In2011,ChumbleyguidedKyleMorseinhissecondAll-Americacampaigninthehammerthrow.TheHighlanderswerenamedall-conferenceinseveneventsonthemen’ssideandeightonthewomen’s.AimeeVeatchenjoyedanotherstandoutseasonunderChumbley’swatchfuleye,breakingtheTop-20intheNCAArank-ingsfortheweightthrow.TheHighlanershadfiveathletesthatwereregionalqualifiersandhadtwoathletesearnAcademicAll-AmericastatusinMattDobsonandSeanDomer.
BreakingschoolrecordshavebeenacommonoccuranceunderChumbley.Atotalof19schoolrecordsonthewomen’ssideand22men’srecordshavebeenec-clipedsince2007,whenChumbleyarrivedinRadford.
Chumbley’s2009-10seasonsawthemen’steamfinishthirdattheBigSouthOutdoorChampionships,thehighestfinishsince2006.Thewomengarneredathird-placeshowingaswellintheBigSouthIndoorChampionships,alsothehighestsince2006.Forhiseffortsonthewomen’sside,Chumbleywasnamed2010BigSouth Conference Women’s Coach of the Year for the indoor season.
The2009seasonwasnodifferentforChumbley,astheHighlanderscarriedovertheirsuccessfromthepreviousyearbyplacingfourthandsixthintheoutdoorchampionshipandsixthandseventhintheindoorchampionships.
Chumbley’sthrowersfaredwellinthe2009seasonastheyplacedinthetop-fiveatboththeindoorandoutdoorchampionships.FreshmanAimeeVeatchrecordedfirst-placefinishesintheweightthrowattheindoorchampionshipsandreachedthepodiumtwiceattheoutdoorchampionships.ChumbleyalsohadhishandsinhelpingLindseyNoebecometheschoolrecord-holderinthepolevault.
Onthemen’sside,hehelpedwiththesteadyimprovementofMattDobsonandnurturedthetalentsofJustinSmith.Duringthe2009season,eachofthesetwoindividualsplacedattheconferencechampionship;DobsonintheweightthrowandSmithinthehammeranddiscus.
Chumbley’stutelagehelpedsixathletesmakeittothenextlevelandqualifyfortheNCAARegionalsandnationalchampionships.ShemeliaBrandon,AimeeVeatchandBritneyWhittakeronthewomen’ssideandRaschadKelso,OlajuwonJonesandthe4x400teamonthemen’sside.KyleMorsereachedthenextlevelof
competitionunderChumbley,ashecompetedintheUSATFNationalChampionships.BrettOlingerandJustinSmithalsoreachedthenextlevelofcompetitionaswellastheycompetedintheUSATFJunior Championships.
Chumbley’sknowledgeandexperienceofthesportsawinstantresultsinthe2008season.Themen’steampostedtheirbest-everfinish,second,attheIndoorChampionships.Individuallythemen’sandwomen’steamsproducedsevenall-conferenceperformers.The2008outdoorseasonsawindividualBigSouthsuccessandanumberofChumbley’sathletesadvancedtotheNCAARegionalmeet.Twowomen,AmyMarshallandShemeliaBrandon,andsevenmen,KyleMorse,NictaeMoore,DanielOseth,RaschadKelso,OlajuwonJones,WayneGoreandGaylonJohnson,allcompetedintheEastRegional.Morse,anathleteunderChumbley’steachingsincehissophomoreyear,claimedtheEastRegionaltitleinthehammerthrowandadvancedtotheNCAAChampionships,wherehebecameRadford’sfifthAll-Americaathlete,andthefirstwithChumbleyatthehelm.
In2007,Chumbleywascalledontofillanewrole,movingintothepositionofinterimProgramDirector.AttheconclusionofRadford’strackandfieldseasonin2007,Chumbleyhadthe“interim“tagliftedfromhistitlewhenhebecametheschool’sdirectoroftrackandfield/crosscountryonJune23.
