Re-elected until 2020I was honoured at our second council meeting in September to be re-elected Mayor of Goulburn Mulwaree Council. Cr Peter Walker was elected Deputy Mayor and I look forward to working together with Pete over the coming two years until the 2020 elections.I would like to thank Cr Alfie Walker for his efforts and achievements over the past two years as Deputy Mayor, and I am sure he will continue to contribute strongly as a Councillor. Over the next two years we will be focusing on a number of infrastructure projects for Marulan including improvements at the Waste Management Centre, significant upgrades in Marulan’s water supply and a new Waste Water Augmentation Facility. $10.8 million has been included for this waste water facility over the coming four years.

Villages received further fundingI am pleased to advise of a successful application to the Stronger Country Communities Fund for $213,000 for Village Improvement projects. In Marulan this money will be put towards a new amenities block for Tony Onions Park which will be a huge improvement for the park. The new block will have male and female toilets as well as a new disabled toilet. In Towrang the funds will go towards landscaping behind the community hall and an electronic community notice board that will be able to be used for community events, emergency notices and potential environmental warnings.

Marulan Kite Festival I was unfortunately unable to attend the Marulan Kite Festival in late September due to another commitment with the West Goulburn Bushland Group however our newly elected Deputy Mayor Peter Walker went along and said it was a fantastic day.Marulan seems to go from strength to strength, and the cornerstone of a strong community is often its events which bring us together. The committee behind the Kite Festival and the wider Marulan community should be congratulated, and I hope to be able to attend in 2019!

Outreach Meetings approachingThe 2018 Community Outreach meetings are again approaching and the schedule for this year’s meetings is now finalised. These are a great chance for Councillors and Senior Staff to engage directly with the communities to hear what is going well and what isn’t.The Marulan Outreach Meeting will again be held in the Marulan Hall and this year will be on Thursday 25th October from 6:30pm. For our readers in Towrang your meeting will be held on Thursday 29th November from 6:30pm, while the Tallong meeting will be held on Thursday 6th December from 6:30pm.I look forward to seeing you all at these meetings later this year. Please also remember that if you have an issue that needs immediate attention to call us on 4823 4444 and our Customer Service team can help you out.

Towrang Village Discretionary Fund Working Party In September we called for expressions of interest for community members for this working party. In October we will be appointing four community members to this group who will work with Cr Andrew Banfield. Mayor Bob Kirk is the alternate Council representative if Cr Banfield is unavailable.

Pet of the WeekA quick note to remind you of our Companion Animal Facility located in Goulburn. Our staff do a lot of great work in rehoming animals that find their way into the pound and we are again encouraging individuals and families considering a new pet to first take a look at the CAF.Staff provide all the information on the animal and will help you when making your decision; and the feedback we get time and time again is that rehoming an animal is incredibly rewarding and the best decision people make!

A message from the MayorBob Kirk

Welcome to another edition of the Discover Marulan Newsletter; an initiative of the Marulan Region Chamber of Commerce. What an eventful month it’s been.

The Chamber congratulates all those who contributed to such a successful 2018 Marulan Kite Festival and is delighted to continue to support this great event as a subcommittee of the Chamber.

The Chamber Executive continues to lobby and advocate on behalf of the region and is pleased to report a couple of successful grant receipts: $100,000 obtained as part of the Saving Lives on Country Road Program to improve safety along the Hume Highway (1.9km to 3.2km south of Rampion Hills Road Marulan), and funds obtained under Round 2 of the Stronger Country Communities Fund to go towards rebuilding the toilet block in Tony Onions Park.

On that note, the Chamber honours and commemorates the late Jean Onions who passed away on 28 August 2018.

We congratulate Cr Bob Kirk who was re-elected Mayor and Cr Peter Walker who was elected Deputy Mayor. Both will serve until September 2020. The Chamber Executive will continue to meet with them as well as State and Commonwealth government representatives to ensure the Marulan region is recognised as a vital part of the Local Government Area with due funding, focus and resources assigned to it. We are also continuing to participate in the Marulan Community Committee to administer and distribute the Marulan Discretionary Fund and to make recommendations to Council on the priority of works within the Marulan area. This includes the prioritisation and oversight of 25 potential projects as set out in the Marulan Village Plan.

Finally, the Chamber continues to advocate and promote the region from a visitor and tourism perspective and has three significant projects on the go in this regard. First, we are working with Holcim, Council and RMS to deploy a town sign along the Hume. Second, work has commenced on producing a Marulan Region Visitors’ Guide. Third, a Marulan region tourism video is being produced to attract visitors to the town and to promote the treasures of our wonderful area.

Thank you.Dr Stephen James President, Marulan Region Chamber of Commerce Inc.

