/// WEEKLY MEAC TELECONFERENCE ///

ABOUT THE MEAC: The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) begins its 49th year of intercollegiate competition with the 2019-20 academic school year. Located in Norfolk, Va., the MEAC is made up of 11 outstanding historically black institutions across the Atlantic coastline: Bethune-Cookman University, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Florida A&M University, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University and South Carolina State University. The MEAC sponsors 15 Division I (FCS) sports with automatic qualifying bids for NCAA postseason competition in baseball, bowling, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track & field, softball, volleyball and men’s golf. The MEAC’s football champion is pitted against the champion of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in the Celebration Bowl, which debuted in December 2015. MEAC student-athletes excel on and off the field, and several have been recognized on ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and All-Dis-trict teams. The conference sponsors All-Academic teams in each of its sports and awards two post-graduate scholarships of $5,000 each annually to one male and one female student-athlete who have excelled academically and athletically and are in their final season of intercollegiate athletics eligibility and competition under MEAC and NCAA regulations.

HISTORY OF THE MID-EASTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE In 1969, a bold ad hoc group of innovators long associated with intercollegiate athletics met in Durham, N.C. to discuss the feasibility of organizing a new conference. From these discussions, they formed a steering and planning committee to fully investigate the idea, presented a detailed report with recommendations to interested collegiate institutions, and constructed a workshop to outline proposals. After selecting a proposal and adopting a program, seven institutions (Delaware State College, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University and South Carolina State College) agreed to become the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Their major objective was to establish, organize and supervise an intercollegiate athletic program among a compact group of education institutions of high academic standards with a sound philosophy of co-curricular activities. The conference agreed to seek Division I status for its sports. The conference was confirmed in 1970, kicking off its first season of competition in football in 1971. In 1978, the MEAC reached a milestone when it selected Kenneth A. Free to be its first full-time commissioner. Free served the conference for 18 years before stepping down in May 1996. In July 1996, Charles S. Harris was named commissioner, and he served in that capacity until April 2002. On Sept. 1, 2002, Dr. Dennis E. Thomas was named commissioner and has served in the position for 17 years. The conference’s first expansion occurred in October 1979, when Bethune-Cookman College and Florida A&M University were voted into the MEAC as new members. Original members Morgan State, North Carolina Central and Maryland Eastern Shore withdrew from the conference at the end of the 1979-80 fiscal year; Maryland Eastern Shore was readmitted in 1981 and Morgan State returned in 1984. Florida A&M opted to resign in 1984, but rejoined the conference in 1986. Coppin State College was granted admittance in 1985, becoming the ninth member institution. The MEAC expanded again in the 1990s with the inclusion of Hampton University (1995) and Norfolk State University (1997). The conference grew once again in 2007, adding Winston-Salem State University. Winston-Salem State, a MEAC provisional member, did not meet the qualifications for Division I and withdrew from the conference following the 2009-10 academic and athletic season. On July 1, 2010, the MEAC made its most recent expansion with the admittance of North Carolina Central and Savannah State University. On Sept. 10, 2014, the MEAC admitted Augusta University (formerly Georgia Regents University) as an associate member for men’s golf. In June 2018, the MEAC added Alabama Birmingham (UAB) and Monmouth as associate members for women’s bowling, effective for the 2018-19 academic year. As of July 1, 2018, Hampton was no longer a member of the MEAC. Savannah State followed suit one year later, opting to return to the Div. II ranks. On June 8, 1980, the MEAC was classified as a Division I conference by the NCAA; prior to that year, the conference had operated on the Division II level. The month after achieving Division I status, the MEAC received automatic qualification to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Currently, the conference has automatic qualifying bids for NCAA postseason play in baseball (since 1994), men’s basketball (since 1981), women’s basketball (since 1982), men’s golf (since 2014), softball (since 1995), men’s and women’s tennis (since 1998) and volleyball (since 1994). The MEAC declares champions in eight men’s sports – baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field and tennis – and eight women’s sports – basketball, bowling, cross country, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, softball, tennis and volleyball. The MEAC initiated cross country in 1980, and North Carolina A&T State earned the inaugural men’s crown. The first women’s cross country champi-onship took place a year later, with Howard winning the first of its seven titles. Indoor track & field was also added in 1981, with South Carolina State winning the men’s title and Howard taking the women’s crown. Tennis and golf returned as MEAC-sponsored sports in 1981 after a five-year hiatus. South Carolina State won all seven of the conference’s golf championships from 1972-83 before the sport was discontinued following the 1983 championship. In wrestling, Morgan State won 13 of 24 conference championships before the sport was discontinued in 1995. Baseball, which began in 1972, was discontinued following the 1977 season. It was brought back as a MEAC-governed sport, along with women’s volleyball, in 1983. Women’s softball became a MEAC-sanctioned sport in 1992. Bowling was officially sanctioned as a MEAC sport in 1999. The MEAC was the first conference to secure NCAA sanctioning for women’s bowling by adopting the club sport prior to the 1996-97 school year. Men’s golf returned as a MEAC-sponsored sport in 2014, with six teams participating in the conference championship. Bethune-Cookman was crowned the 2014 champion; the Wildcats also won the 2014 PGA Minority Collegiate Championship. Associate member Augusta University earned its first MEAC golf title in 2015, the institution’s first year of conference competition, before repeating in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

