Great Tradition • Brighter Future www.nsudemons.com 92010 Southland Conference Champions • 2010 Southland Conference tournament Champions • 2010 NCAA Tournament

So, what goals can you set when ateam brings everybody back from aseason that can hardly be topped?

Welcome to your first year as headcoach at Northwestern State, LucGodin.

Welcome to what your recruitingand coaching helped develop, in yourtwo years (2008-09) as assistant coachunder Patric DuBois.

What the Lady Demon tennis teamdid while you were way almost defiesexplanation. It's not just that the 2010squad went 21-2, or that they wereunbeaten against SouthlandConference opponents. It's not that justthat they won the SouthlandConference regular-season and tour-nament championships.

It's not just that they became NSU'sfirst entry in the NCAA TeamTournament, or that sophomoreMartina Rubesova became the firstLady Demon to reach the NCAASingles Championships' 64-womandraw.

It's how they did all that, and whothey are. Remarkable competitors, whowon close, hard-fought match after

close-hard fought match. Great team-mates, who wanted success for theother girls more than they wanted it forthemselves. Great friends.

An incredible 2010 season willnever be forgotten. But temporarily, itmust be, to some degree. That wasthen, this is now.

Maybe to some opponents, whatNSU did last year might be daunting toconsider. More likely, it will be incentiveto beat the Lady Demons. Godin andhis team realize the situation, andembrace it.

“We've got the bullseye on ourbacks,” he says. “There are three posi-tions to play. You're either the under-dog, you're even or you're the favorite, and without losing anybody, we're obvi-ously the favorite after what the teamaccomplished last year. It's been a longtime since Northwestern State tennishas been in that position.

“Overall, the girls are excited aboutit. Everybody loves an underdog butmost of the time, the underdog doesn'twin. We prefer being the favorite. It'ssomething the team earned and it's achallenge we embrace. It helps moti-vate us. We know teams are coming for

us and we want to maintain our stature,so it makes us work harder. It's allowedus to have better practices and stayfocused. It's exciting to see if we canfinish the year No. 1.

The obvious temptation for a newcoach coming in with the whole squadback from that kind season would be -don't change a thing. Take the sameapproach. Use the same lineup. Butpeople don't stay the same.Circumstances change. And so mustthe approach. During the fall season,Godin experimented with doubles com-binations, partly out of necessity, sincesenior Kathrin Lange was back homedoing an internship to graduate thisspring. Bianca Schulz had to haveanother partner. But in scheduling, andin planning for 2011, Godin embracedthe possibility of change.

“We want to put ourselves in theposition of playing a lot of matchesearly in the season to evaluate ourteam, try out some different doublescombinations, work on a few things, look at a few different lineups in singles. These are all matches that should becompetitive, and will put us in position

to win, and get ourselves ready for theheart of the conference race.”

He also purposefully ramped up thenon-conference schedule. It's not likelythis year's team will match the gaudyrecord of a year ago, and that's fine, hesays. What he, and the players want, isto be an even better team at season'send - to have improved individually, andas a team, to have been pushed andchallenged, and the 2011 scheduledoes that.

“We're excited about playing nation-ally-ranked teams, which will happenwhen we're at North Texas. We enjoyplaying our neighbors in the Sun Beltand Conference USA. We've shown inthe past couple of years, we've compet-ed well against teams from those con-ferences. We're going to be playing aTexas-El Paso team which has tradi-tionally been a strong opponent, sothat's another milepost in our prepara-tion for the conference season.

“We could have a better team thanlast year, and get into the thick of ourconference race with a record not asoutstanding as we were at that point ayear ago. It could happen. We are play-ing a stronger out-of-conference sched-ule this year, as we should with such an

experienced team. If everything goeswell together, if we're fortunate not tohave injuries, then we have the oppor-tunity to compete and win hopefully onthe scale that was done here last year.We have a couple younger players whoare pushing to get in the lineup.

