The 2008-09 campaign was highlighted by NCAA finishes for more than half of UAA’s teams, plus conference titles in women’s bas-ketball, gymnastics and men’s cross country. UAA student-athletes also continued a tradi-tion of success in the classroom by earning a combined 3.15 grade point average in calen-dar year 2008. Women's Basketball The Seawolf women made more history, posting the best record (31-4) in school his-tory and advancing to the NCAA Div. II Semifinals for the second year in a row. After tying with Seattle Pacific for the GNAC title, UAA beat the Falcons on their home court to win the West Regional title, then knocked off Clayton State in the Elite Eight round in San Antonio. The Seawolves finished No. 3 in the final WBCA top 25 poll after achieving the first-ever No. 1 ranking in program history earlier in the season. Among their many ac-complishments, the women put together a 22-game winning streak and won the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout for the third year in a row. Senior center Rebecca Kielpin-ski was an All-American and the GNAC Player of the Year for the third time, while senior guard Jackie Thiel was the GNAC co-Newcomer of the Year.

Men's Basketball The Seawolves overcame an 0-5 start to fin-ish with the program’s fourth straight win-ning record at 15-14, while going a solid 9-7 (5th place) in GNAC play. UAA prevailed in several big contests, including a road win over eventual G N A C c h a m p Western Washing-ton, home wins over playoff-bound Seat-tle Pacific and Cen-tral Washington, and a Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout victory against Division I Louisiana Tech. The team got major contributions from its two seniors, as guard Kenny Barker was the only unanimous choice on the All-GNAC squad, and center Jeremiah Trueman was the lone player in NCAA Div. II to rank in the nation’s top 25 in both field-goal and free-throw percentage. Men’s & Women’s Cross Country

Both nationally ranked throughout the year, the UAA men’s and women’s cross country teams had perhaps the best season in either

program’s history. The Seawolves completed the season with the men’s and the women’s squads both qualifying for the NCAAs, with the women finishing 9th and the men 11th. Over the season, the Seawolves came away with top-5 finishes in five of their six meets. The men’s team pro-duced two titles, includ-ing winning the GNAC Championships, and two runner-up finishes. The women recorded two first-place finishes, a second (GNACs) and a third. Sophomore Marko Cheseto, freshman Jake Parisien and senior Elizabeth Chepkosgei earned All-America honors, while UAA racked up six All-West Region accolades and eight All-GNAC placings (of 20 total). Cheseto was the GNAC individual champ and GNAC Cross Country Male Athlete of the Year, and Michael Friess was selected the GNAC Men’s Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his career. Five Seawolves landed on the GNAC All-Academic team.

Gymnastics The Seawolves were golden in their silver anniversary season, capping a midseason turnaround with the program’s first-ever league title when they captured the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation meet, Mar. 20 in Colorado Springs. After scoring no higher than 187.400 through Feb. 2 with an injury-riddled lineup, UAA recovered to break the 190 mark in the final seven meets, stringing together six straight dual victories and finish-ing with a 7-9 record. In their final home

meet, the Seawolves registered a 193.000 against Kentucky for their second-best score in program history. Junior Lauren Agostino (vault) and sophomore Kristy Boswell (bars) won MPSF individual titles, while sopho-more Leah Wilson broke UAA’s season all-around average record (38.415) and became the 10th Seawolf ever to qualify for the Div. I West Regional Championships. Hockey The Seawolf hockey team wrapped up the season with a 14-17-5 overall record and a 9-14-5 slate in Western Collegiate Hockey As-

sociation action, tripling its conference wins and doubling its overall wins from last sea-son. In nonconference play, UAA failed to win its own Kendall Hockey Classic tourna-ment, but came back with the title in the inau-gural Brice Alaska Goal Rush in Fairbanks. Head coach Dave Shyiak’s fourth season was highlighted by the Seawolves’ third consecu-tive Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup title over rival Alaska Fairbanks, plus conference upsets over North Dakota, Colorado College, Denver and Minnesota-Duluth. Men's & Women's Skiing After being predicted to finish 7th in Ski Rac-ing Magazine’s annual preseason NCAA coaches’ poll, UAA completed the year with a record-breaking 4th-place performance at Nationals, producing seven All-Americans. The 2009 season started off with UAA win-ning its first ever invitational — the Seawolf Invite on Jan. 8-11. During the same week, the Seawolves registered their second-best finish, third, in the UAA Invite. The Sea-wolves wound up fourth in the RMISA’s regular-season standings as six UAA skiers received All-Conference recognition. The women’s Alpine team were crowned RMISA champions, with freshman Alex Parker taking

