In this year. I have received a couple of requests to organize events in the evening, but I think I will limit myself
to pulling together a Fly-out for dinner on Thursday evening.
The entire Arlington Fly-In and Airshow event is on a shortened schedule this year, commencing on Thursday
and ending on Saturday afternoon. This shouldn't affect most of us Canardians.
Although we can fly out to various islands for dinner, we would be unable to get a large room or table that can
handle the large group that have historically joined our Thursday evening dinner fly-outs.
I am willing to follow the desires of the group: if you plan to attend Arlington, and you want to fly out for
Dinner on Thursday evening, would you rather just go in smaller groups to various Islands, or en masse to
Bremerton? Total flight time is about the same either way: 20 minutes, and we're back well before sunset.
Let me know and I will arrange Bremerton, if that's what the group wants.

AUGUST 2013: Aug 10, 2013 KEIK ERIE COLORADO Airport Survival flyin:
I hope things are well for you and your canard. I wanted to reach out and let you know about an event I am
involved with putting together.
Our little airport, Erie Municipal Airport (KEIK) (4700’ long, 5100 elevation), was built in the late
60s/early70s, and at the time was well away from the urban sprawl of Denver. Over the years the northwest
suburbs have expanded dramatically, and our airport is now nearly surrounded by modern housing
developments complete with well organized HOAs. Though the airport predates nearly all the adjacent
developments there seems to be some annoyance coming from the surrounding community and to some degree
local government. So, in a diplomatic move of sorts some of the pilots (and a few non pilots) at the airport have
decided that an AirFair (big open house) is in order. The real intent of the event is to educate the surrounding
community about the economic and recreational good created by this airport.
I am providing one of my stages and concert sound systems for the event. We are in the process of booking
some really good local bands, a kids area (clowns, face painting etc.) and food vendors. Of course we are
seeking out cool and unique airplanes for the show. I can’t imaging a more interesting and cool looking
airplane than the ones we enjoy. So, on behalf of the 2013 Erie Airfair I am officially rolling out the welcome
mat to all homebuilts especially ones with canards. We are exploring the possibility of discounted fuel but for
the time being it is just an invitation for a good time and good music.
Aug 16-18 2013 Independence, OR Flyn (7S5) While not a specifically "canard" event, EAA 292 is hosting the
"Independence Flyin with Van's Homecoming" on August 16-18 at the
Independence State Airport, 7S5, just west of Salem Oregon.
For many years, EAA 292 has been the host of Van's Homecoming. Last year we opened this
event to other types of airplanes. David Ullman, the Chapter President flies a Velocity
SE-FX, Joe Dubner is well known in the NW for his pristine Long EZ, and others in the
club are working on an SQ2000 and three Speed Canards. We are encouraging other, non-
spam-can-backward planes to join us for this event. If you are not familiar with the
facility, 7S5 hosts a 3100 ft runway with taxiways leading to over 200 homes in the
airpark. The hangars at these homes are filled with a wide range of airplanes, many on
display at the Flyin. All the canards mentioned above are at the airpark. EAA 292 has
over 180 members and in the past they built 14 Neuports (the Noon Patrol). Currently
five members are building full scale DH-2 replicas in our hangar. Love to see more
canards. I will send an update next month about activities associated with the event.
Brochure available.

Sat: Visit the projects and hangar talk Wine tasting at a local vineyard, time to be announced
Van's Homecoming banquet, Registration Req'd
Sun: Breakfast at the Starduster Cafe on the field Farewell and Departure
That's the official blurb as I received it, but I'll add the following myself. The fly-in is held at Independence Airpark, a
residential development adjacent to a state-owned 3000-foot runway (7S5) near sea level. There are a dozen different
places that are EZ to fly to within 5 - 30 minutes, two of which (S45 and ONP) are near the beach.
The residents open up their homes and hangars so lodging and hangaring will be a non-expense for anyone who plans
ahead and makes a reservation. In the past, this fly-in has traditionally been populated by RVs but this year we're striving
for a good turnout of canards and others. There will still be a large RV contingent (and Van Himself will be here) but I
know for a fact there'll be some Long-EZs and some Lancairs, and I suspect there'll be some biplanes, classics, and
others. I have the only EZ on the field and would like to help host all canard fliers who reserve early enough (while I still
have room).
