three-PeatFor the first time in the Nutmeg Classic’s history, a single team won three-straight titles as UConn defeated Yale, 6-1 to capture the 2009 Nutmeg Championship (Nov. 28). Senior michelle Binning was named the Tournament MVP, contributing a goal and an assist in the final game while sophomore alexandra garcia received the Laurie Bellevue Award. Garcia recorded her second career shutout in UConn’s 1-0 victory over Quinnipiac to earn a spot in the championship game. She became the first Connecticut goalie since Shannon Murphy to receive the award for the netminder with the best save percentage. With her MVP award, Binning became the second-consecutive UConn player named as such at the Classic.

3x3In three of its six road games this season, the Huskies have had at least one player record three points in a single game. Most recently, freshman Kelly horan put forth a career-effort with three assists at Yale (Nov. 28) in the championship game of the Nutmeg Classic. Prior to that, junior Jennifer Chaisson scored twice and had an assist in the Huskies’ 7-2 victory over Maine (Nov. 7). On Oct. 23, a trio of players finished the game at Brown with three points as rebecca hewett dished a career-best three assists, Jessica lutz scored once and had two assists and elisabeth stathopulos had an assist to go along with a pair of goals. Prior to the Huskies’ performance at Brown, UConn had not had a single player record three points in a single game since Jan. 23, 2009.

husky all-starsSenior captain amy hollstein along with assistant captains Cristin allen and Jody sydor joined sophomore monique weber as the Connecticut Husky representatives on the WHEA All-Star roster. The All-Stars lost a 4-0 game to the Women’s National Team on Nov. 22 at the Whittemore center. Connecticut assistant coach Jaime Totten served as an assistant with the Hockey East All-Stars. Weber was one of 10 sophomores on the roster while Allen, Hollstein and Sydor headlined a group of upperclassmen. The game was part of Team USA’s Qwest Tour in preparation for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

Balanced attackHead Coach heather linstad’s hope for a more balanced attack has come to fruition thus far with all except three players who have recorded at least one point and nine student-athletes who have nine or more points thus far. Senior michelle Binning, with 10 goals and six assists, leads the team in points (16) while sophomore monique weber is second with 14 points (8G, 6A). Senior Cristin allen leads the team with 12 assists and is third overall in points with 13. Freshman elisabeth stathopulous, sophomore sami evelyn and junior Brittany murphy round out the group of scorers with 10 or more points.

First and 30With the first goal of the game at then-No. 4 New Hampshire (Oct. 31), senior michelle Binning scored her 30th career goal. She was tied for fifth on the all-time goal scoring list with Kim Berry (2001-03) and captured the lone spot with her shorthanded mark at Maine (Nov. 8). Binning needs five more goals to tie classmate amy hollstein in Connecticut career goals after both hit the back of

the net against Dartmouth (Jan. 2 & 3).

Consistent PresenceAfter 16 starts this season, sophomore alexandra garcia has recorded 20 or more saves in four of the last five games, allowing just over two goals per game (2.01 goals-against average). In back-to-back games against Boston College, the Eagles’ net remained empty despite the Huskies outshooting the opposition in both games. Sophomore Alexandra Garcia turned aside 18 shots and her counterpart, Kiera Kingston, stopped 33 shots, in UConn’s 0-0 tie with Boston College (Nov. 14). The Huskies fell in a Hockey East shootout for the second time this season. UConn was once again unable to score at Boston College and dropped the weekend’s final game 4-0 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. (Nov. 15). It was the first time since November of last season that the Huskies were shutout in two-consecutive games.

Down, but not outEn route to its 7-2 victory at Maine on Nov. 8, UConn scored a program-best three shorthanded goals in a single game against the Black Bears. Three separate players showed that the Huskies are just as much an offensive threat when the opposition is on the power play. Jennifer Chaisson, michelle Binning and monique weber all scored their first career shorthanded goals. Chaisson scored on the power play as well, giving the Huskies four of their seven goals in special team sit-uations. Jessica lutz got things started in the second period and freshmen elisabeth stathopulos and Kelly horan capped things off with a goal each in the final minute of the game. Sophomore alexandra garcia made 29 saves to keep the Black Bears at bay while Cristin allen aided the offense with a career-high four assists.