/// HEAD COACH WILLIE SIMMONS ///

WILLIE SIMMONS is entering his second season as the head football coach at Florida A&M University.

In December 2017, Florida A&M University took bold action to restore the luster to its’ proud football program by luring local native Willie Simmons from Prairie View (Tex.) A&Mto be the 18th head coach in the school’s history.

The weeks and months that followed were nothing short of scintillating, not unlike a blockbuster Hollywood movie script, as Simmons stoked the fires of revival in the passion-ate Rattler Nation.

Simmons, with the help of FAMU President Larry Robinson, Athletic Director Dr. John Ea-son, a former Rattler gridiron great and veteran colleguiate coach and administrator, and Board of Trustees chair Kelvin Lawson, quickly assembled a top-flight coaching staff by January.

Then in February, Simmons unveiled his first recruiting class, an eye-catching group of talented youngsters who showed signs of being able to make an immediate impact on the Rattlers’ gridiron fortunes.

With Simmons’ advent, his charisma, his reputa-tion and the numerous contacts of both he and his seasoned coaching staff, have made FAMU a pro-gram of interest on a state, regional and national scale again.

No greater evidence of that fact was the July 28, 2018 campus visit made by the na-tion’s Number One overall high school pros-pect, California native Kayvon Thibodeaux, a strapping 6-foot-5, 225-pound defensive end, who purposely travelled to Talla-hassee to meet with Simmons and his staff, and tour the FAMU campus. The praise from Thibodeaux via his social media accounts before, during and after his visit, gave an even greater boost to the image of the Rattler Football program, especially with him encouraging po-tential studentathletes to seriously consider His-torically Black Colleges and University (HBCU) in their recruiting process.

Then the 2018 season opened with a blistering 41-7 romp over Fort Valley State in front of 20,262 fans in Bragg Stadium, helping spur the Rattlers to their first winning season (6-5, 5-2 MEAC) since 2011.

At one stretch, the Rattlers reeled off five straight wins, and battled into first place in the MEAC, remain-ing in contention for the league title until season’s end - the first time the program had title hopes late in the season since 2010.

Simmons, who was a phenomenal prep athlete at a nearby Quincy (Fla.) Shanks High School, before embarking on a stellar collegiate football playing ca-reer that featured stints at Clemson University and The Citadel (S.C.), comes to Florida A&M University from Prairie View A&M (Tex.) University of the South-western Athletic Conference (SWAC), where he spent the last three seasons (2015-2017) as head football coach.

During his tenure at Prairie View A&M, Simmons revived the flagging fortunes of the Panthers, ele-vating them to prime contender status in the rugged SWAC Western Division, which featured perennial Black College heavyweights, Grambling State and Southern University.

Simmons fashioned a 21-11 overall worksheet, and a 19-6 league record, highlighted by an 8-2 debut campaign in 2015, which included an 8-1 runner up finish in the divison to eventual division champion Grambing State, after dropping a sizzling 70-54 wild west shootout in the State Fair Classic in Dallas, Tex-as.

In 2015, the Panthers were the highests scoring Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) team in the nation in 2015, averaging 44.9 points per game. The Panthers scored at 38 points or more nine times, including three 40-point games, and four 50-point games.