EAA 292 has hosted Van Homecoming for the past four years. This year we are making it the Independence Fly-in (7S5)
and including Vans Homecoming as part of a bigger event. As President of EAA 292 I want to encourage canards to
show up. This will be Aug ? More as detail develop. You can make the above public. The only other canard at 7S5
is Joe Dubner. Let's see who shows up at this general flyin. Names and contact info for other backward flyers in the NW
is appreciated. Dennis Fuhrman [email protected] (Backup: David Ullman N-444DX Velocity EAA 292

guests with local residents. Also, there is a motel in Monmoth on 99W that is 3 miles from the air park. We will also have
tie-down camp-sites adjacent to the festivities.

Flyin HISTORY:
AZ bunch fly to Ryan Airport: “Brian Scott, Richard Rivet, Don Berlin and Marc Borom all
made the trip to Ryan Saturday morning. Clear skies, calm winds and warm temperatures
prevailed. Thanks to Don for the photos.”
The AZ Bunch then flew to Marana, AZ: Reuland reports: “The Skyrider café welcomed five EZs one RV-6 and two Zodiacs to their
famous breakfast gathering in the Tucson area.
Flying their EZs were Richard Rivet, Marc Borom, Richard Reuland, J.D. Walker, and Don
Berlin, while Jim Timm and Brian Briggerman flew in their nice Zodiacs. Dale Willey also
flew in his pretty blue and white RV-6. Another group of RV fliers from Falcon field,
settled in at an adjoining table. It was nice to see a few high wispy clouds providing a
little morning shade, and the air was smooth with a nice returning tailwind of 22 Kts at
6500 ft.”
Ladies' Canard blouses/shirts: Had one member ask if I could get women's shirts
and I've never touched base on the topic - I could try to make a special order for
ladies canard shirts, if Beagle gets enough interest. [email protected] if
interested - color and size…ladies size.
Columbia
June 28-30, 2013
It was hot but we had a great turnout for the Columbia Event, great meals locally and at the campground
conference room. Much credit to the organizers, led by Tim and Judy Fisher. The presentations by Cookie
Skovbjerg on his Alaska flying, Mike Melvill on the round the world trip and Marc Zeitlin on his inspection of
some problem canards, with advice on fixing problems…kept the whole crew interested. Dinner was superb
and it seems that the heat absorbed a lot of the alcohol – the evening ended quietly with a wonderful Battle of
Britain program done by Ewen McGregor and his brother – who went through the same quick training as the
British Pilots who were thrown into the battle…
Eric Cobb took photos before he and Charlie Plumb landed
The only odd thing was Brian Amendala lifting off and returning to get his
nose wheel to retract – the shortest fix at any air show I’ve ever seen.

Likely a dozen others I missed – in that regard, as an old fellow with a
bad memory and no computer augmentation, Beagle found Columbia almost
confusing – it didn’t help that I attended Friday, then flew to Van Nuys
and brought back another Grand-nephew on Saturday. I kept meeting people
who checked in with me and then I remembered who they were, slowly over
the day, the name tags didn’t help with a memory like mine; I couldn’t
really get a focused discussion with anyone except when we went to eat…,
which meant I really had adequate time with about 7 people. I felt I was
missing dozens of people and I apologize I couldn’t stop and spend time
with everyone who wanted to talk. I left out my shirts and hats for sale
– hoping those who wanted them would self-help… I was so glad to walk
around twice totting up the tail numbers – an old habit of mine. I have
learned that when someone tells me something that requires me to do
something, I almost always say – please send me an e-mail so I can
remember this discussion and help out…
AZ Bunch with hot alternate to Columbia: Four Ezs, each owned by Marc Borom, Rick Reuland, Richard Rivet and Don Berlin had their temperature limits
tested during the brief flight to Casa Grande this morning.
Jim Timm and Brian Briggerman flew in their colorful Zodiacs while Bill Maxey joined us
in his nice C-182 from Scottsdale. Dave McNeil also joined us in his nicely equipped RV-
10. This was a total of 8 planes braving early morning in flight temperatures of
approximately 98 F. Falcon field surface temperature was 87.8 F at 6:00 AM, but most of
us saw an inversion to 98F at 3500 ft. My oil temperature peaked at 230F with a CHT of
425 F on #4 cylinder. Many thanks to the EAA group at Casa Grande who sponsor this early
morning event at an uncomfortable time of year.
