Beauvais — Hauts-de-France 15e édition

For this 15th edition of the Photaumnales, in a year of multiple commemorations, the programme of exhibitions we are presenting is based on questioning the memorial relationship of photography to history by confronting multiple and varied approaches to this theme.«Where Memory is Lodged» explores the diversity of relationships ontologically held by photography with time. From presence in the landscape of the traces of collective memory to the observation of modifications to the landscape, the images presented in this edition construct a contemporary history which resonates with works from various archives. There are 27 photographers presented through thematic or monographic exhibitions. Many visits and workshops are offered as part of the image education programme which allows a wide audience to discover the multiplicity of artistic approaches and to better understand the language of images.

The international openness of Photaumnales is confirmed through the carte blanche given to partner festivals: Photolux in Italy, Kaunas Photo Festival in Lithuania, the Rencontres internationales de la Photographie in Gaspésie, Quebec and the Triennale Photographie et Architecture in Brussels. The festival this year reinforces its presence in the region by presenting exhibitions in the cities of Amiens, Beauvais, Clermont, Creil, Noyon and Douchy-les-Mines, and in the galleries of many schools. This autumn of photography in the Hauts-de-France region will again this year witness the shedding of numerous images waiting to be scooped up.

Ambroise TÉZENASTourism of Desolation

Ambroise Tézenas has investigated the phenomenon known as “dark tourism”, which consists of visiting places marked by tragedy. Earthquakes, tsunamis, accidents, industrial disasters, disaster areas or destitute are all potential «destinations» and sites whose discovery is able to fill the ambiguous curiosity of a growing number of followers.

The photographer selected a dozen emblematic places, and registered with tour operators to be immersed in the same experience as any other tourist. For the sake of accuracy, he took care to photograph only what visitors could see. From the massacre at Oradour-sur-Glane in 1944 to the ruins of the 2008 Sichuan Province earthquake in China, Ambroise Tézenas crosses the 20th century, including Cambodia, Rwanda, Ukraine and Lebanon. He draws up an inventory of these organised trips of a new kind, which he summarises in one sentence: «Here, we come to check a nightmare».

Born in 1972 in Paris, Ambroise Tézenas graduated from the School of Applied Arts in Vevey (Switzerland) in 1994. Based in London and Paris, he is represented by Galerie Mélanie Rio in Paris. His work is regularly published in the international press and appears in several collective works on the European landscape.Tourisme de la désolation, Actes Sud, 2014www.ambroisetezenas.com

Sibylle BERGEMANNDas Denkmal (The Monument) Proposed by the CRP / Regional Centre for Photography in Hauts-de-France, from its collection

Between 1975 and 1986, Sybille Bergemann produced a set of photographs documenting the construction of the Marx-Engels Forum in the Mitte district of East Berlin. Through this series, we follow the various stages of the monument’s construction. It was commissioned by the GDR authorities to pay tribute to the founding fathers and theoreticians of the communist movement. The bronze statues of Marx and Engels in the centre of the forum were designed by the sculptor Ludwig Engelhardt. Throughout the images, these two great men can be seen in all states, whether suspended in the air, truncated or packed, the subject of premonitory visions full of humour, both dreamlike and poetic.

«In her photographs, Sibylle Bergemann completes reality with her own dreams, making banality poetic. This is linked to her background, the country called GDR, which for various reasons felt obliged to degrade, cleanse, cut and castrate. The hems of the skirts were pulled down and the corners of the mouths pulled up, the broken plaster was retouched, and the bins removed. Throughout these years of orderly optimism, the photographer captured the seriousness of things. Faced with the threatened individuality, she responded with absurdities and sadness. Melancholy as a means of defending the subjective, the individual... the incalculable.” — Excerpt from an article by Jutta Voigt for Freitag review.

Sibylle Bergemann (1941-2010) was one of the leaders in the revival of German photography. She became a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts after reunification and was one of the co-founders of the OSTKREUZ photography agency alongside Arno Fisher.

Claude DITYVONComme un souffle

What were known as ‘the events’ became, for Claude Dityvon a true field of visual adventures. He was already seeking what would later be found developed in his images, namely ‘man’s place in urban space’.

