Community Empowerment is a process in reaching improvement for the community, the program was to give them many knowledge through trainings so they can have the ability to stand and make something useful on their own. One of the efforts in making the community empowerment process to be perfect is by giving mentoring. Mentoring essentially is an attempt to reach out and make the community joined in the process of developing their own potential aspects so they could have a better quality of life in the future. The activity was implemented to facilitate the decision making process from various activities that are related to the community’s needs, building their ability in order to increase their income, making business scale enterprises, and also developing the planning and implementation of any participated activities. Within this mentoring phase, the availability of high quality Human Resources will be needed; the ones that can act as a facilitator, communicator and a dynamist throughout the program and could also act as a consultant when they are needed by the community groups. The changes of the community’s behavior in making them more creative and independent in developing productive business are the focus of this mentoring program. The people who helped this mentoring program comes from the local mentoring source in the local

area (community leaders, agriculture extension) also the mentoring people that comes from outside the area (NGO, University) as long as they meet the mentoring criteria. PT Indo Tambangraya Megah Tbk (PT ITM Tbk) through their Community Development Department is always trying in giving their best in order to support the local community development and empowerment in their fostered area. One of the formula that was used to complete the program implementation was by giving assistance throughout the program, from beginning until the end of the implementation. PT Indominco Mandiri is one of the subsidiaries that have set an example in implementing mentoring program, in economy, education, health and physical infrastructure. For example, in the economy field, Indominco strives in giving training of Golden Melon cultivation program which then continued by performing organization and the implementation for cultivation program cooperating with the local government and community that are directly involve. Besides all that, this mentoring program was also implemented by other fostered sites of PT ITM Tbk, such as PT Kitadin, Trubaindo Coal Mining, Jorong Barutama Greston and also Bharinto Ekatama. The program objective is none other than to create and make a better community systems and ability in

PT Indominco Mandiri (PT IMM) as one of PT Indo Tambangraya Megah Tbk subsidiary company, together with their fostered community has succeeded in developing Golden Melon at Bontang Lestari, South Bontang Sub-District, Bontang. The success was an implementation of community development program in economical field. This program was executed based on the identification of the area’s potential that was taken from the social mapping and the community’s participation - planning base, the program was hoped to be a sustainable program in the future. Inspired from the needs of fruits, especially melon that is quite a large thing in Bontang City, Samarinda, and Sangatta, through their community development program PT IMM has initiated the melon cultivation program for their fostered area. Together with Forum Komunikasi Masyarakat/Community Consultative Committee (CCC) and the local government, the planning of the program’s implementation has already been arranged and it started with Melon cultivating training collaborating with IPMC (Ikatan Petani Melon Cilegon/Melon Farmers Association in Cilegon) which is the largest melon supplier for supermarket in Jakarta and Surabaya. This Melon Cultivating program is a synergy program of the company and also the government to support the community development in Bontang City, especially in Bontang Lestari Village. The local government through the Department of Agriculture supported this program by giving training of melon cultivating focusing on the type of Golden Melon that is predicted to have high economy value and good competition in the market. On the last 30th March, Bontang Lestari community and the Management of PT IMM celebrated their first harvest of Golden Melon; the celebration was attended by Bontang City’s Department of Agriculture. PT IMM’ expectation from this melon cultivation is so that this economy - agriculture program could add more value and could also give good impact in increasing the farmer’s productivity at Bontang Lestari Village and also for other fostered village.

PT Indominco Mandiri (PT IMM) on March 30th conducted the Golden Melon harvest

activity with the local farmers “Sukses Bersama Tani” in Bontang Lestari Village (Bontang Lestari Administrative village). This Golden Melon cultivation is a result from one of PT IMM’s community development program. The main objective of this program is to push the local community so they can stand on their own, make efforts from their own capability and not just work as an employee. For this program PT IMM has spent total 30 million IDR by bringing 5000 seeds of the company’s “Known You Seed” , which is the company from Thailand that based on agriculture, this company provides fertilizers and pesticides also gives counseling to the farmers about how to cultivate the Golden Melon. The program also received

support from the local government, Bontang Agricultural Department. The harvested Golden Melon will be sold at the local market and very soon they will the sold in supermarkets of big cities such as Surabaya and Jakarta. This first harvest was attended by the External Relation Manager, M. Nasution and other Management of

