Sunday, February 25, 2018 Lent: 2nd Sunday Today’s readings: Genesis 9:8-15 1 Peter 3:18-22 Mark 1:12-15 On this second Sunday of Lent, for all three years of the Lectionary, the Old Testament readings and the New Testament readings are similar – the Transfiguration and one of the “calls” of Abraham. While the Transfiguration presents a glimpse of the future glory of Jesus immediately after he predicts his suffering, the focus of each Gospel account is the proclamation, “This is my beloved Son, listen to him.” There’s that word, listen, again. Last month in the Sundays of Ordinary Time, the focus was on listening, especially in the Old Testament account of Samuel’s call. The season of Lent presents a continuing challenge to listen intensely to the voice of Jesus as it resonates throughout the four Gospels. In today’s responsorial psalm we hear, “I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.” Do we really mean that? Are we prepared to move with Abraham as he replied “Here I am” each time God called? Are we ready and willing for God to call us? Do we have enough faith to say “Here I am” and to go where God would lead us, trusting only that it will be in the land of the living? Sunday, February 25, 2018 Lent: 2nd Sunday Today’s readings: Genesis 9:8-15 1 Peter 3:18-22 Mark 1:12-15

On this second Sunday of Lent, for all three years of the

Lectionary, the Old Testament readings and the New

Testament readings are similar – the Transfiguration and one

of the “calls” of Abraham. While the Transfiguration

presents a glimpse of the future glory of Jesus immediately

after he predicts his suffering, the focus of each Gospel

account is the proclamation, “This is my beloved Son, listen to him.” There’s that word, listen, again. Last month in the

Sundays of Ordinary Time, the focus was on listening, especially in the Old Testament

account of Samuel’s call. The season of Lent presents a continuing challenge to listen

intensely to the voice of Jesus as it resonates throughout the four Gospels. In today’s

responsorial psalm we hear, “I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.” Do

we really mean that? Are we prepared to move with Abraham as he replied “Here I

am” each time God called? Are we ready and willing for God to call us? Do we have

enough faith to say “Here I am” and to go where God would lead us, trusting only

that it will be in the land of the living?

Lent - 2018

History of the Lenten Supper Talks – In the early days of the

parish (the 1960s), Mass was celebrated on weekday evenings, first

at 5:30 p.m., then at a later hour to accommodate people coming

home from work. In 1974 Lenten Supper Masses were

introduced on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. Parishioners were invited

to do without supper and come to the liturgy with the money they

would have spent on their meal. After Mass coffee and hot

chocolate were available. In the beginning social justice concerns were addressed in

the homily; later by invited guest speakers, often people of national prominence in

their field.

In 1998 Lenten Supper Talks were initiated and held on Fridays, early enough for

parishioners to attend Stations of the Cross at 7:30 p.m. This custom continues today.

A simple supper of soup and bread, provided by volunteers, is served. Participants are

still encouraged to donate what they would have spent on dinner to an agency serving

the poor. Guests speakers address current areas of concern, and participants are given

tools with which they can become involved. Please see details in each week’s bulletin.

Rights and Responsibilities & Care for God’s Creation

“Carefully watch your thoughts, for they become your words. Manage and watch your words, for they will become

your actions. Consider and judge your actions, for they have become your habits. Acknowledge and watch your habits,

for they shall become your values. Understand and embrace your values, for they become your destiny.”

Mahatma Gandhi

“Today the great gift of God's Creation is exposed to serious dangers and lifestyles which can degrade it. Environmental pollution is making particularly unsustainable the lives of the poor of the world ... we must pledge ourselves to take care of creation and to share its resources in solidarity.” Pope Benedict XVI

2018 LENTEN SUPPER TALKS

Come to the Lyon Center to observe the Lenten fast by sharing a simple supper of soup and bread. During the meal, we listen to a presentation on a topic related to the social concerns of our Church. This year's theme is "Finding Jesus

Everywhere." Our goal this year is to increase our members' commitment to scripture, Catholic Social Teaching, and action. Each evening begins with a free, simple supper of soup and bread at 6:00 p.m. The presentation starts about 6:20 p.m. followed by questions and ending at 7:30 p.m.

