1 What happens when two badass bike shows combine forces? The badass quotient goes

off the charts! And that’s what you’ll get when the Top Builder Competition meets Hot Bike’s Winner Take All Show presented by Sailor Jerry, on Tuesday, August 5 at the CrossRoads. Over the last three months, builders submitted custom bikes online in two distinct classes: The Kinetik Pro Audio Class where audio prowess is king, and the Adventure Power Class where bling and radical styling rule. Now that fan voting has ended, those 16 finalists will join the Hot Bike show to be judged by industry experts as they compete with entrants on site for the $5000 prize and the opportunity to represent as the champ in the 2015 Top Builder marketing campaign. Said Buffalo Chip President Rod Woodruff, “This unique event not only gives fans the chance to get an up-close-and personal look at the world’s top custom bikes but it also gives them great ideas on how to customize their own motorcycles.” The show is open to American V-Twin customs. Be there! It’s two, two, two bike shows in one!

Why do you ride?My husband (Olympic Medalist Lloyd Eisner) has been riding for 40 years. So I got this bug to get a Spyder, a three-wheeler. I felt safe and comfortable on it as a new mom and I fell in love with the whole feeling of being on the road. I rode it for a year and a half and I was on the phone with Woody one day and we were talking about motorcycles. I said I was thinking of getting off the spider and asked him if he thought Victory made a three-wheeler. And he said, “Kristy, just get on two wheels, go take the course and see how you feel, what do you have to lose?” My husband was saying the same thing, so I did! It was really Woody and my husband who inspired me to get on two wheels. I borrowed a Victory in Sturgis two years ago and fell in love with the feel and look of it. I’m comfortable on it.

That’s so important, right? It really is. A motorcycle is kind of like a bra, it has to fit you right. If you’re not wearing the right size it doesn’t look good, it’s uncomfortable and you can be pretty sure something bad will happen. (laughs)

Has anything surprised you about riding?I never expected to be part of the motorcycle world. As an actor I’m sort of protected, I live a life of being careful. This is on the edge, it’s aggressive and it’s been exciting for me. I’ve met some really great people. I can’t wait to get to be there in Sturgis again.

Tell us about the Playboy feature in 2002?It was a good experience. I art directed and produced it myself. I chose where I wanted to shoot and who was going to do it. I

didn’t allow them to pay me until I saw the final images and we turned them over to Playboy. It was funny, Hugh Heffner told me there were Swansons in his family!

So are you two related? Here’s what happened: in the mid ‘90s I was up at the Playboy mansion shooting The Phantom. It was the first time the mansion was ever used in a film and it fit because the film was set in the 1930s. I was in costume, driving a vintage vehicle up the driveway and there he was. He looked at me and said, “Swanson, Swanson, you know my mother’s maiden name was Swanson. Where are you from? I told him the Midwest, Chicago. He said he was, too! I don’t know maybe we are related.

We’re crazy about David Uhl’s new painting featuring you called, “The Huntress.”Oh, he’s so incredibly talented! I’m honored to be in one of his paintings. It’s like I can check that off my bucket list now! It took us about nine months to figure out when and how to work it out but we finally did.

With the painting’s gothic theme, it takes you back to your vampire days.It does! Hmmm. Maybe I need to talk to Victory about a new model design for me: The Victory Vamp – as in Vampire!

Join Indian Motorcycle as they host a party on Sunday, August 3 at the Buffalo Chip, the Largest Music Festival in Motorcycling™. In addition to southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd performing live on the Chip’s main stage, Indian Motorcycle will take the stage as well to celebrate and showcase its all-new 2015 Indian lineup. For 2015, along with the three prior models—The Chieftan, Chief Classic and Chief Vintage—Indian adds the Roadmaster, their priciest model yet at $26, 999 and made for touring. If you’ve visited the Russ Brown Event Center near the Buffalo Chip east gate in prior years, you’ll recognize the work of artist Marc Lacourciere. Marc is back again and he’s looking for riders to represent in his next Legend Rider Series painting. He produces a new painting each year to honor and support the Buffalo Chip Legends Ride and donates a print each time to the Legends Ride charity auction. The Legends Ride benefits Black Hills Special Olympics and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame. Marc’s “casting call” is in preparation for the piece he’ll be unveiling in 2015 and that’s the big one folks, the 75th Anniversary piece! “The Legend Rider I is the image that started it all,” he said. “This print was very successful so I started a complete series. If you plan to collect them all, this is the place to start.” In addition to the Legend Rider Series, Marc’s gearhead tendencies are further revealed by his other work seen at MotorMarcArt.com. But that’s only half of Marc’s story. Marc’s latest series at his MusicFineArt.com site features the crowning names in rock n’ roll history,

