+Term+ 3+ has+ been+ full+ of+ wonderful+music+making+ through+ significant+ performance+ opportunities+ for+students+in+our+public+school+instrumental+music+program.+

+Firstly,+ we+ had+ our+ OPUS+ concert+ on+ 30+ July+ 2018.+ + This+ was+ a+ great+celebration+ of+ 50+ years+ of+ instrumental+ music+ teaching+ in+ public+ schools.++This+concert+featured+outstanding+performances+from+all+schools+and+finished+with+ a+ really+ exciting+ performance+ of+ an+ excerpt+ of+ Star% Wars+ by+ the+combined+Gifted+and+Talented+Music+schools,+John+Curtin+College+of+the+Arts+and+Churchlands+Senior+High+School+with+the+John+Curtin+120Wvoice+choir+–+it+was+a+fitting+end+to+the+concert.++

The+festivals+that+we+support+have+become+wonderful+opportunities+for+students+to+perform+for+highly+experienced+adjudicators+and+ to+observe+other+ school+ ensembles.+ +The+choral+ festival+was+up+ first+early+in+August+and+then+there+was+the+Classical+Guitar,+Jazz,+Concert+Band,+Contemporary+popular+bands+and+Orchestra+Festival.+ +We+have+had+students+come+ from+as+ far+as+Carnarvon+ in+ the+north+and+Albany+ in+ the+south+–+ it+ has+been+a+marvellous+musical+ smorgasbord.+ +See+more+about+ these+festivals+in+this+edition+of+Music%Matters.++Term+4+is+the+time+when+schools+complete+their+planning+for+2019.++Most+primary+schools+undertake+a+selection+ process+ in+ order+ to+ identify+ students+ to+ participate+ in+ the+ instrumental+ program.+ + The+administration+ team+ of+ IMSS+ are+ working+ hard+ to+ ensure+ that+ we+ provide+ the+ best+ possible+opportunities+ and+ experiences+ for+ our+ students.+ + Please+ remember+ that+ each+ individual+ school+ is+responsible+ for+ the+ selection+ of+ students+ into+ the+ program+ even+ though+ decisions+ are+ made+ in+consultation+with+the+instrumental+teachers.++I+ trust+ the+ remainder+of+ the+year+will+ provide+plenty+of+exciting+musical+experiences+ for+all+ students+and+they+will+look+forward+to+continuing+their+musical+journey+next+year.+

OPUS'2018'Mr'Lee'Stanley'

Opus+ is+ the+ annual+ instrumental+ music+ showcase+ concert+ held+ at+ the+ Perth+ Concert+ Hall.+ + It+ is+ a+celebration+of+the+tremendous+music+making+that+goes+on+day+in+and+day+out+in+our+public+schools+in+Western+Australia.++It+gives+us+an+opportunity+to+present+a+cross+section+of+the+wonderful+work+that+the+Instrumental+Music+School+Services+delivers+throughout+the+state+and+across+a+wide+range+of+genres.++

+This+ year+ was+ no+ exception+ –+ there+ was+everything+ from+ a+ group+ of+ four+ young+contemporary+pop+musicians+ from+Ellenbrook+Secondary+College+who+ lit+ up+ the+ stage+with+their+ musicianship+ and+ fearlessness,+ through+to+ a+ combined+ full+ symphony+ orchestra+ and+choir+ numbering+ over+ 200+ students+ from+Churchlands+ Senior+ High+ School+ and+ John+Curtin+ College+ of+ the+ Arts,+ playing+ the+ Star%Wars+epic,+Duel%of%the%Fates.+(Pictured%right).++Poynter+ Primary+ School+ represented+ the+ primary+ sector+ through+ delightful+ voice+ and+ percussion,+joining+ forces+ with+ Tapestry+ Strings.+ + Perth+ Modern+ School’s+ Wind+ Orchestra+ and+ Choir+ were+ as+impeccable+as+ever.++Shenton+College+provided+a+flawless+helping+of+classical+guitar,+and+there+was+an+ invasion+ of+ viola+ players+ from+ a+ number+ of+ schools+ who+ brought+ the+ house+ down+ with+ their+rendition+of+Billie%Jean.++This+year+was+even+more+special+as+the+Instrumental+Music+School+Services+is+in+its+50th+year+and+so+it+was+very+much+‘Happy+Birthday+to+us’.++We+took+the+opportunity+to+tell+the+story+of+the+early+years+of+what+ was+ then+ called+ the+ schools’+ Music+ Branch.+ + At+ the+ start,+ in+ 1968,+ there+ were+ 19+ Year+ 11+students+and+36+Year+8+students+in+the+special+music+programme+at+Perth+Modern+School.++Here+we+are,+ 50+ years+ later,+ Instrumental+Music+School+Services+now+employs+over+ 250+ teachers,+ teaching+17,000+children+stateWwide.++It+was+truly+a+night+to+remember.++See+you+at+Opus+2019!+