Dityvon captures and shares an atmosphere, a state of mind, an air of liberty that suited him perfectly. He who said, “The street spoke. Me, I speak. And looking is also a way of speaking”, found, without apparent effort, with unequalled fluidity of framing because he does not seek to be demonstrative, a form of urban poetry at those moments of intense confrontation.

So Claude Raimond-Dityvon’s May 68 is anything but reportage. It could be described as a chronicle, in the best sense of the term, or a journal, almost a notebook, as if he had been on a trip around a troubled Paris in which he had landed somewhat by chance. No symbolic image, no document to accompany the headlines of the dailies or magazines, no seeking to go down in history. Just a discernible pleasure at having been lucky enough to be there, at that time, and able to capture the images without the constraints getting in the way. He managed to show what is between things, what is not seen and that seems like a music of words and the rustle of the streets, his way of taking t(he pulse. And that is already quite something. — Christian Caujolle MAI 68 - État des lieux, CLAUDE DITYVON / André Frère Éditions

Claude Dityvon (1937-2008) won the Niepce prize in 1970 and in 1972 was a cofounder of Agence Viva, which he managed until 1980 with his wife Chris. He left an important body of work on various themes, always with Man as central subject.

Patrick TOURNEBŒUF Stèles, the invisible (création)

Since 2003, Patrick Tournebœuf has devoted part of his work to recording the stigmata of history, through four series: The Scar, on traces of the Berlin Wall, The memory of D-Day, on the Normandy landing beaches, Monolith on the natural disappearance of blockhouses from the coastal landscape, and Steles on the monuments to the dead of the Great War.

In every town or village, some trace of the conflict is preserved in honour of those who were lost during the Great War: war memorials have become steles in the very heart of the settlement. Like landmarks, they are to be found in the forecourts of town halls, on market squares, in front of the church or in the middle of the cemetery. These first traces of commemoration bear witness to this history linking the intimate to the universal, revealing for each municipality its positioning through the choice of the geographical location of the monument, the metaphorical representation of the political or simply of the economic means available. These steles save from oblivion the acts, and especially the names, of all those who went through the unspeakable horror of the war. Created by commissioned artists of various origins and approaches, these sculptures were put up like so many tall figures erected to stand against time. They perpetuate the pain of the country through allegory, and thus transcend memory.

Born in 1966 in Paris, Patrick Tournebœuf is a member of the collective Tendance Floue.http://tendancefloue.net

Susan TRANGMARUNFOUND Film 23’42’’

One starts by identifying a place on a map. Then, by driving or walking, a place is arrived at. A first visit takes place with the arrival of spring, fertile and green. The cemeteries appear arbitrarily, dotted within the landscape. Their intimate serenity or exposed, stark brutality can be shocking. ROSSIGNOL WOOD. SUNKEN ROAD. Entering each enclosure, there is always a sense of crossing a boundary. The efflorescence of nature creeps up to the external perimeter, ready to reclaim the ground. GUARDS. QUEENS. GUNNERS.One walks up and down the lines inspecting each headstone, feeling the imperative to take note of every single name, every inscription, every memorial, even though this is impossible. The more names are read, the less the imagination is able to make sense of the scale of destruction they represent. Names pile up as a monstrous accumulation of wasted potential. BITTER.For some, the need to forget is the only kind way to carry on. For others, to return is a compulsion. Writing is always at hand to attempt an explanation and an opportunity to translate and re-iterate.

Susan Trangmar was born in Brighton. She has worked for many years with the photographic image in a variety of media: still photography, projection installation, moving image and sound. Cléa COUDSI & Éric HERBIN

Les soupirants / Chemins sur feuille d’être (Suitors / Paths on Leaves of Being)

During their residency at the Historial de la Grande-Guerre de Péronne, Cléa Coudsi and Éric Herbin picked up tree leaves here and there. Each leaf is the trace of the place where it was picked up, a piece of landscape. On these leaves they used a laser to engrave, like a tattoo, two series of images: one of faces (Paths on Leaves of Being), the other with texts (Suitors). This technique was inspired by a series of dried and hollowed leaves preserved at the Historial of the Great War. These leaves, almost intact, seem to have escaped the vicissitudes of time. The texts comprise excerpts from letters written during the Great War. The typography chosen to transcribe these epistolary fragments is the one used for the words engraved on the marble of memorials. The fragility of dried plant replaces the eternity of marble. The epistolary bursts take the place of aligned names and dates. The veins of the leaves evoke neural networks and geographical maps. Through this technique, the motif (whether portrait or text) merges with its support.

