    By Mike Welsch

Solving the handicapping riddle that is the elite

Gulfstream Park winter meeting will become even

more challenging when the 2011-2012 session opens

on Dec. 3, a month earlier than usual.

The early portion of the meet is always the most

difficult part to decipher, and now the dynamic will

be changed. There is also a new wrinkle to consider

this year figuring out how to approach dirt races

carded at a mile and one sixteenth, something Gulf-

stream horseplayers havent had to deal with since

    2004.

With those facts in mind, here are some handi-

capping angles and idiosyncrasies to consider whencracking the Daily Racing Form open to the Gulf-

stream past performances for the first time in more

    than seven months.

    SHIPPERS

Gulfstream annually offers the largest melting pot

of horses and horsemen of any meet in the country,

placing the burden of comparing all these apples

and oranges squarely on the shoulders of handicap-

pers until local form sorts itself out four to five weeks

into the season. But many of the northern invaders

are not expected to settle into their winter homes

until opening day, if not later. So it is likely that

Calder-based runners will dominate the entries and

winners circle, at least through the end of December.

Such was the case even with the traditional early

January opening last winter. Kentucky and New

York invaders ultimately held the upper hand once

the meet got into full gear, but horses who made

their previous starts at Calder won 45 races during

the opening month of the 2011 meet. Those coming

out of Kentucky won just 31 times (25 from Churchill

Downs, 6 from Keeneland); from New York, 28; the

Mid-Atlantic region (Laurel, Parx, and Delaware)

16; Monmouth 14; Woodbine, 8; and Chicago, 3. Theearlier opening will undoubtedly push these numbers

further in Calders favor this winter.

    JOCKEYS

You wont find a more star-studded jockey colony

than the one occupying the Gulfstream Park room

each winter or one more unequally weighted toward

    the top.

A total of 123 riders accepted at least one mount in

the 787 races decided during the 2011 meeting. Nine of

those jockeys accounted for 447 winners, or nearly 58 percent

of the races run, despite the fact that the majority of the nine

left town several weeks before the session ended. That group

was led by Paco Lopez, who had a breakout season, defending

his 2010 title with 83 victories. John Velazquez, Javier Castel-

lano, Joe Bravo, Jose Lezcano, Elvis Trujillo, Julien Lepa-

roux, Alex Solis, and Rajiv Maragh rounded out the top nine.

All are expected back this winter.

Handicappers looking to get the most bang for their buck

from local riders might note that of the top nine, Bravo sported

the best ROI (return on investment) here last winter, a prof-

itable $2.22 figure. Lesser known riders who showed a profit

with their mounts in 2011 were Orlando Bocachica ($2.56),

Jeffrey Sanchez ($2.22) and Javier Santiago ($2.02). Leparoux

was the least productive of the leading nine, from a horseplay-

ers standpoint, with an ROI in 2011 of a mere $1.22.

The top jockey-trainer combinations last winter were

    Velazquez-Todd Pletcher (36), Lopez-Nick Canani (27), Castel-

    lano-Chad Brown (13) and Bocachica-Marcus Vitale (10).

From the standpoint of wagering value, however, keep an eye

on the following combos from 2011. Lezcano- Steve DiMauro (3

    for 4, ROI $10.55 in 2011); Manny Cruz-Steve Towne (4 for 4, ROI

$15.05); Jose Alvarez- Peter Gulyas (4 for 11, ROI $9.49); Solis-

    Lisa Lewis (8 for 26, ROI $4.55); and Trujil lo-Eddie Plesa Jr. (6for 26, ROI $4.21).

    TRAINERS

Nearly every prominent trainer on the East Coast, plus a

large percentage of leading barns from the Midwest, will be on

hand once again this winter, including the top 17 trainers in

wins from the 2011 meet. The stellar bunch is led by Pletcher,

who has accounted for the last eight Gulfstream training

    titles.

There is no secret to Pletchers success and, as a result, his

horses tend to be overbet, especially those ridden by his go-to

jockey, Velazquez. Despite his popularity with the bettin

public, Pletcher was still able to maintain a near profitabl

$1.89 ROI for the 2011 meet. Among the top 17 trainers in wins

Christophe Clement finished with the best ROI, $2.61, followe

by Vitale ($2.49), Plesa ( $2.22), Wesley Ward ($2.03), and Nick

    Canani ($2.02).

Graham Motion had as productive a year as any trainer in

the country in 2011, but he was relatively quiet last winter a

Gulfstream. He started only 43 horses, including Kentucky

Derby winner Animal Kingdom, who lost his only loca

appearance. Yet Motion was still a bettors best friend during

the meet, posting a profitable $3.03 ROI for his nine winners.