WA'PUBLIC'SECONDARY'SCHOOLS’'CHORAL'FESTIVAL'2018'Ms'Nicolie'Sullivan'

Congratulations+and+WELL+DONE+to+all+of+those+choirs+that+participated+in+our+2018+Choral+Festival+on+Sunday+19+August+2018.++The+weather+was+incredible+at+24+degrees+with+no+hint+of+rain+to+dampen+our+spirits.+++We+had+11+choirs+ from+eight+ schools+performing+ in+ two+sessions+and+ two+choir+ directors+with+ their+choirs+experiencing+ their+ first+Choral+Festival+with+ Instrumental+Music+School+Services.+ +Although+ it+was+a+much+shorter+event,+finishing+at+1:15pm,+it+was+well+supported+and+enthusiastically+received+by+all+singers+and+parents.++We+saw+and+heard+ some+outstanding+performances+ from+choirs+ in+ the+Novice+and+Open+ sections.++Our+ adjudicator+ for+ this+ year,+ Sarah+ Mills+ Menogue,+ was+ very+ impressed+ and+ really+ enjoyed+ the+‘concert’.++Her+feedback+to+individual+choirs+was+constructive+and+encouraging,+and+this+was+reflected+in+her+comments+to+the+audience+and+singers+at+the+end+of+each+session.++My+ biggest+ thanks+ and+ appreciation+ go+ to+ the+ vocal+ staff+ who+ gave+ their+ time+ freely+ and+enthusiastically+to+this+event.+

WA'CLASSICAL'GUITAR'ENSEMBLE'FESTIVAL'2018'Ms'Michelle'Anderson'

This+year+marked+ the+30th+anniversary+of+ the+WA+Classical+Guitar+Ensemble+Festival.+ +The+ festival+began+on+the+Friday+evening+with+a+vibrant+performance+by+this+year’s+adjudicator,+Brazilian+guitarist+Chrystian+Dozza.++Saturday+25+and+Sunday+26+August+saw+43+guitar+ensembles+from+public+secondary+schools+across+Perth+ take+part+at+ the+Carine+Senior+High+School+Performing+Arts+Centre.+ +Tertiary,+private+schools+and+ community+ ensembles+ were+ also+ represented+ in+ the+ overall+ number+ of+ 59+ ensembles.+ + The+performance+sessions+were+well+attended+by+parents+and+family+members+of+the+performers.++After+their+performance,+ensembles+were+provided+with+written+feedback,+giving+valuable+critiques+on+specifics+such+as+ensemble+balance,+rhythmic+accuracy,+phrasing+and+tone+quality.++A+final+award+of+Outstanding,+Excellent,+Merit+or+Participation+was+given+to+each+of+the+ensembles.+

+The+festival+ran+like+clockwork+thanks+to+the+many+volunteers+ who+ generously+ gave+ their+ time+ over+the+ weekend.+ + The+ commitment+ of+ the+Instrumental+Music+School+Services’+guitar+staff+to+the+continued+success+of+the+festival+was+evident.++This+ important+event+ in+ the+education+ field+ is+ run+each+ year+ in+ conjunction+ with+ the+ WA+ Classical+Guitar+ Society+ and+ enhances+ links+ between+ the+guitar+ departments+ at+ IMSS+ and+ WA’s+ tertiary+institutions.++Backstage% at% the%WA%Guitar% Ensemble% Festival:%(left% to% right)% Keith% Perry,% Jonathan% Fitzgerald,%Melissa% Fitzgerald,% Chrystian% Dozza,% Joe% Bonini%and%Katie%Hadfield.%

