WELCOME TO OUR EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION

This weekend we welcome members of ACTIONN (Acting in Community Together in Organizing North-ern Nevada) who are here to help register anyone who is eligible to vote who has not yet registered. Voting is an important duty all citizens ought to take seriously and, especially as people of faith, we encourage eve-ryone to make their voice heard at the polls. ACTIONN is an inter-faith-based community organizer. I am a founding member of the board from many years ago, at the urging of Bishop Straling. I also have placed at the vestibules of the church some information about conscience and voting as well as our U.S. Bishops’ call to civility in dialogue on politics. Please take one home and consider its guidance.

It is fitting we focus on civil duty this weekend in light of two important commemorations this week. First, we celebrate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday on Monday. A day to lift up and give thanks for a man of great faith, moved by his belief in Jesus Christ and the call of the Gospel for all humanity. Dr. King spoke truth to the multitudes and raised up those with no voice. He was maligned, arrested, beaten and, ultimately, killed for his beliefs, crying out that civil rights belong to every man, woman and child, regardless of race or economic status. His sufferings imitate his Savior’s. Let us give thanks for his witness and pray for all whose rights are abused today and for those who fight for them.

Secondly, we mark the anniversary of the landmark decision granting the constitutional right to an abor-tion. In Roe v. Wade and its accompanying cases, the US Supreme Court placed the rights of a mother above the child in her womb, pitting one against the other in the courtrooms of the United States. Not only have the courts placed the right to a mother’s life above the life of her child, but they have placed the right of the child in the womb below any other right of the mother, no matter how small. The US Bishops have de-clared January 22 to be a day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children, a day also of mourning and reparation. If we stand for the civil rights of all people, we must also stand for the right of the child in the womb to be born and to be given every opportunity to become all God intended that child to be.

Both of these days highlight the importance of our participation in the life of our country and its policies. Jesus walked among us to teach us the value and dignity of each human person. As his disciples, and pre-cious children of God, may we strive that all may be lifted up, honored and respected.

The Priests Study Days & meetings went well last week. One of the things that I shared with my brother priests is that the Cathedral will be marking a prayer weekend for each parish and mission of the diocese, as well as for Bishop Manogue Catholic High School. The Cathedral holds a unique place in the diocese as the seat of the bishop and the Mother Church. Each weekend, in the bulletin, we will highlight and remember in prayer each Catholic entity in our diocese, thereby connecting them to the Cathedral and us to them. The first one will be remembered next weekend, very near the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, our patron saint as well as St. Thomas Aquinas Mission in Wells, Nevada.

I will be missing our parish feast day this year, January 28, but will be in Rome and will celebrate Mass that day, along with Bishop Calvo and the bishops of our region, at the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the Ca-thedral for the Diocese of Rome. I will do my best to send greetings from Rome to be included in the bulletin for that weekend – amazing how the internet and “electronic mail” can remove the barriers of distance and time! Thank you for your good wishes and prayers as I travel.

Blessings to you all this Second week in Ordinary Time!

FROM FATHER CHUCK’S DESK

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Recently a member of the Serra Club of Reno expressed the desire to establish a challenge match up to $75,000 for the benefit of seminarian education. This anonymous donor offered to match donations made by January 31, 2020, up to a total of $75,000. All funds will be held in the Thomas S. Dolan Endowment for Seminarians, which is restricted in use for the educational needs of the Diocese of Reno Seminarians.

I’m gratified to witness the men and women of the SERRA Club of Reno supporting the religious of our diocese through prayer, community gatherings and financial contributions. I am especially grateful for this matching gift that enables us to raise funds for seminarian education and to continue to grow the Thomas S. Dolan Endowment for Seminarians.

Educating one seminarian takes six to eight years and costs approximately $50,000 per seminarian each year. In the past three years, we have ordained five men as priests for this diocese, and they are now working alongside their brother priests ministering to Catholics throughout northern Nevada. Currently, 3 young men are studying to become priests for the diocese.

I invite you to consider prayerfully whether you might be able to help us maximize this challenge by making a donation toward the match by January 31, 2020. If you are able to make a contribution, please make your check payable to the Diocese of Reno with a memo note: SERRA Fund Match. Mail donation to: Diocese of Reno, 290 S. Arlington Ave., Reno NV 89501 or drop an envelope addressed to the Diocese into your parish collection basket.

I thank you, as always, for your generosity and encourage you to consider becoming a member of the SERRA Club of Reno. The women and men religious in our diocese feel the prayerful support of our SERRA club members on a daily basis. For information on membership, contact Ross Barker at [email protected].

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo, Bishop of Reno

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This weekends second collection will benefit the Church in Latin America. This is an important opportunity for U.S. Catholics to express their solidarity with Catholics in Latin America where the Church has diverse needs. Some grants to evangelization in remote areas, while others strengthen programs that are already flourishing so that they can continue their good work. Many family and catechetical ministry projects funded by this collection offer families and communities a way to strengthen, affirm and celebrate their life together in faith, offering a different and hopeful vision of relationships with one another and with God. Please be generous in this collection and take this opportunity to share your faith with our brothers and sisters in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support will truly make a difference. Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo, Bishop of Reno

DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE LEGAL PROTECTION OF UNBORN CHILDREN The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade & Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in God’s providence. We’re reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard.

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373, designates January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion.” As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms.

“A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. Through special initiatives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Christian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer.” Pope Saint John Paul II, Evangelium vitae, 100
