EDITORIAL

When guests come to the publishing house or we hold

publisher evenings, at universities or at agencies, we’re often

asked how we get the ideas for our books. The answer can

be found in this line by Jimi Hendriks. Translated to us, it’s

“Books speak, but publishers listen.”

Whenever we’re able, we listen to creatives. We ask

what they’re concerned about. We try to understand agency

life, try to find out what shapes their everyday lives, under-

stand their desires, dreams and hopes.

This is the basis on which we assess manuscripts.

Does what’s lying before us as the embryo of a book have

what it takes to become something that makes the life

better, easier, more successful and perhaps even happier?

A creative life can only succeed in the long run when

art meets the art of living. So for several years now you’ve

not only discovered professional and creative inspiration in

the Schmidt programme, but also food for thought that goes

far beyond design as such. You could call this category of

books “Design your life,” and their message could be

summed up as: visual communication speaks and is appeal-

ing, inspiration comes from listening – also to yourself and

your needs!

We hope you enjoy what you’ll discover here and that

you find something in this directory that makes your heart

beat faster.

»Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens.« JIMI HENDRIX

Kerstin and Robert were leading ideal lives in the creative industries. They had everything people dream of; at least that’s what everyone thought. Then everything changed.

Now or never, they told each other – and set sail.It became a true adventure with plenty of highs and lows, with nightmarish scenes in the middle of the Atlantic and countless storms, also emotional ones. But it became so much more. In their experiences and in processing them, they discovered what’s really important – and that the secret of a happy life lies far less in external circumstances than within ourselves. They began to substantiate their personal insights with the current state of research and came closer to the secret of living a full life.

Five years later, Kerstin and Robert are back on the high seas. They’re starting out again, driven by changed values and equipped with the latest findings from Positive Psychology.

In this book, they share both: the adventure of their time-out and the findings they gained from a long journey, at the end of which there’s no destina-tion, but a beginning...

Ownership awareness through artistic presentation.

We accumulate possessions over the years in cup-boards, shelves, drawers and chests. There are those we enjoy almost every day and then there are those in the farthest corners that have long been forgotten. And everything in between. Decluttering and cleaning up is “in,” but that’s not Silke Wawro’s goal. Instead, she invites you to explore your own four walls with the goal of creating ownership awareness. To see the things of everyday life anew through creative presen-tation, artistic installations and repurposing. Perceive things differently, resist the daily forgetting and stowing away.

Is it the things that change? Or does your gaze change? Does the presentation enhance the value of your belongings? Or will you throw away a few things when you’re done? It’s in interaction with things that you reflect their meaning. Turn your home into a studio. You’ll be surprised at what the things say about you. And you to the things.

For millennia, walking in the countryside was the most important form of locomotion; our bodies are made for it. Today we sit in front of screens and bring nature indoors on our Instagram feed.

This book will lure you outdoors. It will take you on the way to the closest source of inspiration: the landscape on your doorstep. Christian Sauer coaches creative people, he brings them closer to the move-ment of walking and paves the way to inspiration and refuelling in creative everyday life, to recreation and to a successful life. Walking outdoors is a long-tested, simple way of finding yourself, an effective anti-stress method, low-threshold and cost-effective. Maybe your life would be a lot better if you walked more? Walking saves the walker from himself.

Walking outdoors is the key to greater satisfaction and even success – especially for people whose ideas are their livelihood!

All rights available

Daily tear-off calendar with 368 printed sheets with additional perforation to separate the calendar and collect the apple pictures Size 11.4 x 15 cmPacked in a specially made plywood mini fruit crate

They’re the secret stars at weekly markets and in nurseries: old apple varieties. They’re often more aromatic, mostly healthier and less allergenic than the modern varieties, but most of all, they’re real characters!

Three times in a row, the quaint calendar in the cool plywood case was a sales hit. Three times it sold out well before Christmas. Last year, we thought we had lifted the final treasures from the international archives, had printed the final apple calendar. But giving up is not what Schmidt does.

Persevering searches in new archives bore fruit in the truest sense of the word. Again for 2020, you can get your daily ration of old apples. Again we perforated the sheets twice: tear off the day, but keep the apple as a notepad or on your fridge. This time the calendar is again bedded on wood shavings in a wooden box – making it a beautiful gift!

