The practical success of an idea, irrespective of its inherent merit, is dependent on the attitude of the contemporaries. If timely, it is quickly adopted; if not, it is apt to fare like a sprout lured out of the ground by warm sunshine, only to be injured and retarded in its growth by the succeeding frost.

Another group of activities is related to the research of the sea and subsea and is performed in two directions: research of the physical characteristics of the sea and research of the subsea. The research of the physical characteristics of the sea includes field investigations related to the research of sea currents, waves and thermohaline properties as well as underwater acoustics. In our laboratory work we can research the sea wave spectrum pro-duced by the wave generator, implemented by our experts, from the stage of design and development to the completion of the final product. For the research of the subsea we use modern remotely operated vehicles that provide all advantages of modern tech-nologies avoiding risk factors of human dives.

Within other activities our occupational safety experts offer com-plete solutions in the field of maritime technologies applying oc-cupational safety measures onboard ships, in shipyards, and on offshore platforms.

If you cannot find the service you may need among the offered ones, please feel free to contact us.

SHIP HYDRODYNAMICS(TESTING OF SHIP MODELS IN LABORATORY CONDITIONS AND NUMERICAL MODELLING)

Testing of ships in laboratory conditions is a traditional area of activity of Ship Hydrodynamics. It includes model tests, development and optimisation of the hull

form and propulsors in the towing tanks and cavitation tunnels.

The activities of Ship Hydrodynamics represent the core of Brodarski Institute’s ac-tivities in maritime technologies, and are at the same time the first activities that were

started with the establishment of Brodarski Institute sixty years ago.

The expertise of our professionals includes designing of various types of vessels and pro-pulsors, hydrodynamic testing and offshore engineering. We are fitted with state-of-the-art

laboratories (four towing tanks, two cavitation tunnels and one special purpose cavitation tunnel), and propeller and ship model manufacturing shops.1

Until today, almost 1350 ship models and almost 1150 propeller models have been manufac-tured and tested. About 30 percent of the tested models were fast ships, naval ships and special

purpose ships designed for the needs of the police, coast guard and other authorities.

Our expert knowledge and experience have helped us in establishing a wide network of clients among shipyards, design offices and propeller manufacturers in Croatia and abroad.

Following the world trends, we have established numerical modelling activities where our experts using modern software tools for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are performing hydrodynamic analysis.

Numerical modelling has wide application in maritime technologies and other fields of Brodarski Institute’s activities.2 The use of CFD methods is becoming indispensable part of the design process in many bran-

ches of industry, since it accelerates design process, improves the quality (provides insight about particular flow features that cannot be obtained by experimental measurements) and reduces the costs accordingly.

Brodarski Institute together with the Faculty of Electrical En-gineer-ing and Computing offers services of underwater inspection (survey

and research) applying the state-of-the-art intelligent underwater sys-tems through the use of Remotely Operated Vehicles – ROVs.

We perform underwater exploration services using the ROVs that have a broad spectrum of applications and numerous advantages in accomplish-

ment of tasks in practical application compared to divers.

Remotely operated vehicles VideoRay Pro II are easily portable systems for under-water inspection. Their small dimensions enable inspection of very narrow spaces

such as wells, pipelines, caves, etc.

Flexible remotely operated vehicles Benthos Stingray MKII can be used for accomplish-ment of a wide range of tasks. Their greater mass ensures greater stability when moving

objects under water using manipulators.

So far the ROVs have been used for inspection of caves, dams, hydropower plants, and in search missions (search for a crashed plane).

NOISE MANAGEMENT SySTEMSNOISE mAPPINg AND ACTION PLANS

We have a long experience and numerous references in producing documents for environmental noise management, namely noise maps, conflict noise maps and ac-tion plans for environmental noise reduction. Computer calculation methods for mod-elling emission and an sound/noise propagation emitted by known noise sources in geographical areas of known characteristics, based on internationally recognised stan-dards, are used. The noise maps are produced for most common noise sources such as road, rail and air traffic, industries plants, entertainment and catering establishments.

The noise map is the fundamental document by which, in accordance with the Noise Protec-tion Law (20/03) and the EU Environmental Noise Directive 2002/49/EC, we are helping our customers to establish a system for environmental noise management, with the goal of reducing the harmful effect of high levels of environmental noise on people.

In order to achieve that goal, noise maps define total noise exposure of the population involved by means of number of people and dwellings affected by certain noise levels and total noise annoyance in certain area. On the basis of noise maps the action plans for prevention and reduction of excessive environmental noise levels are implemented. This information is given to the public and is also used as an expert basis for urban planning documentation in the local community.

LABORATORY TESTINGOF PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS

LABORATORy fOR TESTING OfVIBRATION, SHOCK AND STRENGTH

In our laboratory we offer mechanical resistance testing of devices and equipment to vibration, shock, bumps and hydrostatic pressure. We also measure deformation distribution and stress on a prototype structure in order to check its strength.

We use professional design CADICAE applications (CATIA, ANSYS) that enable us to solve a wide range of engineering problems such as resilient mounting calculations (2D and 3D methods), construc-tion optimisation on the basis of stress and deformation analysis and design solutions for force trans-ducers.

Together with the Calibration Laboratory for Acoustics and Vibration of Brodarski institute we perform secondary calibration of mechanical vibration sensors.

We also perform services related to law-regulated measurements of strength and vibration of rail vehicles, and we can design and deliver the complete sys-tem for carrying out these measurements by the client.

CALIBRATION LABORATORy fORACOuSTICS AND VIBRATION

We provide services of calibrating acoustic and vibration transducers and in-struments by means of reference standards traceable to primary (state) stan-dards and SI measurement units. We maintain primary standards for the sound pressure in the air (measuring microphones), water (hydrophones) and vibra-tion acceleration (accelometers).

LABORATORy fOR THERMAL ANALySISThe Laboratory for Thermal Analysis was established in 1996. So far, the work in the labo-ratory has been mostly based on the research of thermal properties of energetic materials. However, during the past several years, in accordance with the market requirements, the laboratory has been expanding its activities to testing of thermal properties of materials in general.

Within the research of the thermal properties of materials we perform thermomechanical char-acterization of materials, investigation of mechanisms and kinetics of thermal degradation re-actions of materials, investigation of the ageing process, and shelf life evaluation based on changes of the thermal properties. We provide evaluation of the critical self-ignition conditions of explosive materials by numerical modelling of combustion, detonation and thermal initiation of energetic materials.

The laboratory is equiped with a modern system for thermal analysis of materials, consisting of sev-eral measuring techniques for investigation of the mechanical and/or chemical properties as a func-tion of temperature and/or time (DSC, TGA+DTA+MS, DMA,TMA).

The laboratory’s mission is to be premium thermal analysis laboratory for material testing, fundamental and applied research and education in the field of the material thermal behaviour. With the aim to ac-complish this mission, in 2006 the laboratory successfully completed an accreditation process (HRN EN ISO/IEC 17025) for seven measurement methods at the National Accreditation Agency.