PT IMM, Bontang’s Haef of Agriculture and Marine Department, Aji Erlynawati and the stad, Head of South Bontang Sub-District, Amilluddin and Head of Bontang Lestari Village, Rendi Irawan. On other occasion, near the time of Quarterly Communication Meeting, directors of ITM, Pongsak Thongampai and Mahyudin Lupis visited the Golden Melon farm. They were assisted by the Assistant Vice President of Community Development, Tri Harjono, Head of PT Tambang Indominco, and Head of Agriculture and Marine Department, Aji Erlynawati. The Directors were invited to witness the achievement of Golden Melon agriculture program by picking the Golden Melon and tasting it straight from the farm. The Head of Agriculture and Marine Department, Aji Erlynawati expressed her happiness and gratitude towards PT IMM because of its role in developing community through various programs of economy improvement such as Golden Melon agriculture.

The workshop discusses everything involving the teacher’s professionalism and it was being practically delivered so the students were able to understand the topic easily. This activity has received positive response from the teachers that participated in the training, especially the ones that come from fostered villages. They stated that the training is very suitable for the profession as a teacher so they have managed to gain many new knowledge and insight about how to teach rightfully in school. From the training, the teachers are motivated into stimulating their students to have creative and innovative mind. The company was also hoping that the teachers would gain new insights that could help them in implementing their role as the student’s educators, teachers and mentors at school. Teacher is the key to the success of education program, because apart from being experienced teacher they should also have the adequate capability.

PENAS XIII 2011(National Agriculture Week)

The National Agriculture Week of Indonesian Farmers and Fisherman is a meeting forum or

a place to teach, exchange information and experience between the farmers – fisherman and forests researcher, extension workers and the government so it can uplift the spirits, responsibility, and also their ability to stand on their own in developing Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry. The 2011 National Agriculture Week was the 13th events, and it will be held at East Kalimantan Province, the implementation will be centered at Kutai Kertanegara District. The activity will make PT Kitadin that is located in Kutai Kertanegara District as one of the main purpose visit. This is related with the community development program by PT Kitadin that has managed to transform the former mining land into a place for agriculture, fisheries and livestock. Working together with the community, NGO and some of the farmers group surround the mining area; PT Kitaden has already proven

This was proven through development of Integrated Farming System (IFS) by combining the agriculture, fisheries and livestock in one location (pilot project). From the livestock, they succeeded in chicken poultry with 5000 chicken for the first production, also 200 cows that are being followed by goats and ducks. From fisheries, the Tilapia fisheries has developed as many as 1300 fish and 750 for catfish using the floating net method on the pond. From Agriculture, it has managed to develop patchouli grass in the area 1.3 Ha wide, Elephant grass in the area 1.8 Ha wide and trial for vegetables in the former mining land without using top soil. Hopefully that this National Agriculture Week and expo can set good example that the former mining land could be used optimally and could also be a place to share knowledge between the farmers, animal farmers and fisherman in developing the community’s economy.

PT Trubaindo Coal Mining (PT TCM) is a subsidiary of PT Indo Tambangraya Megah

Tbk that operated in West Kutai District with 20 fostered villages. As a company that is very much aware of its duty, PT TCM has given many mentoring and help started with physical and non physical. One of them are building clean water facilities in Bentian Besar, spesifically in Suakong, Penarong and Dilang Puti Villages. The first phase of this program plan is to socialize and make a deal between the stakeholder that consist of sub-district, public works department and the community from the 3 villages. After all of the above, survey is also needed to be conducted together with the community, audit planning, budgeting, appointment of the executor, and making the project agreement. The activity objective is to provide clean water facilities that

this activity is the community’s involvement in the planning process and also in the program implementation such as, making foundation and clean water facility, dividing water system, electricity system and many more. Those were the things that always done by PT TCM in order to educate and empowering the community and not only in planning and managing but also the technique of Implementation. The head of Bentian Besar Sub-District, Mr. Ampeng Spd, Msi stated, “Thank you for PT TCM’s participation in building clean water facility. The community is hopped to make good use and preserve the facility well. This is very useful to us, to the Bentian Besar Village community, so please take good care of it. Presumably the company will continue in supporting this clean water facility operational, such as for fuel procurement, equipment also training and organizing. “

As for the program’s implementation, it was involved by many parties, from the company, the government and also the community. From the company, did not only involving the Community Development Department’s participation, but also purchasing, maintenance, accounting, GA, QSE and many more. As from the local government, those who are involved were Camat, Bupati and Public Works Department of Bontang City. Light snack such as Borneo anchovy is a product from the fostered village at

