1968 OUTLOOKOnly five starters return from North Carolina State’s 1967

Liberty Bowl champions as Earle Edwards must rebuild theWolfpack, which has compiled the best overall record overthe past six years of any team in the Atlantic Coast Confer-ence.One of State’s finest backfields must run behind an offen-

sive line that has only center Carey Metts returning as astarter from the team which compiled an 8-2 regular seasonrecord and which beat Georgia in the Liberty Bowl, 14-7.The defensive unit that gained distinction with its whiteshoes and in yielding the fewest yards in the ACC, has onlytwo members, end Mark Capuano and linebacker Mike Hilka, back from the men who started in the Liberty Bowl. Theentire secondary has graduated.

Lose Two All-AmericasMost of last year’s second units, on both offense and de-

fense, will move up to starting positions for 1968. Seven ofthe 25 lettermen returning are offensive backs, although thePack did lose its top rusher, halfback Tony Barehuk, andtotal offensive leader, quarterback Jim Donnan, among the17 missing lettermen. Two all-Americas, tackle Dennis Byrdand defensive back Fred Combs, and all-ACC choices, Nor-man Gates at guard and end Harry Martel], are also toplosses.

Senior quarterback Jack Klebe, a lefthander, will direct anall-letterman backfield of Bobby Hall and Charlie Bowers atthe halfbacks and senior Settle Dockery at fullback. SeniorsLeon Mason and Jimmy Lisk, along with sophomore JimHardin, give the Pack its best depth ever at halfback. Thisis the quickest set of backs the Pack has had in many years.Junior Art Waleski and sophomore Darrell Moody back upKlebe, while hard-running Dave Rodgers, the top surprise ofthe spring drills, gives excellent support to Dockery.

Line Locks DepthDon Jordan, potentially the finest guard State has had, and

Robby Evans saw a lot of duty last year and move into thestarting offensive guard spots to flank Metts, an exceptionalcenter. Marvin Tharp, a reserve in 1967, and sophomore hold-out Ed Nicholas figure to start at tackle, while Wayne Lewis,a lanky junior with sure hands, and Charlie Tope won firstunit spots at end. Five of the seven men counted on fordepth in the offensive line have never been in a varsity game.

Defensively, State will be led by four of the ACC’s finestin Capuano, all-ACC in 1967; tackle Ron Carpenter; line-backer Hilka: and safety Gary Yount. But depth is again aproblem, with three tentative starters and eight second unitmen completely void of varsity competition.

Experienced TacklesJunior Bob Follweiler will start at the other defensive spot,

with senior Benny Lemmons swing man for both starters.Art Hudson and Carpenter are both experienced tackles.while transfer holdouts Harry Billger and Pete Sowirka addreserve strength. Middle guard, in the Pack’s 5-4 defense, will be manned by either of two sophomores, Andy Solonoskior George Smith. Hilka heads the list of three lettermen line-backers, with Steve Diacont and Pete Bailey battling for theother starting position. Jerry Loftin is a promising sophomorelinebacker.

The secondary will remain unsettled until the openinggame, with Yount and Dick Idol the only lettermen amongthe available personnel. Yount, who is expected to do thepunting after a tremendous performance in the Liberty Bowl,is the secondary leader at safety. Paul Sharp, up from lastyear’s freshman team, has a lot of defensive savvy and haswon a starting spot at the other safety. 'Paul Reid, a quickbut non-lettered senior; sophomores Jack Whitley and Mar-cus Martin; and Idol are the cornerback candidates, withWhitley and Reid running on the first unit at the end ofspring practice.

Gerald Warren should be one of the bright spots for theWolfpack in 1968. The talented kicking specialist set a newnational collegiate record of 17 field goals last year whileleading the nation in scoring by kicking and the ACC inscoring with 70 points. Warren was named to two all-Americateams last year and his 56-yard field goal in the spring gameindicates another outstanding year for the slender specialistwhose kickoffs are consistently at the goal line.

EARLE WEDARDS

“It has been a number of years since we have been so shyof experienced players. It is a difficult task to replace 17senior starters, especially such a fine group as we had. Ourmajor problem will be how well we are able to find ade-quate line replacements. There aren’t any players better thanMark Capuano and Ron Carpenter at their positions. I hopewe can build around these men to form another solid de-fensive team. Based on spring practice, there are enoughyoung, eager and talented players who want to have a goodfootball team. This attitude will have to carry us a longway in 1968.”
