team . Hernandez ranked ninth in the MAAC with a .258 attack percentage and was sixth

in the conference with a .285 attack percentage in league play . Hernandez averaged 2 .00 kills per set and had a .353 attack percentage in her last 11 appear-ances .

“The strength up the middle is still our identity, but because we have such depth and ability surrounding them, they may see a higher percentage of success in their attacks but not get as many attempts in an actual match,” Hummel said . “I wouldn’t be surprised to see other teams key on them, but I think there should be less pressure should be on the middles to carry the offense because of the support around them .”

Joining that duo will be two freshmen in Amy Osinski and Lauren Siebert . Osinski, who played on the same club team (VolleyFX) as Good, is a 6-foot middle hitter from Pittsford, N .Y . She was a two-time First-Team All-County selection as well as a two-time team captain . Siebert is a 5-foot-10 middle hitter from Orefield, Pa . She was part of a state championship team during her senior season, two district championship teams and three conference championship squads .

OUTSIDE HITTERS Canisius will have to replace the production of outside hitter Danielle Brawn, who posted the best season of her career as a senior in 2011 . Brawn earned All-MAAC Second-Team honors after leading the team and rank-ing fourth in the conference at 3 .53 kills per set .

Canisius has a number of return-ing options in juniors Emily Elek and Jessica Warner along with sophomore Olivia Chrzanowski . Elek appeared in 29 matches last season, totaling double-digit kills 10 times . The junior averaged 2 .53 kills per set and had a .341 attack percentage in the final five matches, including 10 kills and a .421 attack percentage in

the MAAC semifinals against Niagara .

Warner had some impressive performances throughout her sophomore season . The Lan-caster, N .Y . native set a career high with eight blocks against Fairfield, the most blocks by a Golden Griffin in a match in

2011 . Warner had a career-high 12 kills against Kent State and posted a 95 .1 service reception percentage in her last 12 appear-ances . Chrzanowski started 16 of the final 17 matches of her fresh-man season, recording seven kills nine times in the last 18 matches . The sophomore had a career-high 16 kills in the four-set win over Buffalo and had a 93 .9 ser-vice reception percentage during the final 18 matches .

Fifth-year senior Logan Sulong-ga joins the Griffs for her final season of eligibility after playing three seasons at Murray State University . The 6-foot-1 native of China earned All-Ohio Valley Conference Second Team honors

Junior Emily Elek

in 2008 . She averaged 2 .60 kills per set during the 2010 season and had 799 kills in 85 career matches . Freshman Rachel Kline also joins the Canisius front row after playing four years at Central Valley High School in Pennsylvania . Kline earned All-State honors each of the last two seasons and was MVP of an All-Star Game between players from Pennsylvania and Ohio .

“For all of our pin hitters, we are running a quicker offense than we ever have, which does raise the risk a little bit,” Hummel said . “For the outside hitters to contribute to relieve the pressure from the middles, they have to be ready to keep up with the increased pace of our offense .”

SETTERS/LIBEROSThe most difficult position to replace for the Griffs will be the setter spot as Canisius graduated four-year starter Janelle Davis, who averaged a career-high 9 .36 assists per game to go along with a .439 attack percentage on just over a kill per set . The setter position has two options in junior Sydney Palka and freshman Grace Streicher . Palka has played in 50 matches during

her first two seasons, posting a career-high 36 assists in her first career match . Streicher was a three-time First-Team All-South Jersey selection, totaling 402 assists and 65 aces dur-ing her senior season .

“The two of them are understanding the bur-den isn’t going to fall on one person’s shoul-ders,” Hummel said . “It is a long season and collectively they will lead the team through-out the year . They are on the same page with the two of them being able to contribute to the one spot .”

At the libero spot, senior Allyson Severyn returns for her fourth

year as the starter for the Griffs in the different-color jersey . The 5-foot-7, Lancaster, N .Y . native has led the team in digs in each of her first three seasons and enters the 2012 campaign needing 442 digs to become the program’s all-time leader . The 2010 MAAC Libero of the Year has 10-plus digs in 81 career matches and had a career-best .965 service reception percent-age as a junior .

The Griffs have two other options on the back row in sophomore transfer Emily Litwin and freshman Jordan Tylec . After playing her first season at Binghamton, Litwin comes to Canisius after appearing in 30 matches as a freshman with the Bearcats and averaging 1 .63 digs per set . Tylec played setter at North Tonawanda and was the team MVP for the Lady Jacks .

“We have one of the top liberos in the conference and another one who is just as good in Emily Litwin,” Hummel said . “We are digging more balls defensively and giving ourselves more op-portunities offensively .”

SCHEDULECanisius spends the first three weeks of the season on the road in non-conference games, starting with this weekend’s UB Invitational . The Griffs open with the rival University at Buffalo before facing two challenging teams in Oral Roberts and San Jose State . Canisius then heads to Charleston Southern for four games and then to Rhode Island for three matches, including one against Seton Hall .