Selangan Island, Bontang Lestari Administrative Village. To visit this island, its common that we use ketinting boat for about 20 minutes journey from Tanjung Laut harbour, Bontang City. The Selangan community lives in colony above the sea with the life pattern more or less the same with people in Tihi-Tihi Island. The difference between the two islands is the majority people at Tihi-Tihi island comes from Mamuju, South Sulawesi, as for Melahing Island the majority of the people come from Kutai tribes, Tenggarong. One of the interesting about this island is the overwhelming quantity of Gunu’-Gunu’ fish (according to the term of the island community) and it is now called HITIM’s Borneo Anchovy. This kind of fish lives in groups under the community’s resident with a very abundant quantity, because it has no economical value if it is sold in fresh form. Great potential like this has become our inspiration source as a CDO to process the fish as a home industry activity. This home industry activity that was done is a form of the women’s fishers empowerment to develop the Gunu’-Gunu’ fish into becoming Borneo Anchovy Snack. The targets

this business; all of them are divided into different section of task, such as:1. Crawlers of fresh fish section2. Surgery and cleaning fish bones

materials that are ready to use) section

This is a very special program because it has opened new job field for housewives. As for the next step of this program, hopefully there will be area development for the other island that also has great potential in their raw material like Tihi-Tihi Island and Melahing. The most important thing is that the guidance has to have integrated and targeted pattern in order to make HITIM products stay on top from quality, legality and taste.

The 2011 K3 Month Anniversary of PT Indominco Mandiri (PT IMM) is celebrated with several

social activities which aim to promote the values of health and work safety in daily life also in social environment. The main activity of this K3 Month is to do socialization about K3 to the communities that are living side by side with the company that is divided by 3 operational areas. First location was done at the multi- purpose building in Suka Damai Village; the next one is at Bontang Lestari Administrative Village and the last one in Teluk Pandan Village. This socialization has involved several departments from Safety and Clinique that provide topics about health and safety, common issues that the communities are facing in their daily life. The safety topic is about how to handle and maintaining 3 kg LPG cylinder, meanwhile the Clinique talks about dengue fever. At the end of the event there is also quiz for the participants that have come to enliven the socialization event; they came from the youth, teachers, village officials, community leaders, and health personnel for students. Other activities that were implemented in order to celebrate this K3 Month were competitions for school level, such as UKS (Unit

At the end, all of the student would be able to learn well because it is supported with clean and healthy environment, other effects were shown through the parents’ role in making this activity to be more successful. Nanang Nuryato, a teacher of 021 Satan Ulu Elementary School said, “Every parents that were actively involved started with the planning and the financing of this UKS Competition, were very enthusiastic and at the end the hard efforts has given our school first prize. We are planning to complete and increase our UKS facilities and Infrastructures with the prize that we had won.” The spirit of K3 were shown in every competitions, all of the school competed very well in order to achieve the best.

On April 1st 2011, PT Bharinto Ekatama (PT BE) Community Development

held a Health Care Program for Elementary School students. The objective of this program is to show that PT BE cares about health especially to children age 6-13 years old. This Health Care Program was held at elementary schools in Benangin I and V which are located at East Teweh Sub-District, Middle Kalimantan. The program was done by PT BE working together with a team of doctors and paramedics from PUSKESMAS (Health Clinic) Benangin. The total participants of this program reached up to 292 students; they came from first graders to sixth graders. The Health Care Event began with greetings from the Head Master, followed with the company’s representatives, Dindin Makinuddin. After giving greetings, the event continues with health check up by the doctors and the medics, and then giving away Helminthic (worm medicine) also multivitamins. This Health Care Events will be done twice a year, involving all of the Elementary School in 5 fostered villages of PT BE. With the help of PUSKESMAS’s data base, the health

of the students will always be monitored by the paramedic team. There are needs to give more attention to the community in fostered villages, especially in heath become one of the main reasons why PT BE’s Community Development organized this program. Good responses can be seen from some of the comments given by the school. One of them is what Mrs. Kartina the headmaster of 1 Benangin I Elementary School had said, that this health care program

is a very useful program and the school will welcome this program any time.The same comment also came from the Village Officials; they hoped that this program will continue every year ahead. This Health Care Program will continue to be implemented by PT BE as a commitment and care towards the community. The next Health Care will be held at Elementary Schools at Besiq and Bermai area.

