October, 2009 Dear Community Supporter: Lao Family Community Development was founded 29 years ago with the goal of helping strug-gling families, especially newly arrived refugees and immigrants, achieve self-sufficiency. Today we provide employment and housing counseling, foreclosure intervention, financial education, youth and senior programs and other family supports for over 10,000 clients in over 15 lan-guages. We are writing today to ask you to contribute an item or gift certificate for an online eBay
auction that we are holding to raise funds to help struggling families in the East Bay work
their way out of poverty. Your support will come at a critical time for Oakland’s struggling families. Times are tough, and for those of us on the front lines of fighting poverty, business is unfortunately booming. Our programs have grown by 20% in the past 6 months, but our current funding isn’t flexible or ade-quate enough to meet the demand. We need your support to ensure that our organization is healthy and able to respond to the growing needs of our community. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to support our programs, but we also want to raise awareness of Lao Family’s work. And as we promote our work through this online auction, we will happily promote your
generous support.
We will work hard to ensure that your current and future customers know about your commit-ment to the community. Your donation will be featured on our new website’s auction page, pro-moted locally via postcards, email newsletters, fliers, and online promotions. It will also be searchable by eBay’s 2million users from around the globe. We offer our contributors the option to help us promote your participation in this great philanthropic event with posters, table tents, and a badge on your website that showcases your donated item and links to our auction page. We will also be happy to also provide a link on www.lfcd.org to your website for a minimum of one year, as well as listing your business on our 2010 Annual Report. We make it fun and easy to provide a helping hand to those who need it most!
We hope you will get involved in this worth-while event by donating an item or gift certificate worth $50 or more. The more creative the better! Please review the enclosed package for ideas and details, and fill out the form at the back and return it to us, or log on to www.lfcd.org to fill it out online. We’ll get in touch and have volunteers coordinate pick up and other details. If you can’t help with an item this time, please consider passing this request on to someone who can, and help us spread the word! Thank your for your generous support, Chaosarn S. Chao Kathy C. Lao Family Community
Development, Inc. was
founded in 1980 by
Southeast Asian refugees
as a Mutual Assistance
Association (MAA) to help
their fellow refugees re-
build their lives in the Bay
Area after escaping the
political and social up-
heaval that ravaged their
home countries.
Almost 30 years later, we have grown from the three-
bedroom apartment where we were founded to a 30,000
square foot headquarters in the San Antonio/Fruitvale
district in Oakland and two satellite offices which serve
Sacramento and Contra Costa Counties.
Our 45-person staff serves over 10,000 clients each year
in over 15 languages. We offer assistance with eco-
nomic development, employment, housing, ESL classes,
financial literacy, homeownership education and foreclo-
sure intervention, small business assistance, tax assis-
tance, youth and senior programs, special crime victim
assistance, and social adjustment for immigrants and
refugees. We deliver these services in an integrated
manner, meaning that case managers assess clients’
needs broadly, and link them to other Lao Family de-
partments or other agencies for comprehensive care.
Over the past 30 years, our services have expanded and
diversified to meet the needs of the broader community,
but our mission remains true to the spirit our founding:
We build healthy communities by helping indi-
viduals and families achieve self-sufficiency.
