2010‐11 YEAR IN REVIEW
The Saint Joseph’s men’s rowing team was under the guidance of a newcoach in 2010‐11, as former assistant Dan Goettner was named interim headcoach for the season.
The Hawks, with 10 seniors on the squad, showed great improvement asthe season went on and began to peak at the end of the year. Goettner andhis crew were convinced that if the season was just a few weeks longer, theymight have achieved even better results.
In the season‐ending Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta, the Hawks boatedthree Eights and two Fours and faced one of the fastest fields in recent histo‐ry. Saint Joseph’s advanced the Varsity 4, Lightweight 8 and Second Varsity 8to the semifinals, while the Lightweight 8 was the lone boat to qualify for theGrand Finals. That crew turned in SJU’s best finish at Dad Vails, taking fourthplace, with a crew comprised of: Brandon Ciccone, Nick Hoell, Sean Stewart,Matt Benedetto, Michael Gibel, Ryan Pawling, Matt Johnson, Tom Garry andChris Young.
At the Bergen Cup, which represents the city championship, the Hawksgarnered a fourth‐place finish in the Varsity 8, and saw its “A” and “B” boatsplace second and third, respectively, in the Varsity 4.
The Hawks were up the challenge of the competitive field at the SIRARegatta, with the Lightweight 8 finishing in second place, for one of the high‐lights of the season. The Varsity 4 also placed second in the “B” Final.
Competing at the Knecht Cup on the Cooper River in early April, SaintJoseph’s Lightweight 8 took second place, as did the Freshman 4. The SecondVarsity 8 finished fourth while the Varsity 8 was fifth in the Petite Final.
The Freshman 4 posted first‐place finishes in the two early season races, the Jesuit Invitational and the Murphy Cup. The SJU also recorded second‐place finishes in the Varsity 8 and the Second Varsity 8 at the JesuitInvitational, while the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 each finished third at theMurphy Cup.
Juniors Matt Benedetto and Sean Stewart, who were both members ofthe Lightweight 8, were recognized for their accomplishments in the class‐room with selection to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All‐Area Team. Itmarked the first time that two Hawks received recognition in the same year.

2011‐12 SAINT JOSEPH’S MEN’S ROWING MEDIA GUIDE10
Although not the oldest sport at Saint Joseph’s University, the Hawk row‐ing program has established itself as arguably one of the most successful inthe school’s long and storied athletics history. Making its mark onPhiladelphia’s famed Schuylkill River since 1954, SJU rowing celebrated its50th anniversary in 2003‐04.
First emerging as a club sport in 1954, rowing received official varsity sta‐tus in 1959 and immediate respect when Al Rosenberg was named headcoach. Rosenberg had helped the United States to a gold medal at the 1954Pan Am Games and a silver at the 1958 European Championships. He guidedthe SJU program for just two seasons before taking over national team boats, but laid the groundwork for future success.
Legendary coach Joe Toland took over for Rosenberg and established SJUas one of the East’s most successful programs from 1961‐73. Toland helped SJUto six championships in Bergen Cup competition, as well as three President’sCup crowns. His varsity heavyweight eights advanced to the Dad Vail final in 12of his 13 seasons. The V8 accomplished the greatest feat of the early era ofHawk rowing by winning the Dad Vail in 1970 and the team captured theBratton Trophy as the overall points champion in 1971. Six of Toland’s formerHawks would go on to represent the U.S. in international competition.
Toland relinquished the reins of the Hawk program to one of his formerHawk standouts, Jim Glavin. A member of SJU’s 1970 Dad Vail champs, Glavinwould go on to coach several junior national team boats. With the face of theUniversity changing, the rowing program returned to club status followingthe 1975 season, but continued to produce strong crews throughout the1970s and 1980s.
Rowing returned as an official varsity sport in 1991 and the programquickly reclaimed its status among the nation’s best. In 1999, the Hawk menpenned, arguably the greatest feat in school history, matching the great 1971Hawk squad by winning the Dad Vail points title for the second time in schoolhistory and competing at the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta on the ThamesRiver in London, England.
