Pod has been a buzz word on the Illinois State bus all season long. There were discussions about Kyle Nelson’s noisy iPod, stories about Corey Maines and Burger King fryPods, and even talk about Illinois State senior middle inelders Mike Stalowy and Collin Salzenstein playing like two peas in a pod. Two weeks ago, however, the pod talk took on a different meaning after the Redbirds qualied for their rst State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament since 2001. The Redbirds open tournament play against the top-seeded Missouri State Bears at 3 p.m. Wednesday inside Eck Stadium – the second game, on the rst day of a new tournament format for the Missouri Valley Conference. League coaches agreed to change the event to a two-pod, single championship game tournament with three guaranteed games and a set schedule – a shift from the double-elimination, scheduling nightmare in years past. Illinois State, seeded sixth, will face the No. 1, 2 and 3 seeds in the tournament – matching up with No. 2 Indiana State Thursday at 3 p.m. and No. 3 Wichita State at 7 p.m. Friday, in addition to the game with the Bears Wednesday. The Redbirds are grouped with the Sycamores and Shockers in Pod 2 and the team with the best overall record after three days of competition will advance to Saturday’s title game against the winner of Pod 1. That game will be televised on the Fox Sports Networks, starting with a pre-game show at 6:30 p.m. NOTES CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE... 2009 SCHEDULE FEBRUARY 20 at Belmont Nashville, Tenn. The Redbirds potential climb to the title looks daunting against the top three teams in the league, including the tournament’s host, but Illinois State has won a game against each squad this season and is a combined 4-3 in those series. The Redbirds used a pair of walk-off hits to hand Missouri State its fi rst conference losses and take the series earlier this season and will need some more of the same magic the second time around with the Bears. Missouri State has won seven in a row entering Wednesday’s game, including a sweep over Indiana State and Creighton. “Everybody’s excited about being here,” Illinois State head coach Jim Brownlee said. “I think anything happens in this tournament. The team that play well, obviously, that gets hot in the tournament, can run away with it. The No. 1 seed doesn’t always win and hasn’t won very often. This is a different format and we’re all going to go through it for the fi rst time. It’s interesting because we got the toughest draw, but we’ve played them all pretty well.” Missouri State’s Brayden Drake was named the Joe Carter Player of the Year and Buddy Baumann was named the MVC Pitcher of the Year – two of seven Bears to earn MVC All-Conference recognition Monday. Illinois State had fi ve players on the list, including Salzenstein, the second-team shortstop. The Bears fi nished the regular season second in the Valley with a .300 team batting average and hit a league-best 57 home runs. Thursday, the Redbirds face Indiana State, the league’s most improved team. The Sycamores lead the conference with a .318 batting average and scored 412 runs during the regular season. Four Sycamores were named to the All-MVC First Team and nine total received league recognition. Brady Shoemaker fi nished second in the conference with a .406 batting average overall and hit 14 home runs. On Friday night, Illinois State takes on Wichita State in a game that’s surely to draw a crowd of more than 6,000 – especially if the game has championship game implications. The Shockers are one of the top pitching teams in the conference with a 4.21 ERA and are holding opposing batters to a .266 mark. The Redbirds won their fi rst game against the Shockers in Wichita since 1995 earlier this season, but dropped the series 2-1. “I think you throw everything out the window when the tournament starts, that stuff doesn’t make any difference,” Brownlee said. “You have to go out and play your game. When we played well, we threw strikes, we hit our spots, were competitive in the batter’s box, and played really good defense. We have no margin for error. If we don’t do one of those things we’re not going to be playing on Saturday. When we do those things we’re pretty good. I know we’ll play hard this week.” Illinois State, seeded sixth, will open the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament against top-seeded Missouri State at Eck Stadium in Wichita, Kan. at 3 p.m. Wednesday. The Redbirds will take on No. 2 seed Indiana State Thursday at 3 p.m. before playing tournament host and No. 3 seed Wichita State at 7 p.m. Friday.