We don't want to maintain, we wantto be stepping forward, and the onlyway to do that is to put ourselves intougher situations with better competi-tion. We did that with our trip to Florida, where we faced 3-4 schools ranked inthe top 30 nationally, and it helped us.We had a few questions about doubles,we weren't sure how we were going toapproach things, but this fall gave usthe opportunity to see a couple differentformations that we liked. It definitelygives us options, which is something asa coach you always want and don'talways have. We have our six returningstarters and we have two players whohave shown they are ready to jump in ifwe need them, which is a great thing. We worked hard in the fall, at a veryhigh tempo, and the girls are excitedand comfortable with that rhythm. If wecan maintain it through the season wecould be very successful.”

It's not only tougher out of confer-

ence. League play will be at a higherlevel than before, and it was alreadypretty good.

“The Southland Conference is reallymaking a big step forward in tennis. Weare becoming one of the best confer-ences in our sport for several reasons. One is our location, where you can playtennis outdoors year round. Some ofour conference members have madecoaching hires and commitments totheir programs that are obviously goingto be beneficial. UTA is going to be verytough, well coached, and everybodyelse seems to have picked it up. Thelevel of tennis in our conference is tothe point where I think the No. 6 or 7team would have had a chance to winthe conference championship maybe 4-5 years ago. It's going to be really excit-ing. The conference matches will be agood challenge which will help youimprove.”

That's Godin's goal - for the 2011team, and for Lady Demon tennis, every day, and all the way. Get better -because you don't stay the same. Yourise, or fall, each day. He has no doubtwhich direction NSU tennis is heading, and neither do his players.

The sky's the limit!

As far as gettingplaying time, it's a tough situation for her to come into, with the entire team back from last year. There aren't anyspots open to expect a freshman to step into, when youlook at the players who are here. The good news is she'staking the challenge, not turning away. She's made somehuge steps forward, but she will not be happy until shegets into our singles lineup. That's exciting to have a girlwith that kind of discipline and determination. She took thefall to work on some things with her game we wanted toswitch, and we've seen constant improvement. The level oftennis went up, the confidence level went up, and right nowif we have to call upon her, we feel she could give us a goodperformance and would score points for us. Godin on Peters: “Lauren Peters came in last year andstruggled finding a place to play in this lineup. She is agreat, not a good but a great, team player. She had agood junior career, and came here and became a smallfish in a big pond. It's difficult to come in as a freshmanwhen you have a very experienced team that is ultimatelygoing to win a conference championship. We've made afew changes in her game that have worked really well forher. She's probably one of our best practice players. It'scoming around and it's just a matter of timing. Lauren all ofa sudden has put herself in a position where she could beasked to get us points this spring. It's nice as a coach tosee players like Lauren showing persistence, be open tochanging her game, and then take that coaching and actual-ly making the improvement you hope to see. Also, Rubesova and Lange earnedfirst team All-SLC in singles competitionwhile Bazhanova, Nedorostova andSchulz picked up second team honors.

Rubesova, who was named theLouisiana Player of the Year and

She was 18-0 in singles play duringthe spring and 33-1 overall in 2009-10until her NCAA defeat at the hands ofGeorgia All-American ChelseyGullickson.

SLC Tournament Championship RecapOlga Bazhanova's third-set 7-5 win

The victory was the 20th consecu-tive for Northwestern (21-1), which was

out a 6-4, 6-7 (7-4), 7-5 victory to handNSU the tournament title.

Northwestern notched its first pointin trademark fashion, although not with-out difficulty in taking the doubles point.Rubesova and Andrea Nedorostovawon the No. 2 match 8-4 (going 19-0this spring), then Bazhanova/Curukovictook the No. 1 position 8-6. UTA was up7-6 in the No. 3 doubles when NSUclinched the point with the No. 1 win.

That raised the Lady Demons to 56-5 in doubles play, including 37-2against conference foes, this spring.

NCAA Tournament RecapIn a 4-0 win on May 14 over

Northwestern State, No. 1-rankedBaylor didn't get the cakewalk thescore could indicate or a top seedwould expect in the first round of theNCAA Women's TennisChampionships.