The University affirmed its commitment to rowing by breaking ground, along with St. Joseph’s Prep, on a state‐of‐the‐art boathouse along theSchuylkill River. Named in honor of Robert Gillin, Jr., construction was com‐pleted in time for the 2002 Dad Vail Regatta and provides a permanent homefor the Hawk rowing programs.
Former SJU standout Drew Hill took over as head coach of the SJU pro‐gram in 2003 and immediately made his presence felt. Sixteen Hawk boatsadvanced to the Dad Vail finals (15 claiming medals) in his first five seasons, and SJU matched the 1971 and 1999 squads by capturing the men’s pointstitle in 2003, 2005 and 2006.
Individually, 12 former Hawks have competed internationally and sevenhave been inducted into the Saint Joseph’s Athletics Hall of Fame, includingGlavin, Toland, Richard and Donald Flanigan ‘60, Joe Henwood ‘68, ChrisO’Brien ‘92 and Mike Teti ‘78.
Arguably the best‐known oarsman in America, Mike Teti was a top Hawkrower, graduating from SJU with a sociology degree in 1978.
“Saint Joseph’s gave me the opportunity to compete and also the oppor‐tunity for a great education,” Teti says. “I owe SJU a great debt for all of theopportunities I received.”
From 1977‐93, Teti rowed on 11 national teams, including three trips tothe Olympic Games. He won 24 national championships, a gold medal in themen’s eight at the 1987 World Championships and a bronze medal in thesame event at the 1988 Olympics. He was named the 1987 United StatesRowing Male Athlete of the Year.
Teti achieved even greater notoriety as a coach, guiding the U.S. men’sopen eight squad to an unprecedented three straight world championships. He also coached the men’s four with coxswain to world championship gold.In 1996 he led the lightweight men’s four to an Olympic bronze medal beforebeing named USRowing’s Head Men’s Sweep Coach, the highest coachinghonor in the country, in October of that year.
Teti became the U.S. Olympic coach following the 2000 Games, and ledthe men’s eight boat to gold in Athens in 2004, a feat that the United Stateshad not achieved since 1964 when another coach with Hawk ties, AlRosenberg, led the Americans to victory. Teti also guided the U.S. Men to thebronze medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Teti is currently the head coach of the men’s crew team at the Universityof California and was inducted into the National Rowing Federation’s Hall ofFame in 2010. A more recent Hawk to make his mark on the international scene was 2011
graduate Ryan Pawling. As a freshman, Pawling coxed the Adaptive MixedFour squad to fifth place in the World Championships in Munich in 2007,which qualified the crew for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
The 1971 crew, under legendary coach Joe Toland, captured the points title at the DadVail Regatta.
SJU Athletics Hall of Famer Mike Teti was the head coach for the 2008 U.S. Olympicteam, guiding the U.S. to the bronze medal in Beijing.

JESUIT INVITATIONAL
Saint Joseph’s Rowing established the Jesuit Invitational in 1999 and it has become a major race in the collegiate rowing season, featuring solely Jesuit col‐leges. The Jesuit Invitational is held every year in March on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. The Casey Ferrone Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Men’s Varsity 8 champion, while the Robert Gillin, Jr., Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Women’s
Varsity 8 winner. The Cannonball Trophy is given to the overall team champion. It is named in honor of Saint Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, who had his
leg shattered by a cannonball while defending Spain from an attack by France. The Cannonball Trophy serves as a reminder that all good things start with pain. The glory of winning is only possible by withstanding the mental and physical pain of the 2000m race course. The trophy is awarded to the school with thehighest combined points in the day’s races. It is a traveling trophy which the winner returns every year. The winning team receives a small cannonball that istheirs to keep as a reminder of their championship performance.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant
motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto,“The Hawk Will Never Die”.
Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At thattime, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name wasappropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive ofthe aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJUfollowing the 1939 season.
The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 55‐year history. It has been selected as thenation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’sBasketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketballmagazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall ofFame.
