Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’ (On Care for Our Common Home)

Chapter One – What Is Happening to Our Common Home

(continued from last week)

The omnipresence of the media and the digital world can stop people

from learning how to live wisely, to think deeply and to love

generously. In this context, the great sages of the past run the risk of

going unheard amid the noise and distractions of an information overload.

Real relationships with others, with all the challenges they entail, now tend to be replaced

by a type of internet communication which enables us to choose or eliminate

relationships at whim, thus giving rise to a new type of contrived emotion which has

more to do with devices and displays than with other people and with nature.

We should be concerned that, alongside the exciting possibilities offered by these media,

a deep and melancholic dissatisfaction with interpersonal relations, or a harmful sense of

isolation, can also arise.

Consider becoming a Lector Our parish is sorely in need of new lectors to add to our team. When you were in school, were you one of those kids who raised your hand to read aloud to the class? Did you feel that you had a talent for doing this? That talent may actually have been a gift from God ... a spiritual calling to use your gift to proclaim God’s Word to His people. Please consider becoming one of our Lectors. The Lector commitment would be for one or two Sundays per month. We would walk you through all the steps and routine, in-cluding how to find our website to sign up for those Week-end Masses when you would be available and would want to cover for the next month. Please call or text Joe Peters (301-351-2481, [email protected]) or Nancy Peters (301-526-6526) if you are interested to volunteer or learn more.

Bible Study on Saturday Mornings "If the Psalm prays, do you too pray, if it laments, so do you too, if it renders thanks, so do you also rejoice with it; if it hopes, so you too; if it speaks in the accents of fear, do you also tremble with it; for all that is written therein is meant to be a mirror for us." St. Augustine, Sermons on Psalm 30

The Psalter, a collection of 150 Israelite religious lyrics, is divided into 5 books. The collections can be classified as hymns of praise, prayers of supplication or lament, of thanksgiving, of confidence or trust, and of wisdom. Many were compositions for the royal family of David and used as processional and entrance liturgies.

Beginning Saturday, February 15, an eight-week session on the Psalms will be offered for exploration and understanding. There also will be an emphasis on praying with these ancient poems. When you hear or sing them at Mass, they will speak more clearly to you as you pray.

If you are interested in joining Bible Study on 8 Saturdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the Lyon Ctr., please contact Alicia Urban, 301-879-4368 or [email protected].

At St. John the Baptist Catholic Community we strive to continue the mission of our Lord through our Social Concerns Ministries. We see Social Concerns as integral to the life of our parish. We strive to reflect the Social Mission of the Church in all that we do. Recognizing that Baptism calls us all to mission, Social Concerns Ministries strive to involve the entire parish: • education on Catholic Social Teaching • reaching out in service • working for a just and peaceful world through

advocacy and solidarity with the poor and vulnerable

Community Fund The Community Fund is one important way the St. John the Baptist Catholic Community hears the call of the poor and answers it. We strive to be sensitive and responsive to the immediate needs of those suffering temporary or continued hardships. The Fund provides financial assistance to help prevent eviction, utility disconnection, hunger. In addition to helping individuals in need, we also support 12 local agencies with monthly monetary grants. Periodically, we remind parishioners to refrain from assisting people who come to them at Mass times requesting money. The Community Fund was established to help those in need and should be utilized whenever possible. The Community Fund is supported by the second collection taken at every Mass on the first weekend each month. Private donations or memorial contributions are also accepted.

Guidelines for the Operation of the Community

Fund Under the guidance of the Office of Social Concerns, the Fund is administered by the Board of Directors which represents a cross-section of the parish. The Board meets monthly and operates as a team making decisions based on consensus. The Board of Directors provides a personal rather than institutional approach to helping those in need.

