Editor's Note
So here we are. Its 7pm on a Sunday night, sitting in a dingy back office trying to put this magazine together, with less than 24 hours before we go to print. A fly sits on my screen, examines my progress, and tries to violate the cursor while I think of something to write. It then buzzes off stubbornly, swiftly dodging my attempt to swat it for the umpteenth time. More misery to add to the fact that we're going nowhere slowly with this operation. I look at Rick and all I see is tired eyes and silent profanities as his laptop makes him grow more and more impatient. After days of gathering information and photographs, writing articles, proof reading, together with the hundreds of calls, SMSes and emails we've been subdued to, we can slowly see the final product becoming a reality. There's still loads to do, but I'm confident that this magazine will exceed some expectations. I'm also confident that it's going to help make the 2009 Blackball Festival a roaring success. Well actually I hope so...
Rick's artwork and design skills are brilliant. It's what makes the difference between a free, crumpled local news handout made from recycled paper, and a professionally designed and printed magazine. His creative ability is on another level, and I'm sure a lot of you will be amazed by what we're trying to do here. Too bad he can barely spell, then he could have done the entire magazine himself. I feel like dropping everything and going to sleep. But I can't do that. You see, Rick and I have this incredible vision about our little operation. We see a precedent being set for all further Blackball Festivals where a professional magazine becomes a must. We see players being so captivated by the content in this magazine that it inspires them to go out there and do their part for the sport. We see sponsors and advertisers starting to take more interest. We see star players soon becoming household names in this country. We see all these events deriving from words and pictures being put together in a glorious and harmonious fashion.
Ok, I'm running out of space now. We just want to say that we hope you enjoy this magazine as much as we enjoyed putting it together. We've got some interesting messages by key figures in the sport, an interview with our World Champ, tournament reviews, blogs, player pictures, and our bookie's preview. Please keep your copy safe if you're lucky enough to receive one. We're printing very few…
On a final note, I want to say thanks to all those who made this magazine possible, namely our advertisers and Rick Schoenlank. Without you, we'd all be reading a crumpled local news handout made from recycled paper. Also a special thanks to iMedia8 for a bulk of the photography. My best wishes to the players as well. Success through Reformation and Transformation . . . . . It is indeed extremely gratifying to write a message on the growth and progress of the sport of blackball in South Africa since its introduction some 5 years ago. This is not only a time for deep reflection but also a time for looking into the possibilities of the future.
In the sports arena, the level at which the sport of blackball-pool is being played currently is unprecedented. The unbelievably high standard of play exhibited by participants both provincially and nationally has assured us numerous continental and international successes. We are currently the All Africa Team, Doubles and Singles Champions and in the international arena, South Africans are the world blackball title holders in no less than 7 categories.
With all these achievements, one would assume that our vision and dream have been realised. Unfortunately, it is not so. The one sector that has not progressed at the same pace as the rest of the sport is that of pool administration. Financial constraints, a lack of manpower and wild promises made to the players are some of the reasons cited. As a result we had inherited an organization with a tarnished image where the morale of the players and administrators was extremely low. Drastic steps had to be taken in 2009 in order to ensure that there was transformation. However, there could be no transformation without reformation. Hence we had to identify key areas in which reformation had to be effected immediately.
Visits to all 9 Provinces by the national leadership to address concerns of membership, establishing an effective communication network and a clearly defined communication policy, implementing a sound economic policy with excellent book-keeping and a tight grip on the purse strings and formulating various policies, such as the player code of conduct, have all contributed to keeping players and administrators happy while at the same time enhancing the image of the organization.
The National Championship of any sporting organization is the flagship event of that organisation and blackball-pool is no different. This prestigious event has to provide an atmosphere that wouldraise the competitive mood of the players. Hence, by negotiating a deal with Carnival City Casino to host the 2009 S.A. Blackball Championships at the “Big Top”, we have succeeded in providing an environment that is conducive to top level play. At this point, I wish to thank the host Province, Gauteng for all their efforts in trying to make the 2009 National Championship a spectacular one indeed.
As far as development is concerned, it is a known fact that the organised structures of blackball-pool do not have the capacity in terms of financial resources or manpower to promote and develop the sport at grassroots level. We are therefore indebted to Carling Black Label for having taken the initiative to perform this important function and for making mass participation in our sport possible through the “Carling Black Label 101 Challenge”.
We need to acknowledge that the success that the sport of blackball-pool is enjoying in this country has been made possible through the assistance and support of certain institutions. On behalf of the National Blackball Federation, I wish to place on record my sincere gratitude and appreciation to:
1 Our anchor sponsor, South African Breweries, under the brand name Carling Black Label, for their involvement, in the sport of blackball-pool and for making this prestigious National Championship possible.
