It is a busy time of year for each of us, and it is no different with the ASCE Utah Section. I want to just use this space to share with you some of the upcoming events and remind you to keep your eyes on the section and branch calendars.

The Infrastructure Report Card committee is working diligently to finish up the report card for the state of Utah. Our hope is to get it out this fall with the hopes of having our recommendations involved in infrastructure funding discussions during the legislative session starting in January.

The UEC council is seeking awards nominations and articles for next year’s journal. Please see the attached notice and share your nomination or article. Or share this information with someone else that may have a nomination or article.

The Younger Member Forum Fall BBQ is October 17th more information is available in the YMF update. This is a great event that anyone interested in being involved in the YMF should attend, wherever you may be located.

The Utah Section 100 year anniversary is in 2016. We are in discussions about some great activities to celebrate this event. We are in need of volunteers to assist in the planning and hosting of these events and activities. Please let one

of the section leaders know if you are available to assist.

Student Scholarship information - At the fall Region 8 Assembly meeting I spoke with Tony Lau of the Student Outreach Committee with ASCE national. He has provided the latest student scholarship information and applications to me. If you are interested in this information for yourself or others, please let me know. [email protected]

Membership Drive – ASCE is currently offering a $1000 reward for the section that has the greatest percentage of renewals between now and the end of the year. Our section also has a very large number of “members” that have not paid dues in the recent past. Now is the time to renew! Please take the time to renew your membership before the end of the year and encourage those around you to do the same.

Thanks again to everyone who volunteers in our Section and Branches. We appreciate all you do. We look forward to seeing all of you throughout the month at ASCE activities and luncheons.

We appreciate all of those that participated in the United Way Day of Caring on September 11. I’m sure those that received the service appreciate you more than you know.

We had a good opening social at Willow Park that evening and it was good to meet some new faces.

We’d like to thank Ryan Horsley from ADS for coming to Logan and presenting new products at Pizza Pie Café on September 18.

For October, we will be privileged to hear from Dr. Mac McKee, Director of the Utah Water Research Laboratory at Utah State University. Dr. McKee will be doing a presentation on the work that USU has been doing with drones or UAVs. These drones were developed to monitor water resources in the state, where 85% is diverted toward irrigating

agriculture. The AggieAir Flying Circus is … a team of researchers, developers, navigators and UAV pilots at USU who obtaining authorization from the FAA to fly UAVs domestically. While other UAVs designed for the homeland cost as much as $150,000 per aircraft, the AggieAir fleet are under $10,000 apiece. And more are on the way. (http://www.engineering.usu.edu/htm/news/articleID=17052)

This presentation will be held at 12:00 noon at the Utah Water Research Lab on Wednesday, October 15 in the large conference room on the 3rd floor. Lunch will be provided for a cost of $10 per attendee – please bring cash. Seating is limited to 25 people at the lab, so please RSVP as soon as possible to Justin Maughan at [email protected] if you plan to attend.

Next month we are planning to hear from Malgorzata (Maggie) Rycewics-Borecki, Assistant professor at USU, who will do a presentation on the work she has been doing with Nutrient Uptake by wetland plants in association with storm water treatment. Details will follow in next month’s newsletter.

If you have a topic of interest or would be willing to do a future presentation, p l e a s e c o n t a c t m e a t [email protected]. Thank you!

Welcome to October, the only month you can watch a baseball game, a football game and a basketball game…you could say that life is pretty good this time of year. Life has been pretty good for the Wasatch Front Branch. We have had a couple of successful luncheons. We were pleased to hear from Ben Wuthrich and Ned Hacker of the Wasatch Front Regional Council at the September luncheon. Ben and Ned spoke about transportation funding and the 2040 transportation plan for the Wasatch Front. The projections for transportation and growth along the front look to certainly keep us busy designing and constructing for many years to come.

As we look forward, we are excited to hear from Cliff Linford and Steve Hansen from Sunrise Engineering for our October luncheon. They will be

reviewing the design and construction of the Ogden Water Treatment Plant, which is currently being constructed in Ogden Canyon below Pineview Reservoir. The November luncheon will be held at Salt Lake Community College Redwood Campus. The luncheon topic will be presented by the Sustainability Committee on the Envision Sustainable Infrastructure Rating process.

The Community Giving Committee is planning a food and/or clothing drive in preparation for the holiday season. We will have more information regarding the drive within the next couple of weeks. If you would like to participate in this good cause send an email with y o u r c o n ta c t i n f o r m a t i o n to [email protected]. Thank you for your support of the branch activities.

The Central Utah Branch would also like to recognize great achievements in Civil Engineering that have been completed in Central Utah. If anyone would like to have a unique structure or infrastructure recognized, please contact of the officers from the Central Utah Branch of ASCE.

We had a great response to our September luncheon. Andy Kirby, P.E., Project Manager for the Provo City Center Temple, presented aspects of the Provo Temple construction. The original structure was built in 1883 to 1898. The design of the original building was by William Harrison Folsom, who also designed and supervised construction of the Manti Temple. The building was used for General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1886 and 1887.

