TRANSDERMAL PRODUCTS OFFER A NEW APPROACH TO MEDICAL MARIJUANA
Humans have used cannabis for an estimated 10,000 years. In that time, there have only been a few innovations in how the plant is used. Denver-based Mary’s Medicinals has revolutionized cannabis medicine with the introduction of transdermal cannabis products, including patches, gels and compounds.
The Company’s flagship product, its transdermal patch, is just like a nicotine or fentanyl patch. It allows for an accurate dose of cannabis medicine to be delivered directly to the bloodstream. The effects are felt rapidly, usually within fifteen minutes and lasting up to twelve hours. Additionally, transdermal delivery allows for optimal bioavailability that avoids first pass metabolisam, which kills about 80 percent of any edible through absorption by the liver and breakdown by stomach acid. As such, Mary’s low dose products can be up to 10x more effective than other infused medibles.
“We manufacture patches with 10 and 20 milligram doses,” said Nicole Smith, founder and CEO of Mary’s Medicinals. “They contain carrier agents comprised of omega fatty acids and terpenes that allow the cannabinoid profile in each product to cross the blood brain barrier.”
“Many patients today want an alternative pain medication that offers the benefits of cannabis, but doesn’t alter their mental capacity or ability to function,” said Smith. “Seventy percent of the products we make are non-psychotropic for just that reason. We have patients from two to 92, and they all have different needs and have one thing in common – they don’t want to be ‘high’.”
Smith likes to highlight the story of a young woman attaining relief from absence seizures with less than one patch per day. She went from having ninety seizures every day to less than ten with help from Mary’s non-psychotropic CBD and THC-A products.
“This is about the intersection of horticulture and technology,” Smith explains. “There is a smart marriage between the two – what can’t be accomplished consistently in the plant can be perfected in the lab to create accuracy and consistency. We never forget that while we rely on our patients for our livelihood, many of them are relying us for so much more.”
“When you do good work, good things happen,” said Smith.

Every generation has its signature drink.
In the ’50s you weren’t a man if you didn’t drink martinis. In the ’60s, commercial air travel allowed travelers an easier ride to the Hawaiian Islands where the Blue Hawaiian was born, brought back from the Pacific like a souvenir across American culture. Then the ’70s fascinated us with the creation of the Harvey Wall-banger, a drink made of vodka, orange juice, and an herbal liqueur called Galliano.
By the time Jaegermeister came around to please crowds of young partygoers, there was already an avid market for the next popular drink. Or shot, whichever you may prefer. There are al-ways new and exciting cocktails making their way through club culture.
In today’s world of the young and sleepless, one of the more favored shots of liquor is Fireball Cinnamon Whisky — a cin-namon-flavored whiskey that burns and tastes like one of those Atomic Fireball candies most of us ate when we were kids.
The immediate reaction is exactly what a good shot should be, with a bright flavor of cinnamon and a subtle whiskey burn that you feel all the way down into your belly. The effect is an eye-open-ing shot of liquor that tingles your scalp and makes you feel alive, warming you from the inside.
Many celebrations can be had around a bottle of Fireball whis-key. It adds the right amount of excitement to any situation and has
the enhancing effects of an energy drink. It’s also light on proof, 66 to be exact, making the alcohol percentage on the low end at 33. So you can enjoy shot-after-shot with friends and colleagues and still be able to see straight enough to enjoy your evening.
It seems every bar in Denver these days is keeping a bottle of Fireball on ice, ready to be served in quantity to those looking for an eye-opening shot of whiskey fire. And since the cinnamon overpowers the famous sting of whiskey, the liquor is favorable to most people — even those who don’t prefer the wince and burn of a good shot of whiskey.
But don’t worry if the cinnamon is too much for you (which it can be for many people). You can cool the shot down by mixing it with a little Jaegermeister. The sweet licorice flavor of the Jae-ger matches surprisingly well with the cinnamon and makes for a smooth combination that pleases almost everybody.
And for those who can’t stand the flavor of candied cinnamon at all, there’s always the legendary vodka Red Bull, continuing to hold its title as a popular club drink well into the second decade of the 21st century. The energy-enhancing effect of the Red Bull and the loosening attitude of the vodka come together and create a drink that’s both tasty and energizing. It’ll keep your hips swing-ing and your eyelids open, so you won’t miss one minute of your favorite band, DJ, or dancing queen.