MVC TO PLAY BASEBALL TOURNAMENT WITH NEW FORMAT The Missouri Valley Conference will use a new six-team format for its post-season baseball tournament that will determine the league’s automatic entry in this year’s NCAA tournament. The top six teams in regular-season play will meet in the conference tournament, May 20-23 in Wichita, Kan., and will be split into two 3-team pools or pods, with the two pod winners meeting in a single championship game. Teams will be placed in pods based on seed. Seeds 1, 4 and 5 will be in one pod and seeds 2, 3 and 6 in the other pod. Each team in the tournament is guaranteed to play three games. Teams in each pod will play two teams in its pod and one team outside its pod. The two teams with the best composite records in their respective pods will play for the tournament championship. In cases of multiple ties, the highest seed in a pod will advance to the championship game. This year’s format replaces last year’s six-team, double-elimination tournament bracket where the top two seeds received byes. Unlike in previous years, teams will know days in advance of the tournament who their opponents will be each day and when they will play. This year, there will only be one championship game, set for 7 p.m. Saturday, May 23. In the past, if a previously unbeaten team lost in the fi rst championship game, a second title game was played to determine the league champion. (Courtesy of MVCSports.com)

THEY’RE IN! With a 2-1 series win over Bradley, Illinois State fi nished 11-11 in Missouri Valley Conference play and secured its fi rst State Farm MVC Tournament berth since 2001. The Redbirds fi nished .500 or better in conference play for the seventh time since joining the Valley, and for the fi rst time since the 2001 squad went 17-11 in league play.

REDBIRDS AT THE MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT Illinois State is 11-29 all-time in Missouri Valley Conference Tournament games since becoming eligible for postseason play in 1984. Illinois State is 2-2 all-time against Missouri State, their opponent Wednesday, and winless in eight meetings with Indiana State, Thursday’s opponent. The Redbirds are 2-8 against the Shockers, Friday night’s opponent, in Valley tournament games. In ISU’s last trip to the tournament in 2001, the Redbirds lost their opening game to Evansville before being sent home by Indiana State, 8-7, in extra-innings. Illinois State’s last meeting with Missouri State in the postseason resulted in a 9-0 Redbird win over the Bears in 1999. That was also the last year ISU met Wichita State in the tournament, a 10-8 win by WSU. In 1994, Illinois State crashed the MVC Tournament party and became the fi rst sixth-seed to win the conference title. The Redbirds opened with a one-run win over the nationally-ranked Shockers at Eck Stadium, and won three out of the next four to claim the crown. Matt Gainer was named the tournament’s MVP.

FIVE REDBIRDS EARN ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS Illinois State shortstop Collin Salzenstein was one of fi ve Redbirds to earn all-conference honors after he was named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference Second Team, as announced by the league offi ce Monday. Salzenstein, a senior from St. Louis who spent most of the season at the Redbirds’ leadoff hitter, tied for the team high with 56 hits and fi nished the regular season with a .320 batting average. Ryan Camp, Ryan Court, Tyler McNeely and Mike Stalowy were all named as honorable mention selections. The fi ve selections are the most for Illinois State since the Redbirds placed fi ve on the 2006 All-Missouri Valley Conference teams.

INTERVIEW POLICYAll interviews should be arranged through the Illinois State Athletics Media Relations Offi ce. Players and coaches will be available for interviews throughout the week and at the conclusion of all games. In most situations, the most convenient opportunity for media interviews is following the team practice sessions. If this is not a convenient time for the media, return telephone calls from the student-athletes to the media will be arranged. Interviews on game days will be held approximately 10 minutes after the last game. There will be no interviews between games of doubleheaders.

Page 3: 2009 Illinois State Baseball Game Notes

WHO’S HOT? Five Redbirds are batting over .300 in the team’s last 10 games leading to a .310 team batting average during that stretch. Anthony Ruffolo leads the team a .450 (18-for-40) batting average in the last 10 contests and is joined above .300 by Collin Salzenstein (.368), Ryan Court (.359), Evan Kohli (.353) and Tyler McNeely (.300). Court has 12 runs batted in during that stretch, along with a pair of home runs, and 7-of-12 hits for Kohli were doubles. ISU has 42 extra-base hits in the last 10 games, including 10 home runs.

LIKE A GOOD NEIGHBOR, STALOWY IS THERE Illinois State senior second baseman Mike Stalowy was named a recipient of the Missouri Valley Conference Good Neighbor Award for the spring season, as announced by the league offi ce May 14. Stalowy was one of ten student athletes, one from each member institution, to be honored as a model student-athlete by the Valley. Stalowy is the Redbirds’ leading hitter with a .327 batting average and 39 runs scored. Twenty-one of Stalowy’s 56 hits have gone for extra-bases, including a career-best four triples and the fi rst three home runs of his career. The Joliet, Ill. native went 3-for-4 with a home run and two doubles off the wall in the return to his hometown (May 12) as the Redbirds dropped a 14-8 decision to Notre Dame. Stalowy earned Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week honors April 13. In addition to being a leader on the fi eld of play, Stalowy has been an exemplary leader in the classroom and community. While at ISU, Stalowy has been a member of the AFNI Honor Roll and served as a member and offi cer of the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC). Stalowy has also been an active participant in the State Farm/MVC Just Read Program, Christmas for Kids, Thanksgiving Food Drive and coordinated the baseball team’s American Red Cross Blood Drive. He’s worked with Heritage Manor and Big Brother’s and Big Sisters.