from The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, to a wide variety of musicians and bands. He strives to capture the very essence of the performers through precise expressions and performance gestures. Marc began painting as a child in his native Canada. He has since become one of the most sought after fine artists by combining his passions for music, motorcycles and art to create astounding expressions of motorcycle riding and musical performance art. His work has been featured on major TV networks and in high profile publications across North America. Marc also accepts commissions on an individual basis. Look for his work at www.musicfineart.com, www.motormarcart.com and during the Sturgis Rally at the Buffalo Chip’s Russ Brown Event Center. Admission to the gallery is free. And if you think you’re model material, men and women riders can meet Marc every morning, August 1-10, from 9-10:00 AM at Black Hills Harley-Davidson for a casting call.

Riding Time: Two HoursTotal Distance =40 milesHighlights: Wildlife Loop Road

Skill Level: Moderate

The Custer State Park Ride covers the 18-mile Wildlife Loop Road and it is the only ride that stays within the boundaries of Custer State Park. The shortest of the Black Hills Motorcycle Rides, this trip starts at the State Game Lodge (on Hwy 16), one of three resorts within the park. This stately lodge is on the National Register of Historic Places as President Calvin Coolidge made it his "Summer White House" in 1927. This 18-mile loop features the Wildlife Loop Visitor Center, managed by the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife including pronghorn antelope, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, buffalo and mountain lions. The Wildlife Loop is a well-maintained and well-marked paved road, as well as a popular and busy ride where you can expect traffic. Riders often stop suddenly to take photos of the scenery and wildlife. Although there are plenty of turn-offs for sightseeing, be alert for those sudden traffic stops, as well as for animals that venture onto the road. It is not unusual to encounter a roadblock of

grazing bison along the Wildlife Loop. A herd of 1,500 buffalo, one of the largest herds in the world, roam the park freely and often stop traffic along the way. As they can be unpredictable and dangerous, stay on your bike and do not approach them. The loop will bring you back to Hwy 87. Turn right and enjoy a beautiful stretch of road running north past Blue Bell Lodge. Hwy 87 intersects with Hwy 16 in just a few miles. Turn right on Hwy 16 and ride back towards the Game Lodge. You can exit the park several different ways. Just past the Game Lodge on Hwy 16 is the east entrance where you can take Hwy 36 to Hwy 79 and ride north 20 miles to Rapid City. At that same east entrance, you can stay on Hwy 16, which turns into Iron Mountain Road, and ride 17 miles to Keystone. Another route out of the park is to take Hwy 16 west to Hwy 87, the Needles Highway, which exits the park at Sylvan Lake and heads to Hwy 385 and Hill City. Black Hills Motorcycle Rides by Paul Mitchell is a concise yet detailed guide written by a veteran rider and writer. http://www.blackhillsmotorcyclerides.com. Copies are available at the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads in the Chamber of Commerce trailer.

Even in the midst of a throwdown bike rally like Sturgis, or maybe because of it, rally goers sometimes find they need a break, a few restful minutes to offload concerns and fuel up for another day. You can find all that at the Sons of Light Motorcycle Ministry in the Church of the Chip tent at the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads. The Sons of Light Ministry travel the country proclaiming the gospel, focusing specifically on the biker community. So along with free pancakes and plenty of hot coffee to get the day going you’re likely to meet other like-minded individuals looking for a break and few cheerful words. It’s completely informal and everyone is welcome. Just bring an empty stomach and an open mind. Breakfast is free! Enjoy pancakes and fellowship at the tent with the blue and white striped top each morning from 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM through August 11. When the rally kicks into overdrive but you want to kick back, head to the Church of the Chip at the CrossRoads.