So whether it is Fireball shots with or without Jaegermeister, or the heavyweight champion, vodka Red Bull, you can be sure to find these selections at any nightclub in Denver.Ci

What’s better than an open-mic night on a weekday night? Nothing. That’s what. Check out these bars scattered around the Denver area where you can get a taste of up-and-coming acts while they’re still up-and-coming.
Ziggie’s live music
4923 W. 38th Ave. Denver 303-455-9930 Sundays: Blues Jam, 7 p.m. Mondays: Acoustic, 8 p.m. Wednesdays: Open Jam, 8:30 p.m. (or after poetry)
Ziggie’s is celebrating 50 years of being the longest-running and best blues jam bar in the country, and you can hear why (or show off your skills) every Sunday night. Blues aren’t your thing? That’s OK, because they’ve got open-mic acoustic jams on Mondays and Hump Day Jam on Wednesday, where you can groove to everything from rock to zydeco; there’s something for everyone here.
lOcal 46
4586 Tennyson St. Denver 720-524-3792 Mondays: 8 p.m.
What used to be the Music Box has turned into a modern-day “Cheers.” When the owners of Local 46 created the new bar they decided to keep things lo-cal, with an eco-friendly twist, and have become a Berkeley hotspot. They host an open stage every Monday night, where you can hear anything from jazz to new-age pop while chatting up the friendly locals
and staff or showing off your skills at cornhole.
liNcOlN’s rOadhOuse
1201 S. Pearl St. Denver 303-777-3700 Wednesdays: 9 p.m.
If you’re a fan of music without the auto-tune and bands that actually know how to play the guitar, Lincoln’s Roadhouse is right up your alley. The bar, located west of Washington Park, pulls in a large college crowd from the University of Denver, but there’s a great at-mosphere for everyone here. They offer an entirely acoustic mix of music every Wednes-day night.
BushwacKer’s salOON
1967 S. Broadway Denver 303-722-0280 Wednesdays: 8 p.m.
Billed as “the place where grown-ups go to play,” Bush-wacker’s Saloon definitely lives up to its reputation as a local dive bar. From the eclectic dec-orations to the uber-friendly staff and biker clientele, it’s hard not to have a rockin’ time here. Wednesday nights Bush-wacker’s open the stage to lo-cal musicians to show off their skills in rock, metal and even blues.
dada art Bar
2470 Broadway, Unit 103 Denver 720-350-4716 Wednesdays: 7 p.m.
DADA is a place for connois-seurs of fine art and music, alike. It probably doesn’t hurt if you’ve got the hipster vibe go-
ing for you, too. The laid-back and welcoming atmosphere is exemplified Wednesday nights, when they play host to a variety of open-mic per-formers, from live musicians to comedy shows and even bur-lesque.
riffs
10151 W. 26th Ave. Wheat Ridge 720-550-6652
Thursdays: 8 p.m.
The owner of Riffs also runs Jake’s Roadhouse in Arvada, so you know the food here is good. They also have 17 beers on tap for you to enjoy while you listen to open-mic blues jams on Thursday nights. Riffs is actually a rock-’n’-roll bar, so don’t be too surprised if you hear a little electric guitar slip in there, too.

When seed catalogs come out in the early spring, eager gardeners can be spotted trudg-ing through the snow to plan out where they’ll plant their zucchini and zinnias. And after a long, hot August of weeding and watering, many gardeners pick their final harvest and let the cooling temperatures and first blanket of frost lull their garden to sleep for the season.
Here in Colorado, however, putting a gar-den to bed properly for the winter can be just as important as waking it up in the spring. A few simple steps taken this autumn can lead to an easier, more bountiful harvest next year.
Clean upWhile leaving a bit of stubble from harvest-
ed crops is becoming more common in field crops to prevent soil erosion, it causes more harm than good in a home garden. Pests and diseases, such as aphids and powdery mildew, are able to winter over in Colorado as eggs and spores, and leaving old tomato plants and squash stems in your garden beds give them a place to wait out the winter months under
the snow.
