2009 at a glanceWith a final record of 9-7-3, the UT Dallas men’s soccer team engineered the school’s 12th consecutive winning season since joining the American Southwest Conference in 1998. But for the first time in the program’s history, the Comets, who won the ASC Championship in 2007, were unable to secure a bid to the league’s postseason tournament, finishing with a ninth-place conference mark of 6-6-1.

“We’ve always managed to find a way to get in,” said UTD coach Jack Peel. “The sad part was, this was one of the better teams I’ve had in a while.”

Despite starting the 2009 season with a 5-1-2 record, injuries constantly riddled a UTD squad that dropped four of its final six games—and failed to find the back of the net in three straight losses from Oct. 23-29. Forward Jess Mitchell, the Com-ets’ second-leading scorer in 2008, suffered a season-ending leg injury early in the season, while midfielder Mazi Rabiee was recurrently sidelined throughout October.

Senior forwards Cory Roth and Stephen Ambrose shouldered most of the offense’s workload, scoring eight and seven goals, respectively, to lead UTD. But the team totaled just 31 goals in 2009, much less than the 46 strikes it compiled a year ago.

The Comets’ lapse in productivity can be traced to the loss of top scorer Kevin White, says Peel. White, UTD’s all-time leading scorer (44 points), notched 17 goals last season and left a huge offensive void when he graduated in May.

“We knew going into this year that we had lost (White), and that someone else had to pick it up,” said Peel. “We had our chances and opportunities. We’ve got to find some more goal-scorers.”

UTD capped the 2009 season with an emphatic 3-0 win over Concordia, a fitting send-off for Roth and Ambrose, who combined to net all three Comet goals in their last collegiate game. It also served as the final shutout win for Jake Brandon, UTD’s all-time winningest goalkeeper. Brandon ended his ca reer with 17 shutout victories and 269 saves—the most in school history.

The Comets will also lose midfielder Jarrod Payne, a staple in UTD’s lineup the past three seasons, this coming offseason. Payne was named to the ASC All-Conference Second Team in 2009, while Ambrose earned First Team honors for scoring seven goals and dishing out three assists. Billie Dixon, a junior defender, joined Payne as Second Team selection.

Dixon will headline a defense that returns all of its starters in 2010. An experienced back line, coupled with more than a dozen Comets who saw significant playing time this season, should bode well as UTD seeks to retool over the offseason and prepare for a return to the ASC Tournament.

“Defense was our main strength this year, and I think we’re going to have a pretty good team next year,” said Peel. “We’ll pick up some talent here and there, and some of these young guys have a year of experi ence behind them already.”

out of reach The 2009 men’s soccer team concocted a winning record, but narrowly missed out on an ASC Tournament bid. It was the first time in program history that UTD did not qualify for the league playoffs.

2010 PREVIEWLeague prognosticators have plotted a playoff-bound course for the UT Dallas men’s soccer team in 2010, helping to erase the memory of last fall’s program-worst finish in which the Comets missed out on the American Southwest Conference for the first time — ever.

But not yet has the 2009 season been annulled in the mind of head coach Jack Peel. Entering his 13th season at UTD, Peel is convinced that despite losing leading scorers Stephen Ambrose and Cory Roth to graduation, the Comets will regroup to muster a year to remember, and a year to forget the last.

“I haven’t forgotten about it,” said Peel about the 2009 season. “I’ve got to get that monkey off my back and the team’s back. We won’t allow that to happen again.”

With seven returning seniors — and one senior transfer in goalkeeper Bailey Williams — the Comets have a core group of expe-rienced leaders to pave the way for a slew of newcomers. Billie Dixon, Jorge Morales, Patrick Hing, Anthony Stryk, Mazi Rabiee, Justin Bailey and forward Michael Anyirah are the seven, and each served as starters in 2009. Of those seniors, however, only Anyirah, Stryk, Rabiee and Bailey found the back of the net last season, combining for eight goals. The Comets ranked sixth in the ASC in 2009 with 31 goals, though the team’s scoring struggles did not go undocumented: they were shutout in seven contests, including three straight down the stretch.

“(Scoring) was a big problem for our team last year,” said Peel. “Not making the (ASC) Tournament stemmed from a lack of goal-scoring, period.”

Anyirah and Rabiee, when healthy, are proven offensive threats, especially with Rabiee working from the midfield. This year, they will receive help in the form of two atypical forwards — freshman Michael Darrow and transfer Ryan Courson from Northeastern State (OK). Both, unlike Roth and Ambrose, are tall strikers who play with tactfulness and physicality.

“They’ve been scoring goals like crazy in practice,” said Peel of Darrow and Courson. “The two of them are playing in practice like they’ve been playing forever. They’re big-target guys who are going to add a dimension to our offense that we haven’t had in a while.”

Defensively, Williams, a transfer from rival UT-Tyler, has been tabbed the starter in net. He compiled 22 saves in seven appear-ances, including two starts, in goal for the Patriots in 2009. Williams replaces former all-conference goalkeeper Jake Brandon, who holds countless school records. UTD’s back line will be ratcheted by Morales, sophomore Brian Bienhoff and Dixon, who may also log minutes in the midfield. All three defenders were All-ASC selections a year ago, and may be joined by Eric Holland in the back-field. On paper, the Comets’ fusion of experience and youth is a recipe for success. But, according to Peel, improvement will not simply hinge on the performance of his players—moreover, it will be the result of a new paradigm that has deemed the program anew.