IFR FLYERS?:
Beagle received a mailing from "The Pitot Static Guys LLC" based at Yuca Valley
(free to aircraft locate in Southern California) offering FA 91.411 & 91.413
Certifications - standard static and transponder $225, Second Altimeter with one
static system and transponder $300, VFR only Mode C Transponder checks $95
(Lots of other flat rate prices.) Randy 760-288-1119
Requests to Individual Members: Beagle gets lots of requests for hangarmates, primarily in California – so if you are getting ready to move, or need a half hangar – at half hangar rates, please get in touch. Recent request was for hangermate at Livermore, CA. contact [email protected]
In Memorium: A very few old timers will remember Frank Tifft - brother of
the famous B&T Prop developer Bruce Tifft.
Builder’s Help Desk:
Nate Mullins, in TN, has developed a whole new canopy hinge system, it is hinged at the turtle deck, much like
one of the EZ Jets developed in Tennessee. He sent me video I haven’t been able to figure out how to attach.
He provided these details:
“The Canopy is by Todd's Canopy's and measures 74x22x15 when ordering from Todd.
Compared to the stock plans canopy, visibility is greatly improved for both pilot and passenger.
The canopy uses the same BID/UNI Layup schedule as the plans recommend but all in Carbon Fiber
The total weight of the canopy with hardware sits at 16.2 lbs.
The canopy opens to 40 degrees and will open by itself after being opened 15 degrees
Both gas springs are all SS and have 45lbs of pressure each. (could probably have less)
The Hinges are made of Polished 316 SS.
The canopy latches are installed similar to the Berkut. www.mykitlog.com/jenatepilot
Such great whimsy – but as I told Nate. “Bigger version of the Berkut approach, but is there a close to latched
place you can use when taxiing? It gets bloody hot under the down canopy...and my back canopy is so unstable
that I keep it latched down with the front, more stable canopy, open for taxiing. (The back seater in the Berkut
only gets hot when I’m stopped too long with just the front canopy open.) Warning, it is much more likely to
hit things in the hangar spaces. It looks like it will clear the prop when you forget to latch it on take off as about
5 people have now done on Berkut... 3 new generation Berkut props survived to bring the pilots to a safe
landing - but the old wood ones wouldn't have. And virtually all new generation carbon covered props were
thrown away.” (Beagle asked, the white pipe out the side is part of vent system.)
Brake lines:
Nate also suggested getting your brake lines fabricated and tested by these people: “ Www.anplumbing.com made
and tested my lines for no extra charge and they really knew what they were talking about over the phone. No
wonder the army drones use their brake lines.” “I got the -3 braided Teflon w SS ends.” The Berkut approach
is to use hard Stainless lines from wheel to top of gear leg, some flexible there to the aircraft and hard
Stainless lines from there to the nose mounted masters – of course with gear that comes up, the hinge
point is more of a challenge. We got our stainless tube and fittings from a Long Beach aircraft and hot
rod supplier: Deerings hoses and hardware:3300 Cherry, Long Beach 562-595-1668 [email protected]
Where are the Wing Hard Parts Described?:
One of the guys told me that there was no description of the hard parts anywhere in building the wings,
Chapter 19. After some fumbling around Beagle suggested that the parts mirror those on the Spar and
he should look in the Spar plans for the parts, his response: “I found the LWA2 & LWA3 on page 14-7 in
the center spar section. In the text, it does state to make two sets to be used in Chapter 19 (wing assembly). That
is why in that chapter, it doesn't describe them.”
Better Wing Jigging?:
Steven James, who at Eureka, laser cuts the foam for wings is developing a wing jigging system he thinks will
be much more accurate than the plans jig system – anyway, watch this space…
Had a Long EZ builder ask a question – he saw my shirt on a video “I’m building a Long EZ” and asked how he could get one. I have no idea where it came from 30 years ago – but I suggested he send a photo of his project to this guy and ask him to put words above the photo: T-Time Custom Shirt Printing
11 West Center Street
Kanab, Utah 84741
(435)644-8456
Thanks to Patti Pitzer who kept the address for us.
