  • Detecnicks Detecting Glossary

NO MATTER WHAT THE HOBBY ANY OF US DECIDE TO TAKE UP, WE ARE ALWAYS FACED WITH ACONFUSING JUMBLE OF WORDS AND PHRASES THAT MEAN NOTHING TO US AND STAND THERE WITH BLANK EXPRESSIONS WONDERING WHAT ON EARTH THE SALESPERSON OR ENTHUSIASTIS GOING ON ABOUT. WE HOPE THAT THE FEW PHRASES AND TERMINOLOGY THAT WE ATTEMPT

TO PUT INTO PLAIN ENGLISH BELOW WILL BE OF SOME USE TO YOU.

Air Test A test performed to give an indication of a detectors depth capabilities when a target is passed over the search head.

All Metal A user mode that allows the acceptance of all metals as a positive signal.

Audio Target ID The ability of a detector to produce a different tone for differing metals. e.g. low tone/iron - high tone/coins

Discrimination The ability of a detector to ignore the response from a specific target range, allowing responses only from targets with higher conductivity.

    Ferrous Any iron bearing target

Ground Balance Circuitry, which allows the detector to ignore ground mineralisation manually, automatically or at a pre-set level.

Motion Detector A mode of detection that requires a movement of the search head to trigger a response from the target.

Non Ferrous Any non iron bearing target.

Non Motion A mode of detection that does not require movement of the search head to trigger a response from the target.

Notch Discrimination Circuitry allowing the user to reject a specific range of targets whilst still accepting targets above and below this etting.

Pinpointing The ability of the detector to find the exact location of a target. Either by Xing the search head or locating in an all metal mode.

Search Coil/Head A circular plate (either open or closed) containing the single or multiple transmit and receive windings used to pass over the ground to emit & recive signals from the target.

Sensitivity Loosely equated to depth control, ground conditions will determine the highest sensitivity settings allowed on a particular site.

Silent Seartch A detector producing a signal from a target whilst operating below the audible threshold.

Target ID Meter The ability of a detector to recognise a target by its conductivity and to then display a likely target ID by means of Bars, Numbers or an icon via a meter.

Tone ID The ability of the detectors discriminating circuitry to recognise & issue a different tone for metals of differing conductivity.

Threshold The tone used to establish the minimum sound level for a deep target while searching in discrimination mode, Also used as a reference point in all metal mode whilst ground balancing.

  • Detecnicks LtdEstablished October 1996

Detecnicks is a family run detecting shop for Detectorists, run by Detectorists and offers advice from many years of experience - when Detecnicks first opened in 1996, this was the basic principle behind the whole concept, a basic principle we have maintained as we have grown and will continue to do so.

As a multi line dealer we aim to supply new and experienced Detectorists with impartial advice regarding their purchase, holding in stock most of the major models and with the choices now so vast the ability to get other models as required.

OK - you now have the Detecnicks brochure in front of you, there are umpteen machines, some motion, some non-motion, some with tone ID, terms and features which may mean nothing to you, prices ranging from 10s of pounds up to many hundreds, where do I start? Dont worry, most of theinformation you need to make an informed choice you will find in this pack, if you are still not too sure, then simply give us a call and we will help find the right machine specifically suited to your individual requirements at a price which suits your budget.

We hold extensive stocks of new machines, represented by most of the major manufacturers, as well as an ever-changing selection of quality used models.

Payment can be made by all the usual methods, either by cash, cheque, and credit/debit cards.(Electron cards can only be used through our internet site or in person and cannot be processed with details supplied over the telephone unless you give permission for internet processing)

We also offer interest free finance (subject to status), which is available on all new machines of 199.00 and over. To apply simply fill in the form at the rear of this catalogue and return it to us. This facility is NOT available for the purchase of 2nd hand machines or accessories.

We offer a comprehensive service to the hobby, not only in sales, but an excellent after sales advice service. We undertake a few very minor repairs with our own electrical engineer. For more serious problems we would refer you to the appropriate manufacturer or repair agent.

You will see us at many of the events organised for the hobby in the south of England mainly, where we are happy to set up for the organisers, a trade stall with a large supply of accessories available for purchase whilst you are in the field.

We are happy to identify your finds, free of charge at weekends if you can pop in to see us, when you are free to chat over a cup of tea or coffee with other callers. If you cant call in, simply send us a picture by post or e-mail and we will reply as soon as we can.

Metal Detecting is a rewarding hobby in many ways; our aim here at Detecnicks is to make yourinitial experience as enjoyable as possible.

We look forward to welcoming you to the hobby of Metal Detecting.

  • What are Motion Detectors & Non-Motion Detectors?Motion Detectors first started to arrive on the market in the early 1980's. Before this all detectors were non-motion.Non-motion refers to the fact that you do not have to be moving the search head to trigger a response from a target. If you think of tuning a radio to your favourite station, you may occasionally have to retune it because it may have "drifted" off the station. This also applies to non-motion detectors. As you scan the ground, the tuning may slightly drift from where it was initially set, but is very easily brought back to the correct setting. A non-motion detector normally runs with a background threshold tone.

Motion refers to the fact that you have to be moving the search head to trigger a response from a target (albeit a very slight movement). Motion detectors are self-tuning, once they are switched on they are continually re-adjusting themselves for optimum performance. Motion detectors are normally silent running, they tend to be more user friendly, they are better able to cope with mineralised ground and have better discrimination capabilities.

How deep will a metal detector detect? An obvious question, but very difficult to answer. Whether a detector is described as a relatively deep seeking machine or not, will depend not just upon it's own design capabilities, but a number of other outside influences. The size of a target for instance, the larger the target, the deeper it will be found. The type of metal, some metals are more conductive than others. How the target lies in the ground, on edge or on it's side. The level of mineralisation will have an effect on the depth. Even the moisture content of the ground will have an effect. Targets tend to be found deeper in damp ground and depth will be lost in dry conditions. Taking all these variables into account a single coin sized object can be found anything between 10cm (4") to 22.5cm (9") with larger objects up to 1 m (39").What is Discrimination? The discrimination circuitry of a detector allows the detector to safely ignore unwanted metals such as small pieces of iron and silver paper, whilst still detecting more desirable metals such as gold, silver, copper and other non-ferrous metals.

Are Metal Detectors difficult to operate? No, most modern detectors are user friendly, some of the programmable, computerised models, may take a little time to master. The sophisticated modern electronics have automated most of the tasks that had to be done manually on earlier models.

What does mineralisation & ground effect mean? The ground contains varying quantities of iron oxide. These oxides have built up over many years, mainly on land worked and farmed by humans. Other land can have naturally occurring magnetic iron oxides. Metal detectors are effected by this ground mineralisation and this is referred to as ground effect. Beaches also have a ground effect caused by the electrical conductivity of salt water. Can I use a Metal Detector on the beach as well as land?Using your detector on dry sand/stones is exactly the same as using it inland. Many types of Motion detectors have been used continuously on the beaches, resulting in some great finds, while other machines are less successful or indeed useless on the wet sand, giving false signals.Talk to us to advise you on the most suitable detector for your detecting needs.Do I need a license to use a metal detector? No. The Home Office scrapped licenses in 1980.What other accessories do I need, together with my Metal Detector?A good pair of headphones is beneficial. They reduce external noise, enhance deeper, fainter signals & increase battery life. A coil cover to protect the base of the search coil is a wise choice & something to dig with. There are many products that are useful but not essential to get you going. Browse the catalogue, but please ask if you have any questions, we are more than happy to help. This is our hobby too!