Jean Onions of Lockyersleigh Remembered

Jean Logan Campbell Onions passed away on 29th August 2018. Late of "Lockyersleigh"', Marulan.

Jean was the dearly loved wife of Tony (dec). Loved mother and mother-in-law of Matthew & Katherine and Susan. Loved grandmother of Van, Saxon and Angus. Aged 84 years. 'You Were Loved and Will be Missed'

Jean's family and friends attended her Funeral Service at 1.00pm, Thursday, 6th September 2018 at St. Saviour's Cathedral, Bourke Street, Goulburn.

Jean was born on December 29, 1933 to Arthur and Phyllis Ranken of Lockyersleigh.

She was born in Goulburn and was the youngest child of three children.

Her older brothers were William (Bill), who passed three years ago, and Andrew Ranken, who passed in the 1970s.

Jean lost her father when she was around four years old. He had served in World War One and was already 55 when Jean was born.

He died after fighting a fire for several days and in those days no one could drive to get him to a hospital in time.

Jean was schooled initially at home by a governess until she was old enough to attend Abbotsleigh in Sydney.

Jean's husband Tony was killed in 1989 in a rail crossing accident on Lockyersleigh. At this time her life with Tony was reaching that point of being very comfortable with particular involvement in many parts of the community such as Goulburn Races, Picnic and Polo Club, Goulburn Showground and the Diocese of St Saviour’s

At this time Lockyersleigh Stud was at its peak with six stallion and nearly 200 brood mares. They had also bought three other rural properties and ran nearly 80,000 acres

Jean involved herself in many community activities such as Goulburn Racing, the Liberal Party, Marulan Historic and Garden Society, Red Cross, Lady Belmore Club, Queens Club in Sydney, judge for showgirls, and many other community representations.

Gunlake Quarries is proud to advise that the improvements to Brayton Road, Red Hills Road and Ambrose Road and the Hume Highway acceleration lane, as required in our recent Consent, are now complete. In our commitment to the safety of the local community, our staff and drivers, these improvements were modelled off the recent improvements to both the Newell and Bruce Highways and are far superior to those that were required by our consent conditions.

Again, this year, Gunlake is also proud to be a major sponsor of the Marulan Kite Festival’s Art and Photography Exhibition. The Exhibition was officially opened on Saturday 8th September and ran each weekend until Kite Festival Day. We look forward to an ongoing constructive relationship with the local community and we will continue to be a strong contributor to local employment, local business and local events. We always encourage community feedback by visiting our website at: https://www.gunlake.com.au/contact/ or by calling Gunlake Quarry on 02 4841 1344.

Enjoying the opening of the Marulan Kite Festival’s Art and Photography Exhibition are L to R Dr Stephen James – President, Marulan Region Chamber of Commerce, Rob Randazzo – Judge of the Competition, Sharon Makin – Marulan Kite Festival Committee, Sharyn Ward, Rosemary Turner – President, Marulan Kite Festival Committee and Geoff Kettle.

Tallong Community Focus Group News.A meeting to form the first Progress Association at Barber’s Creek (later Tallong) was held on 17th February 1894 and a 13 member committee was elected which included such local luminaries as John Morrice of “Glenrock”, J. Kent, E. H. Badgery of “Caoura”, W. Hatter, Robert Kettle and H. J. Rumsey. A membership fee of 1s was set for the first half year and such was local pride in the Association that the Secretary was instructed to forward a report of the meeting to local and Sydney newspapers. The first meeting closed with three cheers for the new Association!Over the years various Progress Associations and other community groups have advocated strongly for the local area and have been responsible for many innovations and improvements. The latest incarnation of course is the Tallong Community Focus Group and the annual general meeting will be held on Monday 15th October 2018 at 7pm in the Memorial Hall. Membership fees are now due so support your local community group by filling out the membership slip on the bottom of the latest Tallong newsletter and place it (with $2.50 pp) in an envelope either in the TCFG mailbox or leave it at “The Midge”.Recently the TCFG and the Tallong Memorial Hall Trust applied for a grant through the ‘Stronger Country Communities Fund”, a NSW State Government Initiative. Tallong has been allocated $30,740 in funding for a complete electrical upgrade of the Memorial Hall, a new water tank and a pergola for the nature reserve.

The Big Apple.Visitors to Tallong will have noticed that due to the extremely windy conditions in the last couple of months some damage was caused to the fixtures and fittings of the Jim Watling Memorial Archway as well as the Big Apple itself. The Big Apple will soon be repaired and back in place with the structure reinforced. In addition to this, in the last week a group of volunteers have planted 100 Casuarina trees, kindly given to the local community after the “Glossies in the Mist” information session held in Tallong. The planting is to ensure the Black Cockatoos can continue to flourish in their natural habitat.

