MESSAGE FROM OUR POTENTATE CONTINUEDMESSAGE FROM OUR POTENTATE

Noble All – Greetings

Summer Concerts

Again, this year, Moslem Shriners was asked to participate in CD sales at pre-designated concerts and again we came through with shining colors. On Thursday, July 5th, volunteers hit the beautiful Meadow Brook Amphitheatre to sell CD’s of Roger Daltrey from the band Who for the “World’s Greatest Philanthropy”, Shriners Hospitals for Children. Daltrey and his band were joined on stage by the acclaimed Detroit Symphony Orchestra to showcase the beloved classics of the rock opera Tommy that included the hits “Pinball Wizard”, “See Me, Feel Me” and many more. For the evening’s efforts, we sold 220 CD’s. At the end of the day, $1,100 was raised for Shriners Hospitals for Children.

And then on Sunday, July 15th with twelve (12) volunteers adorned in either a Fez or a red Shrine Circus baseball cap we hit DTE Music Theatre with a vengeance to sell as many Foreigner CD’s as possible. Starting at 6pm and ending roughly 9:30pm, the volunteers hit the aisles, the hill, the parking lot and any other place possible to sell a CD. I am proud to announce that the Moslem contingent sold 288 CD’s with a net profit of approximately $1,500 being sent to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

With Lynyrd Skynyrd hitting DTE on Friday, August 10 we have the opportunity to increase the $ amount being sent to Shriners Hospitals for Children – Details to follow.

I cannot express enough my gratitude for all that volunteered at all three concerts this summer. We have shown the Promoters what Moslem volunteers can do and I am sure Moslem will be asked again next year. Once again, my heartfelt thanks.

Shrine Picnic

With 300+ people in attendance, which included 14 of our very special Shrine Patients, we were blessed with beautiful weather, a day full of fun, fellowship and an opportunity to get filled with fine food and beverage. Many thanks to the Hungry 5 for all their grilling efforts that offered hamburgers, hot dogs, brats and this year a pig. Under the watchful eye of Larry Senn, who put the event together, the day went off without issue. Many thanks to the following Units and people that offered time from their day to make the day a success.

In addition, many thanks to all that brought dishes to pass.

Pup Crawl – Summary

On Saturday, August 4th with 30 people in tow, we held the first Pub Crawl for Moslem Shriners. The event held in Wyandotte, MI under the direction of Stefanie Brown, we visited nine (9) Pubs

along the carefully guided route. Starting at the Firehouse Pub & Grill, we then visited Mitten Pub, Bobcat Bonnies, On the Rocks, Joe’s Hamburgers, Silver Ballroom, Whiskey on the River, Dotte Pub, Captains and finally ending where we started at, the Firehouse Pub & Grill. Believe me a FUN time was had by all.

Resignation

It is with regret to inform the members of Moslem Shriners that the Board of Directors has accepted the resignation of Noble Kenric Knecht, High Priest and Prophet, effective immediately. Noble Kenric has accepted a job, which will require him to relocate to Indiana. We all wish him a smooth transition into this new chapter in his life.

As such, he will be unable to fulfill his responsibilities as a Board Member of Moslem Temple. I, along with the Board of Directors wish him well and thank him for his dedicated work as a Board of Director Member for Moslem Temple.

In accordance with the by-laws of Shriners International (Article 25, Section 325.14), as Potentate of Moslem Temple, it is my duty to inform the membership of the following decisions. To backfill the vacancy created by the resignation of Noble Kenric Knecht, I have appointed Oriental Guide, Noble Mike Zelmanski to the position of High Priest and Prophet, effective immediately.

I have called for a SPECIAL ELECTION of Moslem Shriners, to be held at the Stated Meeting, scheduled for Monday, September 10, 2018, at 7:00 P.M. at our Shrine Center, to fill the position of Oriental Guide. At this meeting, nominations for the office of Oriental Guide, which will last until the Annual Elections of the Board of Directors in December, will be taken from the floor. I ask that any member in good standing, that desires nomination, contact the Recorder immediately, in order to facilitate the logistics of preparing for this meeting. Currently there are two candidates that have informed me of their intentions of being nominated, Nobles John Arkles and Tim Lancaster.