2 Our other sponsor, United Pool Tables for the provision of the pool tables, for the entire duration of all our national tournaments, free of charge.
3 The Promoter, United Productions for the setting up of all our national championships.

One of the major problems faced by our sport, and I think this is prevalent in other sporting codes as well, is the fact that we are making use of volunteers for the execution of various functions within our sport. These volunteers are dedicated individuals who, out of their love for the sport, offer their time and services to the sport without any financial gain whatsoever. This practice, however, places constraints and limitations on the growth and development of the sport, as the availability of volunteers as a resource is very limited indeed. This in turn has a negative impact on the education and sustainable training of the necessary sporting skills. The NBF is currently working towards addressing this problem.
Finally, it is becoming increasingly obvious that pool is the awakening giant in the sporting world and is set to take its place amongst the other traditional sporting codes. If we, both administrators and players, can work together as a single comprehensive unit, we will be able to ensure that the sport of pool takes its rightful place alongside the more recognized sports in South Africa.
In conclusion, I wish to take this opportunity to pay tribute to all those who are no longer with us and applaud and salute them for their contribution towards the success of the sport of blackball-pool.

It is indeed an honour and a privilege to write this thmessage on the occasion of the 5 Anniversary of the
sport of blackball in South Africa. Gauteng is the fastest growing province in this country in terms of blackball membership. Having started with approximately 100 members in 2005, in just 4 years Gauteng has become the largest province in South Africa with well over 500 members. Currently there are 14 clubs, stretching from Boksburg in the east, to Roodepoort in the west, to Pretoria in the north and Alberton in the south, affiliated to the Gauteng Blackball Federation.
In the sports arena, the extremely high level of play has earned us many successes. Our province boasts 5 current World Blackball Champions and an All Africa Champion. I applaud the young men and women of Gauteng who, through their outstanding achievements have put the Gauteng Blackball Federation on the National and International maps.
However, in order to sustain and maintain the interest that has been generated and the successes that our membership is enjoying, there has to be growth. Growth in the form of development and recruitment. Up to this point, we had placed our emphasis on the development of existing members. We have reached this goal. The level at which the sport is being played currently is an indication of this. Our focus should now be to make the sport accessible to as many people aspossible. For this reason we are in the process of embarking on a program of development and recruitment so that blackball-pool becomes a household name in the province of Gauteng.
At a national level, we are indeed very fortunate to have been afforded the opportunity to host the South African Blackball Championships for the next few years. Hosting a Championship of this magnitude is no mean feat. It is only possible through team work, and for this reason I wish to thank the members of my organising committee for their dedication and hard work. South Africa can look forward to a spectacular 2009 National Blackball Championship at Carnival City.
In conclusion, I wish to congratulate the executive and the general membership of the Gauteng Blackball Federation for their dedication and commitment to the sport and for their contribution towards the promotion and upliftment of blackball-pool in our province.

Little did we, as United King of Pool Tables, know when we had started our relationship with the game of pool that we would in fact be a part of a continuous pool history in South Africa. But after approximately 46 National, Continental and World Championships spanning a period of 13 years as the preferred pool table equipment and sponsors in South Africa and Africa inspired by the pool players, we find ourselves at the threshold of the biggest pool event ever played world wide on the 7ft. pool table, namely the awesome “2009 United Black Ball Festival” at Carnival City.
It has been an exciting journey so far for the staff and management of United seeing the sport of pool grow within the recognized structures of the world into a formidable force of people driven by passion for the game they love called ”blackball-pool”, the most accessible sport in the world. We have enjoyed the pleasure of working side by side with sponsors of the likes of Carling Black Label, Simonis and Aramith, whom in turn have built the game of blackball-pool both individually and to the unparalleled envy of many sporting codes in South Africa and indeed worldwide. We also welcome Toyota to our pool family this year.
United is proud to be associated with the National Blackball Federation of South Africa and Gauteng, the hosting province in 2009, and we are looking forward to many years of working together to take the game of Blackball to where it belongs…way past Mars! We are particularly satisfied when observing the high standard of management and administration now within the National Blackball Federation. With a
strong foundation like this pool can only go forward exactly where we want to see our players, administrators, coaches, referees and supporters go; to the top of every scale and earning their just rewards, be it emotional, financial or recognition of all sorts to our deserving players.
South Africa has proved that we can deliver world champions of an unequaled caliber and we salute you too.
