An institution within Belmont Athletics, Jeff Langdon enters his fifteenth year as Belmont'shead coach for the men's cross country and track teams.

Since joining the Atlantic Sun Conference in the fall of 2001, Belmont University hasbecome synonymous with cross country success. Under Langdon's leadership, BU has won astaggering six consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, the most recent in 2007in dominating fashion. The Bruins had four out of the top eight finishers, including individual

champion, Collin Magut.

Four Bruins were named All-Atlantic Sun and Hilary Cheruiyot earned A-Sun Freshman of the Year honors. Langdonalso was named Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year for a sixth time.

Undoubtly, since the program's move to Division I eight years ago, the men's cross country program has been themodel of consistency. In addition to his conference titles, Langdon's teams have finished in the top-12 at the NCAASouth Regional each of the past nine years. All told, Langdon has produced 11 All-Region runners and 24 All-Atlantic Sun performers.

Adding to the team's competitive success, they have also excelled in the classroom. This past year, nine Bruin run-ners earned Academic All-Conference distinction. Furthermore, the program had the highest team grade pointaverage in Division I during the 2007 according to the United States Cross Country Coaches Association. Belmontalso received this honor in 2005.

The BU track and field program has also emerged under Langdon's direction, and is coming off of its most suc-cessful season in program history. The Bruin indoor team finished aschool-best second place at the 2007 A-Sun Indoor Championship, highlighted by Hillary Cheruiyot earning meet Most OutstandingPerformer honors. In all, Belmont won five individual titles. The highlevel of competition carried into the outdoor season, as BU onceagain earned a program-best finish, this time third. Belmont had fourindividual champions, most notably Collin Magut winning the 800mand earning two seconds en route to his second consecutive MostOutstanding Track Performer award. Magut, Ryan Snellen, and JacobBuckman also qualified for the NCAA Regional meet in the 5000m.With 24 total All-Atlantic Sun honorees from the two seasons, 2007was unquestionably a banner year for Belmont Track & Field.

For Langdon, coaching is a natural extension from his competitivedays at Belmont where he ran from 1979-83. He was an outdoortrack All-American in the marathon, an Academic All-American andthe 1982 District 24 Individual Champion in the marathon. Langdonwas inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in September of1994.

A native of Fairfield, Ohio, Jeff and his wife Kelly, also a Belmontgraduate, have one daughter, Jenna.

In the mid-1800s, the campus was known as Adelicia Acklen'sBelle Monte estate. The antebellum mansion remains today, flanked by university buildings separated in age by a century. The first educational institution on the estate was the originalBelmont College (1890-1913), offering elementary schoolthrough junior college education to young ladies. The schoolmerged with Ward Seminary to become the prestigious Ward-Belmont School for Women (1913-1951) and in 1951 becamethe coed Belmont College. In 1991, the college becameBelmont University and, this year, began the 115th year ofhigher education on this site.

Belmont continually reflects its rich heritage as it excels in theacademic area. Last year, U.S. News & World Report namedBelmont University in the top 20 of the best colleges and uni-versities in the South in the magazine's "master's" category.

VISION

Belmont's vision is to be a premier teaching university bringingtogether the best of liberal arts and professional education ina Christian community of learning and service.

Belmont strives to enable men and women from diverse back-grounds to engage and transform the world with disciplinedintelligence, compassion, courage and faith.

Believing that every student is created for a purpose in life,Belmont encourages students to explore their passions anddevelop their talents to meet the world's needs.

ACADEMICS AND MORE

Belmont's boundaries continue to extend beyond the Nashvillecampus through its Cool Springs campus south of Nashville andorganized programs such as the Washington Center programand music business' Belmont West in Los Angeles and BelmontEast in New York City. Study-abroadprograms place students in China,Costa Rica, Great Britain, France,Germany, Italy, Russia, South Africaand Spain. Belmont also serves as aregional center of the East-WestCenter for the Development of AsianStudies.

Vital to the Belmont student experi-ence are service learning, volun-teerism and mission projects thatinvest in surroundingcommunities.Through the efforts ofstudents and faculty, Belmont hastouched lives in Nashville's charitableorganizations, its growing Hispaniccommunity, area tutoring programs, neighboring businesses and mentoringprograms, as well as inner-city andoverseas mission projects, includingtrips to the Appalachian Mountains and

the Ukraine.

Among its student body of over 5,000, are students from near-ly every state and more than 25 countries. In addition to sevenbaccalaureate degrees in over 60 areas of study, Belmont offersmaster's degrees in Business Administration, Accountancy,English, Education (including Sport Administration), Music,Nursing and Occupational Therapy, and doctorates inOccupational Therapy and Physical Therapy.

