Chad Hardin is entering his first season as the head coach of the Marian Uni-versity men’s soccer team. He spent the last four years as an assistant with the Knights’ women’s program after spending a year teaching in Dayton, Ohio.

During his time as an assistant at Marian University, the team endured a con-sistent upswing with a record of 45-8-4 since 2007. The team won two confer-ence titles with Hardin as an assistant helped guide the Knights to a 14-1-1 record in MCC play over the last two seasons.

Hardin brings more than 25 years of playing experience and eight years of coaching experience to Marian University. He has had a variety of coaching ex-periences and is a highly motivated recruiter. He served as the varsity assistant coach at Plainfield High School from 2000-05 and coached Westside United

and Fury FC soccer clubs in Indianapolis.Hardin earned a bachelor of science degree from Indiana University in 2000 where he was a member of

the club soccer team. He also earned a bachelor of science degree from Marian University in 2003.Hardin is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and resides in Indianapolis.

previewing tHe teaMComing off a forgettable season in 2009, there is a

new look to the Marian University men’s soccer pro-gram and a new attitude. The Knights finished the 2009 campaign with aa 3-14-1 overall record and a 2-6 mark in Mid-Central College Conference play. The Knights will look to first-year head coach Chad Hardin, who previously served as the assistant coach for the women’s program, to lead the Knights to a successful 2010 season.

Coach Hardin has 17 returning from last season and has added 11 to the roster for 2010. The roster is comprised of six seniors, five juniors, 10 sopho-mores, and seven freshmen.

“I expect the senior group to provide strong leader-ship,” said Hardin. “They have been around collegiate soccer for four years and they know what it takes to win at this level.”

Leading the way for the Knights is senior tri-cap-tain Don Oldham. Oldham was an All-Conference first team pick last season and started 16 games for the Knights. He anchors the back line and coach Hardin expects Oldham to be a leader on the field and off.

“Don is the heart and soul at center back for us,” said Hardin. “He’s what holds this team together and is a very quick and smart player. Don has played through a back injury that would keep most players out, but his leadership and determination is why the team voted him as one of our captains.”

Also leading the way for the Knights is senior tri-cap-tain Troy Lock. Lock registered 10 shots in 14 starts last season, but coach Hardin is expecting much more after significant off-season improvement.

“Troy has worked hard on his game this off-sea-son,” said Hardin. “He has improved tremendously and he is being a vocal leader, which I want.”

Fifth-year senior Michael Foerster is one of four returning goal-scorers from last season, and is a six-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete. Coach Hardin expects Foerster to lead by example as the quintessential student-athlete.

Junior James Dulhanty returns to the Knights after a solid season in between the pipes. Dulhanty was also honored as an All-Conference second team pick after setting the school-record in saves with 131 last season.

Dulhanty had four double-digit save games for the Knights, which included three games against ranked opponents. Coach Hardin said he is “confident with James between the pipes. He is a solid keeper who will make big saves and keep us organized in the back.”

Junior Tyler Kitchen is the team’s leading returning

goal scorer from 2009. Kitchen scored two goals and added an assist, which was good enough to lead the Knights in points.

According to Hardin, “Kitchen is a talented mid-fielder with a deadly left foot who will control the midfield this year. He is one of our most technically sound players on the field.”

Junior Chase Brackin, coming off a series of injuries, is back to form and coach Hardin expects a significant contribution from the Warren Central product.

“If Chase can stay on the pitch and healthy, he is an impact player,” said Hardin. “Chase is physically gifted, and, if he can stay healthy, will be a great as-set in 2010.”

Sophomore Grant Brackin, Chase’s younger broth-er, returns for his sophomore season. Brackin is an intelligent player who can play virtually anywhere on the field. Coach Hardin is looking for big things from Brackin this season.

Returning to solidify the back line is sophomore Brad Yust. Yust logged the second-most minutes as a freshman last season with 945 minutes. He is a force in the air and will be a target player on set pieces.

New to the Knights’ lineup is sophomore Dan Ter-rell. Terrell is a transfer from Northern Kentucky University, one of the top NCAA Division II teams in the country, and his experience and versatility makes Coach Hardin excited to see him on the field in 2010.

Freshmen Blake Horvath and Renaud Sicard are expected to be anchors for the freshman class. Hor-vath, a back from Michigan, brings a solid combina-tion of size and skill to the back line. He was a part of the national championship-winning Vardar Academy club program in the summer of 2010. Coach Hardin is expecting Horvath to make an immediate impact this season.

Sicard, a Paris, France native, brings an inter-national flair to the Knights’ program. Sicard, who transferred from St. Petersburg College in Florida, is a left-footed wing midfielder who has the necessary tools to compete in the MCC.

Freshman Caleb Kolby is another addition that Coach Hardin hopes will spark the Knights’ offense and improve scoring. While small in stature, Kolby has the heart needed to compete for the Knights.

“I am excited to start the season with the team,” said Hardin. “The guys had a very good winter and a very successful spring season. They have been work-ing hard to improve their games and hopefully it will pay off for us this season.”

2010–11 season previewscHedule preview

The Knights will open the season with its annual alumni match on August 21 and remain at home for the first two matches of the regular season. The Knights host Robert Morris University on August 25 before taking on Benedictine University on August 29.

“These two opponents will be a good test for our guys to start the season,” said Hardin. “The guys are looking to avenge the controversial defeat last sea-son to Robert Morris. These first two games will set the tone for the rest of our season.”

Marian University hits the road to compete in the University of Saint Francis (IN) Classic where it will face Davenport University and Cornerstone Univer-sity on Labor Day Weekend. The team will stay on the road with matches at Georgetown College (KY) on September 7 before heading to Holy Cross Col-lege (IN) on September 11.

“We will see what resolve we have when we hit the road,” said Hardin. “With a young team, it will be a difficult stretch. However, learning to play on the road will help this team as we head into the confer-ence season.”

The Knights will return to St.Vincent Health Field to host Hanover College on September 14 before head-ing to Lincoln, Illinois for a showdown with Lincoln Christian College on September 18.

“These last few non-conference games will show how we have progressed as we prepare for confer-ence play,” Hardin said.

MU opens Mid-Central College Conference play with three straight matches at the friendly confines of St.Vincent Health Field. The Knights will open with Indiana Wesleyan University on September 21 before Spring Arbor University comes to town on September 25. Taylor University will travel to Indianapolis on September 29 before MU steps out of conference to take on Urbana University on October 1. MCC foe Grace College rounds out the five-match home stand on October 5 at St.Vincent Health Field.

“It will be nice to open conference at home with a series of games,” said Hardin. “With three of the top five teams in the MCC coming to our place, we hope the fans will turn out to give us a home-field advan-tage. It will be a tough stretch.”

The Knights head back on the road to take on the always-tough Goshen College on October 9 before heading to Fort Wayne, Indiana to take on the Uni-versity of Saint Francis (IN) on October 13.

The five seniors will be honored on October 18 when Cincinnati Christian University comes to

St.Vincent Health Field for the final regular season home match on October 18.

The final two contests of 2010 are on the road at Huntington University on October 20 and at 18th-ranked Bethel College on October 23. The MCC Tour-nament starts on October 30 and the Knights are looking to clinch a place in the top eight.

“The MCC is one of the toughest conferences in the nation,” said Hardin. “We hope to improve on our fin-ish in the standings from last season and get back in to the MCC Tournament.”