WESTERN'AUSTRALIAN'SCHOOLS’'JAZZ'FESTIVAL'2018'Mr'Grant'Rickman'

The+ 24th+ Western+ Australian+ Schools’+ Jazz+ Festival+ was+ held+ on+Sunday+ 26+ August+ 2018+ at+ the+Western+Australian+Academy+of+Performing+Arts+(WAAPA).++The+festival+is+run+in+conjunction+with+the+Australian+Jazz+Education+Association+(AJEA)+and+the+Essentially+Ellington+Competition.++A+total+of+37+ensembles+ participated+ in+ the+ Australian+ Jazz+ Education+ Association+ section+ of+ the+ festival+ and+ a+further+nine+bands+played+in+the+Lincoln+Centre+Essentially+Ellington+Competition.++The+AJEA+section+of+the+festival+comprises+of+big+bands,+small+ensembles+(combo’s),+jazz+guitar+and+saxophone+ensembles.+There+was+also+a+performance+on+the+day+by+the+Western+Australian+Youth+Jazz+Orchestra+and+a+workshop+with+WAAPA+Jazz+staff,+Jamie+Oehlers+and+Tom+O’Halloran.++The+ main+ venue+ had+ drummer+ John+ Morrison+ and+ singer+ Jacki+ Cooper,+ both+ from+ Sydney,+adjudicating+ in+ the+Edith+Spiegeltent,+which+was+a+ fantastic+ venue+with+very+good+acoustics+ for+big+bands.+ The+ Combo’s+ were+ in+ The+ Music+ Box,+ with+ adjudication+ by+ Melissa+ Skinner+ and+ Russell+Holmes.++The+ IMSS+Events+Coordinator,+ Tanya+Chapman,+ provided+ her+ expertise+ programming+ the+ rooming+and+scheduling+for+the+festival.++The+Essentially+Ellington+component,+which+is+overseen+by+Nick+Quigley+from+Jazz+Music+Institute+in+Brisbane,+features+two+adjudicators+from+the+USA.++This+year+Vincent+Gardener+and+Jerome+Jennings+were+again+ representing+ the+Lincoln+Centre.+ +Both+ are+ consummate+musicians+and+educators+who+work+with+ the+Lincoln+Centre+Jazz+Orchestra+ led+by+Wynton+Marsalis.+ +This+competition+has+run+ for+many+ years+ in+ the+ USA+ and+ has+ for+ the+ past+ three+ years+ run+ as+ a+ regional+ festival+ at+ six+ venues+around+Australia.!

WA'PUBLIC'SCHOOLS’'CONTEMPORARY'MUSIC'ENSEMBLE'FESTIVAL'2018'Mr'John'Bailey'

On+Saturday+8+September+2018,+Canning+Vale+College+hosted+the+WA+Public+Schools’+Contemporary+Music+Ensemble+Festival.++42+bands+ranging+in+size,+from+trios+to+12Wpiece+small+rock+orchestras,+had+their+ 15+minutes+ of+ fame+on+ the+ big+ stage+with+ full+ concert+ sound+ and+ lighting+ and+ an+ enthusiastic+audience+of+family,+friends+and+fellow+musicians.+++The+first+band+hit+the+stage+at+8:30am+and+the+last+at+8:30pm.++Twelve+hours+of+continuous+ROCK!++It+was+a+bit+like+Woodstock,+without+the+mud.++There+was+a+lot+of+love,+peace+and+happiness+and+total+enjoyment+by+musicians+and+audience.++I+didn’t+hear+one+person+mention+the+word+‘footy’+even+after+the+Eagles/Collingwood+final+had+commenced+down+the+road.++Everybody's+mind+was+focused+on+the+music,+especially+mine.+ + I+had+ to+write+a+paragraph,+on+each+of+ the+120+songs,+on+my+adjudicators+sheet+ in+my+ best+ doctor’s+ handwriting.+ + Apologies+ to+ ensemble+ directors+who+may+ choose+ to+ read+between+the+lines.+++Without+going+into+a+summary+of+outstanding+performances,+I+have+to+say,+I+was+so+impressed+with+host+school+Canning+Vale+College,+who+opened+ the+show+with+ the+ first+ three+ensembles,+each+one+obviously+well+rehearsed+and+loving+what+they+were+doing.++Jeremy+ Peet,+ with+ help+ from+ Tanya+ Chapman,+Damien+Culverwell+ and+ IMSS+Contemporary+Guitar+staff,+put+together+a+great+festival.++The+event+ran+to+schedule,+ the+ sound+ and+ lighting+ was+ perfect,+ the+standard+ of+ performance+ was+ excellent+ and+ as+ a+result+ the+audience+ loved+ it.+ +Hats+off+ to+Jeremy+ for+the+way+he+operates+proactively+ to+ensure+possible+problems+ are+ avoided.+ + The+ twelve+ hours+ flew+ by!++Jeremy%Peet%directing%the%Perth%Modern%School%Intermediate%Contemporary%Ensemble%(right).%