This work was created in 2016-2017 as part of the Paysages en Résonance project, producedby the Historial de la Grande-Guerre de Péronne-Thiepval, with aid from the Regional Directorate of cultural affairs in the region of Hauts-de-France.

Cléa Coudsi was born in 1980 and Éric Herbin was born in 1979. They both live and work in Lille. They studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Dunkerque, Dijon and Aix-en-Provence, as well as at Fresnoy, National Studio of Contemporary Arts. They have shared a workspace since 2002. Their works mix video, sound, mechanical installations and photography.www.paysagesenresonance.fr

Sophie ZÉNONTo Live Here Film 17’12’’

Pour Vivre Ici [To live here], title borrowed from a poem by Paul Eluard, is a film made during a creative residency in 2017 (Abri mémoire, Uffholtz) on the Vosges site of Hartmannswillerkopf (HWK), important First World War site, also called «The Old Armand» or «The Man Eater». It addresses the issue of restoring the memory of a place of conflict during the First World War. The notions of identity and of the frontier run through this project steeped in contemporary history, at a precise moment in our history where Europe is threatened, confronted with the rise of the nationalism and where never in the world have there been so many walls erected between peoples.Halfway between documentary and aesthetic research, based on the work of scientists such as botanists and National Forest Office staff, this work provides an interpretation of the place from its forest and an approach to the site through those who live there, being close to it, experiencing it. Dazzling lights, vibrant landscapes, superimpositions of archival documents and natural elements made in situ, constitute the context of a personal expression reflecting both the spirit of the places and the way in which people have learned to live with this forest. The central character of the film, Raoul Ermel, a carpenter living at the foot of the HWK, initiated by his grandfather – a veteran at the HWK – at the site, provides a sensitive testament to his relationship with the forest. As a counterpoint, Manuela Morgaine, an artist, reads passages from the journal of officer cadet Henri Martin, present at the HWK in 1915 (Le Vieil Armand, 1915, Payot, 1936), a journal chosen for the wealth of both humanity literary qualities in its texts.

Born in Seine-Maritime in 1965, Sophie Zénon is represented by the galleries Thessa Herold (Paris), Les Comptoirs Arlésiens (Arles) and Schilt (Netherlands). Pour vivre ici, Loco editions, 2018www.sophiezenon.com

These images are striking in the way they singularly recall the look of the landscapes before the beginning of the combat and massive artillery shelling. What is noticeable is their flatness, lack of relief, the rarity of shelter they provide, so much so that the least group of trees, the slightest worn-down path, the shallowest valley was immediately transformed into a strategic position, a tactical advantage point. It is almost impossible today to look at these scenes of rural calm without discerning their military potential. However, these photographs are much more than mere sources of historical evidence – they are memorable in themselves, and show what a great landscape photographer Jean-Pierre Gilson is. American critic Janet Malcolm says: “If you scratch a photograph you find… a painting”. This aphorism is perhaps never as true as when it comes to landscapes. This analogy, however, has a limit: almost no painted landscape is monochrome. And it is Gilson’s monochromatic landscape that makes them particularly memorable, making them exceptional images, not just topographic surveys.— William Boyd

Céline CLANETReserved Access

At the request of the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs of Normandy and the Regional Association for the Dissemination of the Image (Ardi-Photographies) in Caen, I spent two years exploring the three official residences of the prefects of Lower Normandy, national heritage whose access is prohibited to the public. Everywhere can be found long corridors, ceremonial salons, the smell of woodwork, antique furniture, and the indiscreet creak of floorboards, as well as conscientious staff engaged in ironing, serving, cooking and maintaining these often splendid classified buildings.

