GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Before use: - Read and familiarise yourself with this manual. - Inspect the work area for obstructions which may constitute a hazard. - Ensure all guards and covers are fitted. - If working on the ROTASLASHER whilst it is held on the tractor three-point linkage ensure that it is properly supported by blocks or stand under the body.

During use: - Ensure that the ROTASLASHER is correctly hitched to the tractor. - Be alert to obstructions e.g. tree roots, cables and pipes, boulders and rocks etc. Should any obstruction be

encountered stop immediately and investigate. - Observe safe driving procedures, such as reducing speed on steep slopes and sharp turns. - Ensure that by-sanders’ keep well clear of the machine. Flying debris could cause fatal injuries. - Avoid working on ground where there is the risk of the tractor overturning. - Never touch the blades or blade beam with the tractor engine running, switch off first. - Do not raise the Rotaslasher too high on the tractor hydraulic when turning at headlands, as the PTO cross shafts could “knuckle”, causing vibration and premature failure to the PTO shaft and components. - Do not allow passengers on the tractor or ROTASLASHER when working or transporting the ROTASLASHER and disengage the PTO when transporting. - Take all possible precautions when leaving the tractor, i.e. Disengage the PTO, lower the ROTASLASHER to the ground, set the tractor parking brake, stop the tractor engine and remove the key.

After use: - Inspect the ROTASLASHER for damage. - Check that all nuts, bolts and fasteners are tight. - Carry out lubrication and maintenance as detailed in this manual. - If disconnecting the ROTASLASHER ensure that it is adequately supported.

Always: - Wear substantial or safety footwear. - Ensure that the ROTASLASHER is not operated by children or untrained persons. Use the ROTASLASHER only for the purpose for which it was designed, tested and in accordance with the instructions laid out in this manual.

Never:

- Carry out repairs or adjustments to the ROTASLASHER unless the tractor is stopped and the ROTASLASHER is firmly supported or lowered to the ground. - Leave the tractor seat unless the ROTASLASHER is lowered, the tractor gearshift in neutral, the brake applied, the engine stopped and the ignition key removed. - Allow any person to ride on the ROTASLASHER during operation or transport, and particularly ensure that children are kept well away from the ROTASLASHER at all times.

PRINCIPAL SAFETY ISSUES

Due to their potential high frequency of occurrence and capability to cause serious injury or death,

these issues must be addressed.

HIGH SPEED EJECTED OBJECTS

Be aware that equipment such as slashers and mowers are capable of ejecting debris at

over 300km/h (flails at over 150km/h) and such debris is capable of severe injury or death.

Debris can readily travel up to 200m if guarding is insufficient for the application or has

been removed.

The requirements for guarding against debris being ejected from slashers, mowers or flails

must be appropriate for the situation in which the unit is used. For example, operating the

unit on a roadside in an residential areas require extensive guarding, whereas scrub

clearing well away from other personnel will require minimal guarding.

When operating a slasher on an incline (for example on a roadside) be aware that the

trajectory of any ejected debris may come well up off the ground, closer to bystanders’

heads and eyes (which can more easily cause serious injuries) while also increasing the

possible distance the object can travel.

Do not allow people to stand directly behind slashers, mowers or flails. Do not direct the

discharge of the aforementioned toward persons, animals, buildings or vehicles.

Check the area for debris that may be picked and thrown by the implement, causing injury

or damage. Be alert for hidden obstructions.

ENTANGLEMENT IN TRANSMISSION COMPONENTS

Contact with rotating transmission equipment can result in severe injury or death.

Ensure that all shielding is in place before operation. If transmission guards are removed

for maintenance work it must be ensured that they are replaced correctly upon completion.

Repair or replace any damaged guards.

Warning or instruction decals must be kept in a readable condition. Replace unreadable

decals immediately.

6

Contact with working cutting elements can result is severe injury or death.

Do not allow anybody (operators, maintenance personnel or bystanders) anywhere near

the cutting elements whilst the implement is operation.

Be aware that some cutting elements such as rotary hoe blades will not only cut but drag

limbs est. into further danger.

Ensure that all shielding is in place before operation. If transmission guards are removed

for maintenance work it must be ensures that they are replaced correctly upon completion.

Repair or replace any damaged guards.

Warning or instruction decals must be kept in a readable condition, replace unreadable

decals immediately.

NEVER place hands or feet under slashers, mowers, flails, hoes or power harrows, nor

endeavour to make any repairs or adjustments while the blades are rotating, they are

capable of inflicting serious injury.

Never touch the blades or attempt to free any jammed obstacles while the tractor engine is

running. The clutch may be slipping and removal of any obstruction may allow the blades

to suddenly begin rotating with serious injuries being a very real possibility.

TRANSPORT SAFETY

When transporting the implement on a tractor on public roads ensure that you comply with

the relevant regulations. Note that if the tractor and equipment combine are wider than

2.4m (8’) all or some of the following may be applicable or required:

o Class of roads permitted for travel on may be required.

o Transport restricted to daylight or off peak traffic hours.

o Sign indicating whole vehicle width.

o Lights indicating vehicle width if transported within hour of

darkness.

If in doubt contact your government department responsible for road

transport.

Disengage the PTO when transporting the implement or when not in

use.

Do not allow anyone to ride on the implement at all times.

Do not allow passages on the tractor unless a specific seat is provided

Ensure all hitch pins are correctly fitted with retaining pins.

Mechanically secure hydraulic cylinders to prevent cylinders creeping.