WA'SCHOOLS’'JUNIOR'CONCERT'BAND'AND'ORCHESTRA'FESTIVALS'2018'Mrs'Amanda'Noordzy'

The+38th+and+29th+annual+WA+Schools’+Junior+Concert+Band+and+Orchestra+Festivals+were+held+on+6W9+September+2018+at+Churchlands+Senior+High+School’s+Concert+Hall+and+Auditorium+venues.++These+festivals+ are+ organised+ by+ the+ Australian+ Band+ and+ Orchestra+ Directors’+ Association+ (WA)+ Inc+ in+conjunction+ with+ the+ Department+ of+ Education’s+ Instrumental+ Music+ School+ Services.+ + They+ are+sponsored+ by+ Yamaha+ Music+ Australia,+ Tempest+ Music,+ Churchlands+ Senior+ High+ School,+ Edith+Cowan+University’s+School+of+Education+and+the+University+of+Western+Australia’s+Conservatorium+of+Music.++Schools+ from+ across+ the+ state,+ representing+ both+ private+ and+ public+ sectors,+ were+ given+ the+opportunity+ for+ their+ young+musicians+ to+ perform+ in+ a+ positive+ environment+ and+ to+ participate+ in+ an+interactive+ workshop+ where+ direct+ feedback+ is+ provided+ to+ the+ ensembles+ from+ one+ of+ the+adjudicators.++++This+year’s+adjudicators+were+Jessica+Gethin+(Perth+Symphony+and+Chamber+Orchestra),+Dr+Geoffrey+Lowe+ (Senior+ Lecturer,+ Music+ Education,+ Edith+ Cowan+ University),+ Greg+ Peterson+ (arranger,+composer+and+band+officer+Australian+Army),+Dale+Pointon+(teacher+and+lecturer+ in+music+education+IMSS,+UWA+and+ECU),+Matt+Klohs+ (mentor+and+ training+manager+ for+ the+Australian+Defence+Force+band+ conductors),+ Matthew+ O’Keefe+ (Music+ Director+ of+ the+ Australian+ Army+ Band,+ Perth),+ Mark+Sullivan+(educator+and+string+clinician+Queensland)+and+Stephen+Williams+(Conducting+CoWordinator+and+Programs+Officer+for+the+Arts+unit+N.S.W.+Department+of+Education).++The+ workshops+ I+ witnessed+ as+ Adjudicators’+ Assistant+ across+ the+ Thursday,+ Friday+ and+ Saturday+sessions+ were+ educational,+ entertaining+ and+ interactive.+ + Audience+ members+ were+ encouraged+ to+participate+ in+ support+ of+ their+ young+ performers’+ skill+ acquisition.+ +Our+ very+ own+Dale+Pointon+was+highly+engaging,+building+specific+technique+from+young+players+and+encouraging+active+listening+and+responsibility+to+the+overall+performance,+delivered+with+a+unique+sensitivity+and+sense+of+humour+to+the+delight+of+ensembles+and+audiences+alike.++Feedback+across+the+course+of+ the+festival+was+overwhelmingly+positive+and+a+sincere+ thank+you+ is+extended+ to+ the+ IMSS+ staff+ and+ ABODA(WA)+ committee+ members,+ whom+ without+ their+ hours+ of+dedicated+volunteering,+ the+ festivals+simply+would+not+ run.+ +Finally,+Tanya+Chapman’s+expert+event+management+skills+yet+again+shone+though+ensuring+a+wellWtimed+and+expertly+organised+event.++++