“It is going to be one of the most challenging non-conference schedules we have had in terms of com-petition, especially that first weekend,” Hummel said . “With 14 kids and seven newcomers, we can challenge a lot more people against the highest level we have seen .”

Canisius was picked fifth in the preseason MAAC coaches’ poll, behind Fairfield, Ni-agara, Manhattan and Siena . Including Iona, the top six teams of the conference look very tight and it should be a battle throughout the final weeks of the season for the last two spots in the conference tournament (Nov . 17-18 at Fairfield University) .

“Inevitably the top two teams separate them-selves the first time around in the round-robin schedule and then the three through six spots are a battle until the last matches on the last weekend,” Hum-mel said . “That top six of the conference can beat each other or lose to each other at any time, showing how the conference has gotten stronger and deeper .”

Canisius opens the conference schedule at Marist and Siena on Sept . 15-16 before heading home to host Loyola and Rider on Sept . 22-23 . After a trip to New York City for the Saint Peter’s-Manhattan weekend, the Griffs then have seven of their next 10 games at home, starting with three-time defending league champion Niagara on Oct . 6 .

“We are on the road for the non-conference schedule and for the first MAAC weekend . By that time, we should be comfortable with playing in a new gym and

ready to face talented league op-ponents,” Hummel said . “Then in October, we get a lot of matches in our gym and face our rival twice in a span of 12 days .

“It will be a battle throughout MAAC play . Hopefully we can stay in the process and come the month of November have given ourselves a chance to win our first conference championship .”

Cathy Hummel enters her 12th season at the helm of the Canisius College volleyball team and is the program’s winningest coach with 143 career victories . During the past six seasons, Canisius has a 92-88 overall record, which is the best six-year stretch in program history . The Golden Griffins have recorded 65 victories against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents during that timeframe – the third-

highest total in the league . Hummel, the longest-tenured coach in the conference, has led Canisius to the semifinals of the MAAC Championship in four of the last six seasons . The Griffs won their last six matches of the 2011 season to qualify for the postseason, sweeping each match in three sets to make the MAAC Championship . The Griffs went 10-8 in league play last year, making Canisius one of three schools in the conference to post a total of double-digit MAAC wins in five of the last six seasons . Canisius won its first MAAC Offensive Player of the Year award following the 2010 season and also earned the MAAC Libero of the Year award . The program has earned five MAAC Defensive Player/Libero of the Year awards in the last 10 years — tied with Iona for the most in the conference . In 2010, Canisius had its first All-MAAC First-Team selection since 2006 and has had 15 All-MAAC selections in the past nine seasons . At least one Golden Griffin has been named to an All-MAAC team in each of the past nine seasons, the second-longest stretch in the conference .

In the spring of 2010, the Golden Griffins received an NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program public recognition award for the third time in four seasons . The public recognition awards are presented to the best academically performing teams that rank in the top 10 percent within their sport in the NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) . The Golden Griffins were the only MAAC volleyball team to receive the honor in 2009-10 and the only MAAC volleyball program to receive the award three times the four-year span from 2006-10 . Canisius also received the award in 2006-07 and 2007-08 . Hummel earned the second MAAC Coach of the Year award of her career following the 2008 season when she led the Golden Griffins to a 17-11 overall record and 12-6 record in the MAAC, qualifying for a four-team MAAC Tournament for the first time since 1993 . In 2006, Hummel helped lead the Griffs to a school record 22 wins, with 14 of those victories coming against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents . She also guided the Blue and Gold to the team’s first appearance in the MAAC Volleyball Championship semifinal round in more than 10 years . Hummel became the second coach in program history to be honored as the MAAC’s Coach of the Year after the Blue and Gold posted a 16-13 record in 2003, the program’s first winning season in 10 years . Hummel has recruited a number of players to Canisius who have been honored by the league for their play on the floor and their work in the classroom, with 15 all-league selections, four MAAC All-Tournament picks, 11 preseason All-MAAC honorees, as well as five Defensive Players of the Year and a total of 44 MAAC All-Academic selections . Hummel was named the 10th head coach in program history March 29, 2001, after serving as an assistant coach at the University at Buffalo . Her coaching career began in 1995 as assistant coach at Division II Dowling College in Oakdale, N .Y . After consecutive NCAA appearances in 1995 and 1996 with the Golden Lions, she joined the Buffalo staff in 1997 and aided in the Bulls’ progression into the Mid-American Conference . A 1991 graduate of Hofstra University, Hummel was named Most Valuable Player at the ECAC Championships in 1988 and 1990 . Prior to playing at Hofstra, Hummel attended James Madison University for two seasons and was named the Colonial Athletic Conference MVP in 1987 . She was selected to the Wall of Fame at James Madison University in 2000 . Hummel served as a head coach for the Cheetah Volleyball program from 1995-2003 . She won two gold medals at the 2003 Empire State Games in Buffalo, one as a coach and one as a participant . Hummel coached the Western scholastic team to a top finish, then went on to help the Western open squad bring home the

tournament’s title as a player . She also accomplished this feat at the 2001 Empire State Games as well . Cathy Hummel is married to Todd Hummel, the head coach of the Canisius College golf team . They reside in North Tonawanda with their son Jaxon and daughter Jordan .