“Actually you were gracious to give me a spirit ride in your Berkut out of Cable [Airport] a few months ago.
I've been lurking canard aviators yahoo group since the 90's but I just read the digests. I've heard of the
squadrons but not sure what they are or were. I know when I start building I'm instructed to get some CSA
newsletters. Do you have a link for info on the club or is it newsletter based? Also on the SoCal Yahoo group? I
thought I might have joined that I think that is where I introduced myself initially.”
Reuland pointed out ":
…photo [shows what] was likely the cause of power (rpm) fluctuations on N433EZ during the last few flights. Lead shedding likely happened during the aborted takeoff run. The plug was cleaned and labeled suspect and a different plug installed.” [Beagle had about the only O-235 powered Long EZ at Santa Monica. For some reason that engine, particularly, leaded up – Beagle was advised to lean from startup to shutdown, skip going full rich anywhere. That improved lead situation – but it got much better with a Klaus ignition on the bottom plugs (against his advice to put the electronic ignition on the top).]
Beagle took his iPad and remotely located and plugged in Bad Elf GPS Pro unit to Las Vegas. He parked outdoors (read
air temp 115 degrees) and left the Bad Elf in the plane with the rest of his avionics – it likely remained on – likely stayed
on. However, for the trip back, it would not transmit by Bluetooth. Oddly enough the Bad Elf Director of Customer Service
worked well into the night trying to get the system working again remotely through [email protected]. (A problem
came up with the original 1” square Bad Elf device and he remedied it with a free replacement in January after all efforts
to trouble shoot – the unit had failed.) I was impressed with his working at 10 pm California time…mine was updated to
edition 2.0.31 in March. He told me: “ The unit was designed to shut itself down under high temperatures ... but did it
poorly and at lower than expected temps. This has been resolved as of 2.0.41, I think we just need to get you updated to
fix what you saw.” (Unfortunately the unit could not connect by Bluetooth to update that edit). After 3 e-mails
troubleshooting, pushing buttons in odd orders he declared they’d replace it – they send a new one out for $0 and trust
you to mail back the bad one in the return envelope.
Key Maintenance Tip: Where do the Brock Engine Mount’s crack – Beagle’s never seen the famous cracked
engine mounts before but Bill Oertel says he’s seen about 7 of them over the years. He says it is inevitably the top leg from the fire wall to the top right engine mount ring, just before the ring. If left a while, the other rings will separate from the legs – he saw one recently with only one whole leg/ring connection left. When he gets them re-welded, he also adds a new tube from the top legs to the horizontal top tube (between top rings).
Beagle’s response:
The Clubs:
Indeed, new guys are a little frustrated trying to decipher the many different canard organizations – you
are now a member of Canard Squadron III – it is a kind of follow on to Squadron I, which met at Chino
and then at Bracket Airport and had wonderful newsletters for about 8 years, and our Squadron II
started at Santa Monica to take the overflow when Squadron I limited itself to 100 Long EZ builders.
Squadron II ran for about 8 years and became EAA Chapter 11 which is still going at Santa Monica,
mostly with canard people. Its venue was monthly lectures by experts on all manner of things – we kept
a few videos of those lectures, so I have a video bibliography which can be sent out on disk from video
librarian Bill Cloninger. There were active clubs in San Diego for Varieze, there was the very nice
IVCHC which mailed out imoeographd letters from the members, EZ Flyers of Florida, the DUCKS of
Ohio, less formal clubs in Northern California, Seattle, the North East, and I might be missing them.
There was a Defiant builders club and Velocity ran a Velocity newsletter for a while and there is a new
club of Velocity guys, by e-mail. The most famous is Central States, see documents below.
