New HV Blades for ultra-high viscosities – Thehelical curve and graduated down-thrust cross-section of the new HV Blades prevent heavymaterials from “climbing” up into the vacuumhood and charging ports. A smooth mixingaction eliminates torque spikes during themixing process and significantly increases theoperating range of the Double Planetary Mixer. Our sleek new DPM Double Planetary design

encloses the mixer and auxiliary equipment. Our integrated control systems are

designed and built by Ross Systems andControls. They are pre-programmed and pre-wired, so start-up is fast and inexpensive. No need for third-party installers.

Seal selection to match your performancerequirements – Numerous options areavailable for sealing the drive shaft, stirrershafts and the vacuum hood. Seal designsinclude such choices as Teflon chevron v-rings,dry-running mechanical seals, elastomerico-rings, and lip seals in materials such asNitrile, Viton, silicon and Kalrez.

Precise machining for superior vacuumcapabilities – Vacuum hoods and interchange-able vessels are precisely machined for aperfect fit. The result – you can sustain anextremely high level of vacuum (29" Hg).

THE MOST VERSATILE PLANETARYMIXER EVER CREATEDThe patented Ross PowerMix* offers remarkableversatility, which makes it ideal for applications inwhich a series of mixing stages require severaltypes of mixing action.

In one continuous mix cycle, for example, the PowerMix can apply high shear andquickly disperse a powder in a low-viscosity liquid. As the materialthickens, the PowerMix can continue the mixing process even after theproduct has reached a high-viscosity,non-flowing state.

With this versatility, the PowerMix canoften combine the mixing action of twomixers – allowing you to retire two piecesof equipment – and cut the cycle time by50% or more.

POWERMIX OPERATIONThe PowerMix is unique because itcombines a planetary blade and a highspeed disperser with the characteristicplanetary motion of a Double PlanetaryMixer. Both agitators are in constantmotion. The planetary blade contin-uously sweeps the vessel wall and feedsmaterial directly into the high shear zoneof the orbiting high speed disperser –accelerating the mixing process.

* Patent No. 4,697,929

The Ross PowerMix can be supplied with your choice of highspeed, high shear agitators. Here, a high speed chopperblade substitutes for a high speed disperser. Multiple highspeed disperser blades can also be supplied, with theirpositions adjustable on a single shaft.

Lab models, like this 2gallon PowerMix, areextremely efficient foreither benchtop processdevelopment or small-volume production.Scale-up is smooth andpredictable. Lab modelsare often supplied witha discharge systemmounted on the samebench – a highly efficient,self-contained system.

The use of multiple change cans can transform a traditional batchmixing system into a semi-continuous system. Efficiency increasesmeasurably as one can wheels away from the mixer for dischargewhile another rolls into position immediately to begin mixing thenext batch. In this case, these stainless steels change cans are rolledaway from the PowerMix and raised to discharge an electronic inkdirectly into a Three Roll Mill. Side-mounted flush ball valves ensurecomplete discharge.

Many PowerMix units, like this one, are builtwith a stainless steel jacketand a thermocouple formonitoring batch temper-ature during the mix cycle. For applications involvingheat-sensitive materials –in which thermal controlis critical throughout themix cycle – Ross engineershave developed a sensorthat orbits the vessel andtravels through the batchmaterial. Readings areextremely accurate.

Select the right blade design, and the rightflow pattern, to optimize the mixing processin your application.

Rectangular blades – The proven choicefor many low to high viscosityapplications, these blades mix with apowerful kneading action. They aresuitable for thorough wet or dry blendingregardless of the product’s flowcharacteristics.

Finger blades – Ross Finger Blades areoften preferred for special applications thatrequire the mixing of delicate solids andfibers. These blades can also be customdesigned to fine-tune axial flow – andmeet the specific requirements of yourapplication.