A comeback from a 5-0 deficit at No.3 sparked Baylor to claim the doublespoint, and while the Lady Bears con-trolled three singles matches to clinchthe overall outcome, the Lady Demonswere extremely competitive in the otherthree, including a first-set 7-5 win from

unbeaten Martina Rubesova in the No.3 position.

After a three-hour rain delay inter-rupted singles play, two other LadyDemons rebounded mightily from first-set 6-0 routs. At No. 1, OlgaBazhanova was knotted 4-4 in the sec-ond set with the No. 5-ranked player inthe country, Lenka Broosova. At No. 6,Bianca Schulz was also even at 4-4against Cria Lindlar.

By dropping only two games in theother three singles (Nos. 2, 4 and 5)Baylor won its 22nd consecutive con-test and improved to 28-2, including 21victories over ranked foes. With fourTop 100-ranked singles players, theLady Bears advanced to Saturday'sregional final at the Baylor TennisCenter against No. 32 Tulsa, a 4-2 win-ner earlier Friday over North Texas.Northwestern ended its greatest sea-son in three decades of women's tenniswith a sparkling 21-2 record after itsfirst defeat in 20 matches. Rubesova, ranked 121st nationally and headed tothe 64-woman singles draw May 26 atthe NCAA Championships, took herfirst set from No. 55 Taylor Ormand ofBaylor.

The Lady Demons opened quickleads in two of the three doublesmatches, with the junior tandem ofteam captain Kathrin Lange and BiancaSchulz rolling to a 5-0 lead overOrmond and Lindlar. But Baylor won 8of the next 9 games to recover and postan 8-6 decision at No. 3.

That outcome handed the LadyBears the doubles point because earli-er, the nation's No. 11-ranked doublespairing, Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi, closed out an 8-3 decision at No. 1 overBazhanova and Adna Curukovic.

When the rain delay struck,Rubesova and Lange were the only twoNSU players to notch game wins in sin-gles, as the Lady Bears were dominat-ing.

In an era of considerable change in intercollegiate athletics, the Southland Conferencecontinues to be a model of innovation, stability and consistent achievement as it celebratesthe academic and athletic accomplishments of its member institutions.

What began as a small gathering of college administrators more than 45 years ago, theSouthland Conference has transformed itself into a dynamic and respected consortium of 12member universities in three states. Beginning with a historic meeting of five institutions inDallas on March 15, 1963, that included current members Lamar University (then Lamar StateCollege of Technology) and the University of Texas at Arlington (then Arlington State College),the Southland Conference set on an extraordinary course that has proven successful well intoits fifth decade of existence.

On July 1, 2006, the Southland Conference commemorated another milestone as theleague membership reached 12, marking the largest configuration ever for the organization. The addition of the University of Central Arkansas and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christiexpanded the Southland into the Little Rock metro area and into the eighth largest city inTexas. Central Arkansas and A&M-Corpus Christi enhanced the Southland Conference in innu-merable ways, including athletic and academic successes, strong and principled leadership, and strong fan support and media coverage.

In addition to its two newest members, the Southland Conference lineup also consists ofLamar University, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern StateUniversity, Sam Houston State University, Southeastern Louisiana University, Stephen F.Austin State University, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at SanAntonio, and Texas State University-San Marcos.

All told, the revised membership of the Southland encompasses more than 180,000 cur-rent students and an alumni base of approximately 920,000. The cities of the Southland are diverse and progressive, ranging from international busi-ness and cultural centers such as the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, San Antonio and the NewOrleans area, to the historical cities of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Natchitoches, La., to thehome of the modern oil boom, Beaumont, Texas, to the unique Cajun French cultures found inthe Louisiana cities of Thibodaux and Lake Charles. Southland Conference institutions alsodraw large numbers of students from the metropolitan areas of Houston, Little Rock, BatonRouge, Austin, and Shreveport.