Documents:
We had a good long series of official Rutan Aircraft Factory (RAF) newsletters called Canard Pusher,
edited mostly by Mike Melvill as changes came from Burt or clarification based on phone advice given;
those items were put into a chapter by chapter notebook created by Stet Eliott that cost me $90 to Xerox
10 years ago. Through the good efforts of one of our members, that index was scanned and is on line
under EZ.Org. It doesn’t have sketches. Most people know that RAF newsletters are very interesting to
read, RAF sold old newsletters for $1 each – and when RAF closed down, they gave me the boxes of old
newsletters, which I can access for a reasonable effort. They had posters, photographs and I retain
boxes of those too. RAF also commissioned a CD-ROM with all the newsletters – which sold for
something like $300. They come up on the web from time to time. They don’t have the templates for
building the Long EZ, but most of the rest of the information.
Squadron I’s newsletters were unofficial and well edited. I kept a library of the Squadron I Newsletters –
and put into my paper library individual articles of interest, from descriptions of flights to engineering
articles about changing from O-235 to O-320, better engine cooling, etc.
During that 5 years at Santa Monica, building my Long EZ, I retained a chapter by chapter list of all the
advice I got on building my Long EZ, often given just after I’d finished a chapter – advice on how I could
have done it easier or better… frustrating, but I’m anal so I kept notes called “Unblessed Hints”, and
built a paper library which I’m slowly converting to digital documents as I get requests for things from
builders – my library of Canard related materials take about 5’ of drawer space – I have a chapter order
bibliography for builders to access that library. I get few requests for documents every month. The
library contains Squadron I materials, Central States materials and a whole lot of random stuff. Many
of the Squadron I and Unblessed Hints found their way into the Central States newsletters, usual by
people seeing things done in the field. Central States was a newsletter mailed from Iowa and taken over a
long time ago by Terry Schubert in Ohio – it is a wonderful quarterly newsletter and I’ve tried to include
interesting articles in my library. Terry’s a member of Squadron III and I’m a long term member of
Central States.
Canard Squadron III started off with SoCal news that went out every 10 days but has settled down to
about once a month; and with membership getting near to 800 members so the mailing has grown to
bigger newsletters with help of a trio of computer guys who have and do help make it look better than I
can – I’ve started an index, working backwards, but it will be a while before that becomes full enough to
help a builder out. One of our members kept the e-mails from near the beginning. I have been offering
Central States and Canard Squadron III patches, Long EZ, Cozy and Varieze hats, formation of 3 golf
shirts and a few other things to members…
Internet groups:
I can’t possibly list all the Internet advice locations – where anyone, from a neophyte to a highly
respected builder can outline his opinion on plans changes. The larger ones were:
EZ.Org (which grew out of the San Diego Varieze builders club)
The Canard Forum
Cozy Builders
Canard Aviators
AZ Bunch – guys who meet every Saturday morning for breakfast in Arizona
NorCal Yahoo Group for places to fly
SoCal Yahoo Group for places to fly
Washington Group
Defiant guys had a paper newsletter and have moved to an internet group.
Velocity started a very pretty newsletter and a new group is starting an internet group too.
Unfortunately, it is hard to find a particular topic in most of those forums – it is catch as catch can, or ask
a question and hope that the advice given includes good advice.
I’d love to hear of any others out there…
What the flyers are doing: ZWIJACZ
Mike Zwijacz “Z-Man”, South Tahoe, CA: “I’ve decided to keep my plane flying until after Arlington. Then
I’m going to be down for a long time. With the high school plays and dance over, I’ll be able to do a little
flying . Went down to LA and built some new cowls (Beagle: EJ Johnson has 3rd
edition Ronneberg third
edition cowl molds and helps you build them) to be installed next year, when I prepare the airframe for new
finish and paint.”
David Karlsburg, Hawthorne, CA: “…Paul[Storaasli], and I have been flying N526J quite regularly. I am going to try and make it to Columbia if my schedule allows, but I'm
still not sure yet. Also I'd love to be part of a Mexico fly in, so keep me posted about
that this fall. I was at Guerro Negro a while ago and the runway is in good shape and is
a fun place to visit but probably only during whale watching season. Before Oshkosh, I
am planning on flying the long ez to Maine then stopping at Oshkosh on the way back…”
Steve James, in New Mexico now and who makes wing and canard foam with CNC machine: “I
got rid of my Long-EZ/Varieze project and have started a Cozy IV from scratch. The wings
are structurally complete but I moved to New Mexico and the project has been on hold for
the past year. In that time I've built a CNC router and I intend to use it to make lots
of other parts for the EZ community. I've also developed a whole new wing jigging system
but so far I've only built 1 prototype. I used it to make my wings and it worked great. I
hope to get the production model complete in the near future. Right now I'm debating
between completing my Cozy or getting a fuselage and other parts from Tony [Malfa] and
starting over. Either way I'm strongly considering using his [retract] gear system.”
