THE BOOK OF THE ROFFENYes, there is a book! 80 pages of Roffen Club history with hundreds of photos, lots of history, pictures of the staff and members. It hasbeen written with our many staff in mind, but members may like it as well as a reminder of The Roffen. It looks at all the rooms over theyears and the changing decor, the staff days out, the birthdays and lots of the faces from all those years. It is being printed to coincidewith the ‘Staff Party’ on Sunday 4th March where we expect to welcome back over a 100 of the great people who worked here over the

years and they will be the first to seethe new book. However, it will be available at the costprice of £10 from Monday 5th Marchonwards. You can see the book in thebar and buy your copy there. The twopages shown here are just an example. The book is A4 portrait and is glossy‘coffee table’ style.Hopefully it captures the essence ofhow a place like The Roffen only worksif you have a great group of people onthe staff doing all the hard graft!

ARTISTS IMPRESSIONSThe pain&ng on the le, by the famous Medway ar&stMichael Blaker, was commissioned by Brian along with severalothers by local ar&st back in 1986.

This watercolour shows the club as it was back then with thecurved blinds over the main doors and long before the ivytook hold, although you can see the new planters that hadbeen built to take those &ny ivy cu(ngs.

The example lower le is by another famous local ar&st whomust have spent days drawing in every single brick by hand.Goodness knows what it cost to commission all those worksof art, but they make a lovely record of the building.

The pen and ink drawing below by the equally infamous localpiss ar&st Brian Henslow shows the building from anotherangle, with the ar&st’s self portrait looking pensively out ofthe lounge window ‐ poser.

THE ROFFEN AS IT IS NOW IN 2018With all the improvements carried out by Sara Henslow in 2017. The new railings at the frontgiving a more open and welcoming appearance. The new oak signs with stainless steel le!ers. Thelighter colour paintwork. These changes all combined to give the building a lighter and warmerfeel. The ivy has survived some 32 years and s ll look good (when it has had its twice yearly trimit does). The Roffen flag flies proudly above the building showing that all is well and that Nigel is inresidence.

FLIPPING SWIMMING POOL PUMP!!The circulation pump to the pool choose the start of thesnow to break down. Unsurprisingly we have been unableto get the replacement or the fitter due to ‘The Beast fromThe East’. The pool is now COLD. Please do blame us or ourstaff. We are doing everything we can to get a new pumpfitted ASAP but the pool will still be COLD for 5 days afterwe fit it. Apologies, but that weather has caused chaos.SOUVENIRSSome members have asked what will be happening to thecontents of the club? All the contents are going to the newowners so sadly no souvenirs!!! THE BOOK OF THE CLUBIf you would like a reminder of the club then please pur-chase a copy of the club book which will be available fromthe bar for £10 from the 5th March. If the original run issold out then don’t worry we will reprint to fill any demand. Now that is a good souvenir and totally legal.SORRY - NO FREE DRINKSPlease, under no circumstances ask our club staff to give youfree drinks or food at any time. Everything has to be paidfor. Pressurising the staff for a free drink only puts their jobsat risk and upsets them. Please pay for everything you orderright up until the drink on the last day. A MASSIVE THANK YOU TO DELDel DeLorme has been our quizmaster for goodness knowshow many years and has done an amazing job. Don’t missthe final, final BIG QUIZ on Tuesday 22 March. Thanks Del!

THE 100 MEMBERS AT THE 10-37 YEAR DINNERAn amazing turnout at the dinner held to say ‘thank you’ to all of our members who have been withthe club for more than ten years. Among the attendees were members who have been with the club

since the mid 70’s, and quite a few who have been with The Roffen since 1981.Thank you to all of these loyal members and also to all our more recent members as well.
