DesignThe GOE bushing is available in two designs: GOE andGOE(2). The bushing is built up around a centre tube onwhich the condenser body is wound. The condenserbody is wound from insulating paper. For bushings up to550 kV paper of full width is employed. Bushings forhigher voltages are wound from paper strips in a mannersimilar to that used for cables.

The foils are located so that the best possiblecombination of external flashover and internal puncturestrength is achieved.

The upper insulator, which is made in one piece withoutgaskets, the lower insulator and the mounting flange areheld between the end plates by the centre tube andsealing is accomplished by oil-resistant rubber gasketsin grooves.

For GOE 250 to 900 the top housing is equipped withtwo oil level gauges of prisma type. For GOE 1050 andlarger, the top housing is equipped with a magnetic oillevel indicator.

transformers

The mounting flange is an aluminium alloy casting. Thegasket surface is machined flat. On the flange there is atest tap. This tap is automatically earthed by a protectivecap when the tap is not connected to external test ormeasuring circuits. The mounting flange and the tophousing are protected by a two-component grey-bluepaint.

The mounting flange can be equipped with extensionson the oil side, providing space for current transformers.Extension lengths 300 and 600 mm are available asstandard, but other lengths can be quoted on request.

The rated current is defined according to IEC 60137. Itis valid only when the centre tube is used as conductor. For draw lead applications the permissible current willbe lower.

Bushings GOE 450 and larger require a shield at the oilend. The purpose of this shield is to avoid excessiveelectrical stresses in the oil at the lower end plate and atthe connection between the insulated lead from the

transformer winding and the draw lead or otherconductors in the bushing. The maximum stresses inthe oil at the surface of the shield insulation must belimited to those values normal for insulated conductorsand similar components in the same transformer.

ABB manufactures shields of this type, which are quotedfor and delivered separately. The shields are made ofaluminium and are insulated with epoxy or a lining ofpressboard. The shield may be mounted on the lower endplate of the bushing, or on the bottom contact of the drawrod. Dimensions and recommendations, see pages 17,20 and 21.

It is of great importance that the shield is placed in theright position in order to protect the bottom end of thebushing. Guidelines for positioning of the shield aregiven in Figs. 14 and 16. ABB can also provideassistance with field calculations to confirm theperformance of other shielding systems.

Quotations for modifications in design and additionalparts such as special terminal studs, shields, rod gaps, etc., as well as special tests, are given on request.

GOE features

A set of concentric tubes are prestressed and serve assprings which hold the main bushing componentstogether and provide adequate pressure on the gasketsin all expected temperature and load conditions.

The annular space formed between the tubes makes anefficient cooling duct for dissipation of the heat, thus

improving the current-carrying capacity and thermalstability of the bushing.

The bushing is designed to be mounted at an angle notexceeding 60° from the vertical. A higher inclination canbe obtained on request. The current shall be reduced forhorizontal mounting and up to 15° from horizontal.

The top housing is made of aluminium and has expan-sion space for the oil, sufficient for temperaturevariations in the bushing between -40° and +80 °C.Variations in the length of the centre tube and thehousing are compensated by a flexible connectioninside the top housing.

For GOE 1050 and larger, the upper insulator is faste-ned with an additional clamping ring to the mountingflange.

GOE(2) features

A set of springs in the top housing provides adequatepressure on all gaskets, independently of temperatureand load conditions.

The bushing is designed to be mounted at an angle notexceeding 30° from the vertical.

The top housing has expansion space for the oilsufficient for temperature variations in the bushingbetween-40° and +80 °C. Variations in the lenght of thecentre tube are compensated by the flexible cover of thehousing.

For GOE(2) the upper insulator is cemented to a flangewhich is bolted to the mounting flange.

Shed form

The shed form for all GOE bushings is of the anti-fogtype with alternating long and short sheds.

GOE: For each pair of sheds the ratio between nominalcreepage distance and the axial length is 3.43 and theratio between protected and nominal creepage distanceis 0.40.

TestingDuring manufacture and on completion, each bushing issubjected to a number of routine tests, according toIEC 60137 or IEEE bushing standards. A tightness testis carried out on the assembled bushing after the finaldrying and impregnation. The test is made at an oiloverpressure of 180 kPa (1.8 bar) for 12 hours atambient temperature. No sign of leakage is allowed. Theelectrical routine test is carried out at room temperaturewith the lower end of the bushing submerged in oil.Capacitance and tan δ are measured in steps up to thepower frequency withstand voltage, which is maintainedfor one minute.

