Southern Utah puts on a number of clinics throughout the summer and fall. SUU also hosts the Bas-ketball Bash each year to introduce the mens and womens basketball teams to the the Thunder-bird fans and Cedar City community. The past two events have been sponsored by Maggie Moos Ice Cream and the coaching staffs have given out free ice cream to fans who later got a chance to see the two SUU basketball teams compete in a series of events, including a tug-of-war with the ThunderKids.

Southern Utah Universitys athletic program will have a new home, begin-ning in the fall of 2012, as the Thunderbirds have accepted an invitation to join the Big Sky Conference. SUU received and accepted a formal invitation to join the conference on Nov. 1, 2010.

Southern Utah will reap many benefits as members of the Big Sky, including reduced travel costs, ease of scheduling and, at least in the case of football, the opportunity to play for an automatic post-season bid. Last, but certainly not least, SUUs programs will be able to build on natural regional rivalries within the conference rather than with institutions with no geographic ties to Utah.

The Thunderbirds currently compete in The Summit League in the majority of their sports, with the closest conference opponent located in Tulsa, Okla. With the exception of North Dakota, every school in the Big Sky will be closer geographically to SUU than the nearest Summit League institution.

    2010-11season PrevIeW

The Southern Utah University womens basketball team welcomes in eight freshmen but re-turns four starters including three very experienced seniors who will be looking to make a mark in the Summit League this season. We are really looking forward to this season getting underway and seeing our three outstanding seniors lead a very talented group of freshmen and sophomores, stated second year head coach JR Payne. Our seniors have developed into great leaders and have really brought our young group along by continuing to set the bar higher and higher. A change in NCAA legislation that went into effect this season, has allowed all womens basketball programs to start practicing 40 days before their first game. This new rule has provided a great opportunity for Payne and her staff to work with the eight freshmen. We are really excited about this new rule that has allowed us to get out and get our freshmen on to the floor earlier than usual, added Payne. Our newcomers will now get an extra week or so to experience a collegiate practice schedule and that will help with the learning pro-cess. A veteran player who will once again be looked upon to lead the way after producing one of the most impressive seasons in school-history last year will be senior Challis Pascucci. The forward out of Goodyear, Ariz. earned All-Summit League second team accolades after leading the Thunderbirds in scoring, and also pacing the conference in double-doubles, rebounding and tying for the lead in blocks. Prior to this season, Pascucci was named to the Summit Leagues preseason all-conference second team. Challis has been and will once again be our anchor on the both ends of the floor this season, stated Payne of her senior leader need-ing 188 points to become the eighth member of SUUs 1,000-point club. Challis is a long, athletic post player who finds ways to get a basket when we need it most. She has developed into a great leader and was very committed to improving her game this past off-season and has been a good teacher to the younger players. A pair of sophomores in Chanel Thorley and Tayler Anderson also return to join Pascucci in the front court this season. Thorley and Pas-cucci were the only players to start all 30 games last season as Thorley put together an outstanding freshman campaign, finishing second on the team in blocks and rebounding. Chanel has battled through a couple nagging injuries but had very good off-season after producing as a freshmen, commented Payne. She has come back even stronger and will be a tough, physical inside presence for us this year. Anderson appeared in all 30 games last season and will have an opportunity to start and produce as a forward this season after proving she could be successful in both positions last year.

Tayler has done a great job of transitioning to forward, Payne added. She has the height and strength to play down low and the speed to match up with the guards and will really help our transition game this year. Two very talented freshmen in Carli Moreland and Meghan Ringer out of Colorado and California, respectively, will provide the T-Birds with some depth in the low post.

We will look to have Carli and Meghan contribute right away for us, stated Payne. Both players are very skilled with Carli showing that she is great on the boards and pretty far along in her low post skills while Meghan is a very strong freshmen that can shoot from the outside.

Headlining the backcourt is senior guard Caitlyn Sears who returns af-ter finishing second on the team in scoring last year and is another solid season away from joining Pascucci in the 1,000-point club. Caitlyn is a very versatile guard that we will look to be very aggressive and again be one of our primary scorers, commented Payne. Cait has emerged as our leader and has really developed her jump shot into one of the nicest Ive seen. She is our best one-on-one defender and strengthens our transition game because of her athleticism. Sophomore Jadie Parsons returns as the Thunderbirds sharp shooter after leading the team in shooting from behind the arc a season ago. Jadie is our best shooter and will play an important role for us this year, Payne said. She really worked hard in the weight room this past off season, increasing her shooting range which will make her one of our biggest deep threats. Three dynamic and versatile freshmen are Angel Dorn, Dani Wynn and McKinzie Robins who each provide some depth at guard and will have opportunities to contribute in their first collegiate seasons. Angel is a very strong and athletic guard who possesses a very nice shot, commented Payne. She will give our lineup a different look be-cause of her strength and ability to match up with anybody on the floor. Dani owns one the best work ethics on the team and will have a chance to earn some minutes this season because of the energy she brings to the floor. McKinzie also brings a different look to our guards with her athleticism and has shown the ability to shoot very well from the outside. The Thunderbirds own three solid point guards in freshmen Andrea Jones and DJ Norman to go along side senior Kaila Goff who returns after finishing among the conference leaders in assists last year. Jones and Norman come to SUU with impressive resumes after each led their respective teams to state championships last season. Tiny (Goff) has shown tremendous growth on and off the court during the past year and has really taken to one of the leadership roles, Payne said. Andrea and DJ both play at a high level and are proven winners after leading their teams to state titles last year. They both do a great job of making everybody around them better and I look forward to seeing them making positive impacts for us this year and in the coming years.

The schedule will see the Thunderbirds match up against teams out of the Pacific-10, the Mountain West, West Coast and the widely competitive Summit League. Southern Utah will host 15 games in the Centrum Arena highlighted by a six-game home stand that will help usher the young Thunderbird team into the conference season. We are really looking forward to playing the schedule we have put together, Payne said. We have a great blend of teams that compete at a very high level and will provide some good challenges for our young team and prepare us for conference play. The three experienced seniors have meshed well with the young group and that has Payne looking forward to the seeing the new look Thunderbirds play together this season.