Trainers who may have operated under the radar las

winter, but whose barns turned significant profits for thei

followers, included Lewis ($3.94 ROI), Gulyas ($3.92), Jamie

Ness ($3.57), Joe Orseno ($3.22) and Edwin Broome (2.84).

    THE CHALK

On average, favorites tend to win at about the same rate a

Gulfstream as anywhere else in the country. The percentag

of winning favorites over the last four years remained consis

tent: 33 percent in 2008, 34 in 2009, 35 in 2010 and 33 in 2011.But there are spots where chalk players should step in and

    others to avoid.

The highest percentage of winning favorites in 2011 came

in seven furlong and mile-and-one-eighth dirt races, a whop

    ping 51 percent (18 of 35) and 50 percent (15 of 30), respectively

Sprint races ranging from 5 1/2 to 6 furlongs and mile races

out of the chute produced a slightly below average 30 percen

    winning favorites.

Turf was a different story. The longer the races, the less

form held up. Favorites won 39 percent of the five-furlong

grass events in 2011, 47 percent at 7 1/2 furlongs, and 34 percen

    Christophe Clement had

    the highest return on

    investment ($2.61) among

    the top 17 trainers at

    Gulfstream meet last winter.

at a mile but just 23 percent at a mile and one-sixteenth, 27

percent at a mile and one-eighth and 25 percent at a mile and

    three-sixteenths and beyond.

    POST POSITION

There are several distances at which the post position

draw is critical at Gulfstream, and the newly carded mile

and one-sixteenth races over the main course figure to top

    that list in 2011-2012.

The post position bias in one-mile-and-one-eighth dirt

races at Gulfstream has been staggering and figures to be

even more so at a mile and one-sixteenth, with those races

to begin approximately 100 feet past the regular finish line

and to conclude approximately the same distance beyond the

sixteenth pole. Mile-and-one-eighth races produced just a

single winner from the 37 starters who broke from post posi-

tions 8-12 a year ago. Nearly 50 percent of those races, 14 of 30,

were won by horses breaking from posts 1-3.

The stats from mile-and-one-eighth dirt races were even

more startling in 2008 and 2009, when post positions 8-12

produced only 2 winners from 105 starters, one of them Big

Browns victory from post 12 in the 2008 Florida Derby. With

an even shorter run to the first turn and a shorter stretch,

look for inside posts and speed to dominate even more at a

mile and one sixteenth this winter.

The same bias applied to races run at 7 1/2 furlongs on the

turf last year, where posts 1-5 accounted for 15 of 19 winners,

and horses breaking from posts 6-12 were a combined 4 of

    109.

    TRACK BIAS

The old Gulfstream Park was famed as a speed-biased

highway. That has not been the case since the main track was

rebuilt and reconfigured to a mile and one eighth circumfer-

ence in 2005, but biases still exist. Horseplayers should have

a discerning eye when watching where the winners (and

losers) are coming from on a daily basis.

If the 2011 meet is any guide, speed horses could actually

be at a disadvantage early in the session. Last winter, the

rail was dead and speed took a beating over the main trackduring seven of the meets first nine cards, although, as the

winter progressed, there were many afternoons that saw

front runners dominate on the dirt.

    MAIDEN RACES/WORKOUTS

Three-year-old maiden races, especially during the early

stages of the Gulf meet, always bear scrutiny. One never

knows when the next Kentucky Derby prospect migh

appear. But for horseplayers, trying to sort out a full field

consisting primarily of first-time starters can be a headache

Workout times for debuting youngsters will vary depend

ing upon where they are stabled. Horses training at Gulf-

stream tend to work a bit faster than their peers at the Palm

Meadows training track. Horses coming off the deeper

Payson Park training center and Calder Race Course

surfaces regularly have slower workout times.

Gate workouts at Gulfstream are atypically fast, due in

large part to the fact that horses have a three-eighths of a

mile straight run before entering the turn. If the wind is ou

of the south, or at a gate workers back, watches have been

known to be broken. Bettors who back the animals who

produced those oftimes misleading sub-47-second half-mile

gate drills do so at their own risk.

Although Calder horses are typically outclassed in 3-year

old maiden special weight races, they do win more than their

share of maiden claimers. Any horse capable of breezing in

49 seconds and change or faster from the gate, or shading 1:02

from the pole in the morning at Calder bears watching when

racing in the afternoon at Gulfstream.