(24/5), PT Indominco Mandiri and PT Pamapersada Nusantara gives away toolbox of mechanic equipment as one of the assisted repair shop program that is located in the fostered area. The equipments were given to 19 manager and motorcycle repair shop that spreads in 3 areas of East Kutai, Kutai Kartanegara, and Bontang. In his speech, External Relation Manager, M. Nasution explains that the repair shop assisting in the fostered area is one of the Comdev program to answer the community needs of business opportunities and to have good Income. “This is achieved by empowerment activities that focus on increasing vocational skills. One part there are wide market

where the public are vehicle users and they surely need automotive workshop.” he explained. Before that, the managers and mechanic repair shop also have been following several training activities such as base mechanic, accounting and financial management, also mechanic training for automatic motorcycle. “We hope that the managers and mechanic repair shop could optimize the knowledge and insight that they have got. Do not forget to maintain the reputation and costumer’s trust in running the business, with honesty,” requested Nasution. Abdul Malik, one of the repair shop owner stated that the assisted program that was done by the company all this time is very useful. The owner of repair shop located in Bontang road - Samarinda, Suka Rahmat Village said, “Many trainings including getting this automatic mechanic toolbox is suited to what we always needed. We hoped that assisting program like this will continue. Representing other mechanic friends, we would like to say thank you for the trainings that was done by Indominco and Pama.”

Meanwhile, The Head of PT Pama Community Development Department, Ono Karno, whom also attended the event. He explained that the repair shop assistance program is one of the company’s social responsibilities. “Collaboratively, we are giving our best effort in assisting and helping repair shops that are located in the fostered area, so they could have the ability to grow and become more professional. In the future, we will continue in performing many more activities that could support the process.” he explained. One of the programs that were being participated by the repair shop owners and mechanic is an entrepreneurial seminar that is held at Bontang at the end of this May.

Sweet Potato, I think everyone of us knows what sweet potato is. In basic Indonesian language, Sweet potato is called Cassava. In everyday life, perhaps many of

us often forget sweet potato/cassava. Sweet potato is food that commonly found in the village, but now Its popularity has been defeated by many import food that sometimes we don’t even know what the benefits are, these kind of foods are only popular because of its good packaging and great promotion. But do you know that sweet potato contains great amount of benefits for our health. One of the most popular benefits of sweet potato is one of the greatest sources of Vitamin A. For clearer information about the benefit of Sweet Potato, let’s check out this information that I have summarized from kompas.com

1. One of great source of Vitamin A Sweet Potato is titled as a super food by Center for Science in the Public Interest due to the nutritional content. One medium size of sweet potato provides more that 200 percent daily needs of Vitamin A. This vitamin comes in a form of beta karoten, which gives the orange color on sweet potato. The Vitamin A itself gives good benefit for vision, skin, and bones. Sweet Potato also serves as an antioxidant; helps prevent infection in digestive system, urinary tract and lungs. From a study that was held at Kansas State University in 2003, and published in The American Society for Nutritional Sciences, it is found that there is a relation between the lack of Vitamin A and Emphysema (lung infection that caused difficulty in breathing).

Vitamin and other mineral Sweet potato is also a good source of Vitamin C (a piece of sweet potato could fulfill 66 percent of Vitamin C a day), copper, Vitamin B6, iron, calcium, potassium, and manganese. Sweet potato is also rich in fiber. According to The U.S. Sweet Potato Council Inc., if we eat cooked sweet

potato with its skin could provide us more fiber than a serving of oatmeal.

3. Easy to digest Its high content of starch does not work very well for the digestive system, which could eliminate the cause of abdominal pain. But its high content of fiber could prevent constipation (and other cause of stocah diseases). Meanwhile its VItamin A, B, C, Calcium and Potassium helps relieve stomach ulcers and other similar type of diseases, because sweet potato contains good anti inflammation.

4. Alternative Carbohydrates for Diet Raw middle sized Sweet Potato contains 112 calorie, fat free and it has no colesterol, also low sodium. The content could change, depends on how you cooked it. Steaming or boiling the sweet potato will bring its natural sweetness, but it will lessen the calorie. Sweet potato have low levels of Glycemic Index (GI), especially when its compared with white bread or rice. The GI scale will evaluate food based on how much and how fast the food could increase the blood’s glucose level. Because its effect towards the blood’s glucose are quite small, swwt potato also has become a perfect choice of people who suffer from diabetes that needs carbohydrates, but does not affect the insulin level. A study that was held at University of Vienna, Austria in 2003 proved that people who has Diabetes Melitus type II who consumed high doses of sweet potato experienced great decreased to insulin resistance without weight changing, or other affected factors.
