Noah’s Rockin’ Ark Adventure can be an unforgettable experience for all who participate in it (and doesn’t need a

“cast of thousands” nor an extensive set to accomplish this objective). The musical is designed so that no matter

how large or small the production, the musical’s mission of telling the classic story of Noah and the Ark in a fresh

way that will resonate anew to all who perform and hear it can be accomplished. These additional Staging and

Movement Suggestions are intended to complement the general stage directions contained within the script.

OVERTURE: During the Overture, the choir and cast enter. While the choir assembles, Noah and his sons are

busily preparing the soda shoppe for another day: dusting tables, polishing drinking cups, adjusting things,

etc…generally doing some bits of “stage business” to add visual interest and energy while the Overture is heard

and the choir assembles. Shonda, Rhonda, and Flo also enter during the Overture pantomiming excited chattering

among themselves. They each pull out a small compact and primp a bit. They move to Stage Right to get in place

for their opening lines. (Note: At no time during the musical should any of the other actors on stage acknowledge

Shonda, Rhonda and Flo’s presence, since they serve as narrators who are helping tell and comment on the action,

but are not a part of it. That doesn’t mean they might not occasionally rise from their stools at the soda shoppe

counter to get a close-up or different angle on the action. That can add a fun/funny element if they are getting

close to the actors who don’t “see” them – as long as their presence and actions/gestures never “steal stage”…i.e.,

distract from the main lines/action that are taking place in that moment. But the soda shoppe counter is otherwise

“home base” for Shonda, Rhonda, and Flo during the musical).

General note: Whenever Shonda, Rhonda and Flo freeze everyone, if possible, have some of them freeze in funny

or distinctive poses…like pointing at each other, shrugging with their hands up, holding a napkin holder up in the

air or handing it to another person, etc. Things such as that which will make the “frozen” moments all the funnier

from a visual standpoint. If desired, the choir can also freeze/un-freeze along with the actors if you want the choir

to get into the action in that manner. And the choir might like to enjoy feeling as if they’re all the more a part of

the action by doing so. However, if you want the choir to remain in the role purely as a “Greek Chorus” (and

applaud the arrival of Shonda, Rhonda, and Flo) who observes the action, they needn’t freeze.

MAKIN’ WAVES: During this song, in addition to singing the song, Noah and his sons can wait on a few

customers who come into the shoppe (if you have enough cast members to serve as customers). Members of the

choir can be customers, and they sing along with the choir as do Noah and his sons as they greet the customers.

Once the opening scene is over and “Let’s Go Build An Ark” begins, the customers can return to the choir. During

the first verse, Noah can do the things that the lyrics describe (turning on the blender, grab a tray, etc.). Shonda,

Rhonda, and Flo could incorporate a few simple 50s women’s group hand motions on the “Bop, bop, shoo bop

bop, shana nana…” sections.

LET’S GO BUILD AN ARK: During the introduction, Noah gestures for his sons to gather ‘round. He sings

the solo as his sons eagerly listen (if your Noah isn’t a soloist, the choir can sing this opening section as Noah

pantomimes telling his sons his story). During measures 23-26, Noah pulls out a blueprint of the ark and shows it

excitedly to his sons, pointing out various things on it. During measures 35-38 the Sons take the blueprint from

Noah and are shaking their heads in disbelief. At measure 47, the Sons are “all in,” understanding the task at hand

and ready to get to work. They rush to get tools (plastic hammers, saws, a drill, etc.) from under the soda shoppe

counter (or another convenient spot on the stage where the items have been pre-placed). Simultaneously, a few

stagehands or choir members are bringing in the ark and placing it Stage Right at this moment. At measure 55,

when construction sounds are heard on the accompaniment track, Noah and his sons hammer, drill, and saw on the

ark as if to be constructing it right before the audience’s eyes in real time. They might even do some funny moves

like bumping into each other (almost a “Three Stooges” type routine) as they frantically build the ark. (Note: If

using live piano accompaniment instead of the accompaniment track no actual building sounds need be

heard…the pantomiming using the plastic tools will get the idea across). During the ark building portion of the

song, Shonda retrieves some (empty) popcorn boxes for her, Rhonda and Flo. They sit on their stools and pretend

to eat popcorn and watch with great interest as the ark is “built.” At measure 65, Noah and his sons stand back

with great excitement and pride that the ark is finally finished. They all strike a fun pose on the last note.