We wish all participants, spectators, pool families and sponsors in this historic blackball-pool event well, and may each player get what he or she was prepared to work hard for.

The Table of Championsby Rick Schoenlank
2009 is no doubt the most exciting year for BlackBall with so many new and exciting ideas filtering through its members. The newest addition is “The Table of Champions”. This table, which will differ in artwork every year from now on, is special in many ways.
The United King Pool Table is a one of a kind branded table which will be auctioned off to the highest bidder each year at the Nationals during the Awards Ceremony at the end of the Festival. The profits generated, which we hope will increase each year, will be passed onto the hosting province to raise funds for the commitment and effort endured during the year.
From 2010 each side of the Pool Table will be dedicated to the previous year’s individual champions, with their respective photo on
stthe side dedicated to their category. This is the 1 year the table is being made, and, with the distance of each champion being too far away, we have decided to dedicate the table to sporting heroes in various other code of sport, to help stimulate the idea of what the
sttable actually represents. This in itself will make the 1 Table of Champions absolutely unique.
Spaces will be provided each year for those individual’s signatures who win their respective categorys’ singles titles, as well those teams who win their respective team titles for each category.
For the buyer, the table will be an investment. With only 1 being produced each year, and with the uniqueness of the table in its entirety, the buyer should be able to sell the table in the future for the same price, or even more.
But what makes this table unique to the players. Well, much like Centre Court at Wimbledon (of which one side is dedicated to from where the original idea came from) selected matches and players will be scheduled on this table. For example, the 2009 Number 1 seed, Sandile Madlala will have earned the right to play on our centre court, “The Table of Champions”. Should a match arise which would be seen as a spectator match, then this match will be moved there at the discretion of the Tournament Coordinator. The table will have a dedicated referee for every match played, as well as be brushed, leveled and treated accordingly for the benefit of both spectators, and players playing on the table.
We are in the process of trying to get a live feed to this table as well to show matches live through CueSportFever, but at the worst, will record matches downloadable on the site.
We invite all those interested in attaining the table to come and bid in our auction at the Nationals. It’ll be worth it…
The Start of a Traditionby Shervin Nayagar
Every sport needs tradition. It presents a sense of identity and prestige to a sport, and drives athletes to achieve the awards and accolades associated with these traditions. It even influences spectators and fans to become religious followers of their sport of choice. One could even go as far as saying that tradition adds an emotional touch where strict laws, bureaucracy, and politics have always ruled. At the end of the day, a sport needs tradition if it wants to successful, marketable, appealing, and inspiring. For example, arguably the greatest sporting tradition that exists today is the concept of the Olympic Flame. How would the Olympic Games be affected if the Flame did not exist? Would the same emotion and awe be instilled in the athletes and spectators all over the world, if the lighting of the Flame was not a part of the opening ceremony? It definitely does form a large part of the soul of the Olympics, and who knows how the Games might be perceived if this tradition was not born.
It was on this thought that I realised blackball-pool is a sport without tradition, and as a result we are not reaching the ideals that other sports out there have achieved over the past few decades. We need to create a history and identity for ourselves, and hope that his helps take the sport to what we dream it would someday be like. The idea of the stars for teams that have won the SA Blackball Championships was thus conceived, and it was gladly welcomed by the National Blackball Federation.
The concept is not original however. It was taken from a soccer context, where international teams wear stars on their kit to symbolise their World Cup victories. It is a simple concept, one star per World Cup won. If we look at this year's provincial kit for the SA Blackball Championships, you will see some teams, and not the entire province, have one or more stars on the provincial logo. This is to show that the team has won the SA Blackball Championships previously, in its respective category. Once again, one star per Championship won, and one star to be added on for every further victory in their category. This year, in the Opens category, Kwa-Zulu Natal A1 will be leading the way with an impressive 3 stars, representing their victories in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Gauteng A1, who won the inaugural Championships in 2005, will have one star embroided on their logo. The same principle applies to the Seniors, Ladies, Under 23 and Under 18 categories.
I do hope that these stars pave the way for a solid traditional foundation in the sport of blackball-pool. But the buck does not stop here. We still need ideas, and creativity, and we need to hear it from you, the players. Across the great savanna of the Serengeti they flew, over the waters of the Indian
Ocean they jetted, across the Land of the Matabele they drove for hours. Their
hearts beating with passion to conquer. The children of Mother Africa were
preparing for battle. The field was set in the subtropical Bushveld of the Carousel
plains. One by one the lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo from across the African
rivers entered the arena. The battle ground was drawn where losing was not
considered to be an option. There could be only one.....