384 daily sheets in 12 different colours, printed on both sides Packaged in a sturdy collecting box Size 8.5 x 12 cm

It seems as if around the world borders are currently being closed off rather than opened up. Good thing that more and more font families are mediating between languages and cultures so you can use a font for multiple writing systems.

Typodarium 2020 therefore features a bi-scrip-tual font family every Sunday in addition to the most recent achievements from the vibrant type community.

There are differences between Arabic and He- brew, Japanese and Latin scripts, but visually there are also many similarities. Communication overcomes boundaries. Communication needs fonts. Font design-ers respond to their clients wishes and they think more globally and further than the headlines might suggest. The Sundays of Typodarium 2020 define the silver lining on the time horizon: We are one world!

Type design is more than type design; it reflects what moves the world.

The only thing that’s really complicated about this technique is the name!

Gouache is the all-rounder that makes your dreams of painting and drawing come true. Newly discovered and presented by Aljoscha Blau, one of the most renowned illustrators in German-speaking countries.

Diluted, working with gouache is almost like with watercolour. Used as a paste, the paint is applied in opaque layers with a matte surface reminiscent of pastels. Soluble in water, it forgives “mistakes” and allows for corrections and revisions. The fine grain of the pigments makes detailed drawings possible. Gouache dries quickly, is non-toxic and inexpensive.

Multiple international award winner Aljoscha Blau shares his many years of experience in this book, offers shopping and material recommendations, tips for swift success, suggestions on composition, tools and work steps. And he spices it all up with his own illustrations, which are both an incentive – and a feast for the eyes ...

An extension of open-type format makes it possible to design fonts with multi-colored letters. From colored multi-layered display fonts to rainbow-colored running text, color gives words new expressive possi-bilities.

For the design of his multi-colored, multi-layered fonts, Mark van Wageningen returned to printing with wooden type. Form and color studies followed, were ennobled with an Award for Typographic Excellence, went into the next rounds, and then were digitized to become type trendsetters and font sales chart climbers.

CREATIVE INSPIR ATION

For true creatives, a challenge is not a problem; it’s the solution.

Have stories of heroes fascinated you since childhood? Do creative ideas magically attract you? Do you wish you had such great ideas, too? Then you won’t want to put this book down. Fascinated by the idea of doing big things with little effort, Dominik Imseng dog-ears books on economic, advertising and world history, coaching and creative techniques.

He compiles stories for you that prove that there are no hopeless situations, but only unanswered ques-tions. Stories that make you want to think over habits, to recognize opportunities – and that also give you the tools to do so. From corkscrew thinking to creative leverage.

And since good stories stick in your memory and good ideas take on lives of their own, you may soon be telling stories in which you are the creative hero.

URBAN SKETCHING | ILLUSTR ATION

Drawing and Painting make Drainting!

When you were a kid, you used your paint box to fill in areas and grabbed a pencil to draw details or lines. It was intuitive and completely natural. Then you were taught the difference between “drawing” and “paint-ing” and that’s when things got difficult. Because if there are no outlines, you have to invent them abstractly. So you need to capture everything in your first strokes: proportion and perspective, contrast and texture, the big picture and the details. Since this rarely succeeds, frustration is inevitable.

Experienced teacher and top illustrator Felix Scheinberger counters this traditional differentiation with an approach that is as simple as it is convincing: Paint the areas, draw the lines – in that order – from the approximate to the more specific, from the overall impression to the details. Always using the technique that’s best suited.

Your pictures get better, your desire to create grows – the combination is inspiring ...

BR ANDING | USER E XPERIENCE

Brand-oriented design of interactive applications goes far beyond visual design.

Digital touchpoints are integral parts of contemporary brand communication. The number and types of these brand contact points is growing rapidly. Using them coherently in the spirit of the brand presents busines-ses and agencies with new challenges. Complex user experience designs are created only in a workflow that closely interlinks conception, design and technology and integrates consistent prototyping and testing.

Katja Wenger and Marco Spies accompany well-known companies on their way through their digital transformation. They know how to make brands a credible experience in the digital world and how to plan and design the user experience in the spirit of the brand. They pass on this knowledge. Profound and practical. Structured and understand-able. With checklists, tools and valuable, practical tips.

We planned a revised version for the follow-up to the international hit book. It turned into a brand new book!