home the Alpine MVP trophy. The Sea-wolves also posted a program-best 13 student-athletes on the 2009 National Ski Coaches Association All-Academic team. Men’s & Women’s Track and Field The 2009 track & field season ended with a record-breaking five All-America honors at the NCAA Championships, 16 new school

records and three new GNAC records. The Seawolves sent a program-best 10 athletes to Nationals, while adding 12 to the GNAC All-Academic team. Head coach Michael Friess and junior David Registe were garnered with their second consecutive Coach-of-the-Year and Male Athlete-of-the-Year honors, respec-tively. Meanwhile, UAA made it a clean sweep of the major men’s league honors as sophomore Marko Cheseto was the GNAC Male Newcomer-of-the-Year and Alfred Kangogo the Male Freshman-of-the-Year With 10 athletes (nine men and one woman) competing at the 2009 NCAA Div. II Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships in San Angelo, Texas, the men’s squad finished in 14th place thanks to All-American finishes by senior David Kipla-gat, Registe, and sophomores Cheseto (two) and Shaun Ward.

Volleyball The Seawolves showed tremendous improve-ment under first-year head coach Chris Green in 2008, tripling their win total from the previ-ous season and earning the program’s first winning record (15-14) since 2003. Picked to finish 9th in the Great Northwest Athletic Con-ference preseason coaches’ poll, the Seawolves wound up in 6th place with a 7-9 mark. After starting the year by winning their own Ex-tended Stay Deluxe Invitational, the Seawolves went on to several big victories, including over then-No. 8 Augustana and league foes North-west Nazarene and Central Washington. Senior outside hitter Rhea Cardwell ranked 4th in Di-vision II in kills per set (4.48) as she became UAA’s first-ever volleyball All-American, while junior setter Calli Scott was named GNAC Newcomer of the Year.

In 1993, the University of Alaska Anchorage hockey program became a full-fledged member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Begun in 1952, the WCHA has established itself as the premier collegiate hockey conference in the country. With the addition of Minnesota State University, Mankato in 1999-2000, the league membership is now at 10 teams.

The WCHA leads the nation in national cham-pions, NCAA Championship winning percentage and NCAA Frozen Four appearances (92).

The WCHA perennially leads the nation in college hockey attendance and has attracted more than one million fans each of the last ten years – becoming the first collegiate hockey conference to do so. This past season, WCHA teams attracted 1,428,028 fans.

On the ice, the WCHA has produced more National Hockey League players (more than 300) and Olympians than any other conference. That list includes the likes of Chris Chelios, Ed Belfour, Tony Esposito, Brett Hull, Mike Richter, Matt Carle, Curtis Joseph, Tomas Vanek, Glenn Ander-son, Jordan Leopold, Jonathan Toews, Zach Parise and UAA’s own Curtis Glencross.

League teams compete in some of the finest arenas in all of college hockey, including Minne-sota’s Mariucci Arena, North Dakota’s Englestad Arena, Wisconsin’s Kohl Center, Colorado Col-lege’s World Arena, Denver’s Magness Arena and UAA’s own Sullivan Arena.

The annual conference playoff championship, now known as the WCHA Final Five, continues to be one of the most successful postseason college tournaments of its kind.

in the academic achievements of our student-athletes. On the average UAA student-athletes have maintained a cumulative grade point average of better than 3.0 in 12 of the past 15 years — well ahead of the norm for all students. Seawolf Corporate Sponsors have had a direct bearing on our academic success, including the donation of laptop computers for student-athletes to use during road trips. Following is snapshot information on our student-athletes’ success in the classroom.

Community Outreach

A DOPT A UNIVERSITY…The depart-ment sponsors an “Adopt a University”

program with Anchorage and Mat-Su Valley public high schools as well as some Anchor-age-area private schools for the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. The pro-gram allows extensive interaction between visiting Shootout teams and local high school students. Students can learn more about their adopted university while offering support through cheerleaders, band, trainers and sports information. The local schools may also get involved with providing supplemen-tal practice sites, as well as the Thanksgiving Dinner program.