CAMP AT IT AGAIN Illinois State freshman Ryan Camp pitched a career-high 8.1 innings but didn’t get a decision in the extra-inning win at Bradley (May 8). It was sixth time in eight Missouri Valley Conference series that the Redbirds have won a Camp start. The Mapleton, Ill. native is 3-2 with a 4.39 ERA and is limiting opposing hitters to a .234 batting average in Valley games.

T-MAC’S POWER SURGE Illinois State’s Tyler McNeely hit two home runs in the May 3 loss to Creighton. The redshirt sophomore has hit seven home runs this season after never leaving the yard in 24 games played during his previous two seasons. McNeely, who missed the majority of last season due to a shoulder injury, is tied for second with Matt Bolt for most home runs in a single season over the past fi ve years, behind Kevin Dubler’s nine-home run season in 2008.

NEW STADIUM AT DUFFY BASS FIELD DEDICATED Illinois State offi cially dedicated its new stadium at Duffy Bass Field against Creighton, Saturday, May 2, in front of a season-high 823 fans. The Illinois State Athletics Department broke ground on the $3.2 million make-over a year ago.

COURT NAMED TO COSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT V FIRST TEAM Illinois State third baseman Ryan Court was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District V First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) May 7. Court was one of three Missouri Valley Conference players on the District V team. Court, a redshirt sophomore, leads the baseball team with a 3.82 GPA in business teacher education. He has been one of Illinois State’s most productive offensive players after playing in just eight games in 2008. He has posted a 3.5 GPA or higher and landed on the AFNI Honor Roll in all fi ve of his semesters at Illinois State, and has twice posted a perfect 4.0 GPA in a semester. Court is eligible for Academic All-America consideration when the next round of voting begins.

COURT NOTCHES MVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR - APRIL 20 Illinois State third baseman Ryan Court drove in seven runs and helped the Redbirds to a sweep of Northern Iowa April 17-18 and was named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week, the conference offi ce announced Monday (April 20). Court notched seven RBI in a doubleheader, including the deciding runs on a two-run home run in game two, to help Illinois State (19-12, 9-4 MVC) fi nish a series sweep over Northern Iowa Saturday at Riverfront Stadium. Court batted .421 (8-for-19) last week and added three doubles for a total of four extra-base hits in fi ve games. The sophomore from Sleepy Hollow, Ill., led Illinois State in hits (8), RBI (8) and tied for the team lead in runs scored (6) and on-base percentage (.455) during the week.

BROWNLEE REACHES A PAIR OF MILESTONES Illinois State head coach Jim Brownlee earned career win No. 850, April 17, as the Redbirds topped Northern Iowa, 8-2, and earned win No. 150 as the Redbirds’ skipper in the fi rst game of a doubleheader April 18. Brownlee, who has announced he will retire at the end of the season, has compiled an 857-815-5 record in 30 seasons as a head coach with Evansville and Illinois State.

WINNING THE CLOSE ONES Illinois State is making winning close games a habit. The Redbirds are 9-2 in one run games this season and have three walk-off hits in Missouri Valley Conference play. Corey Maines provided a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th against Evansville (March 20) to open newly renovated Duffy Bass Field and conference play with a 3-2 win. Mike Stalowy and Anthony Ruffolo both collected walk-off singles against Missouri State to hand the Bears their fi rst Valley losses and give the Redbirds a 2-1 series win over the conference leader. Stalowy added a walk-off single in Sunday’s regular season fi nale against SIU-Edwardsville. Illinois State is 4-0 in extra-inning contests.