PVAMU also led the SWAC total offense (487.5 ypg / 6th NCAA), passing offense (278.0 ypg / 15th NCAA), passing efficiency (152.0 / 10th NCAA), and ranked

second in rushing offense (26.5 ypg / 21st NCAA).

Considered one of the most creative and innova-tive offensive minds in the collegiate game, today Simmons took the Prairie View job in December of 2015, after a scintillating run as offensive coordina-tor at Alcorn (Miss.) State University.

Simmons worked three seasons at Alcorn State (2012-14)under Jay Hopson (now head coach at South-ern Miss), and immediately helped initiate a meteoric revival of a proud Braves gridiron program, which had won just (2) games the previous semester.

Starting a true freshman quarterback and without spring practice, the Braves finished with a 4-7 record, highlighted by wins over a previous Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion Grambling State and #1 ranked Alabama A&M.

The 2013 season saw the Braves and Simmons’ of-fense finish 9-3 overall (7-2 in the SWAC) and ranked #5 in the final SBN Black College Football Poll (its highest ranking since 1984).

Alcorn running back Arnold Walker had a career year in 2013, leading the conference in rushing (1,191 yards)and touchdowns (16), becoming the school’s all-time leading rusher, and earning SWAC Co-Offensve Player of the Year honors. Simmons’ offense finished 2013 ranked in the Top 25 nationally in Total Offense, Rushing Offense, and Scoring Offense.

The 2014 campaign was an even better year for Sim-mons and the Braves, as they won the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship over Southern Uni-versity, as well as being names Black College National Champions.

The Braves offense set many records that season, finishing second nationally in Scoring Offense , 8th in Total Offense, and 4th in Rushing Offense.

Quarterback John Gibbs, Jr., was selected as SWAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year and Black College Player of the Year, giving Simmons two consecutive Player of the Year selections.

Prior to his successful run at Alcorn, Simmons’ first full-time work as an assistant coach on the college level came at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro (2007-11), under head coach Rick Stick-still, who recruited Simmons to Clemson.

After three seasons as the running backs coach at MTSU, Simmons was promoted to Pass Game Coor-dinator. The following season, he was promoted to Offensive Coordinator. By the age of 30, he was one of the youngest coordinators at the FBS level.

During his time as the Offensive Coordinator (2011), the Blue Raiders were ranked 20th nationally in To-

tal Offense, while leading the Sun Belt Conference in Total Offense, Rushing Offense, and Third Down Con-version Percentage, in addition to ranking second in Passing Offense.

Simmons began his coaching career in 2005 at Lincoln High School in Tallahassee, FL where he coached the quarterbacks and was also the Passing Game Coor-dinator.

There he had the opportunity to coach former NFL and USF quarterback B.J. Daniels. After one season , he was brought back to his alma mater Clemson as a Graduate Assistant Coach working with the quater-backs in 2006.

Simmons had a highly distinguished prep career at Quincy’s James Shanks High School, earning All-American honors as a quarterback (ranked #10 quarterback nationally), after leading the Tigers to their first district championship in 22 years, and being names Big Bend Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for 2,505 yards and 32 touchdowns.

He received over 25 scholarship offers, signing with Clemson, where he lettered three years (2000-2002), participating in four bowl games (Peach, Gator, Hu-manitarian, and Tangerine.)

Simmons earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Services (Sports) Marketing form Clemson in the spring of 2002, just 3 years after he enrolled, which is the fastest any football player has ever graduated from the university.

He initially transferred to Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, FL for his senior season, but after being deemed ineligible to compete because FAMU was in provisional status as a Divison I-A (now FBS) program, he enrolled at The Citadel (S.C.), where he garnered All Southern Conferense First Team honors after lead-ing the Bulldogs to a 6-6 record (the first non-losing season in 10 years.)

Under Simmons’ leadership, The Citadel also accom-plished a feat that had only been done by Marshall University, which was defeat to Furman, Appalachian State, and Georgia Southern in the same season.

After Simmons’ college career, he played one sea-son of Arena Football in the United Indoor Football League for the Sioux City Bandits.

Willie Roman Simmons was born in Tallahassee on Oc-tober 12th, 1980 to Willie and Phyllis Simmons. He is the youngest of three children and the only son. Sim-mons is married to the former Shaia Rene Beckwith (also a Quincy native)., who is a two time graduate of Florida A&M University. They have four children, two daughters, Raven and Shailoh, and two sons, Louis III, and Wraylon.