rough and tumbleAn early lead disappeared at then-No. 4 New Hampshire (Oct. 31) as the Wildcats continued their home-winning streak, defeating the Huskies 3-1. Senior Jennie Bellonio made 21 saves in her first loss between the pipes this season. Classmate michelle Binning scored the lone UConn goal with assists from junior Jody sydor and senior amy hollstein. A day later, junior Brittany murphy scored the game-tying goal against Providence (Nov. 1). Sophomore alexandra garcia made eight of her 29 saves to preserve a tie through regulation. The Huskies fell in their second shootout of the 2009-10 season and fourth since the conference adopted shootout procedures following a tie after 65:00 minutes.

Brown Breaking resultsThe Huskies’ 8-1 victory at Brown was an eventful evening in Providence, R.I. as michelle Binning became the first player to score four points in a game this season with two goals and two assists. Three players finished the night with three points, the first time even a single UConn player has done so since a Jan. 23 game versus Northeastern last season. rebecca hewett had a career-high three assists while Jessica lutz (1G, 2A) and elisabeth stathopulos (2G, 1A) rounded out the trio of players to finish with three points. Binning and Stathopulos were the first pair of two goal scorers since amy hollstein and Binning each netted a pair at Minnesota State-Mankato (Oct. 4, 2008). With the first of her career, Hollstein was the first player this season to score a short-handed goal for the Huskies. After a trio of shorthanded goals at Maine, now four players have scored a man-down, just one shy of the program record five set in 2002-03. Since then, the Huskies have tied that mark twice (2004-05; 2008-09).

Defined by resultsThis season, the Huskies are led by captain and senior amy hollstein as well as assistant cap-tains junior Jody sydor and seniors Cristin allen and michelle Binning. This is the first time the Huskies will boast three assistant captains while Hollstein’s C makes her the 16th captain in UConn history and the first lone captain on the roster since Stefanie Snow in 2003-04. Each have con-tributed to the scoresheet this season with Binning the team scoring leader with 16 points (10G, 6A). Allen has a team-best 12 assists and Hollstein has scored five times and has four assists. All three contributed to the Huskies 1-0-1 weekend against Dartmouth (Jan. 2 & 3) while Binning col-lected Hockey East Pure Hockey Player of the Week Honors for the second time this season on Jan. 5.

home openerJunior Brittany murphy scored the eventual gamewinner against Syracuse (Oct. 16) in the Huskies’ 3-2 home-opening victory while senior michelle Binning and junior lauren lemond also got on the board. It was Murphy’s first gamewinner and 11th career goal. In her first start of the season, senior Jennie Bellonio made 18 saves for the win. UConn fell to Colgate (Oct. 17), 5-2, for the first time in series history. Sophomore alexandra garcia and Bellonio combined for 11 saves while junior Jody sydor and sophomore monique weber scored on Oct. 17.

undefeated variationPrior to the Oct. 17th loss to Colgate, the Huskies were undefeated against the Raiders, winning the last three meetings. UConn opened the series with a 3-1 victory in 2006 (Oct. 15) at home and continued the trend with a 2-1 win in Hamilton, N.Y. Senior amy hollstein leads the team in the all-time series with five points (1G, 4A) while classmate Cristin allen is second with a goal and a pair of assists. michelle Binning is right behind, scoring two goals in three games against the Raiders. Allen had an assist against the Raiders in the Huskies’ first loss in the all-time series.

saturday slideDespite another 20 or more save performance from sophomore alexandra garcia, UConn was unable to score in its 4-0 loss to No. 7 Clarkson (Oct. 10). Both sopho-more monique weber and freshman Kelly horan had three scoring opportunities against the Golden Knights, coming up short in the end. It was the first time UConn had faced Clarkson in women’s ice hockey.

second time is the CharmFor the second time this season, the Huskies faced off against the No. 5 nationally-ranked women’s ice hockey team. On Oct. 9, UConn was victorious over then-No. 5 St. Lawrence after overcoming an early one-goal deficit (1-0) to win its first game of the season at the Saints. Freshman elisabeth stathopulos tied the game with the first goal of her career and senior captain amy hollstein followed with her first of the season to win it for her eighth career gamewinner. Sophomore alexandra garcia made 13 saves between the pipes, eight of which came in the third period to preserve the advantage as time expired.