STALOWY NAMED MVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK - APRIL 13 Illinois State senior second baseman Mike Stalowy was named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week after leading the Redbirds to a series win over Missouri State with a pair of key late-inning at-bats, the conference offi ce announced April 13. Stalowy had plenty of hits as he batted .526 (10-for-19) in four games, but it was his timing that helped Illinois State hand Missouri State its fi rst Valley loss and take the weekend series from the conference-leading team, 2-1. The Joliet, Ill., native hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to give Illinois State a 6-5 win in the series opener Saturday. The hit capped a career-best 5-for-5 performance. In the series fi nale Sunday, Stalowy drew a walk in the bottom of the 10th with the Redbirds trailing by one and later scored the game-winning run on Anthony Ruffolo’s walk-off single. In all, Stalowy drove in eight runs and scored six while knocking two doubles, a triple and a home run, to guide the team to a 3-1 record last week. Stalowy was a perfect 2-for-2 on stolen bases and handled nine putouts and nine assists with no errors in the fi eld.

EL PRIMER VEZ Five Illinois State hitters have connected on their fi rst career home runs as Redbirds, this season. Ryan Court, Tyler McNeely, Mike Stalowy, Evan Kohli and Anthony Ruffolo have all gone yard for the fi rst time with Corey Maines the only repeat offender from previous years on the team. Ruffolo was the latest to join the home run club with a line drive shot over the left fi eld wall at Eastern Illinois. Ruffolo sent another one over the wall in Charleston, Ill., but it was robbed by Curt Restko. McNeely leads the team with seven long balls this season.

WELCOME TO THE WIN COLUMN Illinois State relievers Matt Werderitch (April 8 at Purdue) and Kenny Long (April 12 vs. Missouri State) have both earned their fi rst collegiate wins this season. Freshman starter Ryan Camp also earned his fi rst career win against Trinity (March 12) at the Irish Baseball Classic in San Antonio.

RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY Illinois State had plenty of weather adversity to deal with this season. Ten games were cancelled due to poor weather conditions, including two Missouri Valley Conference games. Most recently, the Redbirds dumped the May 13 contest with Valparaiso because of thunderstorms. Illinois State was forced to cancel two games, May 28-29, against Illinois Wesleyan and Western Michigan. and a date with Northern Illinois April 7. Rain washed out three-consecutive games the week before against Illinois and the last two games of the Indiana State series. Illinois State was unable to fi nish its season-opening series at Belmont because of cold temperatures and was washed out in the fi nal two games at Murray State. Illinois State has had to adjust its schedule 16 times because of poor weather conditions this season. With Illinois State’s qualifi cation for the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament for the fi rst time since 2001, the Redbirds are guaranteed at least three games in Wichita this week. If the Redbirds are held to just three games at the tournament, the team will play 48 contests, the least amount of games since 1988 - the last time Illinois State played 48 games in a season. Over the past fi ve seasons, the team has averaged nearly 53 games played per season.

REDBIRDS TACKLE ECK HEX Illinois State starting pitcher Ryan Camp used the good and the bad to help erase the ugly, as the Redbirds snapped a 25-game road losing streak to Wichita State with a 5-4 victory at Eck Stadium (April 3). Camp struck out a career-high nine batters and tied his career-high with fi ve walks while hitting two batters, but held the Shockers to one run over six white-knuckle innings. The Redbirds won their third-consecutive Friday night game to start Missouri Valley Conference play and won their fi rst game against the Shockers in Wichita since April 22, 1995. Jim Sajewich earned the save in the ninth inning.

THEY FINISH WHAT THEY START Illinois State’s Ryan Copeland and Corey Maines have combined for eight complete games this season. The duo surpassed last season’s total (3) by notching four complete games through the team’s fi rst fi ve contests this season. Copeland and Maines fi nished both of their fi rst two starts starts - both seven-inning, doubleheader games. Copeland added a nine-inning complete game against South Dakota State at the Metrodome Tournament and a nine-inning four-hit performance at Northern Iowa. Copeland threw a complete game at Southern Illinois and notched his team- and league-leading sixth complete game against SIU-Edwardsville Saturday. Copeland is in the top-20 nationally in complete games pitched, although the majority of the players ahead of him pitch in conferences that have built in doubleheaders.

BROKEN BIRDS Kevin Tokarski, a 2008 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Honorable Mention selection, missed fall workouts because of wrist surgery at the end of last summer and will miss the rest of the season after suffering a set back in his recovery. Tokarski, a preseason Brooks Wallace Award Watchlist selection, started the fi rst three games of the season for Illinois State but wrist pain forced a last-second lineup change before the Murray State series. Jake Wielebnicki is also out for the remainder of the season after undergoing successful ulnar transposition surgery to correct an issue with his throwing arm. Wielebnicki struck out nine batters with no walks in 7.0 innings before being shut down. Eric Mahler is questionable for this week’s slate after suffering a hamstring injury late in Illinois State’s fi nal game of the Irish Baseball Classic. Mahler had made six consecutive starts and was hitting .364 after beginning the season as a reserve. He returned to the lineup for an at-bat against Bradley but left the game immediately after running to fi rst. Jake Thornton dislocated his shoulder against Missouri State (April 11) and is out for the remainder of the season. Right-handed reliever Matt Werderitch is available for the Valley Tournament, but doubtful with pain in his throwing arm.

