MDB thanks these outstanding partners

t took many people across our region to organize the inaugural Montgomery

Dragon Boat Race and Festival. Enjoy the day, whether you are a crew member or spectator!

Without the generous support of companies and organizations you see on this page, this event would never had happened. Please take a moment to see who is listed here, and provide them with your patronage and support!

From an idea to raise funds for two important local non-profits, Bridge Builders Alabama and Rebuilding Together Central Alabama, this event has grown in size and scope as more and more of our community became involved. Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen.

We look forward to future years of this exciting event.

The Legend of Qu Yuan

The origins of dragon boats can be traced to the fate of Qu Yuan, a renowned 4th c. BCE Chinese poet, statesman, & royal advisor. Qu Yuan was banished from his beloved homeland because his advice to the king was misinterpreted. Overcome by sorrow, Qu Yuan threw himself into the torrents of the Milou River. Local fisherman raced to their boats to save Qu Yuan. In an attempt to keep

water dragons & fish from eating his body, they wildly beat their drums, tossed in rice dumplings and splashed the river with their paddles. Modern dragon boat racing grew from an annual reenactment of this dramatic tale.

Today, dragon boat racing is one of the fastest growing water sports around the world. It is visually spectacular, tremendously fun and is widely accessible to nearly any age or ability.

Neighbors helping neighbors stay safe, warm and dry since 1993.

ABOUT THEFESTIVALWorking in partnership, Rebuilding Together® Central Alabama and Bridge Builders® Alabama are pleased to host the state’s first dragon boat festival.

We have organized this event to increase public awareness about our charities and raise financial support for our programs.

We intend to grow the

race and festival over three years into one of the most successful dragon boat festivals in the southeast.

Montgomery’s outstanding riverfront facilities, the size of the river, the quality of downtown’s amenities and above all the generosity and spirit of its people makes Montgomery an ideal place to develop a robust culture of dragon boating.

Our purpose

Dragon boat history

TEAMSSmoke on the WaterThis team is an amalgam of the powerful forces from Air Command and Staff College, Grace Episcopal Church, Greater Montgomery Area Homebuilders Associations, and Caddell Construction. We pound nails and paddle oars and we won’t stop until the race is over and our community’s most vulnerable homeowners are WARM, SAFE and DRY! Support us at www.feedthedragon.org!

Liquid AssetsRecently relocated in historic downtown Montgomery, Welch Hornsby & Welch has served as a fee-only investment advisor to clients in multiple states and advised to more than $2.6 billion in assets since 1988. “Liquid Assets” is a team of dedicated employees and family members hoping to demonstrate the abilities to reach ONE common goal. PADDLE STRAIGHT!!! Although none of us have ever participated in a dragon boat race, we are a professionally trained group of highly synchronized paddlers led by Captain Edward V. Welch, Jr…. since Wednesday. We are competing in this event in hopes of building goodwill and lasting friendships within our community. We believe in what Vince Lombardi once said, “Individual commitment to a group effort, that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” PADDLES UP!!!

EpiscoPADDLERSSt. John’s EpiscoPADDLERS are composed of members and friends from the historic St. John’s Episcopal Church located in downtown Montgomery. Founded in 1834, St. John’s is the oldest Episcopal parish in Montgomery and we are proud to support Rebuilding Together and Bridge Builders. We really appreciate all our generous

sponsors, families and friends in this effort and, though we have our eyes on heaven, we will paddle like hell!

Savor the ExperienceThe Bridge Builders class of 2011 and class of 2012 are pleased to be rowing with Royal Cup Coffee. In this boat is a delicious “co-mingling of comfort and exoticism” making it easy for both Bridge Builders Alabama and Royal Cup Coffee to SAVOR THE EXPERIENCE!

Blazing PaddlesFriends of Ann and Griff Sikes and Marion and Craig Baab always up for a good time and the opportunity to prove we really are still 30! Most importantly, we support Rebuilding Together and Bridge Builders.

Chics Ahoy!TEAM Profile: The Chics Ahoy are the competition’s only all female crew… Some old friends and some new! This fun group of chics are all in pink and all in sync! They may not be the fastest, but we all know they are the cutest!

Old SchoolersThis team of old schoolers is from the Alabama Education Association. We are ready to teach the other teams what pulling together means. We should know, the 105,000 members of AEA all pull together for better Alabama schools! As our shirts say: Alabama educators know how to paddle!

Tai Chi Dragon TailsThe Alabama Branch of the Taoist Tai Chi (pronounced “Dowist Tie Chee”) Society of the USA proudly presents its Dragon Boat team – the Tai Chi Dragon Tails. We do tai chi for fun, health and relaxation. It’s a moving meditation done slowly and together with our feet planted firmly on the ground. Racing across the water will be a challenge, and by the end of the day we may be draggin’ tails, but you can bet we’ll still be relaxed, well fed and smiling all the way to the finish line.