It was always surprising that there were no family photos or personal objects to be seen. These places are simply the secret boxes providing a sleeping place for a senior civil servant, a high-ranking soldier of the state, who only works for a few years or a few months before making way for the successor.

The three prefects, and several staff members, kindly agreed to participate in my project. I photographed them as silent inhabitants within pictorial surroundings, temporary occupants in places that are larger than them, these places which mainly fulfil a function, that of representing it.

Hélène MARCOZConcrete Jungle / Landscape(s) vidéo 10’

Concrete Jungle Double exposure is used here to record on a single negative the changing course of shadows produced by rotation of the Earth within dehumanised architectural spaces.

The question of gradation is combined with the desire to reinterpret light and dark and to play, at the level of composition, with simple geometric patterns, coupled with their shadows. By way of duality, a tension is established between the fixed, immutable architectural subject and its shadow, which becomes more dynamic and even kinetic.

Landscape(s) I filmed various landscapes for a year with exactly the same framing in order to collect a memory, a visual vocabulary to subsequently write the script upon editing.During the editing phase, the video image is divided into several parts that slowly fade from one into the next, revealing a videorama that combines several seasons simultaneously. This landscape, as it appears before our eyes, never really existed. Projected in a loop, in large format, it gives the impression of a living tableau, time that is suspended and infinite.— Hélène Marcoz

Gaël CLARIANAHere Soon

Gaël Clariana has photographed the emergence of suburban areas under construction.

In new and artificial environments, construction equipment and material resemble the pieces of an assembly game on a monumental scale, with houses displayed as bare, empty shells, disturbing or derisory in their impersonality and similarities. Attentive to the homogeneity of colours between images, Gaël Clariana focuses on the rigorous geometry of structures and the bareness of surfaces, the way in which the design of pavilions articulates an empty and sterile space. These works illustrate a wholly current form of urban development. They provide a critical view of the expansion of towns in outlying areas of individual and suburban housing, which have overturned town planning traditionally organised around transport axes, shopping zones and residential islands. The photographs of Gaël Clariana consitute the memory of ephemeral spaces that generally neglected in favour of a more complete and perennial vision of the urban landscape.— Olivier Grasser

Emilie Vialet photographs real zoos, Christoph Sillem real cities, the first across Europe, the other around Paris Disneyland. They do not know each other and their respective subjects are not directly related. Yet the spaces they document are part of the same process: that of celebration. Without looking too much, everything seems to be going for the best in the best of all worlds. However, the diagnosis is without appeal: beyond what embodies it, an architectural style on the one hand or the idealisation of nature on the other, the two photographers deal specifically with the false strategy of a double captivity. In one case, it is a question of controlling the public space, more precisely its absence, visible from the Tower of the Sleeping Beauty of Globalized Capital, while in the other case, it is a question of pacifying the landscape dominated by our predatory anthropocentrism.

In vain, but deliberately, Emilie Vialet and Christoph Sillem seek in their photography of absence some part of humanity at the heart of this cynical celebration.— Marc Mawet

Andrej VASILENKO The Walk (création)

Lithuanian photographer Andrej Vasilenko was invited to a creative residency in Beauvais, where he continued to work on the peri-urban landscape. This series, entitled La Promenade [The Walk], testifies to the photographer’s moments of wandering around the town, capturing artefacts of the spaces and the temporal aspects inherent in the various types of architecture.

«Throughout the residency, I tried to walk as much as I could to explore different areas of the town. As a photographer, I am interested in the identity of places and the way people organise their lives. I am interested in the relationship between past and present in urban space and architecture. The Walk is a small alternative guide to the areas and architecture of Beauvais.”— Andrej Vasilenko

Andrej Vasilenko was selected for his series “This is Vilnius”, as part of the ERA (European Residency Award), after portfolio readings in Lithuania. This award demonstrates the decision of three festivals – Kaunas Photo festival in Lithuania, Photolux festival in Lucca, Italy and Photaumnales in France – to work together and exchange on contemporary European creation.