March 2: TASSC (Torture Abolition and

Survivors Support Coalition) Truth Speakers TASSC is a coalition of torture survivors and volunteers, representing countries and ethnic groups throughout all parts of the world. "Truth Speakers" are survivors of torture who have chosen to talk publicly about their experiences to educate others and to further the fight for the abolition of torture. They bravely speak out, so their stories can serve to spread awareness and to advocate on the behalf of those who have been silenced.

Poverty Statistics in our Community:

Food insecurity is the state of being without consistent, reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.

In Montgomery County, 7% of the County’s population is estimated to be food insecure (77,780). Children are especially vulnerable to families’ economic status. Nearly 13.9% of the County’s children are estimated to be food insecure, representing 33,000 children. The total number of food insecure children is higher than any other County in the state.

Seniors, children and the disabled are likewise vulnerable, as access to healthy foods and lack of exercise have led to the dire prediction that children born in the 2000’s have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.

Mystical Word

L.J. Milone, Director of Adult Faith Formation

Recall your last conversation. With whom did you speak? Do you remember what she or he said? Did you hear him or her? Did you partially pay attention or fully pay attention? How well did you listen? To listen is an act of ego reduction. It diminishes ego importance. Listening reduces ego to nothing because it involves complete attention to another person. Jesus listens and this tells us God listens. Listening has everything to do with today’s Gospel.

The mysterious event of the Transfiguration confirms the revealed truth of being reduced to nothing, which is dangerous to conventional society and its market values. In the Gospel of Luke, it says Jesus, Moses, and Elijah discussed Jesus’ “exodus” or passion and death. The context of the Transfiguration in Mark, the Gospel from which today’s reading comes, is vitally important. Otherwise, we can forget that the Transfiguration reveals God is behind the reversal of all conventional values. God is driving this path of downward mobility and ego diminishment. We can forget, in the light of the glory of the Transfiguration, that divine glory is revealed most truly and effectively through the cross.

Immediately prior to the Transfiguration, Jesus predicts his passion and death. Then, Peter takes Jesus aside to rebuke him. If he knows he’ll die in Jerusalem, Peter reasons, then it’s best not to go there! Who among us wouldn’t argue in exactly the same way? Jesus’ response is telling. He says Peter is thinking not like God, but like men. Peter is reasoning based on his society’s values and not based on the values of the kingdom. Jesus then calls all his followers to deny themselves, take up their crosses, and lose their lives. This is how we follow him: by being reduced to nothing. This path shows us who we are. For, after these scenes, Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up Mount Tabor and is transfigured. His true identity shines forth, but the context suggests one truly grasps Jesus’ identity and fully realizes one’s own identity by the cross, by being reduced to nothing.

Jesus’ identity as the Son of God, and our own divine identity, is revealed through the reduction to nothingness. A lot of our pain comes from over-identifying with a race, a nation, a religion, an ethnicity, a political viewpoint, a political party, addictions, the body, time, busy-ness, various idiosyncrasies, and, ultimately, the ego. The identities we manufacture keep us pivoted away from reality and locked in very illusory worlds.

Jesus, though, finds his identity in his Abba, the Holy Mystery beyond all things yet intimately one with all things. Jesus, fundamentally, listens to his Abba and in doing so knows who he is.

We don’t really want to listen because it is not the posture of the winner. The ego, and our middle-class conventional culture, wants to win, maybe above all other things. By winning, whether through an argument or an athletic competition, the ego presumes it will be investing itself with eternal glory. The ego wants the glory radiating from Jesus, but on its own terms. The terms of the ego are reflected in bourgeois society’s values: competition, success, achievement, and doing what it takes to win. The Gospel, however, is about losing. Just a few verses before the Transfiguration Jesus commands – not suggests, but commands – his disciples to deny themselves, take their

crosses, and lose their lives. This is the way we follow Jesus into the glory of God. God is not a triumphant military hero but a crucified, humble, and poor God. Listening seems like an experience of losing because the one listening gives way to the other instead of asserting oneself over the other.

