The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
Saint Charles Borromeo Parishparma, ohio
Bouguereau, William Adolphe (French). Song of Angels (La Vierge aux anges [Virgin of the Angels]), ca. 1881. Oil on canvas (83⅞ x 59⅞ in). Museum at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, Glendale, California.
The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 27, 2020
Entrance Antiphon The shepherds went in haste, and found Mary and
Joseph and the Infant lying in a manger.
Psalm 105 The Lord remembers his covenant forever.
Genesis 15:1-6, 21:1-3 The word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying: “Fear not, Abram! I am your shield; I will make your reward very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what good will your gifts be, if I keep on being childless and have as my heir the steward of my house, Eliezer?” Abram continued, “See, you have given me no offspring, and so one of my servants will be my heir.” Then the word of the LORD came to him: “No, that one shall not be your heir; your own issue shall be your heir.” The Lord took Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so,” he added, “shall your descendants be.” Abram put his faith in the LORD, who credited it to him as an act of righteousness. The LORD took note of Sarah as he had said he would; he did for her as he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time that God had stated. Abraham gave the name Isaac to this son of his whom Sarah bore him. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Hebrews 11:8, 11-12, 17-19 Brothers and sisters: By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; he went out, not knowing where he was to go. By faith he received power to generate, even though he was past the normal age --and Sarah herself was sterile-- for he thought that the one who had made the promise was trustworthy. So it was that there came forth from one man, himself as good as dead, descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sands on the seashore. By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was ready to offer his only son, of whom it was said, “Through Isaac descendants shall bear your name.” He reasoned that God was able to raise even from the dead, and he received Isaac back as a symbol.
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Luke 2:22-40
When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, They took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord.
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, He took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.”
Glory to God Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,
we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One,
You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ, with the holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father, Amen.
The Liturgy of the Eucharist
Scripture readings and prayers provided by the United States Conference
of Catholic Bishops. Reprinted with permission.
May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name,
for our good and the good of all his holy Church.
Holy
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the
name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection
until you come again.
When we eat this Bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord,
until you come again.
Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection
you have set us free.
Communion Antiphon Our God has appeared on the earth,
and lived among us.
The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 27, 2020
Mystery of Faith Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
“Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted —and you yourself a sword will pierce— so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshiped night and day with fasting and prayer. And coming forward at that very time, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were awaiting the redemption of Jerusalem.
When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

This Week’s Liturgy
2020 “in the Rear View Mirror” January started off well. The kids returned to classes after vacation. Our principal, Eileen Updegrove, and I met together with each of the families applying for our school. The Booster Club “Night at the Races” was a big success. Met and booked wedding dates for several couples engaged over the holidays. It looked like 2020 would be another good year. Sadly, we buried fourteen parishioners. During February we completed the Thursday evening EPIC church history series we began in September. Got a great deal at Axelrod GMC Buick for our 2020 Carnival SUV Grand Prize. Packed Masses for Ash Wednesday. Had first Lenten Friday Fish Fry. News stories about a bad virus in China. Only ten funerals this month. On the first Monday in March we had the monthly Anointing Mass. More news stories about COVID-19. Second Fish Fry. Went to Celtic Ball and Hooley at St. John Vianney Parish! On Friday, March 13, the roof fell in! Attendance at Sunday Mass not obligatory! School classes canceled! St. Patrick’s Day canceled! Fr. Chris Cox produces first St. Charles livestream Mass on Sun-day the 22nd at 11am. Wrote first “plague column.” Began calling parishioners at home on March 30. Lost eight parishioners—graveside services only for the deceased. It was a quiet April. Parish Office closed. No Masses. Only six funerals. Wedding couples moving their dates to fall of 2020, Confirmation postponed. (“I’m sure COVID will be over by then!”) I began doing the shopping and cooking! Intern, Scott Swinerton, returned to Seminary. No Holy Week/Easter services in church. In May learned to ZOOM for meetings! First Communion and Graduation postponed. Canceled Carnival 2020; opted for Parish “Two Step” Raffle. Resumed Masses in church on Pentecost, May 31. Music Director Tom Holzheimer provided excellent music, online and in church, according to new health guidelines. First parish COVID death; eight funerals. June brought a few weddings that were “scaled down” from the original plans. Eleven funerals; two were COVID. Completed 3,500 phone calls to parishioners. Met with Parma Catholic Pastors re: future of schools. Said good-bye to Fr. Lou Thomas, new pastor at St. Andrew in Norton. During July, some families opted for private First Communions at daily Masses. Several weddings postponed. Cleaned offices and files. Brian Pelcin and Cindy Zalek planned a variety of virtual fall programs. Only five funerals. Our Ancient Acolytes took over all Mass-serving duties. During August, we welcomed the newly ordained Father Joshua Cochrac. Two Step Raffle netted $106,000. Our outstand-ing principal, Mrs. Updegrove, provided new training for teachers. Mrs. Leigh coordinated new classes for PSR. A variety of adult education courses were offered for fall. Began another series of phone calls to parishioners. During September, October, November, and December our excellent school leadership kept the kids in the ideal classroom learning environment. We made the best effort to provide proper pastoral care, celebrate social-distanced weddings, funerals, and Masses, offered adult ed opportunities, re-scheduled activities, held necessary gatherings in person, conducted virtual meetings, and “kept the show on the road.” And now, good-bye 2020!

Exodus 90 Men’s SpiritualityBegins January 4
Our society offers many diversions, temptations, and addictions: overwork, alcohol, television binge-watching, infidelity, materialism—all eventually lead to frustration and long-term dissatisfaction. Exodus 90, a nationwide program of men’s spirituality, has led more than 35,000 husbands, fathers, and single men to the freedom of living for the greatest good—at every moment. Exodus 90 offers ninety days of Scripture, guided prayer, Christlike living, and true fraternity. Exodus 90 calls men to the foundations of their faith, lifting unhealthy practices and habits, and igniting a deeper devotion to Christ. Our next Exodus 90 session at St. Charles will commence on January 4 and continue until Easter Sunday.
