The mission of Endicott College is to instill in students an understanding of and an appreciation for professional and liberal studies. Deeply woven within this philosophy is the concept of applied learning, which has been the hallmark of Endicott. Linking classroom and off-campus work experience through required internships remains the most distinguishing feature of the College.

Endicott has a vision for the total development of the individual within a community that fosters an appreciation of diversity, international awareness, community service, and moral and ethical values. Endicott is an innovative and vibrant, student-centered institution that supports undergraduate and graduate students in their pursuit of knowledge.

Common threads run through the fabric of the Endicott experience: increased self-confidence, stronger professional skills and technological competencies, and perhaps the most valued of all, lives open to change.

Endicott provides a very unique and special opportunity for student-athletes who are looking to participate at the collegiate level. I was attracted to Endicott’s welcoming community and supportive environment; there is a strong emphasis on hard work. Everyone is involved. Teams cheer one another on, showcasing their loyalty to Endicott athletics. I chose DIII for two reasons: I wanted to attend a college where I could focus on my academics and reach out to my professors easily and secondly, I wanted to develop by learning on and off the field in a focused environment surrounded by others shared the same goals. – Ryan D’Amico

Attending Endicott was an easy choice for me. The school offers top-quality academics and an established intern-ship program to help students prepare for “real-world” professional situations. Endicott’s fantastic location and beautiful campus also played a major role in my decision. The athletic programs have a great history of success and value high-level competition, two important features that I wanted to be a part of. – Alex Elia

Being a student-athlete is important to me. Endicott provided an opportunity to not only continue playing the sport I am passionate about, but to also excel in the classroom while working towards a degree in finance. I believe what makes Endicott stand out, in additon to other DIII programs, is that student-athletes compete without receiving an athletic scholarships. Every athlete plays, practices, and trains because they are passionate about their sport. – Alex Jorge

Coming into his second season as head coach of Endicott in 2012, Coach Calabrese is looking to build upon a 2011 sea-

son that saw the team finish 8-9-3, their best record since 2005. Last season also saw them advance to the CCC Quarterfinals for the second straight season, as well as being selected to the ECAC Tournament for the first time in the history of the program. The 4-3-2 record in conference play also marked the first season above .500 since 2006.

“Ultimately the goal for our program is to compete for the regular and postseason conference championship,” states Cala-brese. “We have had some relative success the past two seasons with making the playoffs, but we want to take the next step to become a legitimate contender in our conference. We have to be mature enough to perform at our top ability each and every time we step foot on the field and need to embrace this mental-ity. We have stepped up our out of conference schedule which should help prepare us for tough battles in conference, espe-cially with the first match on the schedule being St. Lawrence who received a NSCAA preseason national ranking of #2 in the country. The team is working hard to get to the next level and with the influx of new players we have coming in, the expecta-tions are high for this group.”

Last season Endicott was eliminated by Roger Williams who lost to conference champion Western New England, and in 2010,

the team suffered a 2-0 loss to conference champion Nichols. Following the 2-1 loss to Roger Williams, the Gulls moved onto the ECAC tournament last season, where they fell 3-2 to Alber-tus Magnus.

In the upcoming 2012 season, Endicott is returning two of its top three scorers in sophomore forward Alex Jorge, junior mid-fielder Bobby Durben. Defensively the team will look to senior Michael MacLeay, who was one of two players to start in all 20 matches last season, as well as senior defenseman Kevin Gnec-co. The two will look to provide leadership to a young backfield.

This past year, Jorge led the program with five goals and one assist, good enough for 11 points, following a positional switch to forward after starting the season in net. Durben was close be-hind with nine total points after tallying three goals and notching three assists. Ryan D’Amico provides consistency amongst a tal-ented midfielder group after notching 17 starts and accounting for four points after scoring one goal and recording two assists.

The 2012 season will also see a very talented incoming class that will be a mix of transfers and first year students. Nathan Trigg (Bryant University, Oakwood Soccer Academy) is expected to make an immediate impact from the midfield position. Zack Mullane (American International College, Western United FC) will also look to make an impact from a defensive midfielder position. Kyle Bisceglia (Goffstown, NH, Seacoast Academy),

Jordan Daniel (FSA Soccer Club), Mark Greco (Belchertown, Western United FC), Alex Tonsberg (Staples, Beachside Soccer Club), and Henry McCauley (Westtown School, FC Delco) all look to contribute during their freshmen campaigns.

This season, Endicott will face a strong schedule both in and out of conference. Matches against national #2 St. Lawrence, Salem State, Tufts and Springfield, highlight an extremely strong out of conference schedule. In conference, key matches see the Gulls hosting Roger Wil-liams on September 15th, while having to travel to Gordon, Western New England and Nichols during a key two week stretch in early October. With the preparation gained from a strong schedule and a mixture of maturing players and new youth, Calabrese and the Gulls have their sights set on the ultimate prize of a conference championship and a berth to the NCAA tournament.

In his second year at the helm of the Endicott men’s soccer program, Head Coach Joe Calabrese believes his philosophy on

not just soccer, but life, is starting to rub off on his players.

“Don’t make excuses and balance your life,” says Calabrese. “It’s as simple as that. If I have a player who is struggling aca-demically, and I ask him how much time or effort he’s put into his class work, I expect an open and honest answer so we can determine a course of action to get him back on track.”

The balance, Calabrese says, encompasses not just soccer, but spiritual beliefs, family, academics, community service and good relationships. “We hold our guys accountable for everything, whether it’s their studies or their play on the field. I want them to see the big picture of their college experience because if they do, it will be that much better.”

The soccer experience at Endicott is competitive, especially considering the parity in Commonwealth Coast Conference

opponents year-in and year-out. Calabrese brings that competi-tive environment from game day into his practices, which run from intense 90 minute sessions to pregame walkthroughs, hoping to prepare his team for a late post-season run.

“At practice, we’ll track wins and losses, and at the end of the session, a champion will emerge. We hold 2 v 2, 4 v 4, or 8 v 8 championship formatted tournaments throughout the fall season, which we believe creates a competitive practice environment preparing our squad for a deep run into the CCC playoffs.”

Offseason training is imperative for the success of the program. Players aren’t required to be in the weight room 3-to-4 days a week, but the returners have shown that they want to put the work in if they want to be a force not only in the region but at the national level as well. Calabrese also emphasizes the need to work on technical skills throughout the year to improve the simple parts of the game that will seem natural come game day.

Calabrese also focuses on team chemistry in the off-season through community service and some creative programming.

“Last December, the entire team participated in the Polar Plunge that benefited the River House homeless shelter in Beverly. The team also instituted ‘Forced Family Fun’ which was an idea created by multiple time NCAA champions Messiah College where we scheduled time together each month in the spring. We’ll hold team meals at my house, outings to the movie theatre or laser tag which, in turn, has and will create a stronger sense of family in our team.”

When it comes to future players, Calabrese admits that he is just looking for recruits that can pass the “good-dude test.”

“Are you willing to make the daily sacrifices to achieve success? Are you willing to give back to the community? Are you going to get the job done in the classroom? Are you willing to put the work in on the field? That’s going to be the standard for our program every single year.”