We rationalize away the Gospel by listening to our own excuses and explanations. God’s voice cuts through this dross and says, “Listen to Jesus.” The hardest thing to do is to listen authentically. Listening well and as a spiritual practice crystallizes into the virtue of obedience. Jesus obeys God. Is there a more distasteful virtue for our society? Conventional American society says we can do what we want. We can choose as we wish. Truly, the most basic cultural myth that we never question is the absolute priority we give to individual choice. Free choice is a fine value, but we treat it as ultimate. To obey God and what God wants for us, rather than our own wills, is a tremendous step along the path of being reduced to nothing. Our wills submitting to God’s will is a practice faithful to Jesus who submitted his own will to God our merciful Abba: “Not as I will, but as you will.”

Only when we listen to God and obey will we ever discover our true nature as the beloved of God. We listen to God best in silence. We surrender to God most directly when we pray contemplatively. Contemplative prayer is really the central practice and hinge to living the Gospel.

Mystical Word - continued

Through contemplative prayer God becomes the center, ego diminishes, and we receive the grace to put the Gospel into practice. Meister Eckhart preaches, “Be as free of all images as when [you are] nothing.” Contemplative prayer, in a non-thinking silence, is a very radical reduction of the self to nothingness. In the silence, we let our thinking, our plans, our feelings take a back-seat to God. We stop the conversation we have with ourselves all through the day to let God be God in us. We listen to God’s fundamental message to us, “I love you enormously. I delight in you as you are, and we are one.” This is the triumph of obedience.

Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows’ Story

Feast Day February 27 Born in Italy into a large family and baptized Francis, Saint Gabriel lost his mother when he was only four years old. He was educated by the Jesuits and, having been cured twice of serious illnesses, came to believe that God was calling him to the religious life. Young Francis wished to join the Jesuits but was turned down, probably because of his age, not yet 17. Following the death of a sister to cholera, his resolve to enter religious life became even stronger and he was accepted by the Passionists. Upon entering the novitiate he was given the name Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows. Ever popular and cheerful, Gabriel quickly was successful in his effort to be faithful in little

things. His spirit of prayer, love for the poor, consideration of the feelings of others, exact observance of the Passionist Rule as well as his bodily penances—always subject to the will of his wise superiors— made a deep impression on everyone. His superiors had great expectations of Gabriel as he prepared for the priesthood, but after only four years of religious life symptoms of tuberculosis appeared. Ever obedient, he patiently bore the painful effects of the disease and the restrictions it required, seeking no special notice. He died peacefully on February 27, 1862, at age 24, having been an example to both young and old. Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows was canonized in 1920.

Children’s Area during Mass There are times when children have too much energy during Mass and babies have a need to cry. When that happens, we wish to remind everyone of our special area where Mass can be viewed on the TV and children can have a little more freedom to be themselves. This area is in the hallway between the Church and the Gym.

SJB School News

Third Graders are busy beavers here at SJB! In our Religion class, we are learning all about prayer and we will be creating a special "Blessing Book" highlighting all of the special seasons of the Church year. In Language Arts, we are beginning a new

unit entitled "Meet the Challenge" in which we will explore making good choices, using what we know to help others, finding ways to adapt to challenges in our environment, and understanding how we can be an inspiration to others. It has been fun learning Cursive Writing this year, as well as Multiplication in Math. During Catholic Schools Week, we worked with our buddies in 5th and 7th grades to create centerpieces for our family lunch and to play games together. Best of all, we supported our annual Valentine's Day Bake Sale by buying some yummy desserts to help the people of Puerto Rico recover from their recent hurricane. All in all, school is fun here at SJB - especially in Third Grade.

Knights of Columbus Summer Camp Registration for the Knights of Columbus Summer Camp has begun! We are preparing for our eighteenth summer in College Park, MD. We offer swim lessons, arts and crafts, games, sports, and free swim at our extensive facility. The registration form can be downloaded at http://kofccamp.blogspot.com. Please direct any questions to Anne Irwin at 240-393-2468 or [email protected].

A remote live-stream video feed of the main conference will be available at the Mission Church of St. Mary Magdalen of St. Margaret Parish at 1716 Churchville Rd., Bel Air, 21014. Pre-registration is strongly recommended. Tickets are limited for the Mission Church of St. Mary Magdalen. Tickets are $40 for general admission and $20 for students.