This is not an event that any leader desires to occur, and understand there may be questions. I am available to answer any questions, comments and/or concerns by any member of good standing. Please feel free to contact me; I will do my best to provide information to your questions.

Yours in the faith,

FROM CHIEF RABBAN

“Creative Destruction” is a term that is gaining momentum amongst many of those within the automotive field. As a 30-year professional in that field, I hear it in the Research & Development buildings, in the labs, in meetings, and even within the assembly lines where the most modern parts and vehicles are being produced for a global market. It is a term that is usually defined as “a process through which something new brings about the demise of whatever existed before it.” Think of the smartphone in your pocket. It destroyed the need for payphones on street corners and it likely destroyed your need for a landline phone in your home. Think of the GPS found within that smartphone, it destroyed the need for a paper map or the once highly demanded AAA trip tick highlighting your entire trip route. While you may desire that paper map, it is no longer a requirement or in some cases, physically no longer available. So, you are already a direct participant in creative destruction albeit that it may have been without your knowledge at the time.

While the term may be one that insights fear or loathing because it means that something that you have held dear for years may be fading away or morphing into something new, it is a natural progression found within nature, society, and business – think of it in terms of a business model, every business must eventually alter their model in order to maintain any level of success or consumer satisfaction. In other words, just because something works, and it may work well now, it doesn’t mean that it cannot or will not be improved upon and eventually be replaced. This is creative destruction.

Moslem Shrine and Shriners International is, in my opinion, in the stages of creative destruction. The activities, the requirements, the wants, the needs, the desires, and our existence is changing and within these changes, there may be short-term turmoil or discourse amongst the membership, but it must be viewed as a necessary step in our evolution. Look at our Imperial Officers – they are “highly encouraging” that each Temple have their Ladies involved with parades, functions, Shrine Circuses, fundraising, and in attending the first section of our very ceremonials. Twenty years ago, this would have been viewed as heresy to the Fraternity and they would have been voted out of office, if not outright thrown out. But, if you look closely, the Ladies are being treated as the asset that they truly are, and it is an absolute victory for the Shrine as a whole. This is creative destruction.

For Moslem, I am asking that each Noble and Lady take the time to look at the very core of our Temple. Many of you have been around for many more years than I have so you have the insights and knowledge that I am, at times, lacking. I am asking that you look at the events or activities that Moslem has traditionally held. The Shrine Circus, our fundraisers, the dinners and cookouts, the Hospital visits, our membership, all of which are trending in a downward cycle both in terms of volunteering and in paid attendance - and this needs to change for us to survive. Please note that I am fully aware of getting to the point where it seems that the Temple is requiring more and more of your time and effort – selling tickets, working events, etc., so new ideas or approaches may directly help to alleviate this burden.

I am in no way averse to change. Change is to survive so, if you have ideas or you have concerns, I am asking that you bring them to light – if you have knowledge, share it. If an event needs to be altered and / or completely removed from our dossier than it or them, will be. If there are events that would be beneficial to Moslem, then they will be added. I am, however, asking that you approach this request as a business model or SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, or threats) so be prepared to go into some detail on your plan. I am open to any and all ideas, it isn’t a single persons knowledge or ideas that make us, it is the whole that makes us great.

Moslem Shrines members and Ladies are the key to this creative destruction, so help us help the Temple succeed. Jeff Geske Chief Rabban

TheMotor City ShinersTaproom 1 will be having a blowout excursion to Atwater in the Park on November 17th in fabulous Gross Point Parkkicking off at 12:00pm! It’s been a busy year for all of us so come down and let’s enjoy ourselves before the cold days of winter set in. As always, the Ladies are encouraged to come and even if your significant other is not a member or if you would simply like to come with your friends, you are absolutely welcome to attend. Take note that they offer a full beer and food menu to choose from.