Is it all bluster or does John Shope have what it takes? Decide for yourself when Shope, owner of Dirty Bird Concepts and one of five builders on the History Channel’s Biker Battleground Phoenix, reveals the motorcycle he built for the show on the Buffalo Chip’s main stage Sunday night. And yes, History Channel executives will

be on site filming the bike reveal in front of and among thousands of fans in the Chip amphitheater. Shope seems to invite controversy with his mountain-sized confidence and fierce swagger. A one-time ally of Paul Yaffe, Shope is unabashed with his trash talk but the proof is in the craftsmanship. On that score, he worked as an artist and sculptor before he got into bikes so he just may have the artistic chops to score a winner. Be there between music sets with Collective Soul and Lynyrd Skynyrd to see if Shope can back up all the bragging. Can he produce a custom bagger that not only dazzles with searing good looks but also functions with primal power and reliability? We’ll all know when the cover comes off!

When Bobby and Elisa Seeger of Indian Larry Motorcycles lost their young son to ALD, it was a heartbreak felt throughout the motorcycle industry. Since then, Bobby and Elisa have worked to bring awareness to this insidious neurological disease that most severely affects young boys and generally goes undiagnosed. Thanks to their efforts, Aidan’s Law, which insists on compulsory screening of newborns for ALD, passed in New York State in March of 2013, but there’s still work to do in the rest of the country. Here at Sturgis, in the Buffalo Chip’s Russ Brown Event Center, you’ll find a display of 4” x 4” artwork, some by people you know such as David Uhl and

Pat Simmons, others by emerging artists. Once you choose a piece for $50, the artist will be revealed to you. No matter the results, children and families affected by ALD will win, and you will too. All proceeds support the mission of the Aidan Jack Seeger Foundation which are: to advocate for ALD newborn screening nationally; to gather and provide current, functional information and provide financial support to families affected by ALD; to fund research efforts that will identify new treatments, therapies and ultimately a cure for ALD; and to raise awareness of ALD and increasing probability of early detection and treatment.

Entry to the Buffalo Chip’s Russ Brown Event Center is FREE and open from 2:00 to 10:00 PM Saturday through Friday. Head to the Buffalo Chip and turn left on Alkali Road to the EAST entrance. The gallery is next to the EAST entrance and does not require a ticket or wristband to enter. Buffalo Chip campers may enter from inside the campground.

1912 Flying Merkel The 1912 catalog from the Miami Cycle & Manufacturing Company in Middleton, Ohio touts the company’s Flying Merkel motorcycle as “The Only Motorcycle with a Spring Frame and a Spring Fork.” While the Flying Merkel is one of the most sought-after antiques around today, in 1912, it was just one of dozens of motorcycles being produced in the United States. The Miami Cycle & Manufacturing Company was

actually the third company to produce the Flying Merkel. Originally created by Joseph Merkel in 1902, he sold the company to the Light Manufacturing Company in 1909, then it sold again to the Miami company in 1911. Despite the fact that it was a relatively small brand, it still became well-known for innovative designs and excellent engineering. The company also enjoyed great success in the racing world.

This 1912 Flying Merkel racer was over two years in the making after about 10 years of collecting parts to put it together. The original motor cases were found at the Oley Swap meet a number of years ago. Other original parts include the carburetor and the magneto. It is on loan to the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum for a limited time.

grit, grunt and traditionoutlaw truck & tractor PullS coMe to SturgiS With 50 events a year, the people that run and compete in Outlaw Truck & Tractor Pulling don’t get much downtime. But that’s changing this year as they bring the brute power of their sport to the Buffalo Chip’s new PowerSports Complex (PSC), Sunday and Monday, August 3-4. “This is our first time in Sturgis and we’ll be the very first event in the brand new motorsports complex,” said Doug Roberts, President of the Outlaw Truck & Tractor Pulling Association. “We’re excited about it.” This is the association’s 32nd year. They have 250 competitors from 17 different states and the purse this season is a million and a half dollars. Though the sport has often been televised, Doug says tractor pull is one of those sports that TV doesn’t do justice to. “Tractor pull is really a good spectator sport. Fans like the sound, the smell, and the feel when you’re at a live event, you really have to be there.” Now, Sturgis rally goers have that opportunity. Truck and tractor teams compete by pulling a sled of set weight down a 300-foot track. Due to

weight transfer, the further the vehicle pulls the sled the harder it gets. Two-wheel and four-wheel drive trucks and tractors compete in six classes. You’ve never seen anything like the big Modified Tractors featuring 3 Chevy or 2 hemi engines, aircraft, turbine and industrial engines. This pull runs two days on two tracks, with a 12 x 16 foot jumbotron to show replays, slow motion and standings. According to Doug a lot of the pullers have never been to the Sturgis Rally because of their grueling schedule. “Our sled operator rides a Harley but he’s never been able to go to Sturgis, we’re always pulling. Now that we’re having a pull in Sturgis he gets to go to work and play a little bit too.” And he’s not the only one. “We all have a couple days to goof off while we’re here. It worked out good.” Meanwhile, Outlaw pulling events are being filmed by the Velocity Channel and will air for 12 weeks, starting in October. Visit www.outlawpulling.com

All events at the Buffalo Chip PowerSports Complex are open to the public and separately ticketed. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.BuffaloChip.com. Advance tickets are $15 each for Outlaw Pulls.

