To be on the Dean’s ListThe Faculty is proud of the academic achievements of BCom students and students with an outstanding academic record qualify for the Dean’s List. Such students were recently awarded by the Dean with certificates, gift vouchers and a cocktail function.

Bursaries galore! The JSE offers bursaries to students who are academically excellent, have leadership potential and who study Financial Management, Economics, Investment Management, Accounting Sciences or Informatics.

A warm first year welcomeAs is customary of the Department of Marketing and Communication Management, an attempt is always made to impress our first years during the first official meeting. Past presentations took themes from Grease, Casino Royal, etc. The 2010 theme was inspired by the new Katy Perry song, ‘Firework’. The message to the new first years was, as Katy says, to let their colours burst, and as such to believe in themselves.

Sneakers with a difference(Below) As part of their training, BCom (Entrepreneurship) and BCom (Business Management) students had to do a project where they used the theoretical background that they receive in class and their own experience to create and make shoes from recycled material.

Results celebratedAcademic trainees celebrated the results of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) Qualifying Examination Part 1 (QE 1). UP achieved a pass rate of 97% and all ten the academic trainees at UP passed the exam.

Celebration!Proud students, their families and staff celebrated together when 46 Thuthuka students graduated and received the BCom (Accounting Sciences) degree – the first step towards becoming a Chartered Accountant.

Learning through FacebookFacebook is a very powerful tool. Why not incorporate it into the teaching environment? The Department of Taxation decided to do just that! The large amount of students registered for Taxation makes it difficult to personally interact with them, and Facebook was the ideal platform to create this personal interaction with the students.

A visit to Merc(Left) The Business Manage-ment honours class visited the Mercedes-Benz spare part facility and Caterpillar’s Johan-nesburg Distribution Centre in Isando recently as part of the module Integrated Logistics Management.

A SA Netball Protea in the Faculty(Right) Vanes-Mari du Toit is a second year BCom (Human Resource Man-agement) student at Tuks.

During 2011 she was chosen for the SA Protea Netball Team. She enjoys her course at Tuks tremen-dously and dreams of one day combining sport with industrial psychology.

Over the past decade, a great deal of attention has been given to the effective functioning of organisations. With this in mind, the BCom(Communication Management) degree course equips students with the knowledge and skills required to address communication issues that are both internal and external to the organisation. Stakeholder groups demand increasingly more meaningful communication from organisations and the relationships with these groups should be managed pro-actively. Furthermore, diversity in developing countries dictates that different approaches should be used in communication management. These are some of the issues that are addressed by this degree course. The minimum period of study for BCom(Communication Management) is three years of full-time study.