Onthewomen’sside,hehelpeddevelopthetoptwothrowersinprogram’shistory:TiffanyEvansandMarshall.UnderChumbley’swatchfuleye,EvansrackedupfourconferencechampionshipsandearnedBigSouthFieldPerformeroftheYearhonorsinboththe2007indoorandoutdoorseasons.Marshallwentontopostapairofjavelintitlesofherown(2007-08),andetchedhernameintotheschoolrecordbooks.In2006,Chumbleywashiredasthethrowscoachandinhisfirstseasontherewereinstantresults.FourthrowersmadetheirmarkamongtheverybestintheBigSouthandtheprogram’srecordbook.
BeforelandinginRadford,Chumbley’sbackgroundincludefourdifferentstops.PriortohisarrivaltoRadford,hespentfourseasonsasanassistantatIllinoisState.InhistimewiththeRedbirds,ChumbleyproducedoneUnitedStatesOlympicTrialsqualifier,twoNCAAChampionshipqualifiers,17NCAARegionalqualifiers,eightconferencechampionsand23all-conferenceperformers.
Inaddition,Chumbleyhelpedguidehissquadinsettingfournewschoolrecordsandoneconferencerecord.
PriortoIllinoisState,ChumbleyspentoneyearatMurrayState,wherehehelpedproduceaconferencechampion,17all-conferenceperformersandguidedhisgroupinsettingfourschoolrecords.
Chumbleyearnedhismaster’sinteaching(physicaleducation)fromHastingsCollege(Ky.),wherehecoachedtheNAIAaffiliateschoolinproducingtwoAll-Americans,12nationalqualifiers,onemulti-eventnationalchampionand17newschoolrecords.
Beyondhiscollegiatecoachingresume,ChumbleybringsexperiencefromtheKingoftheRingThrowsFestival,theRedbirdTrackandFieldCamp,theUrbanaCoachesClinic,CentralIllinoisTrackClubandtheChumbley/FisterThrowsCamp.
HistrackandfieldtrainingincludescertificationasaUSATFLevelIIThrowscoach,andfromUSATFLevelIcoachingschool.
In1998,Chumbleyearnedhisbachelor’sdegreeineducationandkinesiologyfromtheUniversityofKentucky.
AnAll-SouthernConferenceperformerinthehammerthrowwhileatMarshallUniversity,Chumbleywasalsoathree-timeKentuckyHighSchoolStateChampion.HeandhiswifeJennifercurrentlyresideinRadfordwiththeirdaughter,Alex.

MarkWhiteentershissixthseasonatRadfordUniversitywhereheoverseessprints,relays,andhurdlesandistherecruitingcoordinator.HeisUSATrack&FieldLevelTwocertifiedincombinedevents.
SinceWhite’sarrivalatRadford,everymen’sschoolrecordinsprints,hurdlesandrelayswiththeexceptionofthree,havebeeneclipsed-bothindoorandout-door.Radfordnolongercompetesintwoofthosethreeevents,55mand55mhurdles.
2010-11sawmanyschoolstandardsshatteredandnumeroustopfinishestallied.White’sathletessurpassedortiedaschoolrecordon10separateoccasionsandhadatotalof96Top5showings.
HurdleswerethestrongeventforRadfordinbothindoorandoutdoorseasons.Whiteguidedtwofreshmen,AmberChurchandChrisDobbins,tostellarfirstyearsofcollegiatecompetition.Churchwonthe60mhurdlesBigSouthtitleandDobbinsfinishedrunner-up,whilebothgarneredBigSouthConferenceIndoorFreshmanoftheYeardistinctions.Theduowouldgoontorecordacombinedthreevictoriesand16Top5showings.
Atotalof39(26men,13women)outdoorand19indoortimes(9men,10women)enteredtheall-timeTop10rankingsatRadfordunderWhite’swatchduringthe2010-11 campaign.
TwoofWhite’sathletes,RaschadKelsoandBrettOlingerqualifiedfortheNCAAEastPreliminary.Theirtoptimeranked48thand38thintheEastRegion,respectively.
During2009-10,WhiteguidedseniorOlajuwonJonestoqualifyforthefirstroundoftheOutdoorNationalChampionshipsinthe400m.Whitealsomentoredthe4x400-meterrelayteam,whichclaimeditsthirdconsecutiveconferencechampionship.