Bill MaherDirectorofAthletics

Named Director of Athletics in May 2005, Bill Maher is in his eighth year back in the Blue and Gold .

Under Maher’s watch, the Golden Griffins have enjoyed unprecedented success . In his seven seasons, Canisius teams have advanced to eight NCAA Tournaments in addition to a WNIT ap-pearance in 2009, marking the most successful seven-year run in the school’s history .

Most recently, the Canisius lacrosse pro-grams enjoyed the most successful year in conference history with both the men’s and

women’s teams winning MAAC Championships in 2012 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament . It marked the first time that one school swept both titles in the same season . In addition, the synchronized swimming team continued their dominance during the 2011-12 season, winning the program’s 15th-straight ECAC Championship .

Overall, the 17 Canisius squads have accumulated 29 conference or regional championships under Maher’s leadership, with a number of teams producing the best seasons in program history . The Canisius campus has also undergone a number of renovations, including upgrades to the Demske Sports Complex and Koessler Athletic Center .

During the past seven seasons, 34 student-athletes have won conference player or rookie of the year awards, including six in each of the past two seasons . Prior to Maher’s arrival, Canisius won 24 player or rookie of the year awards in the previous 10 seasons combined .

The achievements of Griffs go past graduation as well . Under Maher’s watch, 13 players have been drafted professionally . In 2011, Canisius was the only school in the country with two first-round selections in the National Lacrosse League Draft . In addition, former Griff John Axford pitches with the Milwaukee Brew-ers, while two hockey graduates have signed NHL contracts .

To go along with the school’s success on a team and individual level, Canisius has controlled the Battle of the Bridge series with local rival Niagara University . In four of the last five campaigns, the Griffs have claimed the Canal Cup, which is an all-sports competition between the two neighboring schools .

On an academic level during Maher’s tenure, Canisius has had 21 student-athletes recognized on the district level as Capital One CoSIDA All-Academic selections, including seven Capital One Academic All-Americans during the last three years .

Maher has overseen numerous renovations to the Koessler Athletic Center and the Demske Sports Complex . A new Center for Athletic Training opened in May 2007 . New locker rooms were constructed for all female teams and finished in

2008, while the men and women’s basketball teams each received new locker rooms in the summer of 2008 . The Demske Sports Complex received a $1 .7 mil-lion facelift with the installation of new A-Turf as well as new scoreboards in 2008 . New offices for head coaches and their assistants along with new locker rooms for all of the men’s teams were constructed in 2010 .

GoGriffs .com, the official web site of Canisius athletics, has undergone two re-designs under Maher . The department has also developed a video webstreaming package for all home events in seven sports (men’s and women’s soccer, vol-leyball, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s lacrosse) and is a part of the MAAC .TV package .

Maher is the MAAC’s representative to the NCAA Legislative Council, which has one representative from each of the 31 Division I conferences . He chairs the MAAC men’s lacrosse committee and is also a member of the MAAC Technology Committee . Canisius has hosted eight MAAC Championships since 2005 and will also be hosting the 2013 Swimming and Diving Championships and the 2013 Women’s Lacrosse Championship .

A Canisius graduate and former assistant athletic director at the school, Maher spent seven years at the University at Buffalo and served as the Bulls’ interim athletic director from 2003-05 .

During his tenure as the interim athletic director at Buffalo, Maher helped UB Athletics oversee $3 .6 million in capital improvements to its athletic facilities, restructure the school’s Blue & White Club fund drive for athletics, which gen-erated $1 million during the 2003-04 season, and develop marketing campaigns which increased attendance at athletic events .

He also oversaw the development of the men’s basketball program, which set a school record for victories and earned the first postseason bid in school history with an invitation to the 2005 National Invitation Tournament . Under his watch, the Bulls’ RPI increased from 284 in 2003 to as high as 34 during the 2004-05 season .

Maher was a four-year letterwinner on the Canisius College football team from 1985-88 and earned All-America honorable mention honors as a senior . He re-ceived his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Canisius in 1989 and his master’s degree in sport management from East Stroudsburg University in 1990 . Following an internship with the New York Knicks, Maher returned to Canisius in 1991, becoming the assistant athletic director for compliance in 1994 .

He became the director of compliance at the University at Buffalo in 1998, where he moved up the ranks and was named senior associate athletic director in 2002 . In that role, he managed the day-to-day operations of the Division of Athletics, including the direct supervision of Buffalo’s football and men’s and women’s basketball programs, in addition to the office of compliance and the office of student-athlete services .