The Sturgis motorcycle rally draws nearly a half-million visitors to the Black Hills each August, clogging its scenic highways and maxing out motel and hotel rooms, campgrounds, restaurants, parks, monuments and memorials. But its lingering legacy stretches down lonely two-laners and backwater byways and to the tiny towns that time may have forgotten, but which bikers may know well. The Interstate 90 corridor — at 3,100 miles the longest interstate highway in the U.S. — stretches from Seattle to Boston, serving as the primary artery on which two-wheelers and trailers carrying countless bikes travel to the world’s largest motorcycle rally.Still, many others seek a slower pace away from the concrete ribbon, tooling down remote stretches of secondary highways, stopping at national parks and monuments, and making the cash registers ring in even the smallest of America’s communities. As most Sturgis-bound travelers will tell you, the joy is as much in the journey as it is in the bikes, babes, beer and bands that await them upon arrival in the Black Hills. Just across the South Dakota border in Wyoming, on an otherwise quiet stretch of road, the tiny town of Aladdin officially claims 15 residents. But locals, of which there are few, will tell you it’s closer to 10. This year they are most proud that a native daughter, Laramie Noyce, is serving as the poster girl for the Buffalo Chip. The entire town is for sale at $1.5 million, an offer that has made international news, and its Aladdin General Store, one of Wyoming’s five remaining 19th century mercantiles, is the community’s lone place to conduct commerce. Area ranchers have been sipping cream sodas on its front porch and casing its aisles for fishing supplies, groceries, art, beer and hardware since 1896, though lately owner Judy Brengle says ranchers have been opting for the Wal-Mart down the road in Spearfish. Even in this backcountry village, nearly 50 miles from the roar of Main Street in Sturgis, business was so brisk at 10 a.m. last Wednesday that Brengle barely had time to talk. “What does the rally do for the store? A lot, naturally,” she said. “I’ve got so many people waiting in line to check out I can’t even talk right now.” Down the road at America’s first national monument, Devils Tower Trading Post owner Tim Davis last week was bracing himself for an

onslaught of bikers and his biggest week of the year. “It changes and bikers blend in with the tourists three weeks before the rally,” Davis said. “Then it’s all bikes, except for the tourists who don’t know what’s going on.” The rally accounts for 15 percent of the year’s business at the Trading Post and Davis said by this Wednesday, when nearby Hulett hosts its annual Ham & Jam, the entire week is just a blur of bikes, brats, burgers and beer. “It’s hard to even get a count, but so many don’t go into the park. Instead, they just stop by the Trading Post and do some shopping, have a refreshment, then leave,” Davis said. “It’s in the thousands, and I don’t know how many thousands, but it’s a lot.” “You could have ZZ Top performing out back and nobody would know they were playing, it’s so loud,” he joked. In little Lusk, Wyo., 150 miles from the streets of Sturgis, staff at the Fresh Start convenience store said last week that sales already were up 25 percent over last year and that they were handling hundreds of bikers bound for the rally.“It’s our busiest week of the year, always,” said General Manager Tara Mendoza. “It jumps our sales quite a bit and our little town gets pretty full.” With bikers packing the town’s five motels, as well as bars and restaurants, Mendoza said she and her staff go with the flow, fill coolers with ice and beverages, and watch a crowd of travelers fill their gas tanks before heading down U.S. 85 for the Black Hills. “It’s crazy and fun,” she said. “We try to have a good time and just get through it.” The traffic to and from the rally boosts businesses to the east and south of Sturgis as well. Midway across South Dakota, hugging the Missouri River at Oacoma, Al’s Oasis has been welcoming travelers to the American West since 1906. During the weeks surrounding the rally, sales soar as much as 50 percent. “It’s a nice stop before they head out for the final leg of the trip,”