Inthesprints,WhitedirectedRaschadKelsotonewindoorschoolrecordsinthe200and400mandaddedanotherduringoutdoorinthe200m.UnderWhite’sguidance,BryanWallacesetnewschool marks in the 110-meter hurdles (outdoor) and 60-meter hurdles (indoor) and Brett Olinger collected the 400-meter hurdle school standard.
The2009indoorseasonsawnewschoolrecordsbeingshatteredbysprintersineverymeet.Therewerenewschoolrecordssetinthe60meters,60-meterhurdles,200m,and400m.Theoutdoorseasonwasnodifferentasschoolrecordswereeclipsedinthe400mandthe4x400-meterrelayrecordwastied.
UnderWhite’swatch,fourofhissprintersadvancedtotheNCAARegionalandtwoqualifiedforNationals;RaschadKelsointhe200andOlajuwonJonesinthe400m.JonesandKelsowerealsomembersofthe4x400-meterrelayteamthatalsoadvancedtoRegionalcompetition.FreshmanBrettOlingerqualifiedfortheUSTAFJuniorNationalsinthe400-meterhurdles.Onthewomen’sside,WhitehelpedwiththeemergenceofBritneyWhittaker,whocapturedthe800mBigSouthChampionshipOutdoorcrownandadvancedtotheRegional.
The2008seasonunderWhiteimmediateproducedresultsastworelayrecordsfellandthemen’s4x400teamclaimedaBigSouthTitleandaNCAARegionalberth.Themen’steamofWayneGore,Jones,GaylonJohnsonandKelsopostedatimeof3:14.40attheBigSouthChampionshipandamarkof3:12.41attheEastRegional.WhitecametoRadfordafterspendingthepast11yearsteachingandcoachingatMiddlesexCounty,Virginia.Duringthattimehefilledavarietyofathleticcapacities,includingsixyearsastheschool’sathleticdirector.Healsoservedastheheadvarsityfootballcoachandtrack&fieldcoach.
Underhisguidance,theMiddlessexboystrackandfieldprogramwonthreeconsecutiveTidewaterDistrictChampionships,RegionAChampionshipin2006andastaterunner-upplacingin2006.WhitewastabbedtheTidewaterDistrictCoachoftheYearforthreeconsecutiveyears(2000-07)andwasawardedRegionACoachoftheYearin2006.
WhitereceivedhisbachelorsdegreeinhistoryfromnearbyFerrumCollegein1996.HeplayedbaseballforthePanthersforfouryears(1991-95),wherehewasateammateofperennialNationalLeagueAll-StarreliefpitcherBillyWagner.WhitealsoservedasanassistantcoachunderFerrumlegendAbeNaff.
Duringhishighschoolteaching/coachingcareer,Whiteearnedhismaster’sdegreefromOhioUniversityin2006insportsscience/athleticadministration.

SeanBossmanreturnstohisalmamaterforhisfifthseasonasanassistantwiththeRadfordUniversitytrackandfieldprogram,over-seeing all aspects of distance.
Alongsidehisassistantresponsibilities,Bossmanwillbeginhisthirdyearastheheadcoachofthemen’sandwomen’scrosscountryprograms.
Inhisfirstheadcoachingstint,themen’scrosscountrysquadwaspicked ninth in the preseason and surprised everyone at the Big SouthChampionship,finishingfifth-thehighestshowingsince2007.
Bossman’scoachingexperiencemoldedfreshmanBrianGorwitzintotheHighlanders’bestdistancerunnerin2010-11.Hefinished23rdout of 81 competitors at the Championship, paced Radford run-ners in every meet and collected the Big South Men’s Runner of the Week honor for his 19th-place performance at the James Madison Invitational.
FourrunnersalsocompetedintheNCAADivisionICrossCountrySoutheastRegional,withsolidshowingsbyGorwitz,ThomasKeefe,SamKeltnerandNathanTurnerintheirfirst-ever10Kevent.
Onthetrackside,BossmanhelpedGorwitzreachaU.S.JuniorNationalqualifyingtimeandtwocon-secutivevictoriesinthe5000mandalsohisfirst-ever1500mtitle.HealsohadahandinKeltner’sfivenewPR’sthisyearinsixevents.