S UPPORT FOR NON-PROFITS…Each year UAA Athletics adopts a non-

profit program – generally focusing on health and/or youth issues – to support on a depart-ment-wide basis. In the past, UAA Athletics has supported programs such as Nothing But Nets, Shots for Tots, Alaska Special Olym-pics, Alaska SafeKids, The V Foundation, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Anchorage Center for Families, the Anchorage Immuni-zation Partners Coalition, Children’s Miracle Network, Life Alaska and the Alaska Liter-acy Program.

R EADING WITH THE SEA-WOLVES...For years UAA student-

athletes have been active in the community, especially through reading programs at An-chorage-area elementary schools. That activ-ity has been formalized in a program called Reading With The Seawolves, whereby a cross-section of student-athletes visit differ-ent elementary schools each year to share their favorite children’s books.

A THLETIC SPEAKERS BUREAU…The department’s coaches and adminis-

trators are frequent speakers at youth team banquets and civic organization luncheons, promoting Seawolf athletics in addition to educating the public about key issues in col-lege athletics.

S CHOOL CLINICS…The department’s coaches are frequent speakers at clinics

throughout the state, sharing their expertise with elementary and secondary school coaches seeking to enhance their skills.

W OMEN’S VOLLEYBALL, HOOPS CLINICS…The women’s volleyball

and basketball teams have been active with such activities as post-game clinics and Jun-ior High and Girl Scout Nights at home con-tests.

T ICKET DONATIONS…The department provides tickets and door prizes to ele-

mentary schools for programs that promote academic achievement.

S PORTS CAMPS...Each summer UAA coaches host a variety of youth skills

camps that are both fun and challenging. Among others, these include the popular Kendall Jump Shot basketball camp under the direction of men’s basketball Head Coach Rusty Osborne.

In 2008-09 UAA Athletics sup-ported this non-profit program which has pro-vided literacy instruction to adult learners and their fami-lies for 33 years.

NCAA Rules For Sponsors

Q Who is a “representative of the institu-tion's athletics interests”?

A Any individual who is a member of the institu-tion’s athletics booster club, has made dona-

tions to the booster club or the athletics department, is involved in any manner in recruiting prospects or in providing benefits (e.g., summer jobs) to enrolled student-athletes, or is otherwise involved in promot-ing the institution’s athletics program.

Q Is the institution responsible for the acts of athletics representatives and booster sup-

port groups?

A Yes.

Q What could happen if a sponsor violates an NCAA rule?

A In addition to any sanctions meted out to the University, sponsors or boosters could also

forfeit benefits or privileges if they have engaged in conduct that is determined to be a violation of NCAA legislation.

Q Is it permissible for a sponsor to provide to a student-athlete or friend any benefit or

special arrangement?

A No. The NCAA considers these arrangements as an “extra benefit,” and they are specifically

prohibited. Examples of extra benefits include but are not limited to the following. 1. Special discount payment arrangement, or credit on a purchase (e.g., airline ticket, clothing). 2. Services (e.g., laundry, dry cleaning, tailoring). 3. A loan of money in any amount. 4. A guarantee or bond. 5. The use of an automobile. 6. The purchase of meals or services at commer-cial establishments. 7. Transportation to or from a summer job. 8. A benefit connected with off-campus housing (e.g., individual television sets or stereo equip-ment, specialized recreational facilities, room fur-nishings or appointments of extra quality or quan-tity.). 9. Signing or cosigning a note with an outside agency to arrange a loan. 10. Selling or giving a student-athlete tickets to an athletics, institution or community event. 11. The use of personal properties (e.g., boats, summer homes, cars, stereos) 12. Providing Christmas or birthday gifts. 13. Permitting use of and payment for long dis-tance telephone calls.

The information contained on this page is de-signed to provide a brief summary of NCAA rules and regulations for “representatives of the University of Alaska Anchorage interests,” which include corporate sponsors.

According to the NCAA, the control and conduct of UAA’s intercollegiate athletics program shall in-clude being held accountable for the acts of all indi-viduals that have been identified as “athletic represen-tatives.”

This information should be considered only as a guide to a general understanding of the NCAA rules with a view to avoiding involvement in a violation of NCAA legislation which might result in the loss of an individual’s eligibility or disciplinary action against UAA.

We strongly suggest that if you are not absolutely certain about an NCAA rule, contact the UAA Athletics Department before proceeding.