The African sun was slowly rising on the fourth encounter of the Blackball. Neither
the distance of travel nor the barriers of a different tongue could deter the spirit of
competitiveness to the road of ultimately crowning the King of Africa. The arena for
the showdown was carefully and meticulously prepared by the management of the Carousel. Flags from across Africa were
patiently hanging on the arena walls and witnessing how the participants were doing it proud. The excellent service and
hospitality from the Carousel bode for a happening to be remembered long after the last bus has left for the journey home.
The fourth All Africa Cup has turned out to be the flagship to date of the culmination of all the tireless efforts of its national
members. A success story that each person or federation can claim ownership to. The general quality of play, discipline and skill
was absolutely amazing! The Protea players of South Africa have done the country and the National Blackball Federation proud
by once again walking away with the winners laurels.
In the ten years of its existence, the AAPA has come a long way. When making the Pool world complete, as the last continent to
join the world structures of pool, Africa has subsequently proven itself as a worthy member and a force to be reckoned with
within the international arena. We are in the process of negotiations to have Cue Sport included in the All Africa Games 2011 –
Mozambique.ndDuring the AAPA AGM held on October 22 2009, it was resolved that the African Cup in the future would feature the whole
spectrum of disciplines in the WPA stable namely 8 ball, 9 ball and 10 ball played on the 9ft tables. The dynamics of the AAPA as a
continental body has gained momentum with the addition of Cameroon and Zimbabwe as members bringing the total of the
AAPA membership in 2009 to 14 African countries. A change in the executive was brought about by the elections at the AGM,
with the seat of the Vice Presidency now belonging to Swaziland, the Secretary General now belonging to Malawi, and the
Presidency and Treasurer seated in South Africa.
Blackball-pool, as the game of preference on the traditional 7 ft tables, has now spread as far as China, Taiwan and the Slovak
regions of Eastern Europe. This will make participation for the African players more exciting as new grounds are continuously
been broken, increasing the international participation field to encompass the whole world.
The pool fraternity internationally is hungry for battle with their African counterparts.
We as Africans are equally hungry to expose our talent to the international pool community, and after exposing our talents, to
simply beat them at every game of pool in the process!

As per the norm that we now expect from the annual Carling Black Label Sink the Black tournament, one would expect
the same. Not this time however. A big thank you to Carling Black Label, they pull out all the stops, they seem to improve each
year at the most anticipated, biggest paying pool event of the year. No one could have predicted what was in store for them
from Friday evening on the 19th of December 2008 until late Sunday afternoon.
Each player once again got flown to and from Durban International and shuttled through to Southern Sun's Elangeni on
Durban's beachfront. After checking in we were asked to meet on the 2nd floor of the hotel for a briefing about the schedule, the
rules and regulations, a registration form, a package containing a CBL golf shirt, a unique bottle opening cap and an envelope
containing cash so that players could buy food on the Saturday afternoon and evening. There was also a mini bar with
complimentary Carling Black Label and soft drinks. All other meals were a la carte buffet at the hotel, and being one who loves
food, I can only say, my eyes were bigger than my stomach once again, as I dug into the 5 Star Elangeni cuisines with huge hope of
getting a taste of at least every dish in the starters, the mains, and the dessert. Alas, I never made the dessert. Breakfast was
much the same for me, although I held myself back as I prepared on Saturday to try to win the R100 000 first prize up for grabs.
After a healthy dinner we were all shuttled through to Sun Coast Casino to practice for Saturday's tourney until 12 in the
evening. Saturday arrived and the nerves started creeping in, not only for me, but all the contenders. We collected our stylish
black and red “Sink the Black” shirts in the morning, which we played in for the rest of the day. The professional photo shoot
saw some more dramatic shots of the players than usual, with unbelievable effects from the photographer. The dreaded draw
drew upon us quickly after another practice session in the morning. Each of the 32 players was treated to a personal
introduction to the ever growing crowd. Once all called out, it was draw time. Each player had a personalised black pool ball
with their name in gold on it. They were all mixed up in a huge contraption whereby a lady all the way from China was asked to
put them through a small hole as they rolled in a random draw that saw the players pulling the funniest of faces as they started
working out what they needed to do to try and win the first prize.
The time came and the first 16 players played out on the Carling Black Label, United pool tables covered with red Simonis
cloth and each racked with Aramith balls by United referees in their now famous black and white striped kit. The brutal race to 4
rounds carried on until late in the evening, where spectators were treated to some absolutely brilliant, nail biting finishes from
the contenders until only 2 players were left, namely Gauteng friends, Dustin Alves and Shervin Nayagar. Each round's results
were available on anyone of the 4 LCD screens setup for the spectators which also switched to the filming of some of the games.