EachseasonwhileBossmanhasbeencoaching,theHighlandershaveplacedamenandwomen’scrosscountry athlete on the Conference’s All-Academic Team (Brittany Christian – 2008, 2009; Joel Hanlon - 2008;NathanTurner-2009).2010wasnodifferentasSamKeltnerandHannahScherenearnedaspoton the team.
Inhistwoyearsvoluntarilyassistingthedistanceprogram,Bossmanhelpedguideonemen’sall-con-ferenceperformer,DawitLegesse,andatwo-timewomen’sall-conferenceathlete,LoriCrotts,incrosscountry.
InthecourseofhisRadfordcareer,BossmanwasanoutstandingdistanceperformerfortheHighland-ers.Hetwiceearnedall-conferencedistinctionsasapartofthedistancemedleyrelayteamin2006andthe800min2008.Amonghisaccomplishmentsonthetrack,Bossmanalsoexcelledintheclassroom,garnering all-academic honors during the outdoor season in 2008.
BossmanclockedRadford’s2008season-besttimesintheindoor800m(1:55.80)andmile(4:23.56).HealsoheldRadford’sbesttimesinthe800(1:52.48)and1,500m(3:56.50)duringtheoutdoorseason.
Bossmanearnedhisbachelor’sdegreeinexercise,sportandhealtheducationinMayof2008andcur-rently resides in Radford.

JaRodToblerbeginshisfirstseasonasanassistantcoachofRadford’strackandfieldprogram,focusingonjumpsandmulti-events. “WearethrilledtohaveCoachToblerjoinourstaff,”commentedDirectorofTrackandField/CrossCountryBrentChumbley.“IhaveknownJaRodforover10yearsandhisexperienceasacoachandprofessionalathletewillhaveahugeimpactonourteam.Iexpectbigthingsfromourjumpersthisyear!” AsaprofessionaltrackandfieldathletefortheUSAnationalteam,Toblerbringswithhimoverfouryearsexperienceinnationalandinternationalcompetition.Inadditiontohisprofessionalcareer,Toblerhashadsuccessincollegiatecoaching. ToblergothisfirstcoachingpositionatEastTennesseeStatein2006whereheassistedwithrecruiting,planningandadministrationfortheBuccaneers’trackandfieldprogram.Duringhistenure,hehelpedleadthemen’ssquadtoindoorandoutdoorconferencetitles. AfteroneseasonwiththeJohnsonCity,Tenn.institution,Tobler’snextcoachingmoveledhimtoEasternIllinoisin2007.Whilethere,Toblercoachedthemen’sandwomen’ssquadstosixleaguechampionships.WhencombininghistwocoachingstopsatETSUandEIU,Toblerhascoachedmultipleconferencechampionshipteams,individualconferencechampions,aswellasmultipleregionalqualifiers. Hissuccessincoachingcarriedoverintohisprofessionalcareer.Duringthe2008campaign,Toblercameoutofretirementandfinishedsixthatthe2008USAOlympicTrialsinthelongjump.ThatlevelofsuccessledToblertoleaveEasternIllinoisin2010topursueaprofessionalcareer. HetrainedattheOlympicTrainingCenterinChulaVista,Calif.from2010-11.Hishardworkledhimtoasecond-placefinishatthe2011IndoorChampionships;andmorerecently,aseventh-placefinishatthisyear’sUSAOlympicTrials. “Bygettingbackintocoachingallowsmetocombinemyprofessionalandcoachingexperiencetohelpdevelopthestudent-athletesatRadfordUniversity,”ex-
pressedTobler.“Iamexcitedtobeapartofaprogramthathashighvaluesandisfocusedonwhatisbestfortheirstudent-athletes.” A2004graduateofIllinoisStatewithabachelor’sdegreeintelecommunicationsmanagement,isLevelIcertifiedbytheUnitedStatesofAmericaTrackandField(USATF).