said Operations Manager Dan Wilde. “We have a definite uptick in business throughout our property and some of these people have been stopping for decades.”Further east, at the intersection of Interstates 90 and I-29, the city of Sioux Falls also feels the affects of the Sturgis rally. Jan Grunewaldt, regional director for Regency Hotel Management, which operates 10 hotels in South Dakota as well as four resorts in Custer State Park, said the impact of the rally throughout the state is significant. “Absolutely, we feel the rally at all of our properties,” Grunewaldt said. “We see all the traffic. We see it the week before, we see it the week of and then we see the stragglers.” Staff at Regency’s properties, which include Best Western Ramkota hotels, The Lodge at Deadwood and Cedar Shore Resort, are trained to accommodate bikers with bike-wash stations, hoses, rags and a welcoming attitude because they want them to come back, Grunewaldt said. “We cater to them and we take care of them and we enjoy them,” she said. “We’re thrilled to see them come. They use all of our properties and they’re coming to see one of neatest things our state hosts. It’s our intention to make them friends and we hope to welcome them back again next year.”

The Sturgis Buffalo Chip has partnered with businesses all over the north central United States that are motorcycle rider friendly. Bikers on the way to or from the Sturgis Rally can stop at any of these locations, many of them in small towns where the increase in traffic is appreciated, and be assured of a welcome. More than that, each time bikers encounter a rider friendly business they get to register for a chance to win the Cory Ness- customized Victory 8-Ball motorcycle in the Sturgis Rider Sweepstakes. Enter as many times as you like! It’s a win/win for bikers traveling to Sturgis. You know you’ll be treated right when you visit one of the partner hotels, restaurants, gas stations or convenience stores. These are companies that want your business; some even offer specials just for riders such as a bike wash or bonus. The winner of the Sweepstakes bike will be announced on the Chip’s main stage this Thursday night, between performances of Pop Evil and Train, so you can still enter to win here in Sturgis. Stop at the CrossRoads Chamber of Commerce and Victory display. But even when the winner rides off and you’re headed home, you have the comfort of knowing there are convenient services and friendly faces along the way. If, that is, you stop at Rider Friendly Businesses.

Concerts at the Buffalo Chip are legendary and if your vacation in the Black Hills doesn’t include at least one night in front of the Wolfman Jack stage, you’re missing out. Nowhere else on earth is applause replaced by the revving engines of V-Twin motorcycles, and the selection of bands on offer is broad and eclectic; there’s definitely something for everyone. The good news is there are several ways to not only enjoy the experience but enhance it, too. Your concert ticket gets you among the fans, in the solid vibe of a rockin’ sea of like-minded individuals—and that’s a blast! But if you want to kick it up, there are options. The Chip’s Top Shelf Lounge gives fans a bird’s eye view in a restricted setting to enjoy the concert like a rock star. Located up high, about 135 feet out from center stage it’s the prime spot for both sight and

sound. The cash bar exclusively serves only Top Shelf guests and occupancy is limited to maximize the experience. (You also need a campground admission pass to enjoy the Top Shelf Lounge.) Top Shelf is always in high demand. One trip up to the top and you’ll see why. To get a free taste of the experience Chip campers can stop in for Top Shelf open house, every afternoon during the rally from 5:30 to 6:30. Another option is the Fan VIP Upgrade area, a secured VIP reception space right beside the stage, with access to special viewing areas for concerts and potential opportunities to see or meet the artists. (Remember, you need a campground admission pass to enjoy Fan VIP Upgrade.) Some artists make arrangements for meet & greet events and while there’s no guarantee you’ll connect with them,

you’re in the pool to participate from the VIP section. Admission commences 30 minutes before opening acts take the stage and guests receive complimentary light snacks and beverages. VIPs can also add on either a seat in the Fan VIP Skybox or a spot to stand in the pit in front of the stage. Thinking about going whole hog? Get the total treatment at Fenske Park. This is a special camping package in a secured area where the number of campers is limited and access is restricted. We can’t promise you’ll rub elbows with rock stars but the chance is there, along with serendipitous

opportunities that might happen such as pop in visits from dignitaries and special guests. It’s all about right place, right time at Fenske Park. Fenske Park camping includes food and beverages, all concerts with stage front access (pretty damn close,) a host/hostess, early bird access to the campground, and more. What a way to spend the 75th Rally anniversary in 2015!

Further details for all upgrade experiences can be found at www.buffalochip.com. And a word to the wise: if you’re planning for the 75th, don’t wait!
