Dear Parents and Students Today I call for your con nued prayers for Megan Rejfek, Class of 2011. Last Friday, Megan suffered a sudden and serious brain aneurism. Of course, this has been an enormous shock for all of us. We pray for Megan, her parents Anne‐Maree and John, her family and her many friends. We pray too for her surgeons, her doctors and the medical team in Intensive Care who are working to support Megan. May the Holy Spirit be with us in our prayers as we hope and pray together for courage, strength and healing. Amen. WELCOME This week we welcome to Brisbane our new Church leader, His Grace, Archbishop Mark Coleridge. We look forward to his stewardship and guidance and pray that his me in office may be graced with wisdom, love and hope. Yesterday, I was fortunate to be present (with our student leaders) at a gathering of student leaders from the Brisbane Diocese Catholic Secondary Schools, when His Grace addressed the students. He spoke passionately to them about their role as leaders of the Church today (not future leaders of the Church but today’s leaders). He urged them to be “light for the world”: to use and harness their own light; to be young people reaching out and serving others. His prayer for them was powerful and mo va ng. MISSION DAY I offer congratula ons and thanks to the whole community for their marvellous Mission Day efforts. The student leaders, in par cular, deserve praise for their crea vity, leadership, organisa on and passion. Both the Choirs and the Jazz dances were fabulous. In addi on to raising awareness amongst the students of the plight of the world's poorest peoples, the students also raised over $8000 to be distributed between Mary Ward Interna onal, Caritas and St Vincent De Paul. I thank the staff too for their keen par cipa on and involvement, with a special men on going to the awesome "No Direc on" boy band and their devoted "screaming groupies".

`âá|v axãá Loreto Music Festival
Heats for the Music Festival are well under way, please check the daily notices and Music Noticeboard for your heat times.
Aurora Guitar Ensemble
Paul Svoboda's flagship guitar group, the Aurora Guitar Ensemble will perform at Customs House this Sunday, May 20 from 11:30-12:30, as part of UQ School of Music's Sundays at Customs House concert series. Admission is FREE. All guitarists and enthusiasts are encouraged to attend, so have a morning in the CBD and top it off with a terrific concert from one of Australia's best guitar ensembles. Aurora will be performing several pieces from their debut CD, Every Second Tuesday.
Jazz & Vocal Workshops
Last Wednesday the Jazz Ensemble and Chorale participated in workshops with world class jazz musicians John Morrison and Jacki Cooper. Jacki first put our Jazz Ensemble, Music Extension and Contemporary singers through their paces, before working with Chorale on scat singing, diction and style using both their own repertoire and music that they learnt on the day. At the same time, John introduced the Jazz Ensemble to improvisation, practice techniques and rhythmic concepts in his own humorous and inspirational way. Both clinicians were very impressed with the standard of musicianship that our students exhibited – a great compliment from professionals such as these. I hope the girls all enjoyed the workshops and feel inspired to continue working hard and enjoying their music!
Music Extension As part of the Music Extension course, and to assist students with their Investigation Task preparation, we normally take the class to the State Library for a research trip. Unfortunately, the guided visits have not been running since last year’s floods and this excursion has been difficult to organise. However, we have now been able to confirm a date with the State Library for next Tuesday morning 22 May. We will leave Period 1 slightly early and catch taxi’s into the Library by the time it opens at 10.00am, spend two hours being shown around and locating useful resources, then depart from the Library in time to return to school for lunch. To make the best use of this trip, it is important that all Music Extension students organise for themselves an SLQ E-Services card by filling out the online application at http://srlopac.slq.qld.gov.au/webvoyage/servlet/PatronRegistrationForm. As this excursion is occurring several weeks later than we prefer, we have organised an extension for the Investigation Task final due date, which will now be Tuesday 5 June. Ben Langford - Director of Music c 9 Y axãá Denim and Lace Don't forget to buy your tickets this week to be in the draw for the $500 travel voucher! 18 May is the cut off for early bird tickets. fv|xÇvx WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá A small group of Year 11 physics students and I attended the Australian Institute of Physics Lectures held at Churchie last week. The evening proved to be a most enjoyable and informative occasion as we were treated to presentations from some of the leading physicists in the Nation. The keynote speaker, Associate Professor Matthew Davis from UQ gave us a fantastic insight into the coldest parts of the universe and the strange behaviour of atoms at very low temperatures. He also described how lasers can be used to cool things down in the lab to near absolute zero temperatures and how the laws of quantum physics can be harnessed to construct supercomputers that will be millions of times more powerful than the best processors we have available today.
Year 11 Biology Excursion to North Stradbroke Island On Monday 21st May all Year 11 biology students will be going to North Stradbroke Island for a field trip which forms an important part of their course and data collected contributes to a summative assessment item. The students will be studying sand dune ecosystems, the biology of Brown Lake as well as the mangroves at Myora Springs. To maximise the time spent on the island we need to have an earlier than normal start and later finish to the day. Students need to be at school at 7.00am as we will be leaving at 7.10am sharp to catch the 8am barge. The anticipated return time to Loreto is 4.30pm. All of the details of the field trip are explained in a letter that all biology students have received. If you have any queries regarding the excursion, please feel free to contact me at the College.