RADFORDThe Big South Conference Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college
athletics,activelypursuingexcellenceonthefieldofplayandintheclassroom.TheLeague’sgrowingpres-enceasanNCAADivisionIathleticconferenceisevidentbyathleticaccomplishmentsonthenationalstage,innovativemarketingandmediapartnerships,increasedtelevisionpackages,andqualityathleticcompeti-tionwhileintentionallyfosteringtheacademic,personal,social,athleticandleadershipdevelopmentofeachstudent-athlete.ThishasevolvedintotheConference’smissionof“DevelopingLeadersThroughAthletics.”The2012-13academicyearfeaturestheBigSouth’slargestmembership(12)andsponsoredsports(19)inits29yearsofexistence.
TheBigSouthConferencewasformedonAugust21,1983,whenCharlestonSouthern(thenBaptistCol-lege)AthleticDirectorHowardBagwellandAugustaPresidentGeorgeChristenberrybeganrecruitingmembersintotheBigSouth,receivinginitialcommitmentsfromAugusta,CharlestonSouthern,Campbell,CoastalCaro-linaandWinthrop.Onemonthlater,Dr.EdwardM.SingletonwasselectedastheLeague’sfirstCommissionerandcontinuedtosolicitnewmembers.HiseffortsledtotheadditionsofArmstrongState,RadfordandUNCAsheville,givingtheBigSouthmorethantherequiredsixmemberstoconstituteanofficialconference.TheBigSouth’sfirstyearofcompetitionwasintheFallof1984,andinSeptember1986,theBigSouthConferencewasgrantedfull-fledgedNCAADivisionIstatus.
DuringitsinfancyandpriortosecuringautomaticbidstoNCAAChampionships,theBigSouthmadeearlystridesinearningat-largeberthsinseveralnationalpostseasonevents,includingvolleyball,women’sbasket-ballandwomen’sgolf.In1989,GeorgeF.“Buddy”SasserreplacedtheretiringDr.SingletonasCommissioner,andin1990,theLeaguereceiveditsfirstautomaticbid–receivinganautomaticqualifiertotheNCAABaseballChampionship.UnderSasser’ssevenyearsofleadership,theConferenceimplementeditspublicrelationsandcomplianceprograms,andintroduceditsfirst-evermen’sbasketballtelevisionpackage,featuringtheBigSouthcompetingamongsomeofthefinestteamsinthenation.
InAugust1996,KyleB.KallanderreplacedSasserastheLeague’sthirdCommissioner,andinhis16yearsatthehelmoftheBigSouth,KallanderhasbeeninstrumentalinaggressivelypromotingtheConferencetonewheights.TheConferencehasenjoyedrecordlevelsinmarketingrevenueduringhistenure,hehasbroughttelevisioncoveragetoBigSouthwomen’sbasketball,baseball,softballandmen’ssoccerforthefirsttimeinConferencehistory,aswellasincreasednationaltelevisionexposuretotheLeagueasawholethroughaggressiveanduniquetelevisionpackages.
UnderKallander’sleadership,theBigSouthdevelopedandinitiateditsfirstlong-rangestrategicplan,re-affirmingtheLeague’svisionasadistinctiveathleticConferencecommittedtothequalityofinstitutionallifethroughathleticcompetition.Healsospearheadedtheeffortstoaddfootballasachampionshipsport,whichcametofruitionin2002,andoversawtheadditionsofmen’sandwomen’sindoortrack&fieldin1997.TheConference’s19thchampionshipsport--women’slacrosse,beginsplaythisseasonwitheightmembers.Atthesametime,KallanderhassolidifiedConferencemembership,asanall-timehigh12memberinstitutionscomprisethe29-yearoldLeague.RecentadditionsincludeHighPoint,Gardner-Webb,PresbyterianCollegeandLongwood,plusthereturnofchartermemberCampbellUniversity.Kallander’slongrangevisionhasalsoincludedtechnologicaladvancements,astheConferenceintroduceditsfirstlivevideostreamingeventin2005andhassinceexpandeditsvideoofferingstomorethan700eventsannuallythroughapartnershipwiththememberinstitutions,aswellasthecreationofseveralonlineandsocialmediaplatforms.
