Appointments and Awards 2004 Kumho Award Recipient Dr Joanne Chory Joanne Chory, PhD, of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies is the recipient of the 2004 Kumho Award, a prize of US $30,000 for meritorious research in plant molecular biology/biotechnology given by the Kumho Cultural Foundation and Kumho Group of Korea. The 2004 Kumho Award is presented to recognize the quality and extent of Dr Chory's contributions to the understanding of how light and hormones influence plant development and, in particular, for her landmark discoveries of how steroid hormones of plants affect light-regulated gene expres- sion. The prize is for the recipient's personal use and is the most prestigious award in plant biology. The recipient is flown to Korea, at Kumho expense, to at- tend the award ceremony and deliver an award lecture at the Kumho Life and En- vironmental Engineering Laboratory (KLESL) in Kwagju, Korea. The ISPMB, by means of a specially appointed committee, chooses the award recipient. 2004 Visiting Scientist Award The 2004 ISPMB Visiting Scientist Fellowship was granted to Dr M.B. Mohamed Sathik of the Rubber Research Institute of India, Kottayam. He will be visiting the laboratory of Dr Anton Schaeffner at the Institute of Biochemical Plant Pa- thology, GSF Research Center, Munchen, Germany, where he will acquire hands-on experience on the use of microarray analysis of differential gene expres- sion. Dr Sathik will receive from the ISPMB a monthly stipend of US $2000 for 9 months for a total of $12,000.