Capacitance and tan δ are also measured with decrea-sing voltage at the same voltage levels as before the

one minute test. Measurements for detection of internalpartial discharge (PD measurements) are also made. These measurements are carried out at the same time, and at the same levels, as the tan δ test. It is alwaysdemonstrated that the PD value is below 5 pC at ratedvoltage (=√3 times bushing service voltage).

Bushings with BIL level ≥ 850 kV are routine tested witha dry lightning impulse voltage withstand test, whentested according to IEC 60137.

Type tests have been carried out according to bothIEC 60137 and IEEE. Type test reports are available onrequest.

GOE(2): For each pair of sheds the ratio betweennominal creepage distance and the axial length is 3.94and the ratio between protected and nominal creepagedistance is 0.43.

Current capacityThe rated currents specified in this catalogue are basedon thermal tests and are in accordance with IEC 60137and apply to the built-in conductors of the bushings. TheGOE bushings conform to the requirements of IEC60137 and IEEE for currents given in Table 25.

Short-time current

The rated thermal short-time current (Ith), as defined in

IEC 60137 clause 5, is listed in Table 25 for draw rodand fixed bottom end terminal.

For draw lead of stranded copper with the area100 mm2 the short-time current (I

th) is 9.6 kA for

1 second and 6.8 kA for 2 seconds. For other areas theshort-time current is directly proportional to the area. The rated dynamic current (I

d) is 2.5 times the 1 second

short-time current.

Overload capacity of bushings

If the conductor for the bushing is selected with 120 %of the rated current of the transformer, the bushing isconsidered to be able to withstand overload conditionsaccording to IEC 60354 without further clarification ortests. This recommendation complies with IEC 60137.

During installation on thetransformer, the upperend of this rod is bolted toa spring device beneaththe outer terminal, whichconsists of two concentrictubes of differentmaterials and is sodesigned that it gives therequired contact load at alltemperatures.

Fig. 10d.

Bottom contacts with 4 or 6 threaded holes for cable lugsare available. The bottom contacts are made of copperand have rounded edges, so that they may be usedwithout any shield for low insulation levels.

At the level of the flange the draw rod is split into twoparts. If required to meet the transport conditions, wecan position a joint at any desired level below theflange. This must be stated in the order. The lower partwith contact end shield can then be secured to thecover during transport and storage of the transformer. This system has been supplied by ABB since theseventies with an excellent service record and has thefollowing advantages compared to other methods usedfor high currents:

• No hand holes required in the transformer tank.

• Easy bushing installation and removal – no

connection work inside the transformer at site.

• No special supports required in the transformer as is

the case with plug contacts.

• Perfect guiding of the bushing into the transformer.

• The lower end shield may be fixed to the contact and

will thus be correctly positioned with respect to thelower end plate of the bushing.

Outer terminal

The outer terminal consists of a cylindrical stud. Themounting arrangements are the same for all GOEbushings, regardless of size, current rating and internalconnection system. Copper and aluminium studs areavailable.

The terminal stud assembly consists of a stud, aretainer ring, a gasket, bolts and washers. The electricalcontact function and the sealing function are completelyseparated.

The stud is first fastened to the bushing top with M10bolts, which give the proper electrical contact. Thecontact surface is located inside the gasket and is thuswell protected from corrosion. Finally, the retainer ringwith the gasket is pressed against the stud by means ofM8 bolts.

The maximum stresses in the oil at the surface of theshield insulation and the parts surrounding the bushingmust be limited to those values normal for insulatedconductors and other similar components in the sametransformer.

The withstand voltages in a specific case depend uponmany factors beyond control of the bushing manu-facturer. Therefore the configurations and distancesgiven below are only intended as guidelines.

ABB can also provide assistance with field calculationsto confirm the compatibility between the transformer andour bushings.

Types GOE(2)

The maximum stresses in the oil at the surface of theshield insulation and the parts surrounding the bushingmust be limited to those values normal for insulatedconductors and other similar components in the sametransformer.

The withstand voltages in a specific case depend uponmany factors beyond the control of the bushing manu-facturer. Therefore the configurations and distancesgiven below are only intended as guidelines.

ABB can also provide assistance with field calculationsto confirm the compatibility between the transformer andour bushings.