Inthelast15yearsalone,theBigSouthConferencehasexperiencedmonumentalgrowthandsuccessinnearlyeverysport.Duringthistime,theConferencehashadanindividualNationalChampionsixtimes,hashadmorethan280All-Americans,hasreachedthe“Sweet16”inmen’ssoccer,women’sbasketballandbase-ball,hasreceivednationalTop25rankingsinfootball,men’ssoccer,men’sbasketball,women’sbasketball,baseball,men’soutdoortrack&field,andmen’sgolf,hadanindividualselectedtoplayintheNCAASinglesChampionshipseventimesinadditiontothefirstmen’stennisdoublesat-largeselection,hadthefirstwomen’sgolfprogramadvancetothenationalfinals,hadtheNo.1rankedmen’sgolferinthecountry,hadthenation’stopscoringmen’sbasketballteamfiveconsecutiveyearsaswellasthenationalmen’sbasketballscoringleadertwice,receivedanat-largeplayoffberthintheFootballChampionshipSubdivisionin2006,hashadsixNFLDraftpicks,andhashadtwoinstitutionsfinishinthetop10intheNCAAMen’sGolfChampionships--includingtheConference’shighest-everteamfinishinanNCAAevent(fifthin2007).
In2006-07,theBigSouthwastheonlyConferencenationwidetohaveanat-largeparticipantinthefootballplayoffs(CoastalCarolina),ateamintheSecondRoundoftheNCAAMen’sBasketballTournament(Winthrop)andaNo.1seedintheNCAABaseballRegionals(CoastalCarolina).Infact,CoastalCarolina’sbaseballprogramhasbeenaNo.1seedfouroutofthelasteightyears--includinganationalseedforthefirsttimein2010,whiletheChanticleers’FCSplayoffberthin2006cameinjustthefifth-yearoftheBigSouth’sfootballexistence.The2009-10seasonsawLiberty’sSamChelangawintwoNCAANationalChampionships(crosscountry,10,000-meterrun);CoastalCarolina’sbaseballteamreachtheSuperRegionalsforthesecondtimeinthreeyearsaswellasbeingrankedNo.1inthenationalRPIandashighasNo.3inthenationalpolls;
andthreewomen’sbasketballteamsreachthepostseasonforthefirsttimeinConferencehistory.In2010-11,ChelangawontwomoreNCAANationalChampionships(crosscountry,outdoor5,000-meterrun),theBigSouthhaditsfirstautomaticbidrecipientinfootball(CoastalCarolina),UNCAshevillereachedtheSecondRoundoftheNCAAMen’sBasketballTournament,CoastalCarolina’swomen’sgolfteamwasthefirstinCon-ferencehistorytoadvancetotheNCAAChampionshipoutofRegionalplay,andaLeague-record18baseballplayersweredraftedinthe2011MLBFirst-YearPlayerDraft.
Thispastseason,theBigSouthhadarecord41student-athletesearnAll-Americadistinction,whilean-other10werenamedAcademicAll-Americans.TheConferencealsowonitsfirstfootballplayoffgame(StonyBrook),hadthenationalwomen’sbasketballRookieCoachoftheYear,hadtwomen’ssoccerteamsreachtheNCAATournamentforthefirsttimeinadecade(CoastalCarolina,Liberty),andhadarecordfiveindividualsselectedfortheNCAAMen’sGolfRegionals--themostofanyDivisionIconferencein2011-12.Inaddition,Libertywasthefirstmen’sgolfteaminConferencehistorytowinanNCAARegional,andtheFlameswentontofinish10thatthenationalevent.
Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. CoastalCarolina’sAmberCampbellmadetheU.S.OlympicTeamin2008and2012,andwasoneoffiveformerBigSouthathletestocompeteinthe2008Games;VMI’sReggieWilliamsreachedtheNBAwiththeGoldenStateWarriorsin2010,UNCAsheville’sTyWiggintonwasnamedanAmericanLeagueAll-Starin2010,andCoastalCarolina’sDustinJohnsonhaswonsixPGAToureventssincedepartingtheBigSouthConferencein2007.ThreeformerBigSouthbaseballplayersmadetheirmajorleaguedebutsin2012,whileAveryWarleybecamethethirdBigSouthwomen’sbasketballplayertoplayintheWNBA.