ILLINOIS STATE EXCEEEDS EXPECTATIONS FROM VALLEY COACHES Illinois State didn’t have a lot of pressure from outside the program as the Redbirds were picked to fi nish eighth in conference play by league coaches in the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll. Missouri State received eight of nine possible fi rst-place votes and was tabbed as the favorite to win the Valley crown. Creighton was picked second and defending-league champion Wichita State, which received one fi rst-place vote, was picked third. The Redbirds, who went 22-30 and 6-18 in the Valley in 2008, were picked to fi nish above Evansville during the 2009 season. The Redbirds fi nished the season 11-11 in conference play and qualifi ed for the State Farm MVC Tournament as the No. 6 seed..

BROWNLEE ENJOYING SUCCESS IN FINAL SEASON AS REDBIRD SKIPPER The 2009 campaign is the last for Illinois State head coach Jim Brownlee, as the Redbirds’ leader announced his plans to retire following this season. Brownlee just completed his 30th regular season as a college head coach, having spent the last seven years at his alma mater, Illinois State, and 23 years at Evansville. During that time, Brownlee has amassed 857 victories, which ranks him in the top-40 for wins among all active NCAA Division I coaches, and recently notched win No. 150 as the Redbirds’ leader. He has won seven conference coach of the year awards, produced more than 40 players who have gone on to play professionally and mentored 10 academic All-Americans.

BROWNLEE HONORED BY PITCH AND HIT CLUB Illinois State head coach Jim Brownlee was named the Pitch and Hit Club of Chicago’s College Coach of the Year during the organization’s 63rd annual awards evening at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Ill., Jan. 26. Brownlee was one of 22 honorees, including major-leaguers Jim Thome (Chicago White Sox), Jayson Werth (Philadelphia Phillies), Giovanni Soto (Chicago Cubs) and Carlos Quentin (Chicago White Sox). The award, which recognized Brownlee’s accomplishments heading into his 30th, and fi nal, season as a collegiate head coach, was part of an exciting weekend for Brownlee, who also celebrated his 39th wedding anniversary with his wife, Candy, Saturday, Jan. 25. The Pitch and Hit Club of Chicago is a professional baseball organization formed in 1942 to promote goodwill toward baseball and fellowship among baseball professionals in the Chicagoland area.

THE KINGSTON EFFECT Mark Kingston, who helped Illinois State set school records for wins and scoring as an assistant in 1999, joined the Redbird baseball coaching staff as associate head coach last summer. Kingston, who spent the last seven years as recruiting coordinator at Tulane and served as an assistant on the Miami (Fla.) team that won the 2001 College World Series, has coached at the collegiate level for 12 years and is widely respected throughout the sport as one of the top assistants in the nation. Kingston spent the past fi ve seasons as associate head coach for the Green Wave with the responsibility of building the Tulane team through recruiting, coaching Tulane hitters, and developing catchers and infi elders. Kingston will serve as associate head coach during the upcoming Redbird baseball season and will succeed current head coach Jim Brownlee when he retires at the end of the 2009 campaign.

EIGHT MEN IN Eight student-athletes signed national letters of intent to play baseball at Illinois State during the early signing period last fall. Infi elders Angelo Burrage (Chicago, Ill.), Brett Kay (Arlington Heights, Ill.), and Brett Thaden (Rosemount, Minn.), along with outfi elders Blair Springfi eld (Decatur, Ill.) and Ty Wiesemeyer (Troy, Ill.), and pitchers Steve Maher (Burnsville, Minn.), Brad Sorkin (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) and Cam Verbeke (Elmwood Park, Ill.), make up the class that will arrive on campus in fall 2009. All fi ve of the Redbirds’ Illinois high school recruits are ranked among the top-50 players in the state according to Prep Baseball Report, including Springfi eld, the No. 5 player in Illinois. In Wiesemeyer, Illinois State also landed the top junior college outfi elder in the state, according to Perfect Game Crosschecker, another baseball recruiting analyst.
