The College of Education and Human Development has a total of 126 tenured and tenure-track faculty; of those, 10 are newly hired tenure-track faculty and nine are newly hired clinical faculty. The 2007-2008 new hires reflect the hard and diligent work of search committees and a strong commitment to diversity in the college. We have new faculty members who are from Kenya, China, and Korea as well as various locations around the United States. New faculty were awarded terminal degrees from several research extensive universities including the University of Georgia, Louisiana State University, Arizona State University, University of Iowa, and the University of Minnesota. These new hires also bring a diversity of disciplines studied, which include human resource development, public school administration, school psychology, exercise science, health disparities, bilingual/ESL education, mathematics education, and counseling psychology.

Jamilia BlakeAssistant Professor

With a passion for volunteerism and community service, Jamilia Blake’s research interests lie in the assessment, consultation and intervention within the area of school psychology. In addition, she is board certified in school crisis response from the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress.

Blake received her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate from The University of Georgia.

Anita Sohn McCormick

Clinical Assistant Professor

A licensed specialist in school psychology, Anita Sohn McCormick has been a visiting assistant professor with the educational psychology department since 2006. Now, as a clinical assistant professor in the department, she will focus her research efforts on the self-efficacy and leadership of children and adolescents in a variety of settings.

McCormick received her bachelor’s from the Instituto Technologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Mexico, her master’s from Trinity University in San Antonio and her doctorate from Texas A&M University.

Miranda Nava- Walichowski

Clinical Assistant Professor

Miranda Nava-Walichowski is not only passionate about bilingual education, but also about helping students both in and out of the classroom. Having served as an assistant lecturer and field placement coordinator for the bilingual education program in the college, Nava-Walichowski also volunteers her time to serve as co-advisor for the undergraduate bilingual education student organization.

Nava-Walichowski will be teaching several bilingual education classes in addition to her research in English as a second language and bilingual education.

Nava-Walichowski received her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate from Texas A&M University.

Having taught numerous courses in counseling and educational psychology such as career counseling and multicultural counseling along with his certification as a licensed psychologist in California and Indiana, Charles Ridley brings vast experience to his field.

Ridley received his bachelor’s from Taylor University in Indiana, his master’s from Ball State University in Indiana and his doctorate from the University of Minnesota.

Fuhui TongAssistant Professor

In a world where the population is increasingly becoming bilingual, Fuhui Tong is addressing the language development and language development achievement in English language learners.

As an Aggie, I am fascinated by the Aggie culture and its embracement of diversity,” Tong said. “The rigorous research agenda going on in my department, college and the university has inspired me, and the friendliness of people has made me feel at home. To study and work on such a wonderful campus is my dream, and I am happy that this dream has finally come true!”

Tong received her bachelor’s and master’s from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China and her doctorate from Texas A&M University.

As an assistant professor, Myeongsun Yoon brings valuable experience to the college in quantitative psychology.

Yoon’s research interests include psychometrics, categorical data analysis and structural equation modeling with current research focusing on measurement invariance across groups.

Yoon received her bachelor’s from Seoul National University and her master’s and doctorate from Arizona State University. She also has received a certificate in statistics from Arizona State University.

Lupe GuerreroClinical Assistant Professor

Lupe Guerrero has dedicated her professional life to PK-16 leadership and service on behalf of students and their families in Texas and Colorado. A Harvard graduate, she brings experience in mid-management, bilingual education and early childhood education to the college.

She is active in community outreach programs, having served on numerous education committees, youth advocacy groups and professional associations during her many years as a bilingual education teacher. Guerrero is especially proud of the many dedicated prospective leaders, teachers and students she has mentored and nurtured to reach their highest dreams and potential.

For over a decade, Guerrero has served as an educational consultant to successful school district and university grant writing teams and assists the Texas Education Agency and the U. S. Department of Education in grant reviews.

Guerrero received her bachelor’s from Texas Women’s University, her master’s from Southern Methodist University and her doctorate from Harvard University.

Renown for his international work in the field of human resource development (HRD), Gary McLean comes from Minnesota and brings his expertise in and knowledge of HRD to our college. He has taught courses in international human resource development and organization development, has been a frequent speaker and has written over 200 journal articles and 20 textbooks.

McLean has been an independent consultant, primarily in training, organization development, and quality transformation for over 35 years, serving as principal consultant with McLean Global Consulting, Inc. and has received numerous recognitions for his teaching, research and service.

McLean will be spending most of his time in Saudi Arabia working with our international HRD certificate program. He is already collaborating with countries such as Taiwan, Korea, Mexico and St. Lucia to create similar programs.

When asked why he decided to come here, he responded, “I came here because this program is the number one program in the nation. Texas A&M is now the future in HRD.”

McLean earned his doctorate from Columbia University.

Frederick NafukhoAssociate Professor

Frederick Nafukho has had worldwide experience in the field of human resource development (HRD). From teaching at Moi University in Kenya to the University of Arkansas to Texas A&M University, Nafukho brings over 16 years of expertise in human resource development higher education.