TheConference’stagline,“DevelopingLeadersThroughAthletics”wasunveiledin2008-09inconjunc-tionwiththeConference’s25thAnniversary.TheLeaguealsohonoreditsheritagewiththeTop25“BestoftheBest”momentsinLeaguehistoryfrom1983-2008,withLibertyUniversity’s10-yearwomen’sbasketballchampionshiprunfrom1996-2007beingcrownedtheNo.1momentintheBigSouth’sfirst25years.TheCon-ference’son-fieldaccomplishmentshavebeenduplicatedintheclassroom.Annually,morethan40percentofConference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 100 Academic All-Americans in its 28 years of existence.Furthermore,theBigSouthhasrecordeddoublefiguretotalsinNCAAPublicRecognitionAwardsfor APR progress the last three years.

2007,RadfordnativeRobertLineburghashelpedusherinaneweraofHighlanderathletics,markedbyunprecedentedon-andoff-fieldimprovementsandsuccesses.Inhisshorttimewiththedepartment,Lineburghasbeenthecatalystforanumberof
changes, particularly in areas such as facilities, personnel and strategic planning.HismostvisibleinfluencestodatehavebeenontheDedmonCenterandRadford
University’snew700-seatbaseballstadium.Beginninginthespringof2008,theDedmonCenter,thecenterpieceofHighlander
athletics,underwenttransformationstothearena,includinganewsteel-supportedroof,anewbasketballfloor,renovatedathleticoffices,anew-looknatatorium,andimprovedathletic locker, training, and medical facilities.AlongwiththeinitialupgradestotheDedmonCenter,animprovedstate-of-the-art
strengthandconditioningroom,newticketofficeandLearningEnhancementCenter(LEC),whichhousesstudent-athleteacademicsupport,werecompleted/addedin2009.In2010,facilityupgradesincludedanewhigh-techvideoboard/soundsystemtothe
DedmonCenteraswellasanewplayingsurface/irrigationsystemanddugoutstotheRadfordUniversityBaseballField.Thispastspring,RadfordtransformeditsbaseballprograminAprilof2011byopen-
ingabrand-newstadiumandmakingthefirstsignificantadjustmenttoitshomeparksinceopeningin1986.Forthefirsttimeever,theHighlandershavethecapabilitytohostnightgames.Thestadiumfeatureslightingstandardsthatmeettherequirementsof NCAA Regional Tournament host sites.InJune,RobertLineburgintroducedMikeJonesasRadfordUniversity’s7thhead

nisandsoftballBigSouthregularseasontitlein2009-10.MickeyDean’ssoftballteamwentontowintheirsecondstraightconferencetournamentcrownbeforeadvancingtotheAthens,GeorgiaRegionalfinalwithtwomoreNCAATournamentvictories.Thesuccessesonthefieldcontinuedin2010-11asRadfordcapturedthreemoreBig
Southtitles.Women’ssoccerandsoftballclaimedregularseasoncrowns,whilemen’stennisadvancedtotheNCAATournamentwiththeirfourthleaguetournamentchampi-onshipinfiveyears.Alongwiththeircompetitivesuccess,theHighlandershavedefinedthetruemeaning
of“student-athlete”duringLineburg’stenure.Forthesecondconsecutiveyear,RafordledallBigSouthinstitutionsbyplacing58.3percentofitsstudent-athletesonthecon-ference’sPresidentialHonorRoll.In2008-09,theHighlandershad57.9percentoftheirstudents on the list.Heandhisstaffhavealsobeenresponsibleforcreatingafive-yearstrategicplanfor
theRadfordathleticdepartmentandbuildinganathleticsfacilitiesmasterplan.Addi-tionalachievementsincludeusheringinanewathleticsInternetsite(RadfordAthletics.com),andhelpingimplementanewticketsystem(TicketReturn).Lineburgandhisstaffhavealsohostedtop-levelcompetition,withfiveBigSouthchampionshipstakingplaceontheRadfordcampusfrom2008-11(men’sbasketball,track&field,softball,men’stennisandvolleyball).InadditiontomakinganimpactonRadfordathletics,Lineburgisalsoinvolvedina