Born in 1985 in Lithuania, Andrej Vasilenko, a graduate of the Vilnius Academy of Arts in 2009, lives and works in Vilnius.http://andrejvasilenko.lt

Tadas KAZAKEVIČIUSSoon to be GoneInvitation to Kaunas Photo festival (Lithuania)Exhibition curator: Mindaugas Kavaliauskas

Over the past decade, continuous migration has reduced Lithuania’s population by almost one-sixth. Cities have sucked in the economy and young people. One question inevitably arises: how long will our forests and valleys be adorned with views of farms and villages – places where a totally different understanding of time and proximity still exists? How long will there be places where a visitor will be greeted by a sincere «hello»?

Whenever a thought like this crosses my mind, I, as a photographer, feel driven by instinct to quickly turn these symbols and places into something more than mere memories in the stories of future grandparents. Even if a recorded image is unable to revive what has been lost, it still reminds us of something that perhaps once momentarily attracted our attention along the roadside. Maybe this tribute to the Lithuanian countryside will evoke certain sentimentality on the part of the viewer and touch those deeply hidden corners of the memory we have, apparently inadvertently, shut out.— Tadas Kazakevičius

Li SUNG HUA A Postman DiaryExhibition curator: Nicolas Havette

Li Sung Hua was born in 1979 in Tainan, Jiali District, Taiwan. After studying physical education at university, he became a postman in 2005 and made daily tours in Shanhua District, north of Tainan, far from the «modern city». In 2013, he began to photograph his daily life with his trusty motorcycle and mobile phone.

His images allow us to penetrate with great humility into the heart of a village where the last house on the left has just seen its occupant join the spirits, a wheat field that he has the joy of seeing evolve with every action carried out by farmers, a country road that gradually gets lined with concrete buildings, roads he is afraid to go down because he knows that wild dogs are waiting for him, sunrises and sunsets accompanying the lives of his contemporaries oscillating between tradition and the modernity that Taiwan plunged into over the last quarter of the twentieth century. He accompanies this life that the national media has almost stopped covering. He shares his images on Instagram, where he now has nearly 45,000 followers. In 2019 he will publish his second book and continue tirelessly throughout the seasons to share with us, via our small screens, images of a simple and curious life, a small story within the big one.

This exhibition is being presented for the first time at Photaumnales and at the Tainan Photography Biennale in November 2018.— Nicolas Havette

Nicolas Havette is a photographer and artistic director of the Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation, Zhengzhou Chinese International Photography and Art Festival (Henan Province, China) and the first Tainan International Photo Festival (Taiwan).

My photographic research questions the borders of my origins, the places I belong to, my inner landscapes, those of my memory. My childhood passion for maps, atlases and globes comes across in this work through the choice of a map route to navigate along the coastline that defines the limits of Naples, the city I was born in and where I practise my art.

Along the shoreline marked on the nautical chart, I explored a different stretch of coast every day and, as in a logbook, I noted my conclusions, the traces of my passage, my reflections, putting together the Imaginary archives of the sea and its variations, its changes in relation to space, climate and my whims.

Sea mapping is an aquatic diagram in which alternate watery blues, ranging from cobalt blue to greenish aquamarine, along with white foam and the geographical lines of my inner ocean. This is a liquid map, a geography of thought, in which the oscillation of the sea evokes my hidden archipelago.— Ilaria Abbiento

Marco TIBERIO & Maria GHETTI ImmoRefugee

In 2016, Marco Tiberio and Maria Ghetti published ImmoRefugee, a photo book that looks like a magazine of classified real estate ads, covering a large residential area of 500,000 m2 in the suburbs of Calais, France.Surrounded by a metal fence, five metres high and equipped with running water and lights, the New Jungle offers different types of housing, old and new. This is no joke.

In Calais, more than 6,000 refugees lived in the same conditions as those shown here. The camp has now been demolished.Throughout the pages, photographs of fragile huts made of tarpaulins, fabrics and wooden planks are presented as a «superb deal» with «high quality finish». The Calais Jungle has been dismantled. By keeping track of its precarious habitats, ImmoRefugee provides a poignant testimony to the sad condition of the men and women who lived there.