RAINY DAY BLUES: During the introduction, the choir pulls out sunglasses and puts them on. Rain sticks are

heard at measure 17 on the recording, but you can incorporate live rainsticks at other points during the song if

desired. At measure 47, the choir pulls out kazoos and plays the melody. If you use animals in your production

(either costumed children or children holding stuffed animals), have an “animal parade” from measure 47 – 61,

where the animals march around the ark, the stage and/or even into parts of the audience. After the “parade,” the

animals sit to finish the song. At measure 58, the choir (and costumed animals, if used) make random animal

sounds. The choir removes their sunglasses at the conclusion of the song.

HOPE IS HERE: If possible, project a picture of a rainbow above or beside the choir onto a screen or wall

during this song. At measure 44, consider having the choir pick up a small rainbow (which each choir member

has colored their own) mounted on a short dowel. Each choir member holds their rainbow over their head for a

nice visual effect during the final chorus. The choir (and cast) sways gently to the left and right as they sing.

ROCK AROUND THE ROCK!: Gentle twisting movements during this song is an obvious choice during the

choruses…perhaps alternated with hand claps on some chorus sections. At measure 61, the choir stoops very

slightly on the first “Do what God has told you to do” and then stands more erect on the second “Do what God

has told you to do” then stands fully erect on the final “Do what God has told you to do.” On the final chorus, if

animals are used, they get into the act and twist along with everyone.

HOPE IS HERE (REPRISE): The cast faces the audience, hand-in-hand, to sing this final message directly to

the audience. The choir can again pull out their rainbows in the last three measures, creating a great visual effect

for the final moments.

NOTE: If desired and possible in your production, you can add the rain/thunder sound effects heard on the

Listening Recording during the storm. Simply transfer Track #49 on the InstruTrax Accompaniment CD to a

separate sound source and play it back during the spoken dialog where the storm occurs in the musical.

[During the “Overture,” the Choir enters and assembles on risers. The actors enter and do bits of stage “business” while the

choir gets into place: NOAH tidies up the soda counter with a small feather duster; SHEM, HAM and JAPHETH bring in

various objects such as straw holders, napkin holders, etc. to place on the counter. SHONDA, RHONDA and FLO enter and are

chatting among themselves, primping a bit with their compact mirrors. NOAH, SHEM, HAM and JAPHETH do not interact with

SHONDA, RHONDA and FLO since they cannot “see” them. At the end of the “Overture,” SHONDA, RHONDA and FLO put

their compacts away and stand at Stage Center. They do a dramatic “sassy snap” in a coordinated movement with their fingers.

At that moment, NOAH, SHEM, HAM and JAPHETH freeze in place and stand motionless while SHONDA, RHONDA and FLO

speak directly to the audience.]

begins. The moment the music begins, NOAH, SHEM, HAM and JAPHETH immediately break their frozen positions and

continue the business they were doing when they first froze. They finish their business at the end of the introduction to the song

and sing.]

I’m Shonda!

I’m Rhonda!

And I’m Flo!

And we’re The Rainbowettes!

[applauds]

We’re a singing group from the 50s…and that’s where you are now ladies and gents…

The fabulous 50s!

And we have quite a story to tell you!

It’s the story of Noah…but not as you’ve heard it before, daddy-o.

That’s right, Flo…for our musical, we’ve transported Noah to another time and place. Because his story is

history. And it’s timeless!

So, come with us to Noah’s Soda Shoppe, where a new day is just beginning.

But it’s not just any day. It’s the beginning of an event that’s going to rock the world.

[walking over to Noah, pointing at him] Here’s Noah.

And his three sons:

[pointing to each frozen son as she says each name] Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Here at the Shoppe it’s chop, chop, chop!

Let’s see what Noah and his crew are making to drink and chew!

And it’s faith that will see them through!

Well, my sons, looks as if we’re ready for another day at the shoppe!

You bet, dad! But we hardly ever have any customers.

Yeah, no one in this town seems to like your Bible reading and quoting scripture.

But what’s wrong with mixing some scripture with sundaes? Ice cream sundaes, that is.

Yesterday’s newspaper had a review of our soda shoppe. Listen to this [reading from the paper]

“Noah’s Soda Shoppe is a sinking ship. Don’t take that trip.”

I know, I know. The people in this town are crusin’ for a brusin’ to say the least. They don’t like

God’s word or His perfect ways.

Something has got to change!

[Looking around frantically] Who said that?

Sounded like a bunch of kids, but where could they come from?

Their parents!

God Himself told me this morning that something is indeed going to change.

[ad lib] What, father? What do you mean? What is it?

The Lord has seen the wicked ways of the people here.

[expectantly] Yes, yes!!

So, He is going to flood the earth.

Whaaat!!??

But thanks be to God…He said we will be spared as I have found favor with Him.

Incredible!!!

And…

[expectantly] And???

God has told me to build an ark.

Build a what?

Now this is going to get good. Let’s pop some popcorn, girls!

Can’t wait for the animals to show up.