Atwater in the Park is located at: 1175 Lakepointe St., Grosse Pointe Park, MI 48230 (313)-344-5104. www.atwaterbeer.com

“Situated on Kercheval & Lakepointe in Grosse Pointe Park’s business district, Atwater in the Park is proudly serving handcrafted beer and spirits. A biergarten and gastropub with a unique and unorthodox dining experience, stop by and try a beer from one of our 40 taps! Housed in the former Grace United Church, Atwater in the Park brings an authentic German brewery feel and comforting pub fare to a quaint corner of Grosse Pointe Park.”

I would also be remise if I did not comment on the turnout this year at the Imperial Convention’s pub crawl in Daytona Beach. Not only were the Motor City Shiners represented during this event, there were at least five other Taprooms from around the country there as well. They were sporting their Taproom shirts and spreading the word on how to get a Taproom started at other Temples. We also made Imperial Sir Mark Hartz – Shriners International’s new Imperial Outer Guard – an honorary lifetime member in Taproom 1. Both he and his Lady Kathy will be sporting their Shiner and Shinette shirts….

To date, we are up to 21 Taprooms located throughout North America and we are continuing to grow. The value that our Clubs add to these other Temples in terms of notoriety, membership, and fellowship is being seen as a true value added experience within the Shrine and Imperial is certainly taking notice. Our website is up and running at www.motorcityshiners.com with all of our pertinent information out there for people to see.

If you are not a member of Moslem Shrines Number 1 club, that’s not a problem. It’s only $20 per year to join, but even if you decide not to, you are welcome to attend our November event.

As always, wear your Shiner gear and promote your Club! Don’t have a Shiner or Shinette shirt? You can order one at Embroidme at 734-281-1500.

“A fine beer can be judged in just one sip…. But it’s better to be thoroughly sure”

CHILDCARE

Hello Nobles

By the time this is read our Sportsman Raffle and the Michigan State Fair will be in the books for another year.

Childcare makes the most of both of these great events. To get the word out of what Shriners Hospitals can do, to help a child with serious medical conditions.

The State Fair is were we get the most attention due to the large number of families that attend the fair. This year we had one of Moslems Childcare Vehicles and the Moslom Blowup Man on Display. Thanks to the Nobles that helped at the Raffle and the state Fair

At the Imperial session in Daytona, a lot of discussion was taking place regarding many of our hospitals. The Shriners Hospitals must adapt or change to keep them open. Our very own Cincinnati Hospital was discussed at great lengths, I encourage all of you to speak with either our Divan members or our Cinnicanti Hospital Reps to get the full details of these events.

In closing I wanted to thank Al Miller ,Chuck Brantley and Gary Compton for Driving the Childcare Vehicles in the Parades. These Vehicles are Moslems rolling advertisement for what we do for kids. The public sees these vehicles and ask questions about our Philanthropy

DAUGHTERS OF THE NILE

Daughters of the Nile

September was a very busy month for us. I appreciate all who attended the Supreme Queen Shirley Henley's visit including the members of Mighty Moslem who came with their wives to support Ahmose Temple and all that we do for the kids in the Shriners' Hospitals. Three days later you were there again for our Annual Card Party, which supports the Daughters of the Nile Foundations' only philanthropy, the Shriners Hospital for Children. Not only did you come, you worked, brought delicious food and donated prizes for our exciting raffles. Your support of Ahmose Temple fills me with gratitude. Thank you.

PQ Marion McLean, PQ Janet Laird and Pr. Pat Cooper have recently taken tumbles. PQ Ismay Osborne had hip surgery and then broke the femur in her same leg. Millie Spaw was also in the hospital but has returned home. Many caring thoughts and prayers are with them. We hope each day finds them feeling better. Remember, there is no speed limit on the road to recovery.

October 1, will be our next Stated Session with lunch at 11:00A.M. and session at noon. The Membership Committee is planning a trip to Frankenmuth on Monday, October 22nd. We will meet at the Shrine Center at 10 A.M. and carpool to Zehnder's where we will meet our Saginaw members for lunch. Please mark your calendars and join us.

