Festival Greetings

September 13, 2014 Dear Friends and Participants of the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival – Atlanta, Another year has passed and we now find ourselves enjoying our 19th Annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival. You continue to maintain a very impressive field of teams from around the entire Southeast United States. The fact that you get so many teams to come in from out of state speaks to the allure and spirit of our Festival. The growth and enthusiasm for this event is a true reflection of the spirit that pervades this Festival. It has long been known as a family oriented event that welcomes everyone. I still maintain that it is the “best hands-on, cultural diversity event” in the entire Atlanta area. I would also like to personally welcome our new Director of the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (NY), Mr. Steve Barclay. Without the support we have received from HKETO (NY) every year since the very beginning 19 years ago this Festival would not be possible. Welcome to Atlanta Steve Barclay and on behalf of everyone here thank you so much for your support! I wish you all the best today as paddlers and spectators for both the racing and our unique, outstanding Opening Ceremony with its celebration of Asian culture. Cheers Gene Eugene J. Hanratty, III Chairman & Festival Director Atlanta Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival

No one knows exactly when dragon boat racing started. The most popular saga of its origins dates back to a great Chinese patriot-poet named Qu Yuan who lived from 340-278 B.C.

Qu Yuan was a minister who advocated peace and social reforms in his home state of Chu. The King refused to listen to Qu Yuan’s advice and instead banished him from the state. In exile, Qu Yuan wrote poetry, expressing his concern for his country and people. In 278 B.C., when Qu Yuan heard that his home had been invaded, he drowned himself in the Mi-Lo River. The people of Chu rushed to the river to rescue him. Too late to save Qu Yuan, they splashed furiously and threw zung-ze – steamed rice wrapped in reed leaf – into the river as a sacrifice to his spirit and to keep the fish from Qu Yuan’s body.

Dragon boat racing began as a tradition to commemorate Qu Yuan’s death. In China, the races are held on the fifth day of the fifth moon on the lunar calendar. In other countries, they are held on that day or other times – spring, summer, fall or winter - pending favorable weather.