Term+3+has+been+a+very+busy+one+for+the+Southwest+IMSS+community+and+Regional+Schools.+Some+of+the+successful+events+that+have+taken+place+this+term+includes:+'The+Queen’s+Cup+–+A+huge+threeWday+band+competition+including+a+Friday+night+Jazz+Night,+Saturday+solos+and+parties+and+brass+band+competition,+and+Sunday+concert+band+contest.+“The%Queen’s%Cup%is%an%event%for%brass,% jazz%and%concert%bands%from%schools%and%communities%from%the%Southwest%of%WA.% %Providing%an%opportunity% for%bands%and% their%members% to%compete%against%each%other%and% to%make%new% friends%within% the%banding% community.”+ (Facebook+page).+ +Many+ school+ and+ community+ensembles+ from+ the+area+ took+part,+and+a+special+ thanks+goes+ to+Nicky+Hair,+Andrew+MacKayWSim+and+Jessica+Moore+for+organising+and+running+the+event+at+Australind+Senior+High+School+this+year.+'

Workshops+ –+ This+ term,+ Instrumental+Music+ School+ Services+ staff+have+ been+ running+ their+ instrumental+ workshops+ in+ a+ cluster+ area+format,+allowing+ the+primary+school+students+ to+work+ together+with+older+ students+ from+ their+ local+ high+ school+ (pictured% left).+ + This+allows+ younger+ students+ to+ forge+ friendships+ with+ older+ music+students,+ and+ for+ the+ older+ students+ to+ take+ a+ mentoring+ role,+helping+the+new+musicians+to+play+ the+workshop+music+ to+ the+best+of+ their+ ability,+ and+ being+ positive+ role+ models+ for+ them.+ + These+workshops+aid+the+primary+school+students+in+their+transition+to+high+

school+from+contact+made+and+friendships+forged+with+older+students.++Everyone+has+had+a+lot+of+fun+playing+music+together!++Musical+Production+–+Busselton+Senior+High+School+has+had+their+biWannual+musical+production+–+The%Wild% West+ –+ a+ fun+ foray+ into+ the+ world+ of+ the+ Wild+ West+ for+ the+ students.+ + The+ show+ ran+ six+performances+over+two+weeks+and+involved+music+students+from+Geographe+Bay+Music,+and+matinee+performances+for+the+local+primary+school+students.++Anniversaries+–+Busselton+Senior+High+School+had+ its+60th+Anniversary+Jazz+Night,+and+Cape+Naturaliste+College+had+its+10th+Anniversary+which+included+a+Jazz+Combo+Performance.+'Festivals+–+Many+of+the+Southwest+Bands+travelled+to+the+Perth+for+the+WA+ Schools’+ Junior+ Concert+ Band+ Festival.+ + All+ of+ the+ groups+ from+Bunbury+ Senior+ High+ School+ performed,+ as+ well+ as+ the+ Combined+Collie/Donnybrook+ Band.+ + All+ bands+ and+ their+ directors+ are+ to+ be+congratulated+on+successful+performances+in+this+event,+including+Geoff+Ogden,+Nick+Vane+and+Phil+Luke.+'Vietnam+ Veterans+ Day+ –+ Year+ 10+ brass+ student,+ Callum+ Gray++(pictured%right),+played+for+the+Vietnam+Veterans+Day+at+the+memorial+in+Donnybrook.++He+is+taught+by+Wendy+Armstrong+at+Donnybrook+District+High+School.++Community+Music+Events+–+The+Southwest+has+a+very+active+community+Music+scene,+and+there+are+many+ regular+ rehearsals+and+special+events+scheduled+ for+ the+ remainder+of+ this+year.+ +One+special+event+this+year+is+the+Southwest+Opera+Company+production+of+Phantom%of%the%Opera+at+the+Bunbury+Regional+ Entertainment+ Centre+ in+ Bunbury.+ + Many+ of+ our+ IMSS+ teachers+ are+ involved+ in+ the+ pit+orchestra+ for+ this+ production+ and+ one+ of+ our+ teachers,+Michelle+BrackenWPerks+will+ be+ treading+ the+boards+with+a+key+vocal+role+in+the+performance.++Shows+start+from+10+October+2018.'

