Lockerroom Renovations

GEORGIA COLLEGE SOCCER 2009

11

In an effort to make Georgia College more of a home for Bobcatsoccer players, the lockerroom at West Campus got a much-needed facelift in the summer of 2008.

The facility has a much softer look, and is more inviting with theaddition of couches and other more home-style furniture.

Bobcat futbollers can also enjoy their own sit-in style locker, complete with attractive name-plate.

“Renovating this lockerroom was one of the first things Iwanted to take care of on my arrival,” said head coach JuanPablo Favero. “A lockerroom should serve as a secondhome for a student-athlete, and where the facility was atwhen I came here was in need of a makeover.”

“What was once a rarely-used attribute of this West Campusfacility will now be the central location for Bobcat soccer, and I’dlike to deeply thank everyone involved in the project’s success.”

"We'll need to build onthat defensive success from lastyear," he added. "The defense willbe much more tested so we can'toverlook our defensive effort thisseason. We're going to have a lotmore 1-0 and 2-1 matches this sea-son than 5-0 or 6-1."

It's the tight contests thatare the focus in this year's presea-son. The reality is such that one-goal games will be more the normthis year, and those tight, toughgames are often won by a few criti-cal moments. The squad will needto be "mentally tough" to come outon top of those critical moments.

"Thankfully we're focusingon a shared responsibility to put the ball in the net this year. Wehave enough talent up front to expect the scoring to be takencare of. It's easier to defend a one-dimensional team, and that'sjust not us this year. Scoring can come from nearly anyone onthe field."

When asked about the difficult schedule, Favero said "wecould win more, we could lose more" but he's confident hissquad will respond well and build on last season's success.

"The coaching staff noticed last year that the team playedtheir best soccer against the tougher opponents," he said. "Thata sign to us that we're ready for the next step. The experienceand confidence gained from last year is key to the goal of win-ning National Championships. Every good result against atough team gives us that much more to build upon."

2008 helped each member of this team develop a "belief inself and each other" so thatthe team can buy into theplan and have a confidence toaccomplish great things, according to Favero.

"It's important to remem-ber this is a new year," Faveroadded. "We have no obliga-tion to compare ourselves tolast season. This is a newgroup of players that havealready begun to mesh welltogether to battle some toughteams. We've improved ourtalent and depth in manyareas and are looking forwardto the season."

Coming off a groundbreaking sea-son, a 13-3-4 record and a trip to theNCAA National Tournament for thefirst time in program history, whatdoes the Georgia College women'ssoccer team and head coach JuanPablo Favero do for an encore? Playone of the toughest schedules in thenation in an effort to prepare theBobcats for national success.

The Bobcats cracked the NationalSoccer Coaches Association ofAmerica (NSCAA) National Top-25for the first time in 2008 reaching ashigh as No. 19. Each one of theBobcat matches count for in-regionplay this year, helping them bolstertheir all-important region rankingas they look to make it two-straighttrips to the NCAA Tournament. The slate features a whoppingseven teams that played in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, andfour from the NSCAA's Final National Rankings. In addition, they face off with the 2007 National Champions among 11 teamsthat have been in the National Tournament in the past twoyears.

"This team is ready for the challenge of this type of schedule,"said Favero. "We've chosen to play these opponents to preparethe team for the level of talent in a national tournament. It's animportant step toward the program's big goal."

The Bobcats return 16 letterwinners, including 14 that startedin games for the Bobcats a year ago. Add in a talented class ofeight newcomers, and the team is poised for another great run.

"Last year we had very little time to prepare for the season,"he said. "This season, the team put in hard work in the springand over the summer on theirown, so as a coach, I'm excitedto build off a full year of suc-cessful training."