Having been a proceedings editor of the refereed proceedings of the Academy of Human Resource Development for two consecutive years, I know that faculty and graduate students from the HRD program at Texas A&M have led the Academy of Human Resource Development in the number of refereed publications,” he said. “It is an honor for me to join such an outstanding program in the nation.”

His primary area of research has been aligned with investment in human capital, enrollment modeling and prediction in higher education, E-learning, learning organization and performance improvement.

Nafukho received his bachelor’s and master’s from Kenyatta University in Kenya and his doctorate from Louisiana State University.

Judy SandlinClinical Assistant Professor

American Red Cross certified in six safety areas, Judy Sandlin brings a passion for health, sport safety, statistics and research to her position at Texas A&M. Her research interests lie in human resource statistics and research, physical education, health and behavior as well as the psychology behind them.

Sandlin received her bachelor’s from Louisiana Tech University, her master’s from Baylor University and her doctorate from Texas A&M University.

Terah Venzant Chambers’ research interests include education policy, within-school segregation, race and ethnicity in education, urban education, multicultural identity development and historical construction of multiracial identity.

Chambers received her bachelor’s from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and her master’s and doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Jia WangAssistant Professor

Coming to us from Fort Myers, Florida, Jia Wang brings with her a vast knowledge of human resource development (HRD). Her research interests include international HRD, management development, organizational behavior and development, performance analysis and improvement, HRD intervention assessment and evaluation, qualitative research methods and HRD theory building research.

Wang received her bachelor’s from Sichuan International Studies University in China, her M.B.A. from Aston University in the United Kingdom and her master’s and doctorate from The University of Georgia.

Pamela DoughtyClinical Assistant Professor

Pamela Doughty’s interests lie in examining how aging affects the body. She has written several publications on the subject and has evaluated several programs addressing aging and its side effects.

Doughty received her bachelor’s from Mesa State College in Colorado, her master’s from Baylor University, her doctorate from Texas Women’s University and is a Certified Health Education Specialist.

Michael MassettAssistant Professor

Having worked as a research professor in cardiovascular research since 2002, Michael Massett brings years of research experience in exercise training and performance to his position at Texas A&M.

He currently has three ongoing research projects and serves as principal investigator of one of these projects. He also has completed two research projects with the American Heart Association, the National Institutes of Health and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Massett received his bachelor’s from Syracuse University, his master’s from the University of Arizona and his doctorate from the University of Iowa.

Michael SandlinClinical Associate Professor

A certified EMT paramedic, Michael Sandlin has taught classes in exercise physiology, sport psychology, measurement and evaluation, organization and administration, physical education, personal health and various other sport and activity classes.

His research interests include sport safety and training, and health outreach and prevention education.

Sandlin received his bachelor’s from the University of West Alabama, his master’s from the University of Arkansas and his doctorate from Texas A&M University.

Mary Shaw-Ridley has had extensive leadership in planning and implementing community health programs, school curricula, teacher staff development activities, adopt-a-school programs and parent/community education programs designed to enhance the education and health promotion programs in public schools promoting community health. Her research has focused on understanding factors that mediate and moderate health behaviors of African-American women and their families.

She received her bachelor’s from the University of Southern California, her master’s from the University of Maryland-College Park, her doctorate from Texas Woman’s University and has completed additional training at the University of Pittsburgh and the National Public Health Leadership Institute.

Michael ThorntonClinical Assistant Professor

Michael Thornton is no stranger to the health and kinesiology department. As camp supervisor of Deerfoot Youth Camp and a lecturer for the Physical Education Activities Program, he is making the move from lecturer to clinical assistant professor within the department.

His professional interests include sport administration, health education, coaching, physical education and sport officiating.

Thornton received his bachelor’s and his master’s from Northwestern State University in Louisiana and his doctorate from Texas A&M University.

Mary Margaret Capraro has been teaching Texas A&M University students since 2000 where she has been both a clinical assistant and clinical associate professor. She now becomes an assistant professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture to continue her commitment to teaching Aggie students.

I am very excited about my new position and the role I will play in teaching graduate students. I see myself as an elementary mathematics expert and feel this is a missing niche within the mathematics education faculty at Texas A&M,” she said. “I see myself playing an important role in conducting research and recruiting master of science/master of education students. I hope to develop an on-line degree program with an emphasis in mathematics for elementary teachers helping to fill the void of elementary mathematics specialists in public schools across Texas and the United States.”

Capraro received her bachelor’s from Barry University in Miami, Florida, her master’s from the University of Miami and her doctorate from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Before her appointment as clinical assistant professor for the Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture, Robin Rackley was a teaching assistant for educational psychology then served concurrently as a visiting assistant professor for educational psychology and lecturer for teaching, learning and culture.

The main draw for me to come to the university was] the development of the new Early Childhood Program in the College of Education,” Rackley said.