Emergency Assistance Protocol The Community Fund collection is used for emergency assistance to individuals requesting help and local agencies

providing such assistance. Individuals seeking assistance should contact the Office of Social Concerns. All efforts are made to provide a holistic approach to helping. In addition to providing an explanation of their immediate need, individuals are encouraged to explain what led to the emergency and what, if any, actions can be identified to ensure this does not recur. Specific plans are encouraged but not required. Individuals are required to provide a referral from the DHHS, HOC, or private social services agency to ensure they are utilizing all resources available to them. Individuals are also required to provide proof of identification, proof of need such as an eviction notice, utility disconnect notice, etc. Once the need is verified a check will be issued to the landlord, utility company, etc. No cash is ever distributed from the SJB Office.

Guidelines for types of assistance: Food People seeking food assistance are referred to Manna or St. Camillus Food Pantry (SCFP). Additional assistance may be available on a case by case basis. Rent and Utility Assistance People with an eviction notice or a utility cut-off notice will be referred first to their local county Emergency Assistance Services, then to the local non-profit organizations servicing their zip code area. Assistance is given when applicants have exhausted other funding sources. People who have late notice bills without a cut-off or eviction noted will be considered on a case by case basis. Clothing, Household Supplies, School Supplies, and Christmas Toys People needing clothing, household, and/or school supplies are referred to C-4. A letter of referral from the pastor is required for applicants to register at C-4. Once they have registered, they are eligible to receive assistance from C-4 including school supplies in August and toys at Christmas. Other Assistance Requests for prescription assistance are referred to EMEAN, MUSST, MUM, or Catholic Charities, depending upon the zip code of the applicant.

USCCB Launches National Civility Effort

through 2020 Elections

As Catholics, we have a long tradition of engagement in the political process as a means of putting our faith into action. We are called to bring the best of ourselves and our faith to the public square—and yet today, many shy away from such involvement because our national and local conversations are filled with vitriol and harsh language, often directed at people themselves.

When personal attacks replace honest debate, no one wins. This kind of attack, no matter the reason, only serves to further divide our communities. As Catholics, we must model a better way.

Civilize It is about making room in your heart for those with whom you disagree. We are called to recognize that each one of us is a beloved child of God and to respond in love to that reality.

Civilize It is a non-partisan call to focus on the dignity of all people, even when we disagree, and to put faith in action by bearing witness to a better way forward.

Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace:

A Prayer for Civility Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where uncivil words prevail, show me how to model love. Help me remember the God-given dignity of all and invite others to do the same. Show me how to build bridges and not walls and see first what unites us rather than how we diverge. Let me seek to understand before asking to be understood. Give me a listening heart filled with empathy and compassion. May I be clear in sharing my own position and respectful and civil in describing those of others. Let me never tolerate hateful ideas. May I invite all to charity and love. Lord, help me to imitate your compassion and mercy. Make me an instrument of your peace. Amen. Inspired by Nine Rules for Civility from the Catholic Tradition, Bishop Zubik

We are salt & light

A divided country. Fights at the dinner table. Political vitriol. What does it mean to love our neighbors in the

midst of such a climate?

What does it mean to love our neighbors in the midst of such a divisive climate? Catholics are called to bring the best of ourselves and our faith to the public square—and yet today, many shy away from such involvement because our national and local conversations are filled with anger and harsh language, often directed at people themselves.

As Catholics, we must model a better way. We invite you to model love for neighbor by pledging to Civilize It and committing to civility, clarity, and compassion this election year.

Civilize It: Dignity Beyond the Debate is a non-partisan call to focus on the dignity of all people, even those with whom we disagree, and to put faith in action. Make room in your heart for those with whom you disagree and pledge dignity beyond the debate today at CivilizeIt.org.

We would love to see as many parents and parishioners as possible be able to attend one of the special activities which will take place during Catholic Schools Week. Wednesday afternoon there will be a Living Rosary held in the Church where students will lead the Living Rosary

beginning at 2:15 p.m. On Thursday, Family Day, there will be an Open House in the morning so parents can visit their child’s classroom between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Following the Open House will be a Liturgy in the Church led by the Second Graders which will begin at 10:45 a.m. Parents and Parishioners are welcome to celebrate this Mass with the students. Parents will then be invited to share lunch with their child(ren) following the Mass in the School Gym.

Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week begins Sunday, January 26 and ends Sat., February 1. The National theme for this week is seen in the logo: “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” Students are learning to become future servant leaders, faith-filled disciples, and enriched citizens. Their teachers are also learning and growing with them as serv-ants and leaders. These shared qualities are what make catholic schools succeed.

Mystical Word

written by L.J. Milone, Director of Faith Formation, [email protected]

Everyone in the town became alarmed and shocked when they saw a monk, astride a donkey, charging through the streets. “Where are you going, brother?” they asked. As he whizzed by, the monk shouted back, “I’m looking for my ass!” Like the monk, we don’t realize that what we are desperately searching for is with us, and, in fact, right under our noses! Happiness, clear and unrestricted, is totally available here and now. Real, lasting happiness is found within. For, the kingdom of heaven is within us. Timothy Radcliffe, a contemporary Dominican friar, writes, “Christianity is the good news that God created us for happiness, and ultimately for the happiness that is God being God.” Happiness is within because God is within and we are always already one with God.

As Jesus proclaims, the way into the kingdom of heaven, which is within us, is the way of repentance. To repent means to drop all the things in which we invest so much energy, time, and attention to revel in the divine presence always already within us. According to Thomas Keating, to repent is to change the direction in which one looks for happiness. So, throw it all away! We don’t need anything to be happy. We shouldn’t trust any advertisement, any corporation, anyone trying to sell us something, to make money off some-thing that will supposedly make us happy. No possession, expectation, hope, wish, fantasy, experience, person, or feeling will ever make us ultimately happy.

Imagine a situation in which you know you cannot be happy. Is it waiting in line at the grocery store? Is it time with your in-laws? Is it breaking down on 495? Is it losing a loved one? Is it losing your job? Is it fighting with a loved one? In every one of these situations – and worse ones – you can be essentially happy. You may not feel happy. But that doesn’t mean that you are not essentially happy – that is, joyful. You can be happy anywhere, anytime, with anyone. Why? Because you don’t need anything at all to be happy – happiness is within you because you are one with God here and now.

Anthony De Mello puts it so well: “Everywhere people have actually built their lives on the unquestioned belief that without certain things—money, power, success, approval, a good reputation, love, friendship, spirituality, God—they cannot be happy.

What is your particular combination?...Then came the efforts to acquire your precious thing or person, to cling to it once it was acquired, and to fight off every

possibility of losing it. This finally led you to abject emotional dependence so that the object of your attachment had the power to thrill you when you attained it, to make you anxious lest you be deprived of it and miserable when you lost it…Anxiety, fear, jealousy, anger, paranoia are all related to getting your attachment. When you feel bored, depressed, sad, miserable, it is because life is not giving you what you have convinced yourself you cannot be happy without. Almost every negative emotion you experience is the direct

outcome of an attachment.” You know there’s something you want that you think will make your life better. That means that you have attachments – everyone does – and attachments cause misery. We spend so much time managing our illusions and attachments that we cannot focus on what is real and true.

Why am I not happy? I am not happy because I’m resisting the moment, clinging to some fleeting pleasure, chasing some fleeting pleasure, or reacting to getting or not getting some fleeting pleasure. I am preoccupied with something other than God. No thing will ever make me happy. Nothing will make me happy. In joy we surrender all we have for God. Nothing but God – the divine nothing – is our joy, our delight, and our bliss. Once we find the Absolute Center, nothing else matters. But, we don’t want to have nothing, we want to be good, beautiful, worthy on our own, we want so many things, and, therefore run in terror from the divine nothingness within.

Imagine being happy for no reason at all. Imagine being unaffected by anything negative. It would be like throwing red paint into the sky. The sky would be totally unaffected, completely unphased. To be in the kingdom of heaven is to be unconditionally happy because God is our happiness and God is unconditionally infinite. When our happiness is anchored in the divine, no passing feelings, events, or people can hurt us. We are at peace, resting secure and serenely in the divine nothingness. It is so easy! Let the divine nothing be your bliss by sinking into silence and letting everything else go.