Some crew profiles for today’s races

Rowing ThunderStudents and faculty from the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base. Air War College prepares senior officers for strategic level leadership of complex military operations and to advance innovative thought on National Security and Air Forces issues. The class of 2011 comprises 242 officers from 44 nations and includes officers in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, as well as other federal agencies.

The BravestMontgomery Fire/Rescue team, Lead by boat Captain Woody Bozeman. The Montgomery Fire/Rescue provides rapid and efficient response to emergency incidents in order to protect and safeguard the life and property of the citizens and visitors to the city.

Rowing Tigers, Paddling DragonsThe Montgomery Rowing Club, soon providing year-round Dragon Boat access to members, along with Fitness Solutions, Montgomery’s one-of-a-kind personal training gym, have teamed up to paddle the Rowing Tigers Paddling Dragons boat. As a joint force, they have recruited some of the fiercest competitors in the River Region. Watch out for their crew . . . because with a motto like EAT DRINK ROW PADDLE, you never know who’s doing what when!

The River MAARnstersWe are comprised of members and friends of the Montgomery Area Association of Realtors (get it? M-A-A-Rnsters???) and Davis & Copeland Realtors. Team members are Realtors from 10 different firms as well as affiliates from moving companies, law firms, home inspection, cleaning service and publishing. Though we come from many different backgrounds, we are all looking forward to “Pulling Together” to MOVE Montgomery forward and making a BIG MAARnster splash!

Team C.A.R.E. Team C.A.R.E, (Caring About Results Everyday), is representing Information Transport Solutions, Inc. (ITS). ITS is a privately owned company in Wetumpka, AL that is focused on providing full service technology and educational solutions that integrate voice, video and data to the southeast. Also known as the two ton boat of fun, Team C.A.R.E. cares about results in the classroom and

on the water! Our boat may be a bit heavy but it’s the weight of discipline, determination, and integrity.

Blue Dragon WarriorsWe are a team comprised of peacekeepers of the city. Our fundamental duty is to serve mankind and to paddle the fastest of all vessels on the Alabama River. From the bow to the stern, starboard to port, we recognize our paddles as a symbol of the Dragon Boat faith and accept it as a trust to be held as long as we are in the Dragon Boat mindset.

The Accountants of the CarribeanRepresent the employees and family from Wilson Price CPAs. We are going to row our Dragon Boat to victory and let the competition eat our wake!

R Regions River RowersThe Regions bankers went up the river, with a paddle. They knew that had to come prepared to battle whatever circumstances came their way. They had plotted a course to victory and worked the plan to ensure their success. They had every line of business represented to make sure to keep all of their clients afloat in these tough economic times. When other banks chose not to test the waters for themselves, it helped the Regions team sail past all of the others.

The Carmen Mirandas Have you ever paddled in a Montgomery River? With that hazy lazy like kind of crazy. Like South Alabama way? Ai, ai, ai, ai. Have you ever drummed in the sunlight? In the grand and glorious notorious South Alabama way? Give me a hat and a banana. Hoochie Coochie Shimmy. We can dragon boat with the best. A tutti fruiti hat. A wiggling midriff, Bongos banging the Renaissance Carmen boat will wiggle, Ai, ai, ai, ai. Down South Alabama Way, that’s all they’ve got to say.

The Sacred SavagesRepresent Baptist Health, recently named one of the Thomson Reuters top 50 health systems in the country. Comprised of Baptist South, Baptist East, Prattville Baptist, Montgomery Surgical Center and many ancillary services, Baptist Health is central Alabama’s healthcare leader.

Stroke of Genius (LWT)The interactive and marketing firm that’s always there for the community.

Jackson 25On the Jackson 25 boat we have a group of staff that are dedicated to making Jackson Hospital the best. On the Jackson 25 team we have staff from all areas, including nursing, physical therapy, nutrition and security working together to tow the line. It’s always a team effort at Jackson!

Baptist Health Sacred SavagesThe Sacred Savages represent Baptist Health, recently named one of the Thomson Reuters top 50 health systems in the country. Comprised of Baptist South, Baptist East, Prattville Baptist, Montgomery Surgical Center and many ancillary services, Baptist Health is central Alabama’s healthcare leader.

40 Hands of Chaos, HospiScript Services: is the Montgomery-based Prescription Benefits Manager focusing exclusively on the needs of the hospice industry.

The Either/Oars A ragtag team made up of folks from various walks of life who have one thing in common - a unique thirst for a life well lived. Unstoppable in their respective goals, they are a collective force to be reckoned with. The competition should be prepared to EITHER fight OR flee!

Aronov Riverfront RacersThroughout its history, ARONOV and its employees have generously contributed to the community through various charities and organizations. Most recently, ARONOV donated funds and resources to build Montgomery’s only Extreme Makeover House. Today, the ARONOV team members are proud to support Rebuilding Together & Bridge Builders.

Holy RowersWe really have a method of paddling that is divine, with almost no practice it must be a miracle! We are the First United Methodist Church of Montgomery, and we welcome your prayers as we try and survive the race.