numberofdifferentorganizationsandcommittees.HeisthechairmanoftheBigSouthConferenceSubcommitteeonBasketballImprovement,amemberoftheBigSouthad-hocCommitteeonBasketballIssues,amemberoftheselectioncommitteetoselectRadfordUniversity’sVicePresidentforAdvancement,andmostrecently,wasselectedtoserveontheNCAADivisionIMen’sBasketballIssuesCommitteePriortobecomingRadford’sthirdDirectorofAthletics,Lineburg’scorporateknowl-
edgewasgroomedasamarketingassociatewithPelotonRealEstatePartnersinDal-las,Texas.Alongwithhisbusinessexperience,Lineburgspent15seasonsasacollegebasket-
ballcoach,includingtimeasSouthernMethodist’s(Dallas,Texas)interimheadcoach.PriortoservingastheMustangsinterimheadcoach,LineburgspenteightyearsasanassistantcoachatSMU.Followinghisinterimtenure,heservedtwomoreseasonsasan assistant coach at Southern Methodist.Lineburg’scoachingresumealsoincludesassistantcoachingpositionswiththemen’s
basketballprogramsatJamesMadisonUniversityandEmory&HenryCollege,aswellaswiththeDallasMaverickssummerleagueteam.HiscoachingexperiencealsotookhimthroughtheBigSouth,ashespenttimeonthesidelineatUNCGreensboro.A1991graduateofRoanokeCollege,Lineburgstartedhiscollegiatebasketballca-
reerasaRadfordHighlander,wherehewasatwo-yearlettermanbeforetransferringtonearbyRoanokeCollegetoplayhisfinaltwoyears.HeearnedhisBachelor’sDegreeinpoliticalsciencewithaminorinhistory.In1995,
hereceivedaMaster’sDegreeineducationfromVirginiaTech,wherehewasalsoagraduateassistantonthemen’sbasketballstaff.“Inadditiontobeingagoodcandidate,RobertisaRadfordnative,somethingthatwill

A component that is vital to Radford student-athletes is the strengthandconditioningprogramdirectedbyStrengthandConditioning Coach Michael Shumaker.
HighlanderAthleticshaslongbeenrecognizedasoneoftheleaders among Mid-Atlantic schools in its conditioning and strengthtraining.Ithasbeenaninstrumentalpartinthesuc-cessofRadfordUniversitysportsthroughtheyears.Underthedirection of Shumaker and Assistant Strength and Condition-ing coaches Tim Ridley and Michele Huffman, the program is designed to help each student-athlete reach his or her full potential in their respective sport.
EachRadfordUniversitystudent-athletehasstrengthandconditioningprogramsuniquetotheirgoalsasaplayer.Thisprogram,developedbyShumaker,helpsprepareRadfordstudent-athletes for the long and rigorous in-season schedule.

Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium
PatrickD.CuppMemorialStadiumwascompletedin2003andquicklybecameoneofthepremiersoccerandtrackandfieldstadiums in the Southeast.
The largest soccer/track facility in the Big South Conference, Cupp Stadium has seating for 5,000 spectators. Four large locker rooms, an on-site athletic training room, and a dedi-cated laundry room highlight the amenities for student-athletes and teams.
Thefacilityalsoincludesalarge,fullyfunctionalpressboxwithdedicatedstorageandrestrooms.Standardphonelineswirelessandhard-wiredinternetconnectionswereinstalledtoserveallpossiblemedianeeds.Inadditionthepressboxhousesthestadiumsleadingedgescoreboardcontrolsandsound system.
Inadditiontothegame-dayamenities,CuppStadiumservestheday-to-dayneedsofthesoccerandtrackandfieldpro-grams,allofwhichhaveofficesinsidethecomplex.Thesta-diumalsoincorporatesofficesforRU’sfieldhockey,men’sandwomen’stennisandgolfprograms.
ThesoccersurfaceisaBermudablendnaturalgrassfield.Astate-of-the-artdrainagesystemwasrecentlyaddedtoas-sistinkeepingthefieldintopshapeyear-round.Thetrackisa synthetic surface divided into eight lanes. The stadium also includes jumping and vaulting pits.
