ABOUT OLIVET COLLEGE

Page 3: 2006 Olivet College Women's Soccer

The Olivet College women’s soccer team is hopeful that it will havea winning season in 2006. The optimism comes from the fact that theComets return 16 letterwinners, including 10 starters from last year’steam. In 2005, Olivet recorded an 8-10-1 overall record.

Leading the way for the Comets are senior captains Ann MarieKeisic (Sterling Heights/Warren Cousino), Kelli McKee (Canton) andStacey Stickney (St. Joseph). McKee is a midfielder, while Keisic andStickney are defenders.

Stickney, a three-time All-Michigan Intercollegiate AthleticAssociation (MIAA) selection, is expected to be the leader of the defenseand also has the ability to score goals. Last year, she tallied eight points(three goals and two assists). In three seasons at Olivet, she has 23 goalsand nine assists for 55 points.

“Our captains have done a terrific job,” said fifth-year Head CoachHans Morgan. “Ann Marie and Kelli were our captains last year, so theyhave continued to do a fine job with leadership. The surprise has beenStacey, as she has really accepted the challenge of being a captain.”

Seniors Kris Dickinson (Cadillac) and Heather Wolf (Marshall),junior Natalie Lopez (Holland/West Ottawa) and sophomore KellieO’Dowd (Jackson) are also returning midfielders. Juniors ShannahFisher (Delton/Delton Kellogg) and Anna Mueller (Battle Creek/Pennfield) and sophomore Megan Reardon (Macomb/Chippewa Valley)are back as forwards. Fisher, who earned 2005 second-team All-MIAAhonors, tallied a team-high nine goals to go along with three assists for 21points last year. Reardon was second in goals (five) and points (11).Mueller finished with seven points.

“Kris is definitely in the mix for a starting spot,” stated Morgan.“Heather is very skillful and a great attacking player. Natalie brings a lotof fight and intensity to the game. I am expecting Kellie to be the midfieldgeneral and the type of player who you notice right away.

“Shannah is our fastest player and has a great enthusiasm for thegame. Anna is in the best shape of her life and has done a great job getting

ready for the season. Megan is going to see limited action because of anankle injury.”

Other returning letterwinners on defense include senior WagnerMathews (Benton Harbor/St. Joseph), junior Jenny Aldridge (ImlayCity) and sophomores Cori Barrera (East Lansing) and Katie Wolf(Marshall).

“Wagner is our best defender and has the ability to shut down ouropponent’s best player ,” Morgan says. “Jenny is another player that isin great shape. Cori and Katie had great freshman seasons. They are alsogoing to be able to contribute to our attack.”

Off-season surgery has forced junior Breanna Bath-Simonsen(Bath) to move from the starting goalkeeper position to a spot in themidfield. With this move, freshman Shane Brady (Battle Creek/Central)has earned the starting job in goal.

“Bre is expected to contribute based surely on her work ethic,” saidMorgan. “She also brings a competitiveness that will help push the teamforward. Shane has a ton of potential and is working hard to get better.”

Other recruits to keep an eye on are Ashley Barron (Montrose/Hill-McCloy) and Jenn Weaks (Gowen/Cedar Springs). Barron is thetop recruit as she is a three-time All-Michigan High School Soccer CoachesAssociation (MHSSCA) pick.

“With the talent that we have back, most of our recruits are going tosee playing time on the junior varsity time,” Morgan stated. “However,Ashley has earned her spot on the varsity team. Jenn is going to be aplayer that platoons between the varsity and JV team.”

The MIAA schedule has undergone changes for the 2006 season.Every school will play each team once during the regular season, followedby a single elimination tournament. The winner of the tournament willreceive the MIAA’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division III NationalChampionships.

“I like the new format of the MIAA schedule,” says Morgan. “Itallows every game to be meaningful because you are playing for seedingin the tournament.”

Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic AssociationThe Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)

is America’s oldest collegiate athletic conference. The 2006-07 school year marks the 119th consecutive year

of operation for the NCAA Division III affiliated conference. The MIAA was founded March 24, 1888. From thevery beginning, the MIAA has conducted full-seasonchampionships in multiple sports. There have beenchanges in some of the sports (bicycle racing andIndian club juggling have long since disappeared, andbasketball did not even exist in 1888), but thesechanges have served to develop the MIAA into oneof America’s finest NCAA Division III conferences, today offering 18 sports for men and women.

The MIAA’s continuity is noteworthy. Of the 12 schoolsthat have had full membership, eight are still members — Adrian,Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet and Saint Mary’s.Significantly, not one of these eight colleges has ever belongedto any other formal league. Albion and Olivet were chartermembers although Albion is the only member to hold continuousmembership. Ex-members are Michigan State University

(1888-1907), Eastern Michigan University (1892-1926), HillsdaleCollege (1888-1960), and Defiance College (1997-2000).

The MIAA’s membership list went unchanged from 1954until 1997 when Defiance College of Ohio and Saint Mary’s College

of Indiana were invited to join. It also marked the firsttime that the league added members outside the Stateof Michigan. The league stipulated, however, that thename of the conference would not change. Theinaugural year of current members are: Adrian (1908),Albion (1888), Alma (1902), Calvin (1953), Hope (1926),Kalamazoo (1896), Olivet (1888), and SaintMary’s (1997).

The MIAA marked a historic note in 2002 when the leagueaccepted Wisconsin Lutheran College of Milwaukee as anassociate member for the purpose of competing in football.Wisconsin Lutheran announced in 2005 that it will leave theMIAA after the 2007 season to join another conference.

Tri-State University became a conference member in 2004-05upon its acceptance as a provisional NCAA member.
