Family,

I would like to take this last opportunity to thank the GUSD and its employees for welcoming me into the family when I arrived eight years ago, wet behind the years. I value family above all else and appreciate how everyone made me feel welcome from the get-go. The greatest asset GUSD has is its people. You all work so very hard for the kids of Glendale, offering the students one of the best educations in the state! Again, I thank you for making me part of the family.

The eight years have flown by fast. There have been a lot that has happened in that time span, most of it great, but like life in general, there have been some tough times. That is where the district showed its grit, during the tough times. Everyone collectively dug down deeper, gave a little bit more, and pulled together closer, as families do in trying times. For that, I am truly grateful to have been your leader.

In closing, I would like to thank all of you one last time and wish you the very best in your future endeavors. Personally, I would like to thank the Board of Education for this great opportunity and know that they will select someone special who will take you into the future.

Have a great summer!

Two groundbreaking and concrete poured in GlendaleFASO and Planning & Development have had a very busy year! Staff has actively been working on improving Glendale schools and doing their part in preparing students for their future. The new College View School is near completion and has a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled on August 4 at 1 P.M. The new 16-classroom building at Franklin Elementary began construction in March 2015 and is anticipated to be complete by January 2016. The Overcrowding Relief Grant (ORG) projects, which are 50% state funded, are underway at Balboa and R.D. White Elementary Schools. Next school year, Planning will be busy with the ORG projects at Hoover and Glendale High Schools, and Verdugo, Muir, Fremont, Jefferson, La Crescenta and Lincoln Elementary Schools. Over the next 18 months, the Measure S team will be starting almost $80 million in new construction projects.

On Tuesday morning, May 5, representatives of the French Consulate went to Franklin to visit classrooms and deliver French books. Bénédicte de Montlaur, Cultural Counsellor of the French embassy’s mission for culture and education from New York, Adelaïde Barbier, Cultural Attachee from Los Angeles and Antonia Rigaud, Deputy Cultural Attachee of Los Angeles, enjoyed visiting the French immersion classes. Dr. Kelly King and Sherry Kully rep-resented the district and answered many questions during the visit. Principal Vickie Atikian Aviles and teacher special-ist Ana Jones wel-comed all and were very grateful for the generous donation of French books.

On May 17, 13 Cerritos students participated in the Girls on the Run 5K. Several staff members and parents joined them as running buddies in order to motivate the girls to the finish line. Principal Perla Chavez-Fritz said, “We are very proud of the students’ achievement and determination.”

On May 1, students from Early Bird Preschool, EEELP Spanish Immersion Preschool, College View School, Jewel City and FACTS all enjoyed the annual jam session with Masanga. Headed by Rick Alviso, Masanga has performed for College View annually since 2009. It is one of their favor-ite events. Students not only enjoy the music and dancing, but they join in playing with drums and other percus-sion instruments and have a chance to try playing the marimbas also.

One hundred seventy three students from 11 elementary schools and three middle schools competed in the 7th Annual GUSD Elementary Robotics Tournament at the Ron Grace Auditorium at Roosevelt Middle School on May 9.

Joining the 4th, 5th, and 6th graders were an additional 60 student volunteers from Roosevelt Middle School, Clark Magnet High, Crescenta Valley High, and Glendale High. These volun-teers provided almost all of the support staff necessary for the event.

After months of working to solve 10 robotic challenges, 26 teams met to see who had the best solutions.

In the end, two teams stood out from the crowd, Fremont 1 and Mountain Avenue 1. Both schools managed to create the most effective robotic and

Lincoln Elementary School has been the home of the Lincoln 500 since 1980. Students demonstrate “Teamwork” during this annual spring event as student pit crews and drivers work together to get their bike to the finish line with the support of all their fans – all this to earn the coveted Lincoln 500 trophy for their upper grade class sponsor!

State recognizes GUSD schools with Gold Ribbon AwardThe California Department of Education recognized eight GUSD schools as 2015 California Gold Ribbon School. They are: Rosemont, Roosevelt, Toll and Wilson Middle Schools and Clark Magnet, Crescenta Valley, Glendale and Hoover High Schools.

The Gold Ribbon Schools Award was created to honor schools in place of the California Distinguished Schools Program, which is on hiatus while California creates new assess-ment and accountability systems. This award recognizes California schools that have made gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education. These include the California Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics, California English Language Development Standards, and Next Generation Science Standards.

while producing a similar intensity, color, and quality of light to their incandes-cent counterparts. The LED bulbs produce only a minimal amount of heat, have a rated lifespan of 25,000 hours, and carry a 10-year replacement warranty.

The Cree bulbs are the highest quality offered on the market, and are identical to those sold at Home Depot. Since September 2014, Clark’s team has sold over 500 bulbs, leading to a total reduction in energy consumption of over 25 Kilowatts. For more information or to purchase, visit http://shop.team696.org

And because the Woodie Flowers award and the light bulb fundraising campaign wasn’t enough, the unstoppable David Black presented a total of $15,000 in schol-arships to nine students at the Clark Magner Senior Awards night on May 21.

For the past four years, the school has worked tirelessly to improve and grow its advanced engineering and manufacturing program, which includes a state-of-the art lab. By partnering with the Gene Haas Foundation, Clark was able to award nine scholarships to these very deserving students who are pursuing further studies in machinist-based training and engineering programs.

On May 16, Latina students from Roosevelt Middle School attended the Adelante Mujer Latina conference. The district supports this yearly conference by paying for all expenses so girls and their moms, mentors, teachers, counselors, and staff are able to attend.

The all day event includes college, career, and personal development workshops with inspiring speakers, all to encourage Latinas to finish their education, pursue non-traditional career paths and establish a network of supportive profession-als.“ It was all worthwhile, we had a total of 41 attendees. We are super proud of our young ladies for being the best group to date. Go Roosevelt!” reported Roosevelt Counselor Olga Iraheta.

On May 13, 2015, Glendale Community College held its very first Career Fair at Wilson Middle School. Wilson stu-dents gathered at lunch to experience a variety of booths pertaining to a vast array of careers. Students were pre-sented with information about careers such as marine biology, nursing, fire academy, media art, and robotics.

As students began to explore the booths, they were able to speak to individuals that were present from each career path. The students were pro-vided a unique opportunity to experi-ence firsthand some of the gadgets and tools that are used in those careers that were represented that day.

Dr. Narineh Makijan, a counselor at Wilson Middle School, organized this educational event and hopes that this will become a tradition at Wilson.