Under the leadership of President Robert Fisher, Belmont cele-brates more than a century of academic heritage. Perhaps mostnotably, Belmont rose five spots in the latest annual ranking ofAmerica’s best colleges and universities in U.S. News & WorldReport and is now ranked 10th in the South in the “BestUniversities – Masters” category. Belmont has risen 11 spots inthe annual U.S. News ranking since 2003. Also noteworthy,Belmont has earned the Atlantic Sun Academic ChampionTrophy six of the last seven years - with over 70 percent of itsstudent-athletes with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in 2007-08.

Moreover, Belmont has opened sev-eral impressive new facilities oncampus which have enhanced thelearning environment: the MasseyPerforming Arts Center, the CurbEvent Center, and the newlyunveiled Gordon E. Inman Center. Then came word Belmont would hostthe 2008 Presidential Town HallDebate, further exposing the schoolto a global audience.

In short, Belmont has experiencedremarkable growth and achievement- increases in average ACT scores, innovative program development, impressive campus expansion, landand facility development and estab-lishing itself as a national leader inquality improvement.

Dr. Robert (Bob) Fisher serves as President ofBelmont University, a position he has held sinceApril 2000.

During his tenure the university's enrollment hasrisen by nearly 70 percent while the campus itselfhas expanded significantly with the additions of

the Curb Event Center and Beaman Student Life Center, the Gordon E. InmanCenter, the Troutt Theater complex and several new residence halls andparking garages. But Dr. Fisher's greatest sense of accomplishment comes notfrom new campus structures, stronger endowments or a larger student body.Rather, he measures achievement through witnessing education's impact oneach individual student.

"The student is the focus of all our efforts here at Belmont," Fisher said, "andour top priority is meeting the needs of those students. My life's mission is tohelp create experiences that transform people, especially students, in waysthat enable them to become all they were created to be."

Prior to his appointment at Belmont, Fisher was vice president for academicaffairs at Arkansas State University for four years and was dean of the Schoolof Business at Henderson State University, his alma mater, for 10 years. Now entering his 14th year as Director of Athletics,Mike Strickland has led Belmont's Department ofAthletics through its infancy stages as a new NCAADivision I program to become one that sees annualsuccess on the field and in the classroom. Duringhis tenure at Belmont, the program has expanded

the number of teams it fields, joined the Atlantic Sun Conference, enhancedits facilities, and established a reputation producing winning teams and dis-tinguished student-athletes.

Since arriving in Nashville in 1996, Strickland has overseen the inception ofsix new sports at Belmont: women's soccer, women's golf and men's andwomen's indoor and outdoor track and field. In addition, the University hasbuilt the Frances Bond Davis Tennis Courts and the Whitten Soccer Complex,as well the most recent partnership with Metro Parks for athletic fields atRose Park. This exciting new venture will house Belmont baseball, softball, soccer, and track & field. Two of the most important achievements of histenure at Belmont are the acceptance of Belmont into the Atlantic SunConference and the opening of the Curb Event Center. During his tenure,Strickland has overseen a program expansion from 11 to 17 teams of compe-tition, spearheaded membership into the Atlantic Sun Conference, spurredathletic facility enhancement and forged a reputation of producing winningteams and distinguished student-athletes. In 2008, Belmont became the firstschool in Atlantic Sun Conference history to represent the league in threeconsecutive NCAA Men's Basketball Championships. Adding conference cham-pionships in women's cross country, women's soccer and volleyball during thepast academic year, Belmont Athletics has won a staggering 26 Atlantic SunConference Championships since becoming a member institution in 2001-02 -far and away the league standard. In addition, the school has hosted nineconference championships over the past five years, most recently the 2006

A-Sun Volleyball Championship. Strickland has taken a leadership role in theA-Sun serving as chairman of the tournament committee and presently servesas a member of the conference's membership committee. As well as the pro-gram's success on the field, his tenure has seen the building of the exquisiteCurb Event Center. The complex houses anew 5,000-seat arena for basketball and volleyball, locker rooms for allsports, a training facility and weight room, as well as administrative officesfor the Athletic Department. Off the field, the athletic department has madeacademic achievement the cornerstone of its definition of success.

Belmont is the only school to win the trophy five straight times (2002-2006). Also of significance, Belmont has earned distinction from the NCAA ineach of their Academic Progress Rate (APR) reports. Strickland brings variedyears of experience to the program, including nine years as athletics direc-tor at Murray State University prior to coming to Belmont. While at MurrayState, Strickland served on numerous Ohio Valley Conference committees aswell as serving on the NCAA IAA football advisory committee and the NCAArifle committee.