[to the audience, waving her arms] Spoiler alert! Spoiler alert!

[During the ark building portion of “Let’s Go Build An Ark,” SHONDA retrieves some (empty) popcorn boxes for her, RHONDA

and FLO. They sit on their stools and pretend to eat popcorn and watch with great interest as the ark is “built.” At the conclusion

of “Let’s Go Build an Ark,” SHONDA, RHONDA and FLO put their popcorn boxes on the counter and move to Center Stage.

They again sassy snap their fingers in unison. NOAH, SHEM, HAM and JAPHETH all freeze.]

the ark while SHONDA, RHONDA and FLO return to their stools.]

THE CHOIR:

[Sounds effects of rain and thunder are heard while NOAH, SHEM, HAM and JAPHETH bounce around and lean right, then left

together. They have terrified looks on their faces. Some of the CHOIR members come over with scarves and/or long strips of cloth

to make “waves” around them (see Staging Suggestions).]

The ark was ready for the rains to fall.

It was big, and very tall!

There’s one important thing Noah did with his crew:

He and his wife and sons brought all living creatures on board…

Two by two!

[walking over to NOAH, tapping him lightly on the head while she speaks] Everyone in the town thought

Noah was wacky.

They laughed at his ark and thought it was tacky.

But then the rains did pour!

And God shut the door!

The boat rocked and the thunder knocked!

Father, we’ve been on this ark for what seems like forever. When is the rain ever going to stop?

We must have faith, son. God said it, and I believe it. He will make a way for us.

We know you’re right, father. But sometimes it’s tough. Day in and day out. Same old same old.

God’s timing is best. We’re doing what He’s asked us to do. He will see us through.

You’re right, father, it’s just that…

Now don’t worry, son. I’m going to go and check on your mother. I just saw her boxing with a kangaroo.

[Noah exits]

You guys, we know he’s right. But that doesn’t make this any easier!

Girls, sounds like they have a case of the you-know-whats.

Okay, hit it, choir!

I don’t need any more water in my soggy popcorn!

The rain has finally stopped!

Hooray!!!

[suddenly realizing] And we’re not moving anymore! Wonder if there’s dry ground out there yet?

I’m glad you asked that question!

Who are you?

I’m the dove your father sent out to find dry land. And boy, are my wings tired!

[expectantly, to the DOVE] Well?

[handing NOAH the green sprig] Good news! The land is dry. God says you can come out now.

And bring the animals so they can be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.

God has provided once again. He always keeps His promises! Let’s praise Him for His

faithfulness, boys!

Where have we landed, father?

I’m not quite sure, Shem, but we’re on a solid rock, that’s for sure.

That would be Mt. Ararat, if you please!

And God is our solid rock, too.

Amen. Even when the days were the darkest, God had a plan to bring us through.

You’ve got it made in the shade!

I think it’s time to party!

Twist and shout!

[SHONDA, RHONDA and FLO do their final sassy snap. NOAH, SHEM, HAM and JAPHETH unfreeze. The music begins for

“Hope Is Here (Reprise).”]

[to his sons] Let’s open a new soda shoppe on the ark.

They can call it “The Shake Shack!”

And our specialty will be the rainbow float!

Where’s mom, by the way?

She’s still boxing with that kangaroo. And she’s winning!

And there you have it, everyone. The story of Noah and the ark with a 50s twist.

But no matter what the time or place, we know you get the gist.

Even though life is makin’ waves every day…

No matter what others may say…

When we have faith, God will show us the way!

The End, girlfriends!

NOAH’S ROCKIN’ ARK ADVENTUREOverture

[During the “Overture,” the Choir enters and assembles on risers. The actors enter and do bits of stage “business” while the

choir gets into place: NOAH tidies up the soda counter with a small feather duster; SHEM, HAM and JAPHETH bring in various

objects such as straw holders, napkin holders, etc. to place on the counter. SHONDA, RHONDA and FLO enter and are chatting

among themselves, primping a bit with their compact mirrors.

[SHONDA, RHONDA and FLO again snap their fingers in one big sassy snap together, and the music for “Makin’ Waves”

begins. The moment the music begins, NOAH, SHEM, HAM and JAPHETH immediately break their frozen positions and continue

the business they were doing when they first froze. They finish their business at the end of the introduction to the song and sing.]

I’m Shonda!

Alright, boys, it’s been forty days and forty nights we’ve been on this ark, but who’s counting?

We are!

Here comes the good part!

I always cry at happy endings.

I’m not quite sure, Shem, but we’re on a solid rock, that’s for sure.

That would be Mt. Ararat, if you please!

And God is our solid rock, too.

You’ve got it made in the shade!

I think it’s time to party!