Defrost is a creative duo consisting of Marco Tiberio and Maria Ghetti, who both work at the crossroads of art direction, photography and exhibition design. ImmoRefugee, Defrost editions, 2016Part of the revenue from the sale of the book is donated to a Ravenna-based Italian association that takes care of unaccompanied underage refugees.https://defrost.cargocollective.com

Thibaut CUISSET The River Somme (création)

Exhibition curators: Camille Cuisset, Didier Mouchel and Fred Boucher

Between 2012 and 2013, at the invitation of Diaphane, as part of a residency, Thibaut Cuisset travelled along the River Somme from East to West to show the variety of natural and inhabited landscapes that succeed throughout the river’s course.

«I found myself on the banks of a river, a landscape subject that is dear to me, having already carried out work on the Loire and the Seine. I tried to recount this country through the presence of the river and ponds that structure this little known rural landscape. Naturally, I also looked at the architecture of the surrounding villages and how the work of the land shapes the landscape, how the farmer becomes landscaper.

At a time when we look at the planet in a global way, I like to focus my attention on these close spaces, because affirming the singularity of any land is also a way of questioning our world. «— Thibaut Cuisset - 2013

Thibaut Cuisset (1958-2017) is a documentary photographer. He was a resident at Villa Medici in Rome in 1992-1993, and at Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto in 1997. He benefited from the Photography Award of the Academy of Fine Arts in 2009 to carry out a work on the French countryside, and in 2015 he was granted a creative residency at the Fondation des Treilles (Var). Martin BECKA The Silent Line (création)

Although it no longer functions for the most part, the railway line of southern Gaspésie, between New Richmond and Gaspé, continues to be closely linked to the region, sometimes passing without any delimitation into the very heart of the towns and villages, crossing roads, spanning rivers and valleys. The impressive works of art seem small in the face of the magnificent landscapes of the estuaries. Modest railway stations, sometimes nestled in nature or on the edges of towns, are unfailingly indicated by signs that reflect their importance. Between village houses, by the waterside, or in the heart of the woods, this trail like an Ariadne’s thread weaves the fabric of the land between the inhabitants and their landscapes, Gaspesian landscapes whose immensity is fascinating for European eyes.Advancing alongside these rails that have fallen silent, I was astonished to come across many more people than I would have imagined. Walkers, sportsmen, residents of nearby houses, most of the Gaspesians I met wondered about the future of the line, the consequences for the future of the region, its rehabilitation or its abandonment...— Martin Becka

Martin Becka was invited for a creative residency in Gaspésie in 2017 as part of the partnership between Diaphane and the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Gaspésie, with the support of the Department of Cooperation and Cultural Action of the Consulate General of France in Quebec and the Council of Arts and Letters of Quebec.

Katia Kameli’s solo exhibition presented in the CRP/ gallery is to focus on the contribution of images to the writing of history, their political and cultural power. New photographic and film productions created in Algeria are to be presented, in particular investigating the decade of 1958 to 1968, featuring the recent video installation The Algerian Novel. This video installation, begun in 2016 and conceived in three chapters, significantly illuminates the complex relations of a nation with its history and the role of images in the construction of its national novel and its archetypes.

Katia Kameli’s approach, combining the fields of photography, film and installation, is based on research: historical and cultural facts inspire the multiple forms of her poetically artistic imagination. The rewriting of stories appears in her work. She highlights a global story of porous borders and reciprocal influences to open a reflexive path that generates a critical view of the world. Through her work, she renews the artistic approach of the iconographic archive, while incarnating historical and cultural subjects in narration and artistic reflection.