First time for everythingThe Oct. 3 game at then-No. 5 New Hampshire marked the first time that

Connecticut started the regular season against a Hockey East opponent on the road in program history. The Huskies had not started the season on the road since the 2005-06 season when they faced then-No. 3 Minnesota. In 2006-07, UConn started the year with a game against a conference opponent when it faced Vermont in a two-game series at Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum.

smiling Faces, new FacesSix freshmen join the Connecticut Huskies for the 2009-10 season of women’s ice hockey, including one goalie, Claire Francis. All came in with the potential to make an immediate impact and elisabeth stathopulous has certainly done that with five goals and six assists this season. Rookies Casey Knajdek, Kelly horan and maude Blain have all contributed to the UConn offense. Knajdek scored her first career goal against Dartmouth (Jan. 2) to go along with three assists. Blain has tacked on a pair of assists while Horan has two goals and six assists. Carli Pridmore has seen playing time in 12 games this season while Francis has yet to see playing time as the team’s third goaltender.

now Playing...The five-game hiatus from Hockey East opponents ends with a two-game series at Vermont on Jan. 16 and 17 for the Huskies. Both games are set to start at 2 p.m. and conclude a four-game stretch of away games for Connecticut.

Preseason PremonitionsUConn was selected fifth in the Hockey East Preseason Poll announced on Sept. 22 while New Hampshire, with 50 votes, was selected to finish atop the league standings. Just behind the Wildcats with 47 and 46 votes were Boston College and Boston University in sec-ond and third. Providence College rounded out the teams to earn first-place votes with two while UNH and BC each pulled in three. Providence was fourth in the poll while Northeastern (sixth), Vermont (seventh) and Maine (eighth) were predicted to finish behind the Huskies.

Coach...coach? coach?!Kirsti Anderson, a 2005 graduate of Dartmouth, is in her first season as an assistant coach with the Huskies, but is not new to the coaching scene. Prior to joining the UConn coaching staff, Anderson was an assistant for two seasons at Hamilton College. Anderson was part of two NCAA Final Four Teams at Dartmouth helping the Big Green to the Ivy League championship in 2004.

scouting the ColonialsA challenge 2009-10 schedule finds the Robert Morris Colonials struggling with a 5-13-1 record entering its second-consecutive Pittsburgh College Hockey showcase this weekend. RMU has faced four nationally-ranked opponents eight times and has upset a pair earlier in the season with a 4-1 victory over then-No. 4 Minnesota-Duluth and a 3-1 win at then-No. 6 Wisconsin. Both victories were on the road and the 4-1 victory over Minnesota-Duluth was just the second game of the season for the Colonials. RMU took down the defending National Champion Badgers in the first of a two-game series in Madison, losing the second in overtime 3-2. Following that narrow loss, Robert Morris has struggled in its own College Hockey America conference with losses to Syracuse and then No. 1 Mercyhurst. The team is on a three-game losing streak with its last win on Nov. 28 against Rensselaer at home. The two games against Connecticut are part of a four-game hiatus from CHA action that saw the Colonials drop a pair of decisions on the road to Ohio State. Managing just one goal in each contest, the Buckeyes jumped into the top-10 following a commanding 6-1 win in the series finale on Jan. 3. In consistent play has been the demise of the Colonials, who look to garner their second-consecutive victory at the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase after winning a 2-1 decision over CHA rival Niagara a year ago. It was the first time the women’s ice hockey team joined the men’s squad in the annual classic at Mellon Arena. Six Colonial games have been decided by two or fewer goals with narrow victories over Rensselaer (Nov. 28), Wisconsin (Nov. 6) and Maine (Oct. 23). Robert Morris has been on the bitter end of a trio of two-goal or fewer decisions this season, most receintly falling by two to CHA foe Syracuse on Nov. 21. The Colonials have faced two Hockey East opponents this season with an early 4-3 loss to Boston University (Oct. 9) with the Terriers among the nationally-ranked at the time. Robert Morris swept a two-game series at Maine to cap of the month of October, including a 1-0 victory in the finale.