William Norton, California City, had to rebuild his engine before doing his 40 hour fly
off: 6/16: “Just got all the engine parts back from the land of tornados. Will probably
be a couple of weeks getting the firewall aft all back together again.”
Rick “Bluesman” Finney sent in a comment about Canard Squadron member, Valery and Robert Harris’ progress on the Jet powered EZs (The Cozy jet shown is flown by another of our members out west.)
“The jets are progressing nicely....Check the web site www.ezjetinc.com and view the gallery.
You can look at the…jets in construction.”
Robin “Nuts” Lockwood, Nr. Dallas, TX: “I'm in Ft. Bragg right now. Chet (our 24 year old) just
graduated from the Special Forces (Green Berets) yesterday. Like Dad like son. Mom is not too happy. He
wants to make a deployment. Anyway, yes the Long-EZ (69WK) is still sitting in the garage. I had my
shoulder operated-on at the end of November and was off work for 6 months. I thought I would work on it
while I was recuperating, but my shoulder really hurt for 4 months.”
Robin Binder, Mariposa, CA: “I'm starting Ch 23 [On Long EZ], bypassing Ch 22 for a while and still have to some control system details to attend to, such as moving the master
cylinders up-front. Not sure about Columbia, but I hope to spend some of Saturday
afternoon there.”
Don Berlin reports that he has brought his new Long EZ out to the hangar for final
assembly.

“I would like to join. I have about 1150 hours on my Long EZ now. It first flew in June of 1995, flew to OSH, etc for five years in primer, then I took it out of service for engine cooling mods and paint. Started a business (big mistake), plane sat for about 8 years, got it back in the air with paint and overhauled (by me) O-235
engine with high compression pistons in June 2008.
Started racing in September of 2008 and have now entered 30 SARL races. Next race will be the one in OH next weekend (I hope), then the AVC race to OSH on 7-28. If things come together (canard-wise), there will be Klaus in his Determinator, James and Sandy Redmon in Race 13, Rich Lamb in Race 93, Jeff Mallia in his Cozy III, Leif Johnson in his (new to him) Vari (Race 25), Jerry Peck in his Long EZ (his first race), and me in Race 83. Last year we had three Defiants - Manvel, Rodrian, and Sorenson. I hope they will return!!”
Absolutely! Sign me up...............also, would you give me some tech advice? My right main tire is cambered
out 4-5 degrees at the bottom. It looks like someone has tried to use washers on the top axle bolts to correct this
by angling the axle down. I need to correct this .... Any ideas on how best to do it? Beagle’s Advice:Get a
good mentor and use a hair dryer or heat gun carefully and a steel bar and clamps, add some extra
outside plies, possibly longer bolts and adjust wheel pants to it. If the glass is disrupted a bit, then
replacing it with cured carbon might be necessary.

you just take more runway if he’s fat, right?

I bought JZE about 4 years ago, I'm owner #4. She was built by Jim
Glinderman and first flight was 1987 ...and still has the 0-235-L2C.
Top speed has gone from 140 knots to 173 knots and I've learnt a few
things and a few people have my money too...It’s now IFR equipped.. but
I'm not yet ;) Seems I caught a bug or something and started a scratch
build…[On] Ch5 after a few months so a long way to go.
My previous ride was an open frame gyrocopter with a cruise speed of 40
knots and many years in sailplanes before that. I only did the GA thing
when JZE showed up for sale and I had to have her.... canard fever?”

proverbial stage of "90 percent done, with 90 percent to go. I have the
project in my hanger at Oxnard airport. It shares space with our Cardinal,

Oh and Trivia: For those of you who have never seen the last edition Berkut wings – a little different than virtually all the other canard wings out there. Virtually identical in planform to the Long EZ…as all the others except the Varieze. Bigger ailerons, stiffer wings this way.