8

MOUNTING TO TRACTOR

Before mounting the slasher to the tractor ensure the stabiliser bars or chains and adjustable top link are fitted to the tractor. It is essential that the ROTASLASHER should be able to easily ride over obstacles. Set the lower tractor lift links to the float position on the tractor lift arms or set the hydraulic lift lever in the float position on the hydraulic quadrant. Mounting must take place with the tractor and ROTASLASHER on level ground. All directions are given from the rear view of the tractor or ROTASLASHER. Firstly, slacken off the tractor stabiliser chains and reverse the tractor up to the ROTASLASHER. Hitch the tractor to the ROTASLASHER hitch points. It is usually best to hitch up in the following order - left bottom link, followed by the top link and lastly the right bottom link. Firmly secure the implement to the tractor using the correct hitch pins and lynch pins. It is very important that the correct size and hardness hitch and lynch pins are used at all times. Incorrect hitch and lynch pins can cause damage to the ROTASLASHER and in extreme cases the implement may become unhitched during transport or operation. Secondly; connect the universal drive shaft to the tractor PTO ensuring the locking pins are located in the groove on the tractor PTO drive shaft, and the safety cover does not foul the tractor PTO guard. Raise and lower the ROTASLASHER to ensure the drive shaft does not jam or become disengaged. Set the tractor hydraulic quadrant stop at the correct lift height. Lastly: level the ROTASLASHER by adjusting the right hand tractor lift arm so that the blade beam clearance from the ground is equal across the width of the ROTASLASHER when the weight of the implement is supported on the three point linkage. Lower the ROTASLASHER onto the ground and adjust the tractor top link till the front edge of the skids is 50mm clear of the ground.

OPERATING PRECAUTIONS

Warning: Do not get off the tractor with the engine running or the PTO engaged. Ensure the tractor is switched off before making any adjustments to the ROTASLASHER or tractor. Be aware of, and avoid or remove any obstructions.

Caution: If operating besides public highways, or in parks and gardens, inspect the surface and remove any stones,

bottles, tins etc. to maximum protection of property and persons. Never carry passengers or goods on the ROTASLASHER. Discourage spectators when operating in public areas.

Commencing operation: Lower the slasher to the ground and engage the tractor PTO. Set the tractor at the correct PTO speed. The ROTASLASHER is designed to work at a tractor PTO speed of 540rpm. Operating at speeds lower than this will not reduce wear and tear but on the contrary it will contribute to failures of the tractor or the ROTASLASHER. Shock loads, caused by hitting obstruction at low rpm, could cause serious damage to the tractor PTO or ROTASLASHER gearbox. Move off at a forward travel speed to suit the conditions. Avoid cutting too low as “scalping” will occur on undulating ground.

General operating guide: The type and density of the material, and the quality of cut required precludes hard and fast operating rules. The following are general guide lines, assuming a PTO speed of 540 rpm:

Brush cutting: Tractor speed to be slow.

Scrub clearing: Tractor speed to be slow.

Pasture topping: Tractor speed fast.

MAINTENANCE AND LUBRICATION

Universal drive line and universal joints: The universal drive shaft and universal joints are the most vulnerable part of your ROTASLASHER and regular maintenance of these components is essential to ensure adequate service life. The recommended preventative maintenance outlined below, if adhered to, will assist in achieving optimum life and minimize downtime. Lubricate universal joints, using lithium based grease. Ensure that the grease exudes from all four cups thus giving complete lubrication. Separate the two sections of the drive shaft clean and then lubricate the sliding surface with graphite powder or molybdenum disulphide grease. Seizure between these two sliding sections will create severe end thrust during lifting and lowering operations which will result in damage to the ROTASLASHER or tractor input shafts. When working in dusty conditions it is advisable to carry out this maintenance daily. Check universal joints for wear, if movement is found in excess of 0.4mm end play or 0.25mm radial movement. Replace the universal cross-shaft. Lubricate quick release pin with penetrating lubricant.

Safety clutch: The multi-plate safety clutch is located in front of the gearbox. As a general rule the clutch springs must be adjusted so that the clutch will drive the blade beam and blades through anything met in normal work, but will slip when unseen obstacles are hit. The clutch needs to be re-adjusted after the first ten hours work. If the ROTASLASHER is stored for any period of time, the clutch should be slackened off, and then reset when the ROTASLASHER returns to work.

Clutch setting: TO ADJUST THE CLUTCH TURN THE SPRING LOADED NUTS EVENLY UNTIL THE SPRINGS ARE FULLY COMPRESSED, AND THEN SLACKEN OFF THREE FULL TURNS. Ensure, whenever adjusting the clutch, that all the adjustments are even, i.e. the same amount of turn is given to each nut. In normal operations the temperature of the clutch should be no higher than the working temperature of the gearbox. If the clutch runs at a higher temperature it is slipping and must be tightened to the correct tension. Slipping clutches will lead to premature failure of the clutch plates, erratic turning of the blade beam and a poor finishing cut. Ensure the fastener securing the clutch disc to the input shaft is kept tight at all times.

Gearbox: The gearbox should be drained of oil and cleaned every 250 hours of operation. This should be done after the gearbox has been run and reached normal operating temperature. Unscrew the plug at the bottom of the spindle housing and allow draining. On completion of draining, refill the gearbox to the correct level with good quality SAE 140 hypoid oil. Check oil level on a regular basis.

Blade carrier and blades: The blades must be checked daily for wear or damage as out of balance blades will cause excessive vibration to the ROTASLASHER and tractor drive line. Blade bolts and blade carrier mounting bolts must be checked daily for tightness. Ensure there is no wrap around of grass or other material on the spindle as this could damage the spindle lower oil seal and cause oil leaks which could lead to gearbox failure.

When fitting new blades it is essential to fit new blade carrier bolts. Use of the old blade bolts could

lead to premature failure of the bolts with serious consequences to life, limb and property. Fitment of

non-genuine blades and bolts to the ROTASLASHER will nullify the year drive line warranty.