After the first frosts, pull out all your leftover crop material and throw it on the compost pile. The exception to this is any bean or pea plants. Legumes — members of the Fabaceae family — are able to add necessary nitrogen to the soil using a symbiotic relationship with soil bacte-ria around their roots. Snip these off at the soil level and leave the roots and their helpful bac-teria in the ground for next spring.
Add compostAs your garden grows, plants take up nutri-
ents such as nitrogen, phosphorous and potas-sium in large quantities, along with smaller amounts of other micronutrients such as mag-nesium and iron. Different plants need differ-ent amounts of these essential elements, which is why it’s a good idea to rotate crops from year to year between heavy feeders, such as garden greens and tomatoes, and lighter feeders like beets and other root crops.
Adding compost to the top of your garden beds each year is a great way to make nutrients more available for all crops. A 3-inch layer laid down in the fall will break down slowly over
the winter and improve both fertility and wa-ter-holding capabilities for plant roots later on. Spreading compost in the fall rather than the spring means fresh compost will not “burn” tender seedlings with high levels of ammonia.
Use mulchMany people think mulch is only for peren-
nial beds and under trees, but a heavy layer of leaves or grass clippings on top of your composted beds will hold in moisture, keep temperature more constant and prevent weed seeds from taking hold in your vegetable gar-den as well.
Rather than bagging them, spread fallen leaves thickly onto your beds and let them sit through the winter. They will not break down much but will be easy to rake back in a thick layer and compost in the spring, exposing warmer and more nutrient-rich soil for plant-ing in March.
Not only will this method protect your gar-den soil, it will save your back from all the bag-ging and raking and give you time to sit back and enjoy your bountiful back yard.

As summer ends and autumn begins, temperatures throughout Colorado begin to fall, and soon long-sleeve shirts, pants, sweat-ers and jackets become everyone’s clothing items of choice. As a re-sult, the tan you worked so hard to achieve during the warm sum-mer months will be virtually in-visible because it will be hidden under layers of clothing.
Knowing this, is it really worthwhile to maintain your tan during Colorado’s cold months? Nobody’s going to see it any-way, right?
It’s almost impossible to naturally sustain tan skin dur-ing the fall, winter and spring in C o l o r a d o. The weather is simply too cold to lie out-side on a beach chair in a bath-ing suit, slathered in tanning oil, from September through May. But despite the fact that outdoor tanning is not an option in Colorado for many months out of the year, people often opt for other tan-ning methods so they can main-tain their golden-toned skin year round. However, it’s important to keep in mind that some types of tanning mechanisms are much safer than others.
Earlier this year, the federal Food and Drug Administration
issued a final order that reclas-sified sunlamp products (which include tanning beds) as “mod-erate-risk” devices. Also, the FDA is now requiring that a highly vis-ible warning label be placed on all sunlamp products.
T h e
w a r n -ing label will specifically state that nobody under the age of 18 should use any type of sunlamp due to the risk to the user’s health. With their new FDA classification, it’s highly pos-sible that the popularity of tan-
ning beds will drop significantly for people of all ages. So what are your other choices?
If achieving tan skin is a top priority for you, even when the
weather is cold, y o u r
goal is entirely possible.
And you can even attain golden-toned skin while avoiding po-tentially harmful tanning salons, sunlamps, and other damaging ultraviolet radiation exposure.
Here are three of the most pop-ular sunless tanning methods that don’t involve exposure to danger-ous radiation:
The first option is spray tan-ning. It’s possible to spray-tan your entire body to achieve any level of golden-toned skin that you desire (from light to dark). You can apply a spray tan yourself,
or you can opt for a profession-al application.
Another option is tanning towels. Many
beauty brands man-ufacture these
products. The towels are pre-soaked with a sunless tan-ning prod-uct that can be easily applied to your face, legs, or en-tire body.
F i n a l l y , there is sun-
less tanning lotion. This
product is easy to use. Simply
purchase a bottle (which is relatively
inexpensive), and rub it into your skin. Most
brands of sunless tanning lo-tion begin tanning your skin on
contact. You can use as little or as much as you want, depending on the skin tone you desire.
If you want to keep your skin tan, look into these methods to achieve your goal safely. You can have skin that is tan-looking all year round without the risk in-volved with UV exposure.