The offense has also had ayear to settle in, and the teamhas embraced Favero's morepossession-based internationalstyle very well. The team'sdefense was its calling card in2008, recording a mind-bog-gling 13 shutouts and allowingjust 10 goals on the year. All ofthe defensive starters return, including a trio of All-PeachBelt Conference (PBC) per-

While at Missouri Baptist,he led his teams to NAIA prominence and was awarded with the American Midwest Conference Coach of the Year honor for the men in2001 and for the women in 2002, as both teams went from struggling to winning conference championships and earning national ranks.

Prior to his work at Newberry and Missouri Baptist, he also helped rebuild the soccer program at his alma mater, Palm Beach AtlanticCollege. In 1994, he received his undergraduate degree with honors in international business and marketing and earned a Master's degreein counseling psychology from the school in 1997. While coaching at PBA, he also served as a guidance counselor and coach at a West PalmBeach high school.

Favero is a member of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), from which he holds a National "A" coaching license, and of theNational Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), from which he holds the Premier Diploma. He is also a member of theAssociation for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), the Argentine Association of Sport Psychology (APDA) and has a Level 1 Psychology forSoccer Certificate from the English Football Association.

HONORSGeorgia College also landed its first players on the NSCAA All-Region Team, assenior forward Hayley Ferrell and junior defender Morgan Cobb earnedslots on the Southeast Region squad.

Ferrell and Cobb joined five other Bobcats on the All-PBC teams, as soph-omores Jessica Binkowski, Mary Rob Plunkett, Ally Treat and KaylaEmerson joined freshman Karen Bonilla with all-conference honors.Junior Kara Teresi and freshmanMegan McAlpin were named to the PBCAll-Tournament Team.

The Bobcats got it done in the classroom as well, as senior Beth Coughlinand Binkowski were selected to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA AcademicAll-District Team. Coughlin, Jamie Nevin, Treat, Binkowski, Lyric Burnett,Jeni Day, Kelli McLane, Plunkett and Ferrell were also selected to the firstPeach Belt All-Academic Team.

The Bobcats also picked up a team academic award through the NSCAAand the National Ethics/Sportsmanship honor from the same organization.

Bobcats garner first NCAA Tournament trip amongother great momentsWith a 13-3-4 record, best in the program's history, a 5-1-2 Peach Belt record, also best ever, and with several team and individual records broken, there is nodoubt that Georgia College Soccer has become an elite program recognizedNationally with it's first NSCAA National Ranking as well as it's first-ever NCAANational Tournament Appearance.

In perspective, this was truly an amazing season not just in the historicalcontext of the program, but for any program at any time: A dominating teamdefense which was on top of the national statistics, being nationally ranked andmaking the NCAA tournament is a great year for any team and especially for afive-year old program in the middle of it's first coaching transition.

After a tough pre-season schedule, the season started with a 0-0 tie againstBelmont Abbey, not the way coaches and players would have envisioned, but inthe second game against perennial regional powerhouse Tusculum College, a 2-1 win gave the team much needed confidence boost.

Two more wins against non-conference opponents and a 3-0-1 recordmeant the team's first appearance in the NSCAA Regional Ranking, an honormaintained through the end of the season.

The team's first conference match against UNC Pembroke would prove tobe a test since UNCP was ranked in the top-10 nationally and undefeated. In anaccident-filled game, UNCP would break through at the end of the half and handthe Bobcats its first loss of the season, and what would be the only regular sea-son loss of the year.

A four-game winning streak including a 1-0 win at home vs. Lander, pre-ceded a much anticipated match against Armstrong Atlantic, who had been inthe NCAA Tournament the last two years. After going down an early goal, theBobcats showed much character and were able to score two goals before half-time. It seemed the score would hold up until the last minute of play when AASUscored a tying goal to send the game into OT, but neither team was able to breakthe deadlock.

In the next six games, the Bobcats posted a 5-0-1 record, including four keyPBC wins leading to the last regular season contest at Columbus State. CSU hadalready clinched the PBC Championship, and Georgia College could finish nohigher than third place, its highest finish ever, but the game was a defensive bat-tle, in which the tough Georgia College defense provided its 12th shutout.