While you have your pencils out, mark your calendars for Nov. 1st. lunch at 11 A.M. at Ford's Garage, 21367 Michigan Ave. Dearborn. Our annual Toy Walk for Shriner's Hospital for Children will be on Nov. 12th. Lunch begins at 11A.M. and the Stated Session starts at noon. We always have a nice turnout for the Kids.

Reception Unit

George Staten Greeting to all the Members of the Reception Unit. As I said before, all of the functions that are put on by the Shrine are not only fundraisers, they are for your enjoyment and if you don’t attend them, you are not getting your money’s worth. (To all the Shrine members that don’t belong to a Unit, join with us.) We had another possible new member call and wanted to join our Unit, so Dennis Holstin will be at our meeting in September. Anybody else that wants to join, just call George at 248-828-4151. As you know the Charity Poker and the Wheel Barrow of Cheer fund raisers are the ways that we make money for the Unit to help the Shrine and the Shrine Hospitals and for our subsidies. Anytime we have a fundraiser it is to your benefit that you help in any way you can. Brothers: The Marine City Parade was August 5th. We had a lot of our members at the parade helping different Units. That was fine but we needed (2) to carry the Banner. I was there, where was everybody else? Can’t you drive a few miles and give a few hours of your time for your Unit and Shrine? This job was given to us by the Potentate because he couldn’t get another Unit to do it. He was depending on us. We are letting him down. If you are going to GLSA, we will need (2) and for the Clinton Parade we will need (2) so plan on helping. The Shrine Sportsman Raffle, August the 11th was not well attended but we still made a nice profit on our Wheel Barrow of Cheer Raffle. Come to the meeting in September and see how we did. The Shrine Picnic was July 29th. There was a good crowd and everybody had a good time with lots of food and refreshment. This was put on for your benefit. As you should know by now to be eligible for our subsidies, at the discretion of the Director, paying your dues, attending a meeting at least once a quarter, attending at least (2) of the Shrine functions per year, contribute to the Wheel Barrow of Cheer, working at the Sportsman Raffle or Circus or with our Wheel Barrow of Cheer Raffle are the requirements. Like I said, at the discretion of the Director. Our next meeting will be Monday, September 24th 2018. Come out to the meeting and meet our new members and our new Shrine Member’s and join with us for snacks, refreshments a 50/50 drawing, a door prize and lots of Camaraderie. Brothers, as I said before at one of our meetings of the Reception Unit, a motion was made to pay HALF OF THE FEE of any new Shriner that any Member of the Reception Unit would have join the Shrine with the stipulation that they be an Active member of our Unit for a year. SHRINE LANCERSShrine LancersBy Todd Wyber (Piper T)

Hello Lancers,

I hope all is well with you and your families. It’s hard to believe that Labor Day has already come and gone. By the time you read this, the State Fair and Circus is a distant memory. If you were able to make it to the fair to help/volunteer, thank you for your time and effort. It was a great fair and circus again this year.

We also had fun at the Romeo parade this year. It was sure nice to be back in Romeo. I was able to stock up on some bushels of peaches while I was there. Molly does a great job canning them for the winter months.

The Richmond parade also was a fun time as well. It’s a long parade but the crowd loves the Lancers. Also, at least we don’t have to walk the parade. This parade is at least 1.5 miles long and sitting in the car sure is nice.

We would like to welcome a new guy to the Lancer team. Welcome Adam Michalak to the Lancers! Adam is the son-in-law of Bob O’Brien. He is excited to drive in the parades and we are excited to have him. Welcome aboard Adam!

The annual Shrine Picnic was a great time this year. They added the idea of “pot luck” and we had a great variety of food to go along with what the Shrine/ Hungry 5 provided. All of the food was excellent. The ladies also did an outstanding job entertaining the kids. They had balloon animals, face painting, prizes and stuffed animals for all of the kids, games and more. Thank you ladies for all that you do to make this a great day for all of the children, they truly had a great time, my kids included.