We+have+had+a+very+busy+year+ in+ the+Music+Department+at+Narrogin+Senior+High+School.+ +Earlier+ in+ the+year,+ our+ Senior+ Concert+ Band+ were+ involved+ in+ a+ range+ of+ community+ events+ including+ local+ Twilight+Markets,+the+Wagin+Woolorama+and+the+combined+schools’+ANZAC+Ceremony.++We+also+had+WAYJO+visit+us+ as+ part+ of+ their+ Regional+ Tour!+ + In+ Term+ 2+ all+ the+ instrumental+ students+ attended+ a+music+ camp+ in+Albany+to+rehearse+for+the+upcoming+band+festivals+and+participate+in+a+range+of+camp+activities.++Term+3+was+jamWpacked+full+of+experiences+for+our+music+students!++We+travelled+up+to+Perth+to+listen+to+WASO+rehearse+with+James+Morrison+and+explored+future+study+opportunities+at+Edith+Cowan+University+and+ the+ Western+ Australian+ Academy+ of+ Performing+ Arts.+ + We+ had+ an+ American+ composer,+ Darryl+Johnson,+work+with+the+Senior+and+Junior+Concert+Bands+as+part+of+his+Australian+tour+(what+an+amazing+opportunity+ that+ was!)+ and+ both+ bands+ participated+ in+ the+ WA+ Schools’+ Junior+ Concert+ Band+ Festival+(another+awesome+experience+for+our+students!).++Next+term+involves+more+community+events+for+the+Senior+Band+including+Narrogin+Senior+High+School’s+Year+12+Presentation+Evening,+the+Narrogin+Show+and+Spring+Festival.++A+group+of+instrumental+students+are+ invited+ to+ prepare+ performances+ for+ a+Senior’s+Week+ event+ and+ of+ course+we+ have+ our+ final+Music+Concert+for+the+year!++Although+a+busy+one,+we+have+had+a+very+enjoyable+year+at+Narrogin+Senior+High+School,+providing+many+opportunities+and+valuable+experiences+for+our+students.+

Say%Something%music+clip:++http://www.music.uwa.edu.au/mhw++The+music+clip+was+created+to+raise+awareness+about+youth+suicide+and+mental+health+statistics+and+was+released+for+WA+Mental+Health+Week,+which+runs+from+7–14+October.++Current+statistics+indicate+that+one+in+seven+young+Australians+will+experience+a+mental+health+condition+over+the+course+of+their+adolescent+years.++Rates+of+youth+suicide+in+Australia+are+the+highest+they+have+been+in+10+years.++Suicide+is+the+biggest+killer+ of+ young+Australians+ and+ accounts+ for+ the+ deaths+ of+more+ young+ people+ each+ year+ than+ car+accidents+ (Beyond% Blue,% 2018).+ + Justin+ Timberlake's+ Say% Something+ was+ chosen+ as+ a+ means+ of+reminding+young+people+of+ the+ importance+of+speaking+out+ if+ they+are+not+ feeling+safe+or+OK+within+themselves.++The+ Passion+ Project+ was+ produced,+ coWdirected+ and+ choral+ directed+ by+ Christie+ Pannell,+ a+ voice+teacher+ and+ choral+ director+ from+ Instrumental+ Music+ School+ Services,+ over+ the+ course+ of+ Term+ 3+2018.++A+total+of+90+students+from+six+schools+were+involved+in+the+process,+along+with+10+professional+musicians+and+music+teachers+predominantly+from+Instrumental+Music+School+Services+and+the+Perth+music+community.++The+students+ from+Wanneroo+Secondary+College,+Ocean+Reef+Senior+High+School,+Butler+College,+Thornlie+Senior+High+School,+Cecil+Andrews+and+Ellenbrook+Secondary+College+spent+seven+weeks+in+the+ leadWup+ to+ recording+ learning+ a+ choral+ arrangement+ by+ Mac+ Huff+ in+ fourWpart+ harmony.+ + This+arrangement+ included+ counterWmelodies+ with+ some+ in+ threeWpart+ harmony.+ + Hence,+ hourWlong+ choir+sessions+occurred+at+each+school+across+Perth+every+week+–+led+by+Christie+Pannell+(and+assisted+by+Victoria+O'Neil+W+Instrumental+Music+School+Services+Teacher,+via+students+provided+from+Ellenbrook+Secondary+College).++The+students+had+not+sung+together+until+the+day+of+the+audio+recording.++They+endured+a+full+day+of+filming+and+adapted+incredibly+well+to+the+process+and+having+to+smile+and+repeat+scenes+continually.++Notably,+they+did+an+incredible+job+and+many+friendships+across+the+schools+have+formed+as+a+result.++All+vocals+were+performed+by+the+students+including+the+vocal+electronic+loops+at+the+beginning+of+the+track,+which+were+sung+by+Maddie+Ngatai+and+Andrie+Subih+from+Butler+College.++The+soloists+were+Joel+Kirkbright+from+Wanneroo+Secondary+College+and+Andrie+Subih+from+Butler+College.++

