Memorial Day Schedule

On Monday, May 27th, we observe Memorial Day. St. Agnes will offer Mass at 8:10am and 12:10pm. The church will close after the 12:10pm Mass and there will be no Confessions that day. The rectory office and the bookstore will also be closed. We will resume our schedule on Tuesday.

You are cordially invited to a Solemn Mass for the

Feast of Saint Josemaria Escriva, Founder of Opus Dei

Wednesday, June 26th, 2019 at 7:00pm

at St. Patrick’s Cathedral (Fifth Ave at 50th Street)

Principal Celebrant,

Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop of Brooklyn

Confessions will be starting at 6:15pm.

Dear Friends and Parishioners, Thank you for your generous contributions during Easter Week! We deeply appreciate every gift. We are working hard to improve St. Agnes and still have major projects ahead of us. They include: Sound system repairs in the

church $45,000 Elevator upgrade (required by the City of NY)

$50,000 Our beautiful pipe organ needs $46,000 in repairs,

including parts We’re currently assessing the heat/AC units. A

total replacement, which is ideal, is too expensive. However, regular repairs and maintenance add up to thousands of dollars every year. We want the faithful to always have a comfortable place to pray. Whatever the outcome, this project will be a financial investment that we will have to address and we’ll need your support.

St. Agnes is like a large home, with many things that need attention and cannot be neglected. We rely on Mass collections for our monthly expenses, but run at a deficit every month. This is why we ask for extra help with large projects though second collections. Please know that all expenses are carefully prioritized so that St. Agnes can be a clean, safe, enjoyable space. As Ascension Thursday and Pentecost (the end of the Easter Season) approach, please pray to St. Agnes, as well as our Blessed Mother, asking their interces-sion for our church as we strive to work through these financial challenges. Yours in Christ, Fr. Michael

Pope says Blessed Guadalupe Ortiz Inspires “Normal” Holiness

The Catholic Church has a new Blessed: the Spanish chemist and researcher Guadalupe Ortiz de Landázuri (1916-1975). A member of Opus Dei, Blessed Ortiz de Landázuri was beatified in a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Becciu, prefect of the Congregation of the Causes of the Saints, held in Madrid on May 18th, 2019. Following the solemn rite of beatifi-cation, the image of the new blessed was unveiled and her relics brought to the altar, carried by both her relatives and also relatives of the man reportedly cured through her intercession, Antonio Sedano. Pope Francis wanted to unite himself to the "joy and thanksgiving" for the beatification of Guadalupe Ortiz. In a letter addressed to the Prelate of Opus Dei, the Holy Father says Guadalupe Ortiz de Landázuri, "put her many human and spiritual qualities at the service of others, helping in a particular way other women and their families in need of education and development." The Pontiff also noted that Guadalupe "did all this not with a proselytizing attitude but simply through her prayer and witness...with the joy that came from knowing she was a daughter of God, as she had learned from Saint Josemaria himself.” The new Blessed, the Holy Father says, is a "witness of holiness lived out in the ordinary circumstances of her Christian life." The example of her life serves as encouragement to always aspire "to this holiness of ‘normality’, which burns within our hearts with the fire of Christ's love, and which the world and the Church are so in need of today.” Holiness, the Pontiff said, means, “opening one’s heart to God" and "going out of ourselves so as to meet others where Jesus awaits us, to bring them a word of encouragement, a helping hand, a look of tenderness and consolation." Blessed Guadalupe Ortiz de Landázuri was born in Madrid on December, 12th, 1916. She studied chemistry and was one of few women to study a scientific field at that time (1933). In Madrid, she dedicated herself to teaching and research, eventually completing a doctorate, all the while carrying out an intense professional and evangelizing activity. In other stag-es of her life, she lived in Mexico and Rome. Guadalupe Ortiz is the first lay person of Opus Dei to be beatified and collabo-rated directly with Opus Dei’s founder, Saint Josemaria. " Her contagious cheerfulness, her for titude in the face of adversity, her Christian optimism in difficult circumstances, and her self-giving to others,” are some of the characteristics mentioned by the decree promulgated by the Congregation of the Causes of Saints. The text of the decree also reflects how Guadalupe lived the virtues to a heroic degree, and "surrendered herself completely and joyfully to God and to the service of his Church, and intensely experienced divine love.” Source: https://opusdei.org/en-us/article/beatification-guadalupe-ortiz-landazuri-opus-dei-press-release/.