The Southland sponsors 17 championship sports, all at the NCAA Division I level. Theeight men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, andindoor and outdoor track and field. Tennis at Northwestern State dates back tothe earliest days of the institution. Dating backto the early 1900s, there are photos of studentsplaying tennis, in a day when all but a few stu-dents at Louisiana Normal School were womentraining to be teachers.

More than a century later, with plenty of his-tory in place, women's tennis is annually one ofthe strongest sports at what is nowNorthwestern State University. An official inter-collegiate women's team dawned in the late1970s as additional women's sports popped upin college tennis around the country, thanks tothe creation of Title IX spurring formalized com-petition in many women's sports that were pre-viously contested on the club level.

During those days, NSU had an extremelystrong men's tennis program -- so strong that inthe late 1970s, the Demons were ranked in theNCAA's Top 20 and played in the NCAADivision I Championships in Athens, Georgia.

Under coach Johnnie Emmons, theDemons produced All-Americans GreggManning and Ricardo Acuna. Among severalplayers who became professionals, Acunareached the game's greatest levels. In 1985, hewas a singles quarterfinalist at Wimbledon. Hewas voted by his peers to serve on theAssociation of Tennis Professionals board andremained in that capacity for several years. Hewas ranked as highly as No. 47 in the world inMarch 1986, won three ATP doubles titles in hiscareer, and since has been associated with theATP as a coach and player development officialafter his playing career wound up. Acuna wasNSU’s first NCAA All-American (Manning wonthe honor in the NAIA) and never lost to aLouisiana opponent during his career.

A former Lady Demon standout, EmilyNichols, has been in the highest of tennis cir-cles around the pro courts. She was part of aNo. 19 nationally-ranked doubles team for NSUin 1993 and helped the 1994 Lady Demons winthe Southland Conference championship. Aftergoing home to England, she worked for theLawn Tennis Association for five years, as apress officer working with, among other events, the Wimbledon Championships. She is current-ly a senior account director for ProgressiveSports and Entertainment, working with theBarclays ATP World Tour Finals, and hasworked with the International TennisFederation, the 2004 Olympic Games, theFrench Tennis Federation (French Open),Tennis Australia and with the Davis Cup series.

Modern-day tennis at Northwestern waslaunched in 1970 when Emmons, hired as afootball assistant coach, was named head ten-nis coach for a men's program. He soon devel-oped a friendship with Nick Bollettieri andattended the Junior Orange BowlChampionships each year, looking for interna-tional prospects. It led to a tradition of global

influence producing a strong program that con-tinues at NSU today.

In 1972, Carlos Blanco, a Bolivian native, became the first in a long line of foreign tennisplayers to attend NSU, bringing the Demonsone of the strongest programs in the region.

Many recruits and three years later, NSUbecame a force to be reckoned with, winningthe school’s first conference championship(Gulf South) and fashioning a 23-4 record. With Acuna, Manning, Willie Paz and Blancoamong the stars, NSU developed into a power-house that lost just four matches over threeyears -- going 24-1 in 1976, 22-1 in 1977 and16-2 in 1978. Emmons remembers the play-ers from that era as if it were yesterday.

“As any coach knows, the number one rea-son for success is the material that you have towork with. Gregg Manning, Juan Lopez, LuisVarela, Steve Fricker, Mike Phillips, JosedeCamino and Ricardo Acuna - those playersput Northwestern State on the map.”

Emmons is most proud of the fact that histeams had just two losing seasons in 17 years. But that is just one item on a long list of accom-plishments.

“Every player that played here for four yearsgraduated and all are successful in life. Someare judges, lawyers, engineers, and tennispros. All of my players were hard workers and

were respectful of everyone. They gave thealumni of Northwestern a winning program andone that could be identified with.”

That tradition transferred to the LadyDemons program. Emmons took over as headbaseball coach in his final three seasons (1986-89) and relied upon graduate assistants to helprun the women's team which won theSouthland championship in 1989 underEmmons and Alex Kukaros. He was followedby Patric DuBois, who became the first full-timewomen's tennis coach and had a strong run ofsuccess from 1990-94 culminating with the1994 Southland crown as Ljudmila Pavlovranked as highly as No. 33 nationally in singles.DuBois moved on, only to return in 2007 to cre-ate a renaissance for NSU tennis -- which isback where it's often been, a program regional-ly and nationally respected, bringing in playersfrom near and far bonding to produce champi-onship play and the highest level of academicsuccess.