New HV Blades – Ross’s patented HVBlades produce excellent axial and radialflow, and easily handle medium to ultra-high viscosity materials. The HV Bladesprevent heavy batch materials from“climbing-up” the blades – extending theworking range of the Double PlanetaryMixer by several million centipoise.

VACUUM MIXING Ross is a world leader in vacuum mixing anddrying. Applied to any Ross mixer or blender, vacuum can accelerate the mix/blend cycle, improve end-product quality, and help recoversolvents that would otherwise escape into theplant atmosphere. Vacuum is also an effectivetool for adding lightweight powders to a liquidbatch – eliminating “dusting” in the plant andwetting out solids quickly.

INTEGRATED TURNTABLEMIXING/DISCHARGE SYSTEM An automated turntable mixing system can make your planetary mixing process significantlymore productive. As the turntable indexes, thechange cans cycle through a sequence ofcharging, mixing, discharging and cleaning. With a complete control system and materialhandling package, operator intervention can bevirtually eliminated. Compact and platform-mounted, the system can cut labor costs while it improves end-product consistency andincreases production.

Ross provides many designsspecialized to meet the needs ofdemanding applications. SanitaryDouble Planetary mixers, forexample, are available in all sizes, with a variety of polishes. Specialvalve options, including flushbottom radial diaphragm valvesand flush bottom ball valves, areavailable to simplify cleaning.

Ross offers many liftoptions to accommodate

the special needs of your application. In this

300-gal. Double Planetarymixer, a dual-post lift

offers increased strengthfor handling high-viscosity

materials. It also allowseasy handling of mix

vessels from either side of the mixer.

With heavy duty construction and exceptionaladaptability, the 1 quart Double Planetarymixer is our most popular size for laboratoryapplications – especially for small-scaleproduction leading to scale-up. The change-can design is ideal for use with an auxiliarydischarge system, to meet special handlingand filling requirements.

AUTOMATIC DISCHARGE SYSTEMS A follower plate discharge system, actuatedhydraulically or pneumatically, can dramaticallyimprove your production while it improves safety in your plant.

With a mix vessel precisely machined in ourown fabrication plant, discharge is fast andcomplete – even for many highly viscousmaterials. The batch material is often dischargeddirectly into bulk packaging, retail packaging, or conveying equipment.

By automating the discharge process, thesystem also reduces the risk of injury. Operatorscan now push a button instead of manuallyscooping the product out of the mix vessel. Thisreduces their exposure to the product andreduces the risk of injury while dischargingheavy products by hand.

DOUBLE PLANETARY MIXER OPERATIONIn a Ross Double Planetary Mixer, two planetaryblades rotate on their own axes, while they orbit themix vessel on a common axis. The bladescontinuously advance along the periphery of thevessel, removing material from the vessel wall andtransporting it to the interior.

This positive mixing action serves several purposes.

Complete mixing – In only a few minutes, the bladespass through every point in the vessel and promotefast and thorough mixing.

Efficient heat transfer – By preventing a layer ofmaterial from accumulating on the vessel wall, themixer ensures efficient heat transfer and evendistribution of heat throughout the batch – criticallyimportant concerns for heat-sensitive materials.

Now, ultra-high viscosity capacity with HV Blades –The mixer can handle materials of extremely highviscosities. With conventional blades, the DoublePlanetary Mixer can operate up to approximately1.5 million centipoise.* With Ross HV Blades, speciallydesigned for heavy materials, the operating limit ismuch higher – approximately 6 million centipoise.

* At very high levels, the measure of viscosity is an extremely subjectiveprocess. In addition, many variables besides viscosity must be consideredwhen determining the operating limits of any mixer. Contact Ross todiscuss the key parameters that must be considered in your application.

In the Ross PowerMix, the planetary blade (A) and HSD (B) revolveon their own axes, while they both orbit the vessel on a commonaxis. By constantly advancing the agitators into the batch material, the PowerMix can apply intense mixing action while it prevents thelocalized build-up of heat.

* Patent No. 4,697,929