Born in 1973 in Clermont-Ferrand, Katia Kameli is a graduate of the National School of Fine Arts in Bourges and the Invisible College, and completed post-graduate studies at the School of Arts in Marseille. Her work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in France and abroad, including, in June 2018, one at the Gateway Contemporary Art Centre in Brest. She is also currently participating in the 13th Biennial of Contemporary African Art in Dakar.www.katiakameli.com

Arnaud CHAMBON Against ! (création)

I spent 5 months in the psychiatric hospital of Clermont, Oise. I made this choice because this other, this elsewhere that crystallizes psychiatric care has been part of my life for a long time, and this total immersion was a way for me to face something. As often when I arrive somewhere, I get angry at the words used in this place. The hospital was no exception to this rule. My anger was especially focussed on words relating to the classification of illnesses. Sometimes I used to use the same words and my anger redoubled. I chewed on this anger, closed my eyes and looked within myself to get a clearer view of what I was seeing.I experienced that kind of tearing feeling that is familiar to the photographer faced with the world, some kind of ecstasy. There were also many difficulties and missed photographs. But I was able to make photographs that matter to me. And every time, they left me feeling naked, lost, without knowing. I was not alone. About a hundred people, the youngest of whom was six, all tried to find the way to photographs that matter to themselves. And there was also for me the double happiness of witnessing the energy released by our movement, and of experiencing the photographs made by others.— Arnaud Chambon

In Bauhaus style, the school had accommodated up to 1,400 students. The building has been vacant since 2004. What surprised me was its size. It is a really big school in a small town. I wondered whether all the inhabitants of the town had studied there.Frankly, I find the Bauhaus style rather tedious now, but it represents history and a revolution in design that has had a strong influence in the world. With my photos, I tried to document the relationship between town and school. I looked at the traces the students have left, the marks that have been written. I scrutinised the construction of the building, both inside and out. It is a remnant of heritage, of history. It is also the collective memory of the inhabitants of Clermont.— Almond Chu

On July 10, 1938, the first stone of this new college was laid by Édouard Herriot, President of the Chamber of Deputies. The keys were handed over by the Municipality to the Principal on May 4, 1940. In his speech, the Prefect of Oise addressed the students, telling them it was up to them to finalise the efforts made by the community that had helped to build this school, «one of the most modern and beautiful in France». This «liner style» building respects the precepts of Bauhaus and Le Corbusier.

Almond Chu was invited on a creative residency in Clermont in 2016-2017 as part of a partnership between the Photaumnales festival, the French Alliance of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong International Festival.

Born in 1962 in Hong Kong, Almond Chu, graduated from the Tokyo School of Photography in 1986, and then opened his own studio in Hong Kong in 1993. He is represented by Yoko Uhoda Gallery in Liège (Belgium) and by La Galerie, Paris 1839 in Hong Kong.www.almondchu.com

Laetitia d’ABOVILLE So I go there on purpose to cut the nuts

End of 2014. Diagnosis.Neither he nor anyone wants to hear it.Since at first, it does not seem like an illness. At first, it just goes for old age.I knew I had to catch what had not already gone. But I knew that a documentary style would not be enough.I first followed him in his daily life to understand. To collect the clues. And then I wanted to mix my vision and reality.I laid out his everyday objects and photographed a bit of his disappearance. For the second part, I did not work on the composition of the image. This time it was me who went back to childhood.By playing hide-and-seek with him, I steal those moments where his time takes a break.— Laetitia d’Aboville

Born in 1983, Laetitia d’Aboville lives and works in Pantin. After studying communication, she started photography in 2009 and began doing commissioned work for institutional clients. She has built her artistic approach around everyone’s place within society, the group or the family. Breaking codes, reshaping moulds, getting out of the box, normality raises questions for her. www.laetitiadaboville.com

Sophie ZÉNONThe Landscape Man (Alexandre)In the Mirror of the Rice Fields (Maria)

The Landscape Man (Alexandre)Sophie Zénon evokes the arrival in the Vosges of her father, a child of Italian immigrants, in the 1930s. Plexiglas plates reproducing the portrait of her father’s identity card, a class photo and the one with his parents were placed in forests of the Bussang (Haut-Rhin) region, familiar to the child. They were then re-photographed on a mobile phone with tight framing on the face. The video made in situ explores the movement of the wind in the trees, the vibrations of water on the face and suggests a geographical aspect of bodies that, little by little, seem to come back to life. As in a palimpsest, trunks, leaves of trees and insects, intertwine with the lines of the face, in a game of transparencies, reflections, shadows and lights. The body becomes a place of passage, a universe interacting with space and the environment.