If you were not at the gun raffle, it was another big success. Thank you to all the Lancers that showed up. In the picture are Mike R., Cliff W., Todd W. and John W. Not in the picture but were at the raffle were Matt P., Dave T. and Eugene. We had fun and made a profit at the same time. Thank you to all that showed and sold tickets.

We are parading in the GLSA parade in Grand Rapids on Saturday, Sept. 22nd. We need all able drivers to be there for this parade. If you can’t go to the convention, such as myself, then just come to the parade on Saturday. We need all Lancers there. Thank you.

Upcoming parade schedule: (SP = Shrine Parade and LP = Lancer Parade). See the Lancer emails for details on the times and locations for these parades or call a Lancer.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for allowing me to be the editor for the Lancer articles. It has been a fun experience over the past 4 years or so. It is now time to pass on the torch to the next scribe as my schedule is just a little too heavy for this responsibility at this time. If you would like to become the new editor, please contact Matt P. and he or I can get you started. It’s a fun way to communicate with the nobility on all of the great things happening in the Lancers.

To all NEW and Experienced Shriners, here is your chance. If you have been looking for that one unit that you would like to belong to, look no further. Come to the Lancer room on the first Monday of each month and meet the guys. You will have the time of your life driving a Lancer car in the parades. Contact Matt P. or Dave Talbot for information and make a decision that I know you won’t regret. Come join one of the fastest growing units in Moslem and become a Lancer today!

Until next time, keep your engines runnin.

PAST MASTERS“Noble’s Pride”by Noble Ben R. Steen, 1995,

When I look around at my life in the shrine, many things I cherish stand out in my mind.

Hospitals for the children who can’t run and play, bring hope to the families, in so many ways.

A crippled or burned child gets first-rate care, and there’s never a charge for any child there.

And I’m proud of our circus, that’s part of the shrine. It brings out the child in all of our minds.

There are three kinds of people. Those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who say, what happened.

Thanks to our Illustrious Potentate Robert O’Brien and his Staff headed by Oriental Guide Mike Zelmanski for putting together a great Sportsman’s Raffle on August 11th. There was a very good turnout and everyone enjoyed the food, refreshments and fellowship. The Past Master Unit raffled off a 5,500 Watt Dual Fuel Electric start Portable Generator which was won by a Mr. Mike McDonough. Thank you to all those who helped man the booth and selling the tickets.

Happy October Birthday’s to W.B. Peter Rowe who will be celebrating his Birthday on October 20th and to W.B. Robin Handelman who will be celebrating his Birthday on October 28th.

We will be taking the Past Master float to the Clinton Parade on September 30th and the parade steps off at 2:30 P.M. Please come and join us and see our beautiful float that has been modernized by W.B. Bill Betz and his Sons..

The October Past Master Unit meeting will be held at the Shrine Center on Monday, October 15th starting promptly at 7:00 P.M. at the Shrine Center.

Worshipful Brothers, please come and support your Unit in all these endeavors.

John Thornhill, P.P. Director

I’ll stand with my brothers, and salute our flag, be it brand new, or tattered and sagged.

‘Cause it’s heavily entwined, in our lodge of blue it stands for our freedom and the religion we choose.

We’re from many backgrounds and different lifestyles, but we never stand taller than when we stoop to help a child.

Yes, I’m proud to be a Shriner, and I love the parades, ‘cause children’s laughter, is what I get paid.

Nobles All – Greetings

I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks and appreciation for a job well done. Thank you so much for your labor of love with the recently passed Michigan State Fair / Shrine Circus.

Whether you sold admission tickets, ushered guests in to or out of the Circus, counted guests as they entered, worked the parking lot, scheduled workers or sold raffle tickets, your efforts did not go un-noticed. Your willingness to give of yourself and be away from Bar B Ques and other end of summer functions is an example of your willingness to give.

For all the time, effort and hard work, please accept my sincere thanks. You are truly an inspiration and blessing to Moslem Shriners.

With Sincere Gratitude,

Bob O'Brien