Community Car Boot Sale, Sausage Sizzle and Music Session. On Saturday 20th October at 2pm, Tony Rodwell will introduce Tallong to a music session. This is very popular at the Appin Pub and Tony and his friends from all over are coming to Tallong for a good old-fashioned jam session. All are welcome to join in (BYO instruments) or come along (BYO drinks and snacks) and enjoy an afternoon of free music at the Tallong Memorial Hall.

The day will start with a community car boot sale in the Memorial Park between 10am and 2pm. Register with Kerry at [email protected], make a gold coin donation to the TCFG and bring your new or used goods. A sausage sizzle will be available and all the proceeds will go towards the Community Christmas Party to be held on 2nd December.

MARULAN VOLUNTEERS

Who are we? We are a group of local residents trying to improve the appearance of our town.

Why do we do this? If our town looks appealing and cared for, this will attract visitors who will support our local businesses. It also makes it a better environment for us to live in as locals.

What do we do? Local council mows the town’s parks and some of its nature strips, but doesn’t have the resources to do much more than this. The volunteers supplement the work of council by regularly cutting the edges and whipper snipping the main street and parks. We also weed the gardens in the parks, and collect litter in areas around town. Other less frequent and one-off activities have included: refurbishing the grounds at the Brewer Centre; mulching the gardens in Meridian Park; repairing and painting roadside fences in the main street; and repairing and painting the fence & rotunda in Tony Onions Park.

How often do we do it? Generally speaking, the volunteers work for 2-3 hours on the first and third Monday (starting approximately 9.30am) of each month.

How can you help? If you have spare time and are available on Mondays, then we’d love you to join us. If this time isn’t suitable but you’d like to help, then please contact: David Blissett: 0400 119 016; Ellie Eggerking 0406 376 717; John Redhead: 0439 411 922

Volunteers receive a free cup of coffee on “Volunteer Mondays” at The Marulan General Store (facebook.com/marulangeneralstore).

The Creative Cook

Spiced Cauliflower TacosThese veggie tacos are packed full of flavour and are so easy to make. They’re a sure winner with the whole family. If you don’t like any of the spices we’ve listed, or if don’t have it in your kitchen, simply omit it. It’ll still be super yum!

Ingredients:1 head cauliflower1 tsp chili powder1 tsp smoked paprika1 tsp cumin1 tsp onion powder1 tsp garlic powderwarmed tortillas tomato salsa mix (chopped tomato, onions, lemon, olive oil)coriander, chopped lettuce, red cabbagesliced avocadofresh lime (or lemon)mayo

Directions:1. Preheat oven to 220 and line a tray with baking paper.2. While the oven is heating, combine the spice mix in

a small bowl and chop the cauliflower into bite sized florets. Place them into a bowl and lightly coat with oil.

3. Sprinkle the spice mix overtop the cauliflower and toss to coat each floret evenly with the spices.

4. Spread the spiced cauliflower onto the lined baking sheet and bake for about 25 minutes.

5. While the cauliflower is baking, prep the taco fillings and the salsa mix (simply chop the tomatoes, onion and drizzle with lemon and olive oil and a bit of salt and pepper).

6. Once the cauliflower is ready, simply the fill the warmed tortilla, add a squeeze of fresh lime and then drizzle with mayo. So easy and delicious!

October continues last month’s tasks of pruning, watering and feeding. Prune spring flowering shrubs and trees straight after flowering to direct their growth into next seasons branches. Shorten over long canes of May and Buddleia by at least a third. Shear Azaleas into a compact dome shape. Prune Hibiscus, taking last seasons growth to 15 cm. Feed shrubs with a complete fertiliser.

In the vegie garden, late frosts may kill off tender species such as tomatoes. Plant frost tender varieties at the end off the month. The ground is usually warmer then which encourages growth. Construct a simple frame using polythene or shade cloth to cover plants at night. Hill soil around planted potatoes. This prevents the tubers getting exposed to the sun and turning green. Feed with fertiliser every three weeks as they are heavy feeders.

In the flower garden, apply moisture holding mulch, to garden beds. It is better to give plants a good soaking once a week than a quick sprinkle which encourages surface roots that burn off easily. Remove spent flowers from roses and other flowering plants. Fertilise fruit trees, watering well before and after the application. Hardy bedding plants such as pansies, snapdragons and petunia can be put in. Sow seeds of frost tender summer annuals in trays or sheltered seed beds to avoid frost damage.

It is probably a good time to check your garden tools. Sharpen and clean any cutting tools. Check for the need to replace any. Your watering system should be looked at for any blockages or breaks. Tools can be cleaned then wiped down with an oily rag, then stored.