Before the final started the pocket winners competition was played out by the 2 finalists, where I think the minimum
won by any pocket winner was R15 000, with Prince Morake walking away with the most, that being R65 000. By the start of
the final there was a massive crowd watching. Dustin, who undoubtedly had the toughest draw of the tournament, finished at
every opportunity to coast to a white wash victory.
Sunday arrived, and reality set in for 31 players who now knew that their opportunity for the big prize was now over. At
10am we all made our way through to the swimming pool area of the Elangeni for the prize giving, where another buffet of food
was awaiting us, as well as more complimentary Carling Black Label beer. We were all given personalised CBL Sink the Black
Cheques, with the amount won. Soon after the players packed up their belongings and checked out, waiting for the flight home.
The anticipated and always anti-climactic end had been reached, and players were now ready to go home and tell their loved
ones about one of the greatest tournaments that they had been a part of.

You have won every possible Blackball title there is to win. The Gauteng Championships, the SA Championships, the All Africa Cup, the World Championships, as well a many Doubles titles. How does it feel?It's the ultimate feeling, looking back at the time when I first started; sometimes I can't believe it myself. I still remember when I was trying to figure out how to hold a cue. It just proves that hard work and commitment pays off at the end.What advice do you have for up and coming players who want to make their mark in the game?Just be yourself and original, listen to advise and take constructive criticism, practice as much as possible and play against the best players all the time especially at big tournaments; it is only through competitive play that you will develop as a player. Keeping it simple is the most complicated thing to do, if you master simplicity, then you are set for bigger things. You are a family man. How do you find the time to practise, given your tough working schedule, your duties to the Gauteng Blackball Federation, and your family commitments?Very difficult situation, I believe without my family's support I probably wouldn't have won all these titles (special thanks to my mother Minah Morake and my big brother Prince Morake who have been there since the beginning). I practise at my pool club after work in the evening for an hour or 2. I suppose pool is my life so my commitment to improve the standard of the game through better administration will always be there. Honestly in the past I spent little time with my family and that will change as I have now achieved my playing goals. Are you happy with the progress that blackball-pool has made since its inception in 2005, compared to how pool always was in SA?Oh yes and I support blackball-pool 200%. Wish it was introduced to us 10 years earlier and our sport would be at
You are a great ambassador of the sport of blackball-pool, helping with coaching and development, as well as holding the Gauteng Blackball Federation together. Do you think that this has had a positive or negative influence on your game?Honestly I'd say both a positive and a negative impact. I've learned a lot being in administration as its things happening behind the scenes and how important that part is to any organization at any level and in the process a lot of players appreciate the fact that we have great players involved in the development of blackball-pool. But from a player's point of view, I'd say that my game isn't what it should be, I spend most of my time nurturing other players, mostly in Soweto and in the process I am not as consistent as I would like. Do you think the players are doing enough to develop the sport, or relying too much on officials to get the sport to where it should be? If not, how can the players make a difference? Currently our players are not helping at all; they should understand the importance of a great relationship between the administrators and players and share the vision. If players can be professional and respect the sport, on and off the table, then we will be heading in the right direction.Finally, everyone is saying that this year's Championships in Carnival City are going to be the best yet. What are your views?It certainly will as all provinces seem to have faith in the new NBF executive and share the same vision, with communication being better and the support from the current sponsors namely Carling Black Label, United Pool Tables, and Carnival City Casino being at its utmost best, we should have a great 2009 Championships.

In SA, it should be rated at least in the top 6 of the country's major sporting disciplines and we should get more sponsors investing in the game and more important a spot at the Olympics. Do you have any advice to pool players who are yet to embrace the sport of blackball-pool?The sport is unique in everything it has to offer and once you get into it you are hooked for life. I am sure they will love the passion, drama and the level of competitiveness surrounding the game both locally and globally. I strongly urge all the pool players (both playing social or otherwise) to register with blackball-pool so that we can harness all our resources collectively and let blackball-pool reach the greatest heights. How do you see yourself finishing at this year's Championships, and which players do you think are favourites to win the Open singles title?
I am looking at clinching the title for the second time seeing that is the only thing that I'm playing for, it is now only about the number of times I win a title in my blackball-pool career. Favourites are Shervin Nayagar and Sandile Madlala, based on their consistency especially this year. Rick Schoenlank as last year's semi-finalist, but then of course you can't write off the defending champ Frans Mathe.