The Conference tournament brackets were set and the Bobcats beat Lander2-0 in the first round to set up a rematch with UNC Pembroke in the semifinal inEvans, Ga. In a game where the Bobcats were out playing their opponents, a"fatal five minutes cost us the game," said Favero referring to a missed penaltykick for the Bobcats and allowing two goals right after that. A late tally off a cor-ner kick proved to be too little. So could this great season have come to an end.... Georiga College would have to wait three long nights and two days to find outif their 13-2-4 record would be enough to get an at-large bid to the NCAA tour-nament.

On a Monday afternoon, as the team gathered in the locker room, theannouncement was made and the team exploded with joy and emotion. TheBobcats had done it ... they were on their way to the first-ever NCAA appearanceand would face Catawba College, a team Favero was familiar with from his daysin the South Atlantic Conference.

The game started well for the team with the run of play and early scoringchances clearly on their favor. One of those clear chances was capitalized halfwaythrough the first half on a goal by sophomoreKayla Emerson. The second halfsaw the momentum change and a couple of missed clearances led to the tyingtally by Catawba. The uncharacteristic defensive lapses would prove to be theundoing of the team as in the first OT period, a similar play would lead to the lastgoal the team would allow in 2008, and with it the end of an incredible season.

Peach Belt Conference

Since its inception in 1991, the Peach Belt Conference hasworked tirelessly to become one of the elite conferences inNCAA Division II. Now entering its 19th season with 26national championships and 27 national finalists, the PBChasaccomplished that goal. Startingwith only two championshipsin 1991, in men's and women's basketball, the conference hasexpanded to 12 championship sports with the addition ofwomen’s soccer in the fall of 2000.

The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a DivisionII conference. Following a secondmeeting onDec. 3, 1989, fiveof those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt andbegan play in 1991.

The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing anational championship. The Columbus State golf team tookthe honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first ofthree golf championships the Cougars own.

The 2005-06 season was another successful yearwith USC Aiken winning its third straight golf champi-onship and Columbus State finishing second, andArmstrong Atlantic State was the runner-up in thewomen's tennis national championship.

The seven charter members of the conference wereArmstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus StateUniversity, Francis Marion University, Georgia College &State University, Lander University, USC Aiken and USC

Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopt-ed in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conferencein May of 2000.

Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNCPembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. Theywere followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994,Clayton College & State University on July 1, 1995 and theUniversity of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw Stateand North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005and the conferencewelcomed inNorthGeorgiaCollege&StateUniversity as its 11th member in the fall of 2005. GeorgiaSouthwestern State University was accepted as the league’s12th member in the spring of 2006. Flagler College and theUniversity of Montevallo will join the conference in 2009.

MILLEDGEVILLE,Ga. – TheGeorgia College soccer teamand head coach Juan PabloFavero are proud to announce anagreement with non-profit organi-zation Little Feet to purchase prac-tice balls.

The program is simple, foreach ball purchased through theorganization, Little Feet donates aball to a needy child to promote thegame of soccer worldwide. TheBobcats are just the second colle-giate soccer team to join up with the organization.

“We have traveled to some of the most poverty stricken areasall over the world and nothing can put a smile on a kid's face

faster than a new soccer ball can, “ said organization founderTrevor Slavick. “It is simplyamazing how one ball can makesuch a huge difference in thatchild's life. Some of these futuresmiles will now come courtesy ofthe Bobcat Soccer Team. A soc-cer ball won't stop a war and itwon't fill a belly, but it mighthelp heal a soul and let childrenbe children; at least for a littlewhile.”

The Bobcat soccer team will usethe balls for practice purposes, and are happy to give back tofuture soccer stars.

Individuals can purchase soccer balls through Little Feet aswell. To help build the program, visit the Little Feetweb site atwww.littlefeet.com .

"I am extremely proud of the team for attaining this high

honor as it is a very difficult one to attain," says head coachJuan Pablo Favero. "We have a trident of areas we want toexcel in: athletically, academically, and as ambassadors ofGeorgia College.