1.+ The+double+bass+gets+ its+ name+ from+ the+ fact+ that+ it+ originally+ doubled+ the+bass+line+in+ensembles.++It+is+also+known+as+an+upright+bass,+contrabass,+string+bass+or+simply+a+bass.++

2.+ The+double+bass+is+the+largest+and+lowest+pitched+bowed+string+instrument+in+the+modern+symphony+orchestra.+ +An+average+double+bass+stands+at+approximately+six+feet+or+182cm+tall.++On+a+standard+4Wstring+double+bass+the+lowest+note+is+E1.++

3.+ The+ double+ bass+ is+ a+ transposing+ instrument,+ sounding+ one+ octave+ lower+ than+written.++The+strings+are+tuned+in+4ths+like+the+viol.++

By'Jim'Finn,'10'April'2015.'+In+2005+ the+Australian+Government+ released+ the+National+Review+of+School+Music+Education+which+found+a+lack+of+meaningful+musical+education+throughout+Australian+schools.++As+is+well+known,+we+at+Music+Australia+strongly+advocate+for+meaningful+music+education+for+all+children,+in+all+schools,+at+all+ages.++ While+ many+ benefits+ of+ a+ musical+ education+ are+ well+ known,+ many+ more+ are+ still+ being+discovered.++A+new+study+recently+published+in+the+journal+Frontiers+in+Neuroscience+has+shown+a+strong,+positive+link+ between+music+ education+ and+ academic+ achievement.+ +The+ study+ followed+ 147+ children+ in+ six+Dutch+schools+over+two+and+a+half+years.+++The+children+were+divided+into+groups+based+on+receiving+a+ music+ education,+ a+ visual+ arts+ education,+ or+ no+ inclusion+ of+ arts+ in+ their+ normal+ education+curriculum.++The+groups+receiving+music+and+arts+education+were+given+both+theoretical+and+practical+lessons.++After+ two+ and+ a+ half+ years,+ the+ children+ were+ assessed+on+ their+ academic+ performance+and+ other+cognitive+skills+such+as+problemWsolving,+inhibition,+memory+power,+and+verbal+IQ.+The+results+showed+that+ the+ children+ who+ received+ a+ music+ education+ experienced+ significant+ cognitive+ improvements+compared+to+the+other+groups+in+the+study.++The+ study’s+ lead+ author,+Dr.+ Artur+ Jaschke+said,+ “Children+ who+ received+ music+ lessons+ showed+improved+languageWbased+reasoning+and+the+ability+to+plan,+organize+and+complete+tasks,+as+well+as+improved+academic+achievement”.++Interestingly,+the+children+who+received+a+visual+arts+education+experienced+a+significant+improvement+in+visual+and+spatial+shortWterm+memory+compared+with+the+other+groups.++The+researchers+hope+the+results+of+the+study+will+highlight+the+importance+of+music+and+the+arts+as+an+integral+part+of+the+school+curriculum.++To+access+the+original+article,+please+go+to:++https://musicaustralia.org.au/2018/04/musicWeducationWboostsWacademicWachievement/?utm_source=Music+Australia+Newsletter+List&utm_campaign=e64ce60635WMusic+Australia+ENewsletter+18+January+2017&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f536243dd9We64ce60635W249698485++
