Who is a PEER?
A peer is a person who is of the same age as you and shares similar interests, likes and hobbies. He may or may not be your friend.

What is PEER PRESSURE?
When your peer or peer group influences /encourages you to do things you may not want to do. They may (often) threaten you that they will not be friends with you if you do not listen to them. They may also say that you are not COOL if you do not do what they want you to.

PEER PRESSURE
Peer pressure can be both negative and positive. For example, if your peer group is asking you to stop abusing substance, bunking classes, or being naughty the pressure is POSITIVE but on the other hand, if your peer is influencing /forcing you to do drugs, drink, bunk etc then it is NEGATIVE PEER PRESSURE.

IMPACTS OF NEGATIVE PEER PRESSURE:
1. Substance abuse and related complexities (Addictions).
2. Irregularity in school and low performance.3. Antisocial behaviours (Vandalisms and crime)4. Bullying and Ragging.5. Corrosion of family bonds.6. Low social status (Loss of confidence and trust)7. Suicides.

IMPACTS OF POSITIVE PEER PRESSURE:
1. Adoption of good habits and giving up of bad habits.
2. Character development.3. Improvement in attendance and performance.4. Improvement in self confidence and
independence.5. Improved social relationships.6. Positive decision making.

WAYS TO RESIST PEER PRESSURE:
1. Say what you think and feel – OWN UP YOUR FEELINGS.
2. REVERSE THE PRESSURE3. AVOID SUCH PEER GROUPS BECAUSE YOUR LIFE IS
MORE IMPORTANT THAN FRIENDSHIP.4. LEARN TO SAY “NO” – THERE ARE MANY WAYS OF
SAYING NO.5. JUST WALK OUT OF THE SITUATION AND PRETEND
YOU HAVEN’T HEARD THEM.6. STICK TO YOUR DECISION.7. BE ASSERTIVE – KNOW YOUR SELF BETTER.8. MOST IMPORTANTLY : USE LIFE SKILLS

FOR BOYS:Dorji, Karma and Thukten are in the same peer
group. Dorji and Thukten have planned to smoke marijuna, and they want Karma to join them. Karma doesn’t want to but he is worried that Dorji and Thukten will get angry and avoid him in future.

FOR GIRLS:Wangmo and Zangmo are good friends. They are
close and listen to each other most of the time. Drakpa is also close to Zangmo. He wants Zangmo to persuade Wangmo to accept him as her boyfriend. Zangmo pressurizes Wangmo and tells her that she will be angry if she doesn’t listen to her.