Tennis at NSU dates back to the early 1900s; took off in the 70s

Ricardo Acuna was NSU’s first NCAA All-American and advanced to the Round of 8 at the 1985Winbledon Championships.

Harry Briggs

Great Tradition • Brighter Future www.nsudemons.com 312010 Southland Conference Champions • 2010 Southland Conference tournament Champions • 2010 NCAA Tournament

"The Paddlin' Professor," 90-year-old Northwestern State adjunct politicalscience instructor Dr. Harry Briggs has used his favorite hobby to benefitthe NSU Lady Demon tennis program for the past ten years.

Briggs, a Marine Corps veteran of World War II battles in the PacificTheatre at Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa, is an adjunct political scienceprofessor at NSU's Leesville-Fort Polk campus.

His swims are designed to bring attention to the Northwestern LadyDemon tennis team and to raise funds for the Lydia Briggs TennisScholarship and the Harry Briggs Tennis Support Fund at NSU.

"There are two reasons to do it, and the first is selfish," he said. "I wantto see if I can still do it. People get older and too often, lose the desire tochallenge themselves.”

"Secondly, but more important, it's a chance to help Northwestern Stateand the Lady Demon tennis program. It's a great university, and I say thatas a fellow who's been all over this country and all around the world.Getting involved with the tennis team has been an outstanding experi-ence."

Briggs, no novice swimmer, is a member of the International SwimmingHall of Fame in recognition of his 43 long-distance swims. In 1998 on his77th birthday he spent 14 hours crossing Tampa Bay, swimming sevenmiles against the current.

His most notable swimming feat was becoming the first person to swimacross Lake Erie in 1947. Briggs swam for 35 hours, 55 minutes and cov-ered 32 miles from Sandusky, Ohio, to Point Pelee, Ontario. Acclaimedauthor Gay Talese, writing a profile of Briggs for the New York Times inthe early 1950s, gave him the nickname "The Paddlin' Professor." Heappeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" after his swim and was featured inSports Illustrated.

Now, he's content knowing his annual outings don't get that kind of atten-tion – although Shreveport, Alexandria and Lake Charles media outletshave covered his last two annual challenges -- but in any case, they havelasting impact by providing scholarship opportunities for NSU students.

Eight years ago, as the centerpiece of a series of three swims, Briggs dideight miles on Cane River Lake. Since then, he's done two miles eachyear in Natchitoches. In 2006, Briggs completed three two-mile swims onthe Red River in Shreveport, Alexandria, and Natchitoches. two summersago, he covered two miles on Cross Lake in Shreveport in 3:16, appropri-ately beginning his swim at the American Legion outpost.

“This was my toughest challenge yet,” said Briggs. “But the great thingwas that I felt better after I finished than I did before I started.”

Briggs made his swim in 2007 despite learning a few weeks earlier thanhe was suffering from prolonged carbon monoxide poisoning.

“Harry is one of the most remarkable people anyone could meet,” saidLady Demon tennis coach Patric DuBois. “The experiences and accom-plishments he has had in life could fill volumes. We are very fortunate tohave a friend to our team in Harry Briggs. He is an inspiration to all ofus.”

Just recently Briggs was honored by Tufts University, where he attendedschool, when they retired his No. 9 hockey jersey. He later went on tocoach at Tufts, he later went on to pursue a professional hockey career.

To contribute to the Briggs Scholarship, in any amount, contact Dr.William Broussard in the NSU Athletic Association at 318-357-4295 or [email protected] by e-mail.

FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS, THE “PADDLIN’PROFESSOR” HAS AIDED THE NSUWOMEN’S TENNIS PROGRAM WITH ASCHOLARSHIP FUND IN MEMORY OF HISWIFE, AN AVID TENNIS PLAYER.