On December 17, 2017, the structure was severely damaged by fire. Until reconstruction could commence, the

exterior walls were stabilized. The exter ior wal ls were or ig inal ly constructed with five layers of brick. The two interior layers were removed and tiers were installed in the three remaining layers. Nine inch diameter piles were used to support the exterior walls as 30 feet of material was removed from below the structure. Excavation for the temple began at the end of 2012. Shallow groundwater was encountered. Rather than maintain a long term dewatering system, the subgrade portion of the structure has been designed as a water proof structure.

At the September luncheon, ASCE Utah Section Engineering Educator of the Year Award was given to Dr. Kevin Franke, Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, BYU. Dr. Franke’s area of specialization is soil m e c h a n i c s a n d g e o t e c h n i c a l e a r t h q u a k e e n g i n e e r i n g a n d foundations.

For our October 16, 2014 luncheon, Kim Struthers, Planning Director for Lehi City, will present details related to t h e c o m me r c i a l d e ve l o p m en t surrounding the intersection of I-15 and SR92, and Thanksgiving Point. Mr. Struthers will also address future planning for the area as it relates to Lehi City’s infrastructure. The lunch will be located at Cabela’s in Lehi.

This last month, the Southern Utah Branch teamed up with the Southern Utah branch of APWA for our annual Southern Utah Conference. We had a great line up of presenters that covered numerous topics from local economics, UDOT t ransportat ion pro jects , Watershed protection, Clark County flood protection and the history of the Santa Clara Bench Canal. The keynote speaker this year was Pat Bagley, a cartoonist for the Salt Lake tribune. It was a great to see some of his work and hear about some of his experiences. We had two days of presentations, an awards banquet, and a golf tournament at Green Springs on the final day. We also offered a two part ADA ramp workshop in the afternoons. This year the ASCE Southern Utah Branch gave out three awards two for community services and one for engineer of the year. We would like to thank these award recipients for their service.

Victor Hasfurther received our community services award. He has a B.S. and Ph.D in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Water Resources from Utah State University. He taught at the University of Wyoming in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering for 30 years. He then moved to St. George and became Department Head and Dean of the School of Science and Technology at Dixie State University and recently retired in January 2014.

Community Service Award, Victor Hasfurther

The other community service award went to Todd Edwards a graduate of Brigham Young University. He started out as a surveyor and then got a job as an engineer with Bush & Gudgell and worked for them for 20 years. He then accepted a position as the Washington County Engineer where he has worked for the past 6 years. Todd also has been the contract City Engineer for Santa Clara City and assisted the city during the 2010 and 2012 flood disasters and also with the City Hillside ordinance and mediation efforts at the Truman Drive Landslide.

Community Service Award, Todd Edwards

The Engineer of year award for 2013 went to Dave Black, he has over 27 years of experience in geotechnical engineering within the states of Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. He is a principal engineer with Rosenberg Associates and is responsible for the coordination and supervision of the Geotechnical Division of the Company. Dave has served on a number of committees,

and played a key role in developing the “City of St. George Standard Specif ications for Design and Construction (2000)”, the City of St. George Ordinance for the “Construction of Rockery Walls”, and recently reviewed the Geologic Hazards Maps and Documents prior to publication by the Utah Geological Survey. He is also a part-time Geology instructor at Dixie State University and has been certified by the Utah Division of Real Estate to teach Geologic Hazard courses.

Engineer of the Year Award, Dave Black

Over all the conference was a great success. I would like to personally thank all of the conference attendees, sponsors, vendors, and presenters for participating in this year’s conference. I would also like to share my appreciation for the Southern Utah Branch of APWA for their work on putting the conference together and letting us be a part of it.

We will be looking for outstanding projects and people for the year 2014 so if you have any projects or know somebody that you would like to nominate please contact us. We will be looking for projects and people in the following categories: Engineer of the Year, Community Service, Engineering Innovation, and Outstanding Civil engineering Project. We are currently working on putting an event together for this month so watch for an email with the information.

Anthony Schmid, S.E.

As Northern Utah began to welcome fall, the Young Member Forum (YMF) took off to Zion National Park for one last taste of summer. Spending three nights at the Watchman campground, our group of 25+ younger members, families, and friends truly had a great adventure. Mountain biking, Horseback riding, Hiking the iconic Angel’s Landing, Narrows, and Emerald Pools trails, driving through the ASCE National Historic Landmark Mt. Carmel Tunnel, socializing around a group campfire, and playing catchphrase in the “McMansion” tent during a rain delay. Thank you to all of the individuals who helped make this trip such a great time!

The PE Exam is less than a month away, October 24th!!! The YMF sponsored PE Review course is in full swing and participants are preparing to take the next step to become tomorrow’s Professional Engineers. For those of you preparing, the YMF wishes you the best!