The Mirror of the Rice Fields (Maria),In the heart of the rice fields of Italian Piedmont, Sophie Zénon explores, in the shadow of her maternal grandmother, the figure of the «mondina», seasonal worker whose job was to transplant rice seedlings and cut weeds. It was a demanding task, carried out by women from all over Italy. In the spaces of the Tenuta della Colombara –a vast rice estate dating back to the 15th century, Sophie Zénon gave free rein to her imagination and, for the first time, staged fictional sketches tinged with fantasy. This work was created thanks to the Treilles Foundation Photographic Residency Award, which she won in 2015.

Born in Seine-Maritime in 1965, Sophie Zénon is represented by the Thessa Herold gallery in Paris, the Comptoirs Arlésiens in Arles and the Schilt gallery in the Netherlands. Pour vivre ici, Loco editions, 2018www.sophiezenon.com

Valerio VINCENZOBorderline, the Frontiers of Peace

I have in front of me the photograph at the origin of this project, the Bailleul customs post, immortalized by Henri Cartier-Bresson in 1969: a black and white image that belongs to the past. (...) So I decided to go looking for the Cartier-Bresson customs post. The caption of the photograph showing the name of the road, I had only to follow it. In 2007, I found the gatehouse, still in its place at the edge of the road, abandoned and in poor condition, with peeling paint. This customs post marked the beginning of a project which, over a period of ten years, led me to cross the length and breadth of Europe, from Portugal to Bulgaria, from Finland to Greece, zigzagging along almost twenty thousand kilometres of borders between the countries of the European Union or belonging to the Schengen area. These are countries that, having been at the heart of the deadliest war in the history of humanity, decided to build a peace project, Europe, for which they received a Nobel Prize in 2012.

(...) Back from my last trip along the borders, almost ten years after my first visit, I went back to see the customs post photographed by Henri Cartier-Bresson. It has changed. It is now brand new, restored by the local authorities. Preserved for future generations, it is witness to the path of peace travelled by Europe over the last six decades.— Valerio Vincenzo

Born in Naples (Italy) in 1973, Valerio Vincenzo lives and works in Paris, Milan and the Netherlands. Borderline, the Borders of Peace, received the 2013 Louise Weiss European Journalism Award, was nominated for the Canon Silver Camera Award in the Netherlands and shortlisted for the Alfred Fried Peace Photography Award in Austria in 2016.https://valeriovincenzo.com

The Condé Museum in Chantilly presents a remarkable collection of photographs from the second half of the 19th century, collected by the Duke of Aumale. This collection, comprising more than 1,900 pieces, includes works by famous artists belonging to the generation of «primitives» of photography, including the famous seascapes of Gustave Le Gray (1820-1884), the Braun brothers’ views of the Alps and Robert Howlett’s news photographs, the first amateur photographs and the beginnings of industrial photography.

Works by other artists related to the 1851 Heliographic Mission are featured in the Condé museum collection, notably three prints made around 1885 representing views of Paris by Édouard-Denis Baldus (1813-1882). Other views of Parisian monuments are the work of the Bisson brothers.

Passionate about mountains, the Duke of Aumale also owned fine views of Switzerland by Adolphe Braun (1812-1877) in Dornach. As a military man, he acquired the first major war reportage photos by Roger Fenton, sent to the siege of Sevastopol in 1854 by Queen Victoria.

The collection also includes family portraits, from the Orleans family to that of the Habsburgs, to whom the Duchess of Aumale was related through her mother, as well as photographs of paintings and works of art showing how the collector also made documentary use of this medium.

Les expositions dans les galeries des établissements scolaires

n Les Ateliers — Cité scolaire Manessier at Flixecourt Creative Residencies by Stéphanie Lacombe and Cédric Martigny

As part of two mission residences organised in 2017 and 2018 by the Departmental Council of the Somme, two photographers led photography workshops and created work inspired by the site.

Stéphanie Lacombe lived with young high school students in the heart of the boarding school, and her images transport us into the world of teenagers spending time together.

Cédric Martigny focused on the representation of those who work in the school, especially teachers. He set up scenes where each of the protagonists would put their body to work.