“Compared to last year’s team, there just seems to be a better attitude,” said Peel. “We changed our focus last spring. We tried to change everything we do. We don’t have Kevin Whites or Ali Morshedis or Trent Abbotts. But at the same time, we’ve got a good group of hardworking kids who, I think, will pull it together this year.”

UTD will open its 2010 schedule on Sept. 1, when the Comets host NAIA Texas Wesleyan in Richardson. They will face two peren-nial powerhouses in Southwestern (TX) and No. 16 Trinity (TX) the week of Sept. 6, shortly before the conference season begins. UTD’s opens the ASC schedule on Sept. 16 when it plays host to Mississippi College.

Jack Peel has been a fixture in the Dallas-Fort Worth soccer community for more than 25 years, and has provided oversight of the highly successful UT Dallas program since it took shape in 1998. In 12 seasons, his teams have yet to experience a losing season, and, en route to compiling a staggering 156-63-17 record, he has earned four American Southwest Conference Coach of the Year awards (1998, 1999, 2002, 2004).

Since the Comets became eligible to compete for the ASC championship in 2002, Peel’s teams qualified for the postseason seven straight years (2002-08), advanced to the conference championship game four times and captured ASC titles in 2004 and 2007. His teams hold an 110-25-11 record against ASC competition.

Prior to joining the UTD staff, Peel coached over 10 years in the Carrollton (TX) ISD -- first at R.L. Turner High School (1979-84), then at Newman Smith High School (1992-96). He was also an assistant women’s soccer coach at Baylor University (1996-98), where his teams recorded a 31-9-2 mark and were the top-ranked new program in the country.

A native of Garland, TX, Peel played both tennis and soccer in high school before earning his BS de-gree from Midwest-ern State University in Wichita Falls, TX (1977) and an MS in Physical Education in 1981. He holds a USSF “A” License and NSCAA Premier Diploma.

RICHARDSON, TX (04.12.10) — The American Southwest Conference announced on Monday, April 12, 2010, that Centenary College, once an NCAA Division I member of the Summit League, will become the ASC’s 16th member in 2011-12. Located in Shreveport, LA, Centenary is pro-jected to participate in 13 varsity sports in the ASC.

At the crux of the recently rennovated UTD Soccer Complex is the main playing field, located at the southernmost end of campus. Equipped with lights, donated by Lake High-lands Soccer Club, the field has served as the host site for two ASC Championship Tourna-ments and is also utilized by local club soc-cer teams. In fact, FC Dallas, a professional soccer team based in Frisco, TX, once used the field as a practice facility. In 2009, a state-of-the-art Daktronics scoreboard was affixed near the south goal.

Like the primary soccer field, the UTD Softball Field has been subject to the department’s outdoor refurbishment projects. It was also equipped with a Daktronics scoreboard in 2009, when the lining of its new outfield fenc-ing reached completion. The field is bordered by two seating areas located along the first- and third-base lines. Batting cages are found just east of the home dugout. The field, in recent days, has been made media-friendly.

The UTD Baseball Field is home to the Com-ets’ perennially successful baseball squad, which has compiled a sterling record of 75-26 at the facility since the start of the 2006 sea-son. The field hosted the 2007 ASC Baseball Championships, and is used by local club and recreational league teams on a yearlong basis. In the latter part of the 2000s, extra seating was added, along with several media plat-forms. It also was the recipient of Daktronics scoreboard technology in 2009.

Found on the east side of campus, the UTD Tennis Courts are nestled between the Eugene McDermott Library and the School of Man-agement. UTD’s men’s and women’s tennis squads host home matches on these courts, though, in the event that inclement weather moves in, the teams are able to play indoors at nearby Canyon Creek Country Club. The courts are popular among on-campus resi-dents, faculty and staff, and intramural sports leagues.

Inside the UTD Activity Center is a 3,200-seat gymnasium, home to the school’s men’s and women’s basketball teams and nationally ranked volleyball team. It was the site of an NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Regional Final in 2010, and throughout the past three years has hosted three separate ASC Champi-onship Tournaments. The Activity Center also houses the athletic department offices, training facilities, an auxiliary gym, racquetball and squash courts, a 25-yard pool and the school’s rec sports department. It was built in 1999.

The Canyon Creek Country Club has gracious-ly fostered the growth of various UTD athletic programs, including the golf and tennis teams. Every fall, it hosts the Lady Comet Classic and the athletic department’s annual Comet Club Golf Tournament, a fundraising event. Located on Custer Parkway in Richardson, it allows the men’s and women’s golf teams year-round access for practices and other team events. In the event of inclement weather, the club welcomes UTD’s tennis teams to engage in ASC matches indoors.

Located approximately 10 miles north of downtown Dallas, UTD’s sprawling campus, found within the city limits of Richardson, TX, offers a multitude of op-portunities for visiting fans and families — but especially for students seeking to study at a top-notch, world-class research university. The campus was originally a small, Texas Instruments-funded facility known as the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest, established in 1961. Since then, the University of Texas at Dallas has expanded tenfold. Now, UTD enrolls nearly 15,000 students on a 500-acre campus solely dedicated to fostering academic greatness.
